The Say Less Podcast
A podcast for creative women building businesses in real life. Hosted by Grace and Alex, wedding photographers and creative entrepreneurs, this show lives at the intersection of sustainability and strategy. Some weeks we are talking editing workflows, client contracts, pricing as a beginner, associate shooting, timelines, systems, and how to actually run a creative business. Other weeks we are unpacking burnout, ambition, motherhood, identity shifts, and what happens when the business you prayed for starts asking more of you than you expected. We love the technical side. We love the heart side. We believe you need both. If you are building something meaningful and want it to last, this is your space.

004: Chartreuse, Burgundy, and the Internet Losing Its Mind!
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this lively episode, Alex and Grace dive into the buzzing TikTok trend of pairing chartreuse and burgundy for weddings and why it’s sparking so much debate. From nostalgic references to fashion icons, they unpack how trends evolve, age, and sometimes, cause a bit of chaos.
In this episode:
- The cultural pull of trends in the wedding industry and why everything is inherently trendy
- The origins and vivid description of the chartreuse and burgundy combo
- How social media amplifies trends and the “doom scrolling” effect
- Why color choices like these are perceived as “bad,” “hot,” or “timeless”
- The influence of past trends like pompous grass, mason jars, and how they come and go
- The importance of personal style and how weddings are ultimately individual expressions
- The impact of Pinterest and TikTok on shaping wedding trends
- The idea that “timeless” is more about memories than colors or styles
Remember, wedding trends are just that... TRENDS. Whether you’re drawn to bold colors or classic palettes, the most timeless element is the memories you create. Don’t let social media conditions limit your creativity or your style. Do what makes you feel confident and excited for your special day. Because at the end of the day, that’s what truly makes a wedding timeless.

I wanted to start a podcast for creative entrepreneurs, so I asked Alex to join me, and I said, say less, I'm in. Welcome to the Say Less podcast, where we actually say a lot more about motherhood, creativity, photography, business ownership, and everything in between. We are your hosts, Alex and Grace, and this is a space for creative women building something meaningful. Whether you're raising babies, raising your rates, or just trying to figure out your next move. We talk about all the real stuff. What's working, what's not, what we're unlearning, what nobody tells you about building a business that has to fit inside a real life. The pivots, the pressure, the sustainability, and all of the seasons. If you've ever felt like you're creating in the margins of your time, your energy, or your confidence, you're not alone here. So stay lost. Let's get into it. Okay, did you watch the Hannah Montana Anniversary Special? I did. This is like the only pink article of clothing I own. So you're wearing it for birthday? Yay! Seriously, I just feel like Hannah Montana has Jack Jack. I just feel like Hannah Montana has stood the test of time. Like I know we talk about trends and we talk about all the things, but like Hannah Montana and honestly, Justin Bieber have like never gotten uncool to me. And maybe it's just because I grew up with them, but I was so excited. I was crying during the documentary. I just was feeling, I know I was telling Travis about this, but I was just feeling like nostalgia and like like emotion when she sang like a newer version of This is the live. I was like, this song never gets old. I feel like that song, well, most of her songs, but like the climb is like this generation's landslide. I saw someone put that on threads and I was like, that's so true. Like it has just stood the test of time. Yeah. Like it's so good. I know. And we always on this podcast talk about trends and whatever. And that like literally leads me into what I want to talk about today. I know, Grace, you have to tell me because you know I'd be obsessed with TikTok. You know I'd be watching. You know, I'd be watching. I get to the point where I literally have to delete the app. Like it gets so bad. Like I'm addicted and I like to watch it. When Travis started his master's degree, we both deleted the app because we were like, it's such a time killer, like a productivity killer. And like it's just kind of like bad news, fake news, and just like like a brain suck. Like it literally just is that dopamine hit, but it's like nonstop. So I always have to delete it, but I'm back on right now. And there's a trend that's popping off going crazy. And I wanted to talk about it on the podcast today because it is relevant to like the wedding industry and the trends and what we talk about. But have you heard about the chartreuse and burgundy drama? So I had only heard about it once when you asked me about it. And I didn't even process it as a thing. So I didn't go down the rabbit hole, but there's a huge rabbit hole. And everybody's experiencing, yeah. Everyone's like having emotions towards it, which is driving me crazy. I'm like, it's like dividing the internet, like this is like the presidential election or something insane. And I'm like, it's literally just color choices. When I see it, which I want to like kind of just for those of you that don't know the trend, like my mom listening to this and the other people, I want to like talk about what it is and like get into that. But uh I just keep thinking, like, have you seen the movie Nanny McPhee? Oh my gosh, yes. But it's been a lot of people. The person you need is Nanny McPhee. Yeah, and she has like the mole, but then she's like actually beautiful. She's beautiful, yeah. She's beautiful. Like it's a whole thing. But it's like when he, when the dad, who's also beautiful on the record, literally beautiful. When the dad gets remarried and he has like the wife who has like the sheep, they're like chartreuse and pink. And maybe this like no one's remembering. Like, I'm just it's the first thing that popped into my mind. And wow, as a Bridgerton super fan, it kind of also reminds me of like Lady Featherington. So those, yeah, those are like the references that I was thinking. So we'll find pictures and put them on the we will put them on. Yeah. I just, yeah. Nanny McPhee, the stepmom. I can't remember if they get married or not, but I'm gonna say stepmom. Her like sheep, and then also Lady Featherington. So keep those in mind as I'm like talking about what it is. But okay, so here's the trend. This is what's going on. It's a color combo that people are using for their weddings, chartreuse and burgundy. If you've never heard the word chartreuse, if you're I like I don't think I've ever said it out loud and I'm about to say it like 47 times a million times. No, like I'm about to say it so many times. It's being described as a color that refuses to be ignored. It's like between between like lime and mustard. Like it's really like such a weird color. Super vibrant green. It's like a risky color, which I feel like people correct me if you think I'm wrong, but I feel like people are getting into color, especially like spring and summer, like in Texas. Like colorful weddings are a thing, which is cool. And I want to go on the record too to say I don't have a problem with this trend. I actually like super enjoy, like I'm enjoying the vibrance of the colors. I think they're like, I think it's really fun, whatever. But yeah, so bright and electric and risky. And then like the burgundy is like deep and romantic, which burgundy is like super a trend right now, too. As I know you know, even like in business, people are using a lot of burgundy and like wine color. But the issue, the people, the issue that people are having with it is the combination. Okay. So I'm like, people are losing their mind. I was like reading some comments on TikTok, of course, of like what people are saying about it. And someone commented, it's like a moody vineyard meets radioactive garden party. And like I was like, I just read all these comments and I was like losing my mind over it. People were comparing it to like the Grand Budapest Hotel, which is like one of my favorite movies. Okay. Which is like one of my favorite movies. And like Marie Antoinette and like Moulon Rouge and the Hunger Games, you know, like the Capital Fashion. Like people are saying so many things about it, but honestly, in my opinion, like all I can think about is Shrek. Like it's literally the color of Shrek. You know what it makes me think of, actually, is pickles and a hot dog. And a hot dog. That's what I think of. Hot dog like with relish or just like a hot dog. Yeah, that probably do I like to do. That's just what comes to mind. No, mine was like literally Shrek. Shrek. Shrek spot on, which is not great, I think. Which is true for a wedding. Yeah. A funny little side note. We were on a family vacation once, and we were like, if you were a Disney princess, who would you be? But we were like asking, you know, I have a bunch of sisters, so we were like asking our husbands slash partners to like describe, like, I was asking Travis. I was like, if I was a Disney princess, who would you think that I would be if you did not? Travis Fiona. Yes, he did. Yes, he did. Which like my gosh, which like was funny, but also that's DreamWorks. So like it's not Disney, like that's not a Disney princess, but it was really funny. I was like, that actually got me. Like I am totally Fiona. But anyways, so back to Short Joseph and Burgundy. The problem is, is that people are saying it's like too trendy. Like it's so trendy, it's gonna like age bad. But like my conversation is that everything's trendy and everything's like going to age eventually. Like, I can't think of anything wedding related that like isn't trendy. I don't know if you can. I'm like, it's just it's like remember when like pompous grass was like such a trend, which I still see. Oh my gosh, yeah. That was like about the time that I was getting started in weddings and I was all about it. Okay. So I I mean, but I don't that's not my first thought anymore because it's not trendy. No, it's like not, but it's like people like drag it now. And I mean it's like getting dragged on social media, like, like remember when everyone did pompous grass and it's like it just was a trend of the time. Like you just can't avoid a trend with a wedding. So I'm like, I just don't know. And then like mason jars. Like on when I was like a little bit before when I was getting married. I guess when I kind of started like mason jars with baby breath, people were like, let me buy some bulk jars. Like, this is the time out in the middle of nowhere jungle forest, tall trees. Yeah. Yeah. It's just the issue is that weddings like are inherently trend based. It's like the color palette you choose, the dress style. I mean, it's like my mom's wedding, her first wedding. Like, she literally had the puffy sleeves and like the blue eyeshadow. And like that was like the trend of the time, but it didn't feel like a trend. That's just like kind of what everyone was doing. Yeah. So I guess it's kind of irritating me that people are like so mad about it because it's like, why do you care what people are doing with their wedding? Honestly, like let them like choose the color that they want. But like even like what is timeless, what feels timeless at the time is like being it's just gonna be going to become a trend because why isn't it? Like everything is a trend. It's like you cannot choose anything that isn't like somewhat trendy. But I do feel like dresses are getting like more timeless. Like people are choosing more like traditional, you know, gowns, whatever. But then it's like remember when everyone was wearing the dress that was like from like beholden, like you know, anthropology is beholden that was like it was like sheer on the top. I'll show a picture of it and no hate towards it. I thought it was beautiful. I shot like 10 weddings that everyone wore like the same dress and I thought it was beautiful. But I'm like, that was a trend. It felt timeless and it was a trend, and like now it's over. I think they were like, sorry, no, go ahead. I feel like we're we're uh we've had enough history documentation of like weddings and dresses in different times and eras and decades that we all like kind of look back on and we love or hate or whatever, and everybody's preferences are different. But I think anything that's created now is like nods to what we've seen in the past. And so even like the trends now, they're just like kind of recycled. And we're just gonna keep seeing those kinds of things come back. I don't know. It just all comes back around. You're exactly right. And I know I've talked to you about this off the pod, but on the pod, I'm obsessed with JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bassett's love story, which I haven't I haven't watched that yet, but I know I need to. You like have to watch it. It's like it's currently on, so like the season hasn't finished yet. Like, we still have like a whole one more episode this week, and then like the season's over. Yeah. But her wedding is like genuinely like one of the most like iconic weddings of all time. Yeah. But like I had never seen the pictures until like I watched the show, and then I kind of like dove into like her wedding pictures, and now it's like trending again. You'll have to watch it, but it's like small church, candlelit, private situation. There was no power. Her like dress was, I mean, just like all of it's coming back. So it is. It's like everything we see is like a nod. I love what you said, to like what we have seen. Yeah. So that's that's the problem. But it's like everything's a trend. Some of them just have like better like PR. TikTok is like dragging the chartreuse in Burgundy. People are saying that chartreuse is like Gen Z's version of sage green because like sage green was a bit. Yeah, kind of still is like me literally with behind you. Yeah, I know. Me, for those of you that are listening and not watching, in my office, the wall is like sage green. And I was saying I was like, this is my room. Like it's the guest room office. I painted it that color because I love sage green. Yeah. So that was the color of all all the towels that we wanted when we first got married. Like we registered for like sage green and gray towels, and we still we still have some of them for real. We're yeah, we're clinging to it. I feel like Pinterest is like the villain in the story. The story of Chartreuse in Burgundy, like Pinterest is the villain. And that's truly our problem because people are like seeing so well, and really TikTok, I won't even say just Pinterest, because I'm like, people are seeing it so much. And the videos that like I'm kind of referencing with the trend of what I'm talking about is like people are saying, like, if you're a 2026 bride and you chose chartreuse in Burgundy, like rethink it. And it's like, why? Like you, you none of you know each other. Like, do the colors if you like the colors. I I really like it. The wedding, I know I sent you a picture. The wedding I shot like two weeks ago, kind of used chartreuse. It was like more muted. It wasn't sage, it was certainly kind of just like a light green color. Yeah. And she did pink too. And I just thought it was so beautiful. Like I genuinely was like, I know I sent you the picture because you were Grace is undecided. I I'm yeah, I can't. I can't, I'm like, I have the chartreuse color literally pulled up on Google and I just it's staring me in the face and I'm like, pickles. It's so bold and vibrant. Yeah. But it's actually beautiful when it's photographed. Like you sent me that picture from that wedding, like on the back of your camera. And I thought, okay, maybe maybe it's okay. That's what I'm saying. Like, who am I to judge? Who am I to judge? It's like the vibrant green with the combination of yes, the vibrant green with the combination of like the burgundy. It's like like she did light green color shades and then like burgundy flowers. Yeah. And like it was just, it was gorgeous. And she had these like table numbers that were chartreuse, but then the flowers were like mainly pink with just greenery. It all tied in beautiful. And I am one of those people, I like rainbow colors, I like bright colors, like every room in my house is painted a different color. I have vibrant wallpapers, my kitchen's blue. Like, I just like bright colors. So I know I'm totally biased, but yeah. Um, some another comment that I saw, I kind of was like scrolling comments and making some notes of stuff. Someone said it's like Shrek getting married in a wine cellar. Which I just was like, that's so funny. This is where like my TikTok doom scrolling comes from because I'm like, I get started, I watch the video, I love it. Then I get started on the comments and I'm like the comments, and I'm like, now we have like a whole new aspect of like doom scrolling because now I'm like scrolling the comments that are so funny. It's so good. It's just like escapism from real life. But, anyways, weddings are they're personal and emotional, but they're all trendy. This is us like giving you permission to do what you want and don't get sucked into these trends. Like the I keep seeing negative connotations in this regard. And I know we're joking about it and whatever. The internet is losing its mind over this color combination, but I feel like if TikTok hates it, you might be onto something. Yeah, you should go for it. You should do what you want because everything's trendy and nothing's timeless. I was about to say, timeless is a plastered all over everybody's website and getting that word. I hate it because everybody's using it. I know. And so I think like nothing is truly timeless. And, you know, we have talked about this on and off the pod, but what makes a wedding truly timeless is like the the memories and the moments, and those are gonna be what make your your whole wedding day like truly timeless. Like the colors just like a photographer can't make it timeless. Your yes, your colors can't make it timeless. It's gonna be trendy no matter what. So just yeah, like you said, just go for it. Do what you want. If you love it, it's timeless to you. I need to I need to search synonyms for timeless because I'm like, we do. What else did I say? But you're hating it. So we gotta like figure it out. Like I always say, like, it stands the test of time. Uh-oh. Sorry. Baby crying on the pod. I always say it's instead of like timeless, like it stands the test of time.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Because I'm like, yeah, time is become one of those like key words. So it is we have to get rid of it. Anyways, that's kind of all I wanted to say about it. That's like a current industry trend. People are freaking out about it. I'm seeing negative and positive. Just a quick little segment to see what other people are thinking about it. We'd love to hear from you guys. And if you're doing it, yeah. We want to know. If you're doing it, yeah, we want to know. We want to hear. We're like curious. And if you are, we love you. Do what you want. You have that Shrek in your wine cellar. We support you. We're supporting Shrek. Okay, guys. I hope you guys enjoyed this one. Just a fun little, yeah. Just a fun little tidbit for you guys. Until the next one. All right. Yes. Bye. Bye.
