Busting The “Fat Makes You Fat” Myth
SPEAKER_00Now I get this question all the time. Dr. Anna, how can the Mediterranean diet help with weight loss if it's so high in fat? Olive oil, nuts, different cheeses, avocado, fatty fish, doesn't that just make you gain weight? Now, this is a very fair question. And honestly, on the surface, it sounds logical. But here's the truth. The idea that fat makes you fat is one of the biggest nutrition methods we've ever been taught. And in this video, I'm going to explain why Mediterranean eating works so well for weight loss, why healthy fats do not sabotage your progress, and what actually matters far more than the total grams of fat on your plate. If we haven't met yet, I'm Dr. Anna, your med diet doc. So let's
Why Mediterranean Fats Support Weight Loss
SPEAKER_00clear up this confusion once and for all. Most people were raised with this very simple equation in their minds: fat in food equals fat on the body. And now decades ago, we were told to just eat low fat to lose weight. So when people hear that the Mediterranean diet includes lots of olive oil and nuts and seeds and fatty fish and different cheeses and avocado, well, they think, how could that possibly be a weight loss diet? But here's the missing piece. Weight loss is not about just removing fat. It's actually about how food affects your whole body, including your hunger, your fullness, your blood sugar, your cravings, and the overall calorie balance over time. Now, healthy fats, I'd argue, actually help with all of those

SPEAKER_00things. So, real quick, if you want a step-by-step plan for how to actually lose weight using Mediterranean meals and eating, without counting calories or cutting out entire food groups, I teach this all in my free Mediterranean weight loss webinar. There's a link below in the description if you want to register. Or if you're watching this on a TV, open up your phone camera app and you can scan the QR code you see on screen. Okay, back to the fat conversation. Let me show you why fat is not
Four Ways Healthy Fats Help
SPEAKER_00the enemy. Here's the part most people don't realize. Healthy fats do four key things that actually make weight loss easier. So we're gonna go through them one by one. Number one, fats keep you full longer. Fat actually slows down our digestion. That means instead of getting hungry again 30 minutes after your meal, you will stay satisfied for hours. Being satisfied after your meal is very essential because it will allow you to snack less, to overeat less, and to think about your food less. That alone will make your weight loss easier. Plus, fats are the things that taste so good. So the idea is that your meals are even going to be more satisfying when you eat them. So you don't just crave eating something else too quickly. Okay, the second reason that fats are so important for weight loss is that they stabilize our blood sugar. Now, a meal that includes lots of healthy fat, as well as other things like protein and fiber, is going to create a slow and steady release of energy. Now, what are we talking about with energy? Well, people understand that carbohydrates or sugar is the perfect source of energy for our body. And that is true. There are other forms of energy for our body, which is fat. Protein actually doesn't provide our body with energy. It does a lot of other essential things. And we're not going to get into that in this video. But what you need to understand is that when you eat a lot of fat, especially when combined with healthy sources of carbs, that means your body can release the energy and the sugars and the mini molecules into your bloodstream at a more slow and steady rate, which is way, way good for you. That is what we want. We do not want our blood sugar spiking up so fast and then crashing back down. So compare this to a low-fat meal, just having cereal with skim
Blood Sugar Spikes Versus Steady Energy
SPEAKER_00milk or just fat-free yogurt with a bunch of sugar added in, or some plain toast with jelly, or some fruit juice. Well, all of these things, because they're devoid of fat and protein and fiber, well, they're gonna spike the blood sugar and they're gonna make you hungry really quickly after you eat them. They might even make you hungrier than before you ate them. So ironically, sometimes this low fat eating can really induce more cravings and more overeating and more weight gain. Now let's talk about the third thing. So fats actually make food satisfying. I kind of alluded to this before. Let's be honest. Have you ever tried a low-fat diet? Did everything taste like cardboard? Was your food as enjoyable? Well, I can guess the answers to those questions, and I also can guess what actually happened next for you. You probably quit. Or you had to eat all the time in order to keep your appetite at bay or your hunger at bay. So Mediterranean eating actually keeps pleasure in
Pleasure, Satiety, And Long-Term Success
SPEAKER_00the picture by including all these fats. Why? Because fats carry all the flavor. And when you enjoy your meals more and it tastes better, you're not gonna feel so deprived, which means you can actually stick with it long term. Now, the key to weight loss is that you can do healthy things for the long term. It is not enough to do a crash diet and then quit because what you're gonna do is maybe you lost weight, but you're going to quickly regain all that weight back and potentially even more so. So, in summary, including fat into your meals, which makes them more enjoyable, helps you stick with it long term, which is essential if you want to lose weight over time and keep it off.
Not All Fats Act The Same
SPEAKER_00Okay, the fourth thing going on with fats here is that not all fats actually act the same in the body. So this is huge. Listen up. The Mediterranean diet is not high in just any types of fats. It's actually rich in olive oil, nuts, seeds, fatty fish, natural fats from whole foods like grains and seeds. These fats are actually linked to better heart health, less inflammation, improved blood sugar control, healthier body composition. We don't need to get into all the chemistry in this video, but what you need to understand is there are different types of fat molecules. You'll hear terms like saturated and unsaturated fats. The foods I just listed before are sources of very healthy, unsaturated fats, and they are key for your body's chemistry to work well. This is very, very different from ultra-processed foods, which have fats that are not healthy for our body and things like chips, fried foods, packaged snacks, ice cream, cake, et cetera. Now, if this is all starting to make a lot of sense and you want to learn how to put these meals together in a nice way that's easy and applicable, do not forget to register for my free Mediterranean weight loss webinar. Again, the link is below this video in the description where you can scan that QR code on the screen.
The Real Causes Of Weight Gain
SPEAKER_00Now, let's talk about the real reason people struggle with fat and weight loss. Because in order to address this, we need to address what actually does cause weight gain. So most people don't gain weight because they're just eating too much olive oil. That almost never happens. They gain weight because of mindless snacking, ultra-processed foods, lots of sugar added into our food supply, like sugary drinks, meals that are not keeping them full, and a lot of emotional eating cycles, things like starving themselves, binging later, undereating, and then overeating later, etc. Now, none of that is caused by healthy fats. In fact, Mediterranean meals usually help fix a lot of these problems. So here is how Mediterranean eating really can work for weight loss. Again, it's not just eat more fat. That's not what I'm saying. If you're hearing me carefully, it's include healthy fats in balanced meals.
Building Balanced Mediterranean Meals
SPEAKER_00Meals that have healthy fat and protein and a source of fiber from real whole-form plant foods and natural flavors. This combination keeps our hunger steady, reduces our cravings, supports that thing called our metabolism, and makes weight loss feel really easy and natural and kind of automatic instead of something you have to force. So to answer our original question here, is the Mediterranean diet too high in fat for weight loss? I hope at this point you can see that it's a big fat no. Pun intended. It is high in the right types of fats inside the right types of meal structures with the right types of whole-form healthful foods. And that is exactly why this works for the long term.
Midlife Metabolism And Smart Fat Use
SPEAKER_00Now, especially after midlife, around our 50s, our hunger hormones can start to change. Things like our blood sugar can get more sensitive, muscle becomes more important, and balanced Mediterranean meals with healthy fats are actually one of the smartest approaches you can take for a long-term study health and weight loss. Now, I'm curious, when you hear the term Mediterranean diet, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? And is that worrying you? Is it fish, olive oil, olives, cheese, maybe some nuts? Drop it in the comments below and let me know because I hope that this video helped clear up any confusion you might have had. And if so, please send it to three people who you
