The “Healthy” Eating Problem
SPEAKER_00What I'm about to show you is something the food industry doesn't want you to know. A few months ago, one of my clients, let's call her Susan, came to me completely frustrated. She said, Dr. Anna, I'm eating healthy, I'm doing everything right, but I keep gaining weight and I don't understand what's happening. So I asked her to send me her grocery list. And when I looked at it, I immediately saw the problem. Her list was full of foods that are labeled healthy. They're foods that you see all these things on the package, foods marketed as good for us, foods most people think are perfect for weight loss. But here's the truth those exact foods were the reason Susan couldn't lose weight. And today I'm gonna show you her actual grocery list. We'll talk about what was wrong with it and exactly what we swapped these things for. Because if you're eating healthy but you're still gaining weight, this might be why. Now, if we haven't met yet, I'm Dr. Anna, your med diet doc. I'm a medical doctor and I've helped thousands of adults lose weight and keep it off using simple, sustainable approaches. And I do this both in my clinical work and here online. Now, what I'm about to show you is something I see all the time, and it's a classic
Susan’s Grocery List Revealed
SPEAKER_00problem. Here's what Susan was buying every single week. She thought she was doing everything right, but these were the foods. Breakfast, she was buying these low-fat yogurts that were vanilla or strawberry or different fruit on the bottom. She was buying granola, whole wheat bagels, orange juice. Lunch and snacks, she was buying lots of whole wheat crackers, reduced fat peanut butter, pre-made salad kits with those dressings, lots of protein bars. Dinner, she was buying plant-based burger patties, vegan chicken nuggets, frozen healthy meals, whole wheat pizza and pasta, jarred marinara sauce. Now, if you're watching this and you're thinking, wait, that sounds like my grocery list. Well, don't worry, you're clearly not alone. This is what most people buy when they're trying to eat healthy, especially all these plant-based products, because we've been told that plant-based is healthier, that it's better for us than meat, that it's clean eating. But what Susan didn't know was this. Almost every single one of these items on her list were kind of working against her. It's not because she was trying to do something wrong, and it's not because she didn't care. But the food industry has gotten really good at making super unhealthy foods look healthy for us. Let's talk about what I mean.
How Health Labels Mislead You
SPEAKER_00Let's start with item by item. Low-fat vanilla yogurt? So, the challenge is, yes, we know that there is some correlation between having lots of saturated fat in our diet and having a higher risk for heart disease, right? That's the whole reason they would remove the fat from that yogurt. But when you buy sweetened yogurt like vanilla, it is loaded up with added sugar. And that is to make up for the lost flavor when they removed the fat. How about that granola? Super healthy, right? It's got lots of oats, and we know oats are healthy for our heart because they have fiber. But the problem with a lot of store-bought granolas, you gotta read carefully, it ends up being like eating a cookie. It is so high in added sugar, processed oils, and empty calories. How about orange juice? So this one is kind of confusing for folks because they've heard that fruit is healthy. Well, fruit is healthy, but in the juice form, it really ends up being like liquid sugar for our body because we took out all the fiber that was in the actual orange. And the fiber was what helped slow down our body processing that sugar in the fruit. So even if it says no sugar added, it still spikes blood sugar because juice is juice. Now, how about the whole wheat crackers and the whole wheat bagels? Again, we've been taught that we need to eat whole wheat. Why is that? Because whole grains have lots of healthy fiber. But the problem is, even if we're using whole wheat flour in these products, they're still considered ultra-processed because of everything else they're adding back in. And depending on the type you're buying, so it depends on the brand, you may still be eating something with tons of added sugar, salt, added oils, thickeners, agents, preservatives. Now, how about those protein bars? Well, protein is an essential nutrient for our body, absolutely, but they're not all created equal. Unfortunately, many brands are building these things basically like glorified candy bars with some protein powder added into it. Now, here's the big one: the plant-based processed products. So, Susan was buying plant-based burger patties and vegan chicken nuggets because she was taught that this is healthier than meat. When we flipped the package over and I had her look at the ingredient list, this is what we saw. One of the main ingredients in there was salt and then sugar, and then lots of added oils,
The Plant Based Processing Trap
SPEAKER_00fillers, thickeners, preservatives, chemicals, all to make it taste like meat. But ultimately, the product was ultra-processed because it was designed in a lab, it was engineered for the flavor and tastiness, and for it to last a long time on the shelf. Not necessarily designed for your health. And this is really hard for people to understand. Just because something is plant-based doesn't necessarily mean it's automatically healthy. Here's what I want you to understand. Whole foods are always better than these ultra-processed foods, even if the intention is for the product to be good. So whether this is taking really lean ground beef from a healthy animal, eating real chicken, real fish, or real beans, real lentils, real chickpeas, the real plant-based protein sources, all of those are better for us because they're all whole foods. And all of these provide us with real nutrition. But a vegan patty made in a factory with 30 ingredients that you can't really pronounce, that is not a health food. That is marketing. The Mediterranean diet is anchored in eating whole foods and simple eating, and there is a reason that this is the number one diet linked to basically the most health benefits of any other dietary approach out there. We don't really want to worry about all these trendy products. We don't really want to buy into that gimmick of fake meat and lab-created substitutes because ultimately we just need to be eating a lot of real food. So whether you prefer to avoid meat and meat products or you are comfortable eating them, that is up to you. And you can talk to your doctor, but it's always going to be better to eat the whole food for.

SPEAKER_00So, real quick, if you're watching this and you're thinking, okay, so I'm starting to understand, Dr. Anna, what you're talking about, but I would not know how to put this all together in an actual diet that serves me and my health, and I still want to lose weight. Do not worry. I put it all together for you in my free Mediterranean weight loss webinar where you learn my approach step by step. Simple Whole Food Swaps
SPEAKER_00phone. So now let's talk about exactly what we did swap Susan's list to. We talked about the issues, but here's what I actually had her buy instead. I didn't throw everything out. We didn't make it super complicated. We just made some simple swaps to whole foods. So instead of her low-fat vanilla yogurt that she liked, I had her start to buy plain Greek yogurt. I let her decide about the fat content because Greek yogurt variety is higher in protein and automatically has a creamier texture, even if you're buying the reduced fat or even the fat-free kind. So I wanted her to choose the one she liked. She ended up adding her own sweetener because she liked the sweet flavor, but she could control the amount of added sugar she put in. Plus, I had her add whole form fruit to her breakfast. A lot of the times this was sliced up strawberries or raspberries, but it sometimes was also banana, sometimes it was mango or pineapple. Ultimately, all of this in combination, plus adding in some nuts, she was not adding a lot of sugar. She was adding lots of foods that helped fill her up, and it all provided really good nutrition. So, how about the granola part? Well, instead of her buying the store-bought granola, I had her opt for some very crunchy seeds or nuts and a small amount of homemade granola that she could quickly put together. Oats, honey, almonds, and a little bit of oil. Toasted in the oven, super simple, real ingredients and real energy. Instead of the orange juice? Yeah, I had her buy actual oranges. Big shocker there. Plus, I told her, if you like the drink flavor of orange, squeeze some orange into some sparkling water, for example. And it's going to completely change what it does to your blood sugar. The fiber slows down the blood sugar response. It helped Susan stay full after her meal without getting a headache. So, what about those whole wheat bagels? Well, what I had Susan do was buy fresh bread from a local bakery that had some seeds inside of it. So we made sure there was still some good fiber, but she also loved the taste of sourdough bread. And I told Susan, enjoy, sourdough is fantastic. There's a lot of healthy bacteria in there. And overall, these breads that were made fresh from a bakery had way fewer ingredients and they didn't have all those preservatives and additives in there. More nutrition, better blood sugar response. Instead of crackers and protein bars for snacks, I had her get cut-up veggies with some dips, hummus and satsiki, a handful of almonds, and a piece of real fruit. Again, really basic, but real food and real satisfaction. Now, instead of those plant-based burgers and the fake chicken nuggets, we had Susan buy real protein sources. She actually didn't mind eating meat, so I had her just buy real turkey and chicken. Plus, she started incorporating real beans and lentils into her food. And again, it was really simple because a lot of the time she could just buy the canned beans, rinse them off, and they were ready to go. Add it on with some olive oil and fresh herbs, and the meals were starting to really pop. So, all of these things, as you can see, were whole food substitutions. They provided real nutrition, lots of healthy protein, lots of fiber, lots of delicious flavor, and ultimately all supportive of weight loss. Plus, we got to avoid all the things we didn't want, those fake ingredients, the chemicals, and especially the confusion. Now, how about those frozen meals? Well, this was tricky because Susan says sometimes she just didn't have the energy to cook. I totally get that. I'm human as well. We had her opt for simple dinners that she could make in 15 minutes or less. Getting a piece of fish or chicken that she could pan sear, steaming some vegetables, drizzling on top olive oil, some vinegar like balsamic, herbs, spices, some garlic or onion powder, and she was done. Now, with the jarred marinara sauce, this was a tricky one because she thought, I don't understand. It's all like fat-free inside, is mostly just tomatoes. Right. The problem is there was tons of added sugar. And when she could just opt for a can of crushed tomatoes plus garlic and olive oil herself and add a little bit of pinch of salt, there was actually way more flavor. And we didn't have to deal with all that blood sugar spike. So here's what happened
Results: Less Hunger And Food Noise
SPEAKER_00next. Within two weeks, Susan told me, I'm really not hungry the way I used to be. Like I have some cravings, but they're so much less. And I feel energetic throughout my day. And I'm drinking less caffeine. And it's amazing because I'm not really thinking about food as much as I used to. Now, the last part is huge. She wasn't thinking about food as much as she used to. The reality is when we're eating processed foods all day long, even if they're labeled healthy, even if we think they fit into our diet and they're clean, the problem is our brain is constantly thinking about food because those foods were designed to specifically be super tasty. So it affects our brain's response to the foods themselves. So we're always thinking, what's my next meal? What am I gonna have for a snack? Am I hungry? Am I just craving something? And then we end up getting stressed out about this and often making poor choices. When Susan was able to switch to these more whole food approaches and she could create these balanced meals for herself, that food noise stopped. Plus, Susan lost 11 pounds in the first month and a half. Not because she was eating less and tracking everything, but her body finally had what it needed, and her meals were keeping her full. Her blood sugar was, of course, steadier, and her cravings started to get better. That is the process of food not running your life. So let's break this down. I
The Perfect Meal Formula
SPEAKER_00want you to understand this framework so you can understand how to apply this to your own life. Why does this work? Once we can clean up the food quality and we can structure the meals correctly, it is so simple to replicate this over and over to support our what is called metabolism. So I like to teach this framework I call the perfect meal formula for applying this really simply. That is a perfect meal, according to the formula, is one that includes protein, healthy fats, fiber from real whole foods, and natural flavorings, things like herbs, spices, foods and ingredients to provide our body with all these anti-inflammatory properties, which are amazing. When meals are built this way, weight loss literally gets easier. Not because you're starving yourself, but because you're actually fueling your body with what it actually needs to function optimally, and so you feel satisfied. And overall, all the metabolism stuff starts getting better regulated. You do not need to understand the nitty-gritty of the science for you to make this work for yourself. But the cool thing is this is the real foundation and the bedrock behind the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle. It's part of why it is so research-backed and supportive for tons of different types of diseases. It includes lots of simple whole foods, very balanced meals, and real ingredients. You don't have to chase trendy products, fake substitutes, processed junk that's actually disguised as a health food. And you don't have to feel so confused about what to buy. It's very simple and straightforward. And this is exactly all the stuff I teach in my step-by-step free Mediterranean weight loss webinar. Inside, I walk through how to shop for these Whole Foods, how to build these meals that support weight loss, how to make this fit into your real life, whether you're going on vacation, you want to go to a restaurant, you're going to somebody's event, like a wedding, and how weight loss will start to feel automatic for you in your life. And it's not something you have to chase. Again, the link below this video is there for you to register, or you can click the QR code right here on screen if you're watching from a TV.
Why It Matters More After 50
SPEAKER_00So I want to now shift gears and talk about why this is so important, especially when we get older, like after age 50. After 50, the body does not seem to respond the same way it used to. You may have noticed that you kind of feel like you're slowing down. Well, that's partly because our hunger signals start to shift, our energy doesn't bounce back as fast as it used to, our blood sugar can become more sensitive, and overall, it's harder to maintain our muscle mass. We actually have to work even harder. Now, the last part is really important for metabolism overall, because muscle is the organ of our body in charge of regulating all of that, which is basically our fat burning machine. The issue is that processed foods, even the ones labeled healthy, will hit us even harder. This is why so many people constantly are telling me, Dr. Anna, I used to be able to eat whatever I wanted. Now everything makes me gain weight. It's not because your body is broken or that you screwed up. It's that your body needs better support now. We need to use different tactics. When you are able to give your body these better approaches, things like eating whole foods, making our meals really balanced with a very simple structure, I'm telling you, the weight loss starts to just happen automatically. It becomes sort of an unintended consequence of your normal daily routine.
