Why Weight Loss Matters After 50
SPEAKER_00If you're over 50 and you know you need to lose weight and part of you is honestly scared about what the future might look like, please watch this because this isn't just about looking better in the mirror. It's about whether your body will still let you live your life freely, your energy, your independence, your ability to move, travel, and enjoy the years ahead. And if that feels heavy, it's because it matters. And here's the harsh truth you may or may not know. In the United States, where I live, over 70% of adults are currently overweight or obese. And after 50, waking is common. Now, having excess weight raises the risk of lots of problems, falling and breaking bones, having joint pain and arthritis, and then maybe eventually needing knee or hip surgeries, potentially losing our balance and having mobility issues, needing help with daily activities when we're older. And then, of course, risking serious diseases like heart disease, diabetes, fatty liver, kidney diseases, and even more. Now, actually, most people don't suddenly just lose their independence overnight. Instead, they lose it slowly, year by year. And as movement becomes harder, well, pain becomes kind of normal. And your confidence in your body might fade. Now that's what makes this whole thing scary. If part of you is still thinking, hmm, I'm not really there yet, but I am worried I could be one day. Well, that fear makes sense because I hear this all the time as a doctor. I don't want to be a burden. I don't want to rely on other people. I want to keep traveling, playing with my grandkids, and living my life fully for as long as possible. So this is not about vanity. This is really about your freedom and thinking about your freedom for as
Weight Loss Is Not Discipline
SPEAKER_00long as possible. Now, if we haven't met yet, I'm Dr. Anna. I'm your med diet doc. I am a medical doctor and I work with adults over 50 every single day. And here is what I know for sure: most people are not failing because they lack discipline. Instead, a lot of people feel like they're failing because they were taught to lose weight in a way that actually works against the body, especially after 50. Now, if you want to learn a healthy, realistic way to lose weight after 50, one that actually protects your energy, your strength, and your independence, I teach this step by step in my free Mediterranean weight loss webinar. There is a link in the description below this video for how you can register. Or if you're watching this right now from your TV, you're gonna see a QR code on the screen here. So you just pick up your phone, you open the camera app, hover over the code, and that link's gonna pop right up
Shift One Stop Punishing Yourself
SPEAKER_00for you. Now, let me give you something helpful right now. If you want the next year of your life to be stronger, not smaller, where you're more capable and not more restricted, well, weight loss can't be about punishment. It actually has to support your body so your body feels safe enough to let go of excess weight. So here are five shifts that you can use to get ahead and make the next year of your life the strongest year yet. Shift number one, stop treating weight loss like it's punishment. Now, a lot of people think that weight loss means just eating less and less and moving more and more, or skipping meals, or forcing yourself to constantly deal with being hungry. But truthfully, weight loss isn't really supposed to feel miserable. And when your body feels deprived, well, it's going to jump into protection mode. It's going to try to preserve its energy. And that might cause you to have different hunger spikes and crashes all the time. And your body's going to hold on to that excess fat a little bit tighter because again, fat on our body is actually a way that our body tries to protect itself. Now, after 50, this response can get even stronger for folks. So healthy weight loss cannot work if we're not addressing this point. And healthy weight loss thus should feel steady
Shift Two Build Filling Meals
SPEAKER_00and not harsh. Now, shift number two that you can think about making is to eat meals that actually keep you feeling full and steady for longer. This is where food structure matters. Now, a lot of diets approach this in a weird way, in my opinion. They're all about picking and choosing specific foods. Instead of grazing or choosing just healthy foods, I'd argue that you actually have to start thinking about the meal itself and it in its entirety. So meals should actually be built in a way that keeps our blood sugar stable and our energy even stronger. This is what I call the perfect meal formula. This is how I like to teach a healthy meal. What is a healthy meal? Well, it is any meal that includes a good source of protein, a good source of healthy fats, good sources of fiber from foods like vegetables or fruit, beans, whole grains, tons of different plant foods. Now, when meals are built this way, often our cravings start to calm down, our energy can last longer, and our hunger feels the way it should. We're hungry when it's time to eat, and then our meal makes us full enough, or we're not hungry for several more hours. So our hunger and our fullness signals are starting to normalize, and we don't feel the sense of urgency to eat as much. And by the way, I do have some free PDF resources linked below this video to make this whole concept a lot easier if you want. So now let's move into shift number three that you can think about making if you want weight loss to feel
Shift Three Train For Freedom
SPEAKER_00super easy. It's to protect your ability to move and live freely. This is what I mean. When we start trying to lose weight and we're over the age of 50, we cannot just think about the number on the scale. Most people start from that, but that is a very short-lived approach. Instead, start shifting your mind into thinking about other goals that can come with weight loss, getting up off the floor more easily, walking without fear, maybe on uneven ground, like going on a hike with your family. How about traveling more comfortably or even living without constant pain? Now, likely your goal is not just to have a smaller body. You may have not thought about it before, but if you really dig into it, think about what you want. You want to build a body you can trust. So when you think about getting more exercise as part of your weight loss routine, which is absolutely a good idea, consider how it's not just about taking things away like burning fat or losing weight. Instead, try thinking about getting more exercise as a means to add things in, adding strength, adding muscle, adding more balance, adding more energy. This one mental shift can literally leave you with so many positive effects. It is a very powerful thing. And then every healthy choice you make is not gonna feel like punishment to yourself. It's gonna feel like you're depositing an investment into your future Freedom Bank. Now, this is actually one of the biggest misunderstandings about weight loss after 50. And a lot of people think they just need more discipline and they just need to try to regimen themselves down. But in reality, they have never been shown a body supportive way to lose weight, especially after midlife. But this is exactly what I walk through in my free Mediterranean weight loss webinar. And it's why dieting stops working after 50. And instead, my webinar will help you see what actually supports your body for the long term. So if you want to register for that free webinar, remember the link is below this video in the description, or you can scan the QR code that's on the screen right now. Now let's move into shift number
Shift Four Get Real Support
SPEAKER_00four. And this is my strong recommendation to try not to just lose weight alone in isolation. Here's what I mean. One of the biggest differences I see with people that I work with in my clinical practice of those who struggle versus those who succeed is this. The people who succeed have guidance, structure, support, and an accountability system built in for them. It's not about them pressuring themselves more or shaming themselves more. It's about getting real support for the moments that it's going to feel hard or you'd want to quit. And I guarantee all of you, because we're all human beings, we will have those moments pop up for us. Now, the cool thing is it really doesn't even matter who you choose as your support system. It can be someone in your family, it can be your neighbor, it can be your friend. Ideally, it's somebody you have more contact with than just your doctor. But if you're somebody who your doctor is somebody you talk to all the time, that could be your person too. Nothing wrong with that. Or you can get some support from folks online. And this is what I like to provide in my online healthy After 50 Academy.
Shift Five Progress Over Perfection
SPEAKER_00Okay. So now let's move into shift number five to make for easy weight loss after 50, focusing on progress, not just perfection. Now, the people that I see who really succeed long term don't worry about being perfect. They have some days where they're feeling off. They have some meals that aren't really perfect, but they're always focusing on enjoying them. Yeah, they miss some workouts sometimes, or maybe not every day is as active as most of their days, but on average, they're still keeping up with their activities. They're able to travel, they're able to do things, they're able to take breaks from their normal routine without having to be scared of quitting. And then ultimately, and most important of all, they are just living their lives. Because real success is not about the number of flawless days you have. It is knowing how to recover instead of quitting when things get tough. That skill alone is usually what keeps weight from coming back. Now, inside my online Healthy After 50 Academy, I have seen some powerful changes in folks. Folks who have lost 50, 70, even more than 100 pounds with the Mediterranean system. Folks who have lowered their blood pressure, some of them have gotten off their meds, some of them have improved their lab numbers. They've reduced things like inflammation markers and some of the pain they felt. They've had some fewer cravings and the food noise that they always dealt with was getting quieted. And a lot of people have reported stable energy, for example. But most importantly, a lot of folks have expressed more freedom. And we do all this work together online, not through extremes, but through a very healthy, sustainable approach that works with your body at any age. I have folks in my academy who are more than 85 years old and they are getting results. It's
Results Plus Next Steps
SPEAKER_00incredible. Now, remember, if you're over 50 and struggling, your body is not broken. And if this video was helpful to you, and I certainly hope it was, I'd like you to share it with three people who you think it could help too. And in my next video, I'm going to explain to you why weight loss feels so hard after midlife. And we're going to go over the things that most people are getting wrong. And it's stuff that you're going to want to understand if you are trying to lose weight. This video is up here on the screen right now. Jump into it, and I'll see you over there.
