Selecting the right cutting compound can influence correction speed, finish quality and overall workshop efficiency.
This technical comparison from Independent Paint Supplies examines Meguiar’s M105 Mirror Glaze Ultra-Cut Compound alongside Farecla G3 Extra Plus Abrasive Compound, focusing on their respective roles in professional paint correction and collision repair.
Meguiar’s M105 uses Super Micro Abrasive Technology (SMAT) and is specified to remove P1200 grit or finer sanding marks, severe swirls and heavy scratches. Its rapid cutting action makes it particularly relevant to harder paint systems and demanding correction work, although a subsequent finishing polish is typically used where maximum gloss is required.
Farecla G3 Extra Plus provides medium-to-high cut and is specified for P1500 or finer sanding marks. Its filler- and silicone-free formulation, minimal throw-off, easy wipe-off and relatively refined post-compounding finish make it particularly relevant to efficient body shop workflows.
Both compounds permanently remove swirls through abrasive levelling. The appropriate choice ultimately depends on defect severity, paint hardness, required finish and available labour time.
Independent Paint Supplies supports professional body shops and detailers throughout South Wales, including Swansea and Cardiff, with more than 200 years of combined team industry experience, regional van delivery and UK-wide courier service.

Welcome back, everyone. Today we're tackling something that probably keeps a lot of professional detailers and body shop techs up at night. Choosing the right cutting compound. Specifically, we're comparing two heavy hitters, Maguire's M105 Mirrorglaze Ultra Cut Compound and Forecla G3 Extra Plus. Both promise to tackle swirl marks and serious paint defects, but they go about it in pretty different ways.
SPEAKER_00Right, and that's the key, isn't it? They're both designed for heavy correction, but the abrasive technologies behind them are quite distinct. M105 uses what McGuire's calls super microabrasive technology, SMAT for short. Basically, the abrasives are a fixed size, so they maintain a consistent cutting action throughout the entire polishing cycle.
SPEAKER_03So more passes mean more paint removal then?
SPEAKER_00Exactly. The abrasives don't break down as you work them, which gives you that predictable, aggressive cut. M105 was originally developed to remove very coarse sanding marks. We're talking P1200 grit and finer, and it's still one of the most aggressive compounds in McGuire's professional range. It excels at severe swirl marks, deep scratches, oxidation, even water spot etching.
SPEAKER_03And for Ecla G3 Extra Plus? How does it stack up in terms of cut level?
SPEAKER_00G3 Extra Plus provides what I'd call a medium to high cut. It's a professional Step 1 compound, formulated specifically for modern automotive paint systems. It's designed to quickly remove 1,500 or finer sanding marks and leave a good gloss finish straight away. The abrasive technology is engineered not to diminish significantly, so you get a faster initial cut while still producing an excellent finish.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. Makes sense. So would you say M105 is the more aggressive of the two?
SPEAKER_00Definitely. M105 is generally regarded as the more aggressive compound. G3 Extra Plus, on the other hand, balances strong cutting performance with a cleaner finish and easier wipe off.
SPEAKER_03Let's talk swirl removal then. Both products permanently remove swirls rather than just filling them in, right?
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. That's critical. Swirl marks are those fine micro scratches in the clear coat, often from poor washing techniques or automatic car washes. Both compounds remove them through abrasive correction. M105 is brilliant for severe swirl marks, heavy wash marring, and hard clear coats. G3 Extra Plus performs exceptionally well on moderate to heavy swirls, freshly painted panels, and refinishing work. And because G3 contains no fillers or silicones, those scratches don't reappear after washing.
SPEAKER_03That body shop safe aspect is huge, especially for collision repair centers.
SPEAKER_00Oh, absolutely. Body shop safe means no silicones, waxes, or contaminants that could interfere with painting or refinishing. You avoid defects like fish eyes, and you get a true defect-free finish without hidden surprises. I remember early in my career, uh, I used a compound that wasn't body shop safe on a freshly sprayed panel. Had to strip and respray the whole thing because of fish eyes. Never made that mistake again.
SPEAKER_03Ouch! That's an expensive lesson. Though I bet you check product labels pretty carefully now, right?
SPEAKER_00You know it. Every single time.
SPEAKER_03Now, working characteristics. This is where things get practical. How do they actually perform when you're on the job?
SPEAKER_00Well, M105 is incredibly fast. You get rapid defect removal, particularly on hard paint systems, but it can generate a fair bit of dusting and may require careful technique. Some detailers employ techniques like misting with water to extend working time and minimize dust, though this isn't an official recommendation from McGuire's. It's designed as a fast working compound with a short working time. Level the defects quickly, then move on.
SPEAKER_03And G3 Extra Plus?
SPEAKER_00G3 Extra Plus is recognized for clean operation, minimal throw-off, easy wipe off. Ideal for busy body shop environments where productivity matters. You're not constantly cleaning your pads or wiping residue. That's a real time saver.
SPEAKER_03That point about clean operation sets up our next piece, pad selection. But first, a quick word from our sponsor.

SPEAKER_03Picking up on clean operation, how do you handle pad selection with these two compounds?
SPEAKER_00Great question. Both compounds are compatible with rotary and dual action polishers, and they work well with wool cutting pads or heavy-cut foam pads. But selecting the correct pad is just as important as the compound itself. A more aggressive pad increases correction, but may leave more haze or marring, so you'll need additional refinement afterward.
SPEAKER_03So really it's the compound, the pad, and the technique. Three things working together.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. And then there's the finishing stage. M105 is commonly followed by a dedicated finishing polish to maximize gloss, especially on darker colors. Forecla recommends following G3 Extra Plus with G3 Fine Finishing Compound to remove any remaining swirls or holograms for that heightened gloss finish. In other words, both products work best as part of a multi-step process rather than a single-stage solution.
SPEAKER_03Right, that multi-step approach really makes a difference. So which compound should someone actually choose?
SPEAKER_00Well, it depends on the job. Choose M105 if you need maximum cutting performance, severe scratches, heavy swirl marks, hard paint systems. It's best for experienced professionals who can manage the technique. Choose G3 Extra Plus if you're doing collision repair, refinishing fresh paint, or you want a cleaner working compound that's body shop safe. It's excellent for removing 1,500 pesos sanding marks and delivers a good balance of cut and finish.
SPEAKER_03You know, I had a situation once where I was working on a dark metallic panel with heavy wash marring. Used M105 with a wool pad, and the correction was unbelievable. But I definitely had to follow up with a finishing polish to get that mirror finish.
SPEAKER_00That's a perfect example. M105 delivers that rapid correction, but the refinement step is essential. With G3 Extra Plus, you might get closer to your final finish sooner, but you still want to follow it up for maximum clarity.
SPEAKER_03I see, absolutely. And once you've done all that hard work, protecting the finish is vital. What should listeners be thinking about there?
SPEAKER_00Once heavy correction is complete, apply a quality wax, synthetic sealant, or ceramic coating. That helps preserve gloss, reduce UV damage, improve water repellency, and resist environmental contamination. And maintain safe washing techniques afterward. That's how you keep those swirl marks from coming back.
SPEAKER_03So to everyone listening, whether you're in a body shop or running a mobile detailing business, both M105 and G3 Extra Plus are outstanding professional products. M105 gives you maximum cutting power for severe defects. G3 Extra Plus brings strong correction with clean operation and body shop safe performance. Have you ever wondered which compound would save you the most time on your next correction job?
SPEAKER_00And really, the most effective compound is the one that matches the condition of the paint, the polishing equipment you're using, and the finish you want to achieve while preserving as much clear coat as possible.
SPEAKER_03Perfect. Thanks so much for breaking that down with me today. Give both a try and see which fits your workflow. Until next time, stay sharp and keep those finishes flawless.
