Why am I gaining weight in perimenopause even when I eat well?
A shift in gut microbial composition can cause certain bacterial strains to extract more calories from your food, drive systemic inflammation, and disrupt hunger signaling hormones. This continues regardless of how clean your diet is until the bacterial environment itself is addressed.
Can gut health affect your estrogen levels during perimenopause?
Yes. A specific community of gut bacteria called the estrobolome is responsible for metabolizing estrogen. When that system is disrupted, harmful estrogen metabolites accumulate while beneficial forms are cleared too fast, producing significant symptoms even when hormone panels test within the normal range.
Why does my anxiety feel bigger than my life actually warrants?
90 to 95% of the body's serotonin is produced in the gut, not the brain. When the bacterial populations responsible for serotonin and GABA production decline, the nervous system loses access to the compounds it needs to stay regulated, and no amount of stress management will fully close that gap.
