What if a 5,000 year old practice outperforms modern nutrition for women over 40? If you have done everything right with food and still cannot lose weight, this is for you. After 25 years as a nutritionist, I stopped starting with food altogether, and everything changed. I used to hand every client a meal plan on day one. Now I ask a completely different question first, and it has changed every single outcome since.
In this episode, I'm going to show you why clean eating stops working after 40, and the one question you need to ask your body before you ever ask what to eat.

β QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Q: Why does clean eating stop working for women over 40?
A: Hormone shifts, higher cortisol, and changes in gut bacteria after 40 change how your body processes food, even when the food itself is healthy. Standard nutrition advice was never built to account for these changes, which is why the same clean meals that worked at 30 stop delivering results.
Q: What should women over 40 do before changing their diet?
A: Ask whether your body can actually process what you are giving it, not just what to eat. Repairing gut and hormone function first is what allows any nutrition plan to actually work, instead of adding another restrictive diet on top of a system that is already struggling.
Q: Does meal timing matter more than food choice after 40?
A: Yes. Digestive power peaks around midday and drops by evening, so making dinner your biggest meal overloads a system that is already winding down. Shifting your largest meal to lunch and keeping dinner light and early often reduces bloating fast and helps the body actually use the nutrients you eat.

What if I told you a 5,000-year-old practice outperforms modern nutrition for women? If you've done everything right with your nutrition but still can't lose the weight, this is going to be helpful for you. Here's the part that took me 25 years to fully understand. The problem was never your discipline. It was never really your food. There's a practice that's 5,000 years old that keeps outperforming modern nutrition for women over 40 every single time. And once I started using it first, before anything else, everything changed for my clients and for myself. So let me show you why the clean eating stopped working and one thing that you can do to change that tonight. I'm Valeria, I'm a nutritionist, I am 49, and I trained in Western nutrition, clinical nutrition, the science, all of it. But after years of watching women do everything by the book and still get stuck, I started doing the one thing that my training skipped. And I want to walk you through it because it's probably the exact piece that you've been missing. Let me start with something that made me angry when I really understood it. Most of the nutrition advice that you've been giving, and we've all been handed, was built on research that mostly studied men. And women were included when that happened. Almost nobody separated out what happens to a woman's body after 40. And that matters because after 40, your body is running a different show. Your hormones fluctuate, both estrogen and progesterone, they drop, they rise, so they become unpredictable to say the least. Your cortisol tends to be higher, to sit higher. And the bacteria living in your gut, that's the third thing, start to shift. So those three things change how you handle food at a really basic level. None of the standard advice accounts for any of that. So you were following a map drawn for somebody else's body, basically, and then you blame yourself when it didn't get you where you want it to be. Here's what I want you to sit with today. Modern nutrition obsesses over food, what to eat, what not to eat, how much, where are the right macros. And we even use apps to calculate and track all of that. And for a woman over 40, that is the wrong place to start because I imagine that you have much better things to do with your time, right? Now let me give you a picture. Imagine um fireplace. You keep putting wood into it, very good quality, dry wood, just the right kind, exactly what you're supposed to burn. But the flu is blocked. The fire never really catches. The wood is perfect, the fireplace just can't do its job properly. That's a gut that's inflamed and hormonally out of rhythm. The food going in might be excellent, but your body's ability to turn it into energy isn't working. So instead of fuel, you get bloating. Instead of energy, you get that 3 pream crash, and instead of releasing the fat, your body holds on to it. This is a question that Ayurveda has asked for 5,000 years before it even tells you what to eat. Can this body process what it's being given? Western nutrition skipped that question completely. It assumed everyone's gut works in the same way. For women over 40, that assumption is where it falls apart. I see it in my practice constantly. Women eating beautifully, good protein, real vegetables, nothing processed. They're making a proper effort here. And they're bloated after every meal, wiped out by mid-afternoon. The scale hasn't moved in months, not to mention the aches and pains that arise and rotate from knees to hips to shoulders, the muscles and tendons that get injured more easily. What about that? Because here's what's happening underneath. When the gut lining is inflamed, it starts letting things into the bloodstream that don't belong there. And your body reads that as a threat. It goes into a survival state. And a body in survival mode does not care about losing fat. It cares about getting you out of the threat through that dangers. It holds on to everything. This is the whole thing. Your body isn't failing, it's trying to protect you. Before it will ever build anything, a stronger metabolism, more energy. It has to feel safe. Survive first, then repair, then build. You cannot skip all the way to the building and overpass the other two. Okay? Let me tell you about a woman I worked with. She is an IT specialist, 52, a high stress job. She'd been overweight her whole life. She came to me on a CPU mask for sleep apnea with reflux, gas, joint pain, mood swings, and a brain fog that scared her at work. She came to me to lose weight. She couldn't control her cravings. She was constantly trying to snack because she needed that fast energy. And the first thing I got obsessed with wasn't her weight at all. It was her body temperature. She was running cold. And that one sign told me that her digestion and her metabolism were barely keeping the lights on, let alone her liver. So we didn't start with a diet. We started with her digestion, using these old Ayurvedic principles, getting her body warm enough to calm and to be safe enough to actually process food again in a way that would fuel her. This means goodbye, urgent hunger and sugar cravings. Her body was being fueled now. And here's the order that it happened in. First, she started sleeping better. Then the mood and her focus changed dramatically. Her focus actually came back and she could handle her stressful job instead of drowning in it. Then the weight started coming off, and she lost 20 kilos by now. Her sleep apnea is reversing, and she gets up at dawn to go fly hot air balloons because she finally has the energy and the body to do it. She told me a week ago in one of our calls that in her aqua class, she can lift her knee and tap it with her shoulder. Sorry, with her elbow. And she said, Valeria, I have abs after all. 20 kilos. But notice the weight came last. We fixed the fireplace first. So let me ask you three quick things. Just answer honestly in your head. You don't have to write, well, you can write them the answers in the comments if you like as well. But answer this honestly in your head for yourself so you can understand what might be going on. One, when you eat a good clean meal, how do you feel an hour later? Like genuinely energized or heavy and sluggish, like you need to lie down and take a nap? Two, have you lost weight before? Hit a wall where it just stopped no matter what you did, and then gain it all back, sometimes even more? And number three, does all of this get worse in the two weeks before your period, if you still have your period? More bloating, stronger cravings, the skill climbing, even though nothing really changed? If two or more of those are a yes, your food choices are not the only problem here, or not the real problem. The state your body is trying to process them is the problem. If two or more of those are a yes, your food choices are not the real problem here. The state your body is trying to process them is the problem. That's an inflamed gut, high cortisol and shifting hormones all at once. And the tell is almost always the same. You can point to a window, late 30s, early 40s, when the exact same approach worked, same food, same effort, results, and then for some reason it quietly stopped. Nothing changed in what you were doing, everything changed in what your body was doing with it. So here's where to start, and it has nothing to do with which foods you're eating. It's about when, okay? Most women over 40 make dinner the big meal. And I get why. You're busy all day, dinner's the one that you actually sit down for, you have more time to cook, probably. But your digestive power peaks around the middle of the day and drops right off by the evening. So you're dropping your heaviest meal into a system that is already closing the shop and basically winding down so you can sleep and repair overnight. Then overnight, instead of resting, your gut is working through a backlog. You wake up bloated, your sleep was lighter than it should be, and maybe that inflammation runs all night. So tonight, don't make dinner your main meal. Tomorrow make lunch, the real one, the powerful one, a full plate, protein, vegetables, good fat, and keep dinner light and early. Try to make it before 7 if you can. 8 p.m. tops. Then just notice how you feel when you wake up the next day. A lot of women are surprised how fast the morning bloating starts to lift. And that is your gut getting a night off instead of a night shift. So give your body some rest. This is super important for proper fueling and for proper functioning of all these bodily functions that need to happen overnight. That's why they they are so intensely demanding for your body that they need to happen overnight when you're doing nothing else. Detoxifying, building hormones, breaking down things, repairing your gut, all these functions go on while you sleep. So give your body the time and the opportunity to actually do it. If you're sitting there thinking, okay, but how do I know if my gut is actually the thing holding me back? I made a whole video on exactly that. The warning signs that your perimenopause symptoms are really a gut problem in disguise. If any of this sounded like you, watch that one next because I'll tell you there where you're actually standing, and you will have a lot of diagnostic questions there as well. Again, modern nutrition is a powerful tool. No one can deny that. It's just not built for the body you're living in right now. There's a reason a 5,000-year-old practice still gets results that calorie math can't explain. It started with a better question. Not what you should eat, whether your body can actually use what you give it. Fix that, and everything you've been doing right will finally get you the results that you want. It will finally start to work. If this made anything click for you, subscribe so the next one finds you and watch whether your gut is the missing piece. I'll see you there. Okay? Now, if you want to see the whole sequence, how to repair the gut first, then reset the metabolism, then let the weight actually release and stay released. I made a video walking through the whole thing step by step. It's linked on the screen and in the description. So go watch that next, and I really hope it helps. See you there.
