Pain has a way of shrinking your world fast, one canceled workout, one skipped walk, one “maybe next week.” We sit down with Dr. Alexander Telfair to talk about a different approach to chiropractic care in Sarasota, one built for active adults who want to move better, feel better, and stay in the game without jumping straight to unnecessary procedures or downtime.

We get into Dr. Telfair’s origin story, from graduating in 2024 to making the bold choice to start his own clinic because his vision for care didn’t fit the usual quick visit model. He explains why he focuses on conservative, comprehensive care that aims to fix the problem and help prevent it from coming back, with patient education and practical tools that support independence. You’ll hear how he began with a mobile practice, how a season on Longboat Key helped him build a patient base, and why he ultimately moved to downtown Sarasota to better serve the community year round.

We also talk about the business side of healthcare: why word of mouth marketing and trusted referrals from other doctors matter, how he’s learning Google SEO to show up when people search for pain relief and mobility help, and why this podcast is part of his next growth step. If you’ve ever wondered what to look for in a Sarasota chiropractor, or how a clinician measures real success, this conversation delivers a grounded, honest perspective.

If you enjoyed it, subscribe, share with a friend who’s been slowed down by pain, and leave a review so more people can find the show. What’s one activity you’re trying to get back to?

Welcome everyone. I'm Melanie Winter, co-host and producer here in the studio with Dr. Alexander Telfair, chiropractic physician at Telfair Chiropractic. How's it going today?

SPEAKER_02

I'm doing very well. How about yourself?

SPEAKER_00

Great. Thank you for asking.

Why He Started His Own Clinic

SPEAKER_00

And so over the years, you've worked with many families across Sarasota. However, some listeners might not be familiar with your full journey. So let's take it from the top. Could you share a little background about your company and what you do?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so a little bit about my company. So I graduated from National University in 2024 in the spring. I had graduated Sumicum Law. I was the salutatorian in my class. And I getting out into clinical practice, I had the choice of either associating with another clinic, chiropractic clinic, or otherwise, or starting my own shop. And I had seen somebody in the trimester ahead of me start their own clinic, which is something that is kind of like the few the brave do, because it's a it's a big step and you don't really learn entrepreneurship in school. So I was lucky enough to have some teachers that did uh teach that as a side thing. You know, they would be like, hey, you need to know this, so here's a lecture on it, kind of thing. So that was actually fantastic. Um, but yeah, so I decided that I wanted to go do my own thing simply because the way that I treat is different and I have a different vision for patient care. Um, a lot of chiropractors, especially in the Sarasota area, are more traditional chiropractors, right? Um, you're gonna kind of go in, get adjusted, and get out. They might give you some rehab, they might do a little bit of soft tissue, that kind of thing. I was far more interested in really uh, I guess fixing a problem, but also preventing it from reoccurring and teaching people how to prevent it from reoccurring. If they want to choose to come see me, that's fine. But I at least want to give them all the tools possible for them to be independent and thrive on their own. Because to me, that that's what I would want my doctor to do for me. You know, I'd like to get fixed and then take the information to stay better and run with it kind of thing. And so that was kind of my vision, and I decided to go ahead and start my own practice with that vision and uh of just kind of getting empowering patients for independence, right? To have their independence. And um, I started off with a mobile practice. I was kind of driving to different residences because I couldn't afford the overhead of getting an office and stuff like that. Um, I had no money in my pocket at all. So I'm driving and uh, you know, basically saved up some pennies doing mobile visits, and then eventually I migrated to Longboat Key in September of 24. And I was very fortunate to meet the uh the Paradise Center out there. They're shout out to them. They without them, I wouldn't have uh been able to start as well as I did. It would have just been a longer journey for sure. So they helped me out a ton. They gave me a spot to practice on Longboat Key. I was the only provider on Longboat Key. So I was able to really get a good uh, you know, imprint on that population. And you know, everybody I treat is a marketing opportunity. So not to mention I want the best for everybody anyway, but um with those two factors motivating me to get the patient outcomes, I was I'm very driven to um, you know, get the results that patients are looking for. I yeah, I I strongly dislike when anybody ever leaves my office without getting something out of it, you know, which really never happens because I don't allow that to happen. I'm not a fan of it. But yeah, so with that kind of mentality, I was able to develop my patient base on long boat, and I was there in the season, which was great, but then I realized that uh yeah, the season, once it ends, it is completely dead. Like, I mean, you can see dust going across the road. It's almost eerie how slow it is out there. So I was like, this is not sustainable. So I went from longboat to downtown Sarasota, and that's where I'm currently at, helping uh the active adults of this area.

Marketing Through Trust And Results

SPEAKER_00

And we know that marketing is key to any business's success. So how do you market your business?

SPEAKER_02

I um again, because capital is is in the equation, right? I really rely on uh word of mouth. That is probably my biggest marketing tool. So again, every patient I treat is a marketing opportunity. And uh B is gonna be referrals. So I earn the trust of the doctors I work with. So they send me one patient and the patient goes back and they're like, oh my gosh, that guy is awesome, you know. And then they send me, they keep sending them to me. So as long as I keep those those bridges happy, which I I tend to do, or I certainly thrive towards it, you know, I do my best. Um, I'm sure, you know, things occur where some pay maybe one or two of them had a surgical condition that I couldn't really do too much for, but they were still happy with what I did. It was just a matter of it was out of my hands at that juncture. It was time had you know done its uh its damage sort of thing. But so those, so I would say referral-based and then uh word of mouth, and then I've been playing around with Google a lot more. Um I've been, you know, because of this AI stuff, I can go learn all this code and like you know, all these things with uh search engine optimization with Google. So I've been really digging into that a lot, uh, kind of becoming my own marketing specialist in a way. And then this this podcast now, which I'm very excited for because um I am a little bit reluctant to make content. I always have a lot to say, um, clearly, but um I yeah, I don't know. I need people that to help me to get it out there, I suppose. So I'm very excited for this opportunity. So this is my next marketing venture.

SPEAKER_00

Excellent.

Life Outside The Clinic

SPEAKER_00

And when you're not busy running your business, what do you do for fun?

SPEAKER_02

I generally work out, although I recently injured myself, so I'm taking a little break right now, although I'm still doing a ton of PT. So I that kind of counts as a workout, I guess. Um, and then play basketball, um, fishing, family time is huge for me. I spend a lot of time with my family. Um, I got my niece and nephew, they're growing up so fast, or like, yeah, they're just sprouting like feathers, so it's it's crazy. Um and then yeah, outside of that, not I work a lot. Yeah, I work a lot, but luckily I love what I do. Um, but it definitely I need those distractions of family time and working out and stuff to kind of keep the passion for work because no matter how much you love something, doing the same thing over and over again 24-7 gets exhausting. And then you lose that that motivation, that passion for it. So I try to keep that that balance of being able to be as busy as possible with work while also maintaining that motivation and passion for it. Because I do love what I do, absolutely. It's it's very fun.

Purpose Patient Wins And Mission

SPEAKER_02

That's it's the most rewarding thing ever. Like, if I could have this job and not make a dollar, I would still do it because it's so fun to just help people. Like I've been that person who's hurt and goes to somebody and you're reliant on them, and you and you kind of give your trust to them to get better, and to be that individual that's able to help people to get better and kind of get back to that quality of life that they're chasing, or even better than what it was prior, is so cool. You know what I mean? Um, yeah, I've gotten some very rewarding emails over the years of uh, or I guess the past uh couple years, but um, of just patients, you know, stating, you know, I wasn't able to to walk when I first came in and now I'm biking around for eight miles a day. Like stuff like that is just so cool to hear. Um, because it's just, you know, that's an impact that you had on their life for for the better. That um, and that's that's kind of like one of my I have like two things in life that I want to thrive towards. Like one is becoming the best version of me, and two is to kind of leave this place a better place than I found it. You know what I mean? So, and that to me, that mission is like helping as many people as I possibly can while I'm here.

SPEAKER_00
