Welcome to Human Services Stories, Management, Customer, and Staff Voices. I'm Clinton Lewis and I'm glad you're here. Today's episode is about doing the next right thing. In human services, there are moments where everything feels complicated. Me have a large caseload, difficult decisions, and situations with no perfect answer. That is one of the most powerful strategies to stay calm, remain focused, and avoid panic. The main thing is not to panic. The next right thing is often the best thing you can do. The next right thing could be returning the call, completing a form, following up with the family, checking on a client, or making a decision that moves the case forward. It may feel small, but some actions can build momentum. And momentum is what helps you move through the difficult seasons and make progress. When you are overwhelmed, it is easy to get stuck thinking about everything you need to do. But when you focus on the next right thing, you take the pressure off trying to solve everything at once. You center yourself, you slow your breathing, and you stay calm. Then you choose the next step that matters and move forward. Human service is the next right thing. It's not also about task. It is about care. It is about showing up for someone in a way that makes them feel supported. It is about making a decision that is fair and thoughtful. It is about using your judgment in a way that protects and serves the people who depend on you. That kind of work takes discipline, it takes focus, and it takes resilience. Resilience does not mean pretending to work that the work is easy. It means continuing to move forward even when the path is unclear. It means learning how to steady yourself, reset your thinking, and keep going without losing your purpose. It means understanding that progress is often built one decision, one conversation, and one act of care at a time. When the pressure rises, remind yourself do not rush into fear. Do not let stress decide for you. You must stay grounded, remain focused, and the main thing is not to panic. You do not have to see the whole path to keep walking. You just have to take the next step. Coaching moment for this episode, I want you to ask yourself, number one, what is the next right thing I can do today? Number two, where am I getting where am I getting stuck because I want to do everything at once? Number three, how can I focus on one step at a time? And number four, what small action can move a case forward? And I want you to say to yourself, I will stay calm, I will remain focused, I will do the next right thing. And remember, you do not have to see the whole path to keep walking. You must and you just have to take the next step. You just have to do the next right thing. When you focus on the next step at a time, you build momentum, you build progress, you build confidence, and you build resilience for the road ahead. So take the next step, do the next right thing, stay calm, remain focused, and trust that you are moving forward. And remember, you got this.
