Welcome to Human Services Stories Management Customer Style Voices. I'm your host, Clinton Lewis, and I'm glad you're here. Today's episode is called Respond with Wisdom. There will be moments in this work when emotions run high, a customer may be frustrated, a family may be afraid, co-worker may be overwhelmed, and the situation may not go according to plan. You know, in those moments, you know, it often becomes easy to react. But strong service causes us to respond. Reaction is immediate. It is driven by emotion. Often happens before we have taken time to understand the full situation. But responding is different. Responding means pausing, gathering information, thinking clearly, and choosing an action that supports the mission. Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize what you are feeling, understand how those feelings may affect your response, and to manage them in a way that serves the situation. It does not mean ignoring your feelings, it does not means not letting them control you. If you're frustrated, you have to acknowledge it. If you're tired, you have to recognize it. And if you feel defensive, pause before speaking and moving forward. Then return to the questions that matter. What does this person need right now? What are the facts? What is my responsibility? And what response is respectful, safe, and appropriate? Those questions can help you move forward from reaction to wisdom. Responding with wisdom also requires compassion. Person's anger may come from fear. Their silence may come from shame. Their resistance may come from past disappointment. That doesn't mean inappropriate behavior is acceptable. It means that we take time to understand before we assume. We can maintain boundaries while remaining respectful. We can be clear about expectations while staying calm. We can address concerns without losing our dignity or taking away someone else's. You know that's strength. Wisdom also includes knowing when to seek help. If a situation is beyond your role, ask for guidance. If the policy is unclear, clarify it. If a customer's safety is involved, follow required procedures and involve the appropriate people. Self-reliance means taking ownership. Wisdom means knowing that you do not have to guess or carry everything alone. Every difficult moment can become a chance to grow. You may not respond perfectly every time, but you can reflect afterwards. You know, what happened? What did I feel? What worked? What would I do differently next time? That reflection helps build stronger judgment, stronger relationships, and stronger service. And a coach moment for this episode, I want you to ask yourself, what such one, what situation is asking for me to respond rather than react? Two, what em what emotion do I need to recognize before I act? Three, what facts or guidance do I need before making a decision? And four, how do I communicate with calm, compassion, and clarity? Why don't you take a moment, say this to yourself, I'll respond with wisdom, I'll remain calm, understand the situation, and act with purpose. In our closing moment for this episode, once you remember do not let pressure control your response. Pause, focus, and and choose wisdom. That's how you protect the work, the people you serve, and your own peace. And remember, you got this.
