In this episode I talk to DJ, Producer, Record Store owner and one of the dopest individuals to come out of the Boston Hip-Hop scene, 7L. 7L's work with his partner Esoteric as the group 7L & Esoteric, has been tearing up the Hip-Hop underground since the 90's. 7L & Esoteric teamed up with Wu-Tang Clan's Inspectah Deck in the 2000's on the songs "Speaking Real Words" & "The 12th Chamber. In the 2010's, to the present day, they have taken the world by storm as CZARFACE. Just a very prolific producer. So you know, had to run down the Ultra Max 7 on him. We had a great conversation. You know, some treats that are coming down the road. And we have Seven L. Hello, hello. What's happened? Good, good, man. I'm happy to be here, man. It's my pleasure. You know, I'm I'm I'm a big fan. But but I'm going to tell you this. I'm going to get to you a little bit later. I'll tell you why. I wasn't always a big fan, but I'll tell you why.

I know your your background, you you are Greek, am I correct? Yeah, correct. So I wanted to ask, what is your favorite Greek dish?

Um, probably uh either Avagolamino, the Greek soup, or pasticho. It's probably a toss up between both. Uh obviously, you know, spinach pie, grape leaves. I I enjoy a lot of it. Um not big on lamb, which I know is you know very Greek specific. Uh and you know, I I I I eat it, you know, of course, but uh, you know, when it's at a f at some sort of family gathering, but it's not my first choice. But yeah, pesticho or you know, I will em and all the Greek soup, definitely. Yeah.

Okay, so now thinking about those dishes, did like a family member, like say your mother, grandmother, like somebody cook those or like. Oh yeah, yeah.

So yes, and also, you know, my family, uh my father and uncle, they uh they have a Greek restaurant. It's still up and running, and I worked there you know, pretty much my whole life up until you know uh I opened up the uh the first record store in 2017. So yeah, uh so I you know grew up working in a Greek restaurant uh around Greek food all the time and serving it and all that kind of stuff. So yes, it was very much very much around New Brothers Deli. I want to shout that out. Okay, yeah, yeah, shout out to that. Yeah, yeah, New Brothers Deli in Danvers. That's that's my dad. So yeah, yeah.

You know, d doing a little background, checking out interviews and stuff, yeah. A couple similarities, and I I think I've I've listened to an interview and it said you skateboarded back in the day.

Yeah, up until like 90, and in like high school, it like just just kind of fell off a little bit, you know what I mean? I uh yeah, and then I got I got back into it in my 30s again just for kind of physical reasons, and I you know, I broke an ankle, sprained a rib, and I think by 35 I just realized I should probably take it easy. Yeah, you know, and I got myself a bike, uh a PK Ripper, and said that this will this will take care of my youth, my uh live reliving my youth, you know what I mean?

So that's a little safer, you know what I mean? Yeah, you gotta be I'm gonna even before I get to the question, you brought up the PK Ripper. I used to have a I used to have a Skyway street styler back in the day, like oh.

Yeah, it red lies the you know, and I and I listened to getting, yeah, I looked into getting like one of the, you know, but I was like, this will be a little more maybe even practical because I can like use it day to day, I can take a feeding, and it's a little bigger. So uh yeah, you know, I I uh I still ride that, you know, occasionally for sure.

Nice, so again, again to stay active. Okay. Well, the question I want to ask is question number two. Who was your favorite skateboarder back in the day?

Um you know, there's probably a lot. It's hard to nail down just one. I could say Mark Gonzalez for sure. That that the first vision, the skate deck, that first one was like everything, you know what I mean? I think it was like was the 85, 86 TV. Uh and I had a few of those. I know they came with like different colors, like backgrounds. Um and that was like the it was almost like the quintessential 80s board. It was like mean, you know, um the style of the game. That gator.

You know, uh, but you know, definitely like uh the out, you know, Alva, the Tony Alva and his skate team, you know, they I thought it was like the coolest team because they were like pretty menacing. Uh really dope logo, you know what I mean? It was very simple. Um, so I'd say that, you know, but like definitely like like Natus, Natus Kapus, Ray Barbie were like the best natural skaters, you know what I mean?

So uh 7L was greeted by some uh some patrons who had imbibed just a little bit. We won't uh play any of that conversation, but we'll pick back up with the Ultra Max 7. Um okay, so we we were talking about um skateboarding.

Um yeah, oh you for so for sure Mark Gonzalez, um Natus, Ray Barbie, you can watch him endlessly. He's just flawless uh skater. But Neil Blender, I love Neil Blender. I he uh he just had he always kind of like did his own thing in a way, you know what I mean? He had his own like I don't know, style however you want to like say style, like that. That the very first is like whatever video it was, you know, I got at the skate shop, it was like um it was a contest, and he he was like you know, kicking his board up and hitting it down with his hand, and at the end of it he just like painted the painted the wall. He kind of was just like doing goofy stuff, but also kind of like skate pretty cool, and like you know, it was dope. So I think he, you know, and he does his own art as well. So Neil Blender, I think those four, you know, definitely I lean more towards 80s, you know, um skaters in general, you know what I mean? Yeah, um, because that was like you know, 84 to like I think 91. I I'm I it was like around sophomore year, I kind of slowed down. I got more into DJing, got more into you know other things, I think. You know what I mean? You know what's crazy?

When I was in high school, I was like I was in a rap group, right? Yeah, so this is what's crazy. Like when we're talking about skating back then, yeah, skateboarding was like punk rock.

And then so I would be like one day with my friends, we're going to the studio recording demos, but then I'm like, Y'all want to skate? And they're like, yo, what are you doing? Are you making music?

Yeah, well, you know, it's funny, you know. I remember like when we would go to skate contests, like even local ones around here, you know, there'd be the older kids, like they're probably only like a couple years older, but you know, we're in like the seventh grade, they're freshmen, you know, and they were playing like, you know, whatever it was, gangrene and you know, stuff like that. Like while like during their set. So I remember we entered it and all the younger kids were like, you know, play King T or we're playing hip hop, public enemy, you know what I mean? It was like funny to see how it was like, you know, all the older kids still like, you know, punk and and metal and stuff like that. Like they don't like during their their kind of runs, they like, you know, that's the music they were choosing choosing to play, where we were like, you know, play E Pm D I'm House and things, you know what I mean?

While I go out, you know, so it's gonna always interesting because it was such a distinct, like anybody who was like, you know, older than 13 was you know, punk and stuff like that, and all the younger kids were like, you know, play hip hop and you know, so it was it was so weird for me because I saw the transition of going like one day it was punk and then the next day it was hip hop, yeah, and it was like the the whole you know, the super baggy pants, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Early, yeah, all the early 90s, yeah, yeah, all that stuff. I watched that happen. World industries and blinds, yes, exactly. You know, all the kids I knew used to wear, you know, whatever it was. Now, you know, now it's just like you know, khakis like the size of trash bags, and you know what I mean? Like a I remember I remember that, man, you know. Around that site, you know, a lot of my friends still were skating, still, and when we would hang out, I noticed the style shift, like so dripp, you know, like just crazy, you know? Yeah, and it overlap again with a lot of hip hop aesthetic, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah.

Wow. That's uh, but even the people you're saying it, that's it. So I was I was I was uh Mark Gonzalez, I was Nanis, Tommy Guerrero.

Yeah, I mean that's something that like once you you know really start thinking of names, it's like it just it's like oh man, yeah, you know what I mean.

I was big into like in my town, a couple kids had like uh half pipes, but I was really into street skating. This is what street skating really took off.

Same, same. Like, you know, like I could never, you know, a bunch of kids I knew had backyard ramps, and I would like ride them, but I I wouldn't really get much above the lip, you know. I I just I was just like pretty well grounded, you know. Um and yeah, it was all you know, you know, going into Boston and going to government center and stuff like that. It was yeah, okay.

Yeah, that's just like me. Like, so I was in Jersey, but we would take the bus into Philly and go skate in L Park. We'd be skating well parking. Yeah, same thing. All right. Okay, I see. I love talking. There's a few few hip hop guys I knew skate, like mocha only. He's a big skater. I talk to him. I love talking skating with like you know, hip-hop guy.

I just turned 50, so I don't know.

I don't know. I'm with you, but like it's cool, like I'll I'll get on it, I'll do like a kick flip, maybe like a shove it, and I'm like, okay, that's it. That's it. I can still they still look kind of cool, so people like, oh, you know, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh no, kick flip and shove it, and that's it. Yeah. So let's get to question number three. Question number three. You know, so which store did you frequent most in the north north shore mall? North Shore.

Was there a skateboard shop? You know, there wasn't, you know, there actually wasn't in the mall. I guess, you know, obviously as a kid I would go to Toys R Us when I was like a child, but uh, you know, when I was getting older, there was a store like at the North Shore Mall specifically uh called His Place that I don't I don't know if it was too big of a chain. It was a small stuff like a Merry-go-Round, it was like a chess king. You could get, you know, IOU sweatshirts and guests and Z Capricis and stuff like that. So that was like where it was positioned, and still, even when I go to the mall now and walk, it's not there. It was only there for a couple years. Chess King and stuff like that carried on and Merry Go-Around, but um, yeah, it was like right across from Atomican. So you'd go over there and get like, they'd have like, you know, I remember I got like it was like purple square here on a shirt and black here, and then the purple square on the opposite leg, and you go to Toma Ken and get like the slip-on shoes and go to the high school day. Yeah, as but his place, I yeah, I used to like going there. They had like, you know, it was kind of they had a little, you know, dress, dressy stuff like that, like you know, the hammer, you know, calm hammer pants or whatever, but stuff like that. But they also had again like get, you know, guests, like the striped shirts, Z Cap Ritchies, and overalls, stuff like that, you know what I mean? So it was like, you know, a good mix of you know, dressy and whatnot. Um, and again, it was like different. It wasn't like, you know, not that I was like thinking like this then, but it wasn't like you know, Chess King, not you know, they were everywhere. This one I was like, oh, it's just like you know, I didn't know what it was. Oh, there's like a boutique type store or something, you know what I mean? So very, very curated, I felt like, you know what I mean? Like they had stuff that other places didn't, so uh but probably his place, I think, for sure. Yeah.

Like, yeah, oh, I wish I kept all that stuff too, you know, and across from it would be like, you know, this is early. Now it's very common in the malls, but like having those carts in the middle of the mall, you know, like uh selling stuff. I mean, a dude in kind of the mix of all these, he you get like those bootleg Gucci sweatshirts that were like early 90s, like 89, 90. You could get he had those, he had like hip sacks, like fake those fake leather ones, uh, you know, African medallions, all that kind of stuff. We would just go there and buy stuff all the time for me. I wish I kept all this stuff. Because you figure when they go out of style, like, oh, this is you know, I'm never gonna wear this. Especially back then things were pretty immediate. Like, oh, that was you know, something you might have worn the summer before was like way played out by the next year.

You're like, I can't do it. All right, I love reminiscing. Let's get to question number four. Question number four. You know, we're we're of the MTV generation. You know, I remember when, you know, videos and everything. Yeah. Who who was your favorite MTV VJ back in the day?

Um I mean, Fat Five Freddy. Does that count? Or I mean obviously Fat Five Freddy.

Fat Five Freddy told me everybody's side. DJ Spin and I said my flash is fat.

I know, I know it counts. I didn't know if you're talking about just regular day-to-day. I mean, fat five still is like. And I remember, you know what's funny on the NWA episode, at the time it was on, I remember he was wearing Vision Streetwear, like the button down. I was like, oh, it's dope. He's wearing like skate gear. You know what I mean? I remember because I, you know, I was still skating at that point, like pretty heavily, but also very much, you know, uh entrenched in hip-hop and stuff like that. So I was like, oh, it's really dope. Fat fight who Fat Fight Freddy, you know, I was like, from out the gate, I was like, this is just, you know, integral, you know, and I was like, oh, this is really cool. It's wearing vision and talking to easy eat, you know, on the flatbed. It was just dope, you know what I mean? So, well, yeah, Fat Fight Freddy for sure. You know, Kurt Loader is the man, you know what I mean? It's the man. I used to be. Kurt Loader's the man. I'm great, we're not a skippy.

I wanna No, I but I was at an event like uh you know, with Get On Down, we did something, you know, not something, they did the Wild Style thing with Kenny through Charlie, and there was an event where Fat Five Freddy was there, and there were moments where I was like, I just want to go over it and say, hey, really quick, you know, and it just never it kind of just never happened, you know what I mean? Um but no, I mean he would be, you know, I mean, you know, he you know, yeah, yeah.

Nas was performing Ilmatic, you know, in pool, and I just happened to be next to him and we were talking. But fast forward a couple years ago, you know, on my Ultra Mag 7 page, I do like the video. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He contacted me because he wanted me to do some editing work. Oh. But here's the crazy thing. So Bad Bob Freddie calls me on the phone. But he's so humble, he's trying to like pitch himself to me.

I said, I learned how to rap in French by listening to you Yeah, I mean, I mean, yeah, and it's like, you know, hearing it, and that was like, you know, probably you know, I was glued to MTV those early years, like the early 80s. My you know, my parents they were working, they were out a lot, so we would just be home. Yeah, you're seeing Blondie and she's name checking Fab Five Freddie, and that just sticks with you. So years later, he's hosting your show, you're like, this guy is the guy, you know what I mean? You know, because you know when I'm yeah, when I'm 11, 12 years old, especially in in the eight, you know, you don't really have context to find out who people really are. You know, you're finding out on your own, kind of. So I was like, Oh, this is the guy, you know, years ago. This mythical guy was in the blondie video now. Yeah, if yeah, that that's funny though. He's like calling here to be like, hey, I'm trying to do this thing.

I d I never really probably probably the the the the 12 inch both uh just probably but I love the album for that joke cock it sounds yeah it's like the joke cock I know that they cut it for like a second on the on the on the album you know what I mean but it's you know yeah yeah probably it's always cool to talk to ultra magnetic things oh yeah yeah yeah I mean that's you know I was you know the the four horsemen recently like that one I love those first two records I mean fuck your head up I I mean you know uh so good I don't you know what I mean I don't I feel like it's like uh uh critical you know the first one and four horsemen and people talk about the most yeah that record they can happen baby they can happen yeah they can happen yeah yeah yeah M2 champion all that's uh I love that record okay wow yeah so good good to good to connect with ultra friends yeah yeah always yeah so obviously you know you're from the the the New England area so question number six I want to ask you question number six if New England had a hip hop soundtrack what are three songs that might define that um three well you know RSO for sure would have to be you know first on there um we're notorious or you know call us the all probably call us the all um yeah RSL for sure call us you know all you know uh yeah one of those um call us the all we're notorious with two different records uh TDS mob absolutely TDS mob you know what I mean dope for the folks crushing them uh you know TDS scratch I mean they had two two singles that were uh just unbelievable like incredible incredible both sides incredible you know what I mean production incredible rapping it just you know I remember seeing the what's this world coming to record uh at like Tape World and like you know it was behind the counter and it just looked dope they had the Bruins gear on and yeah yeah so TDS Mob RSO um NOG for sure I gotta have it absolutely um you know but I you know definitely top choice click peace of mind would have to be it has to i mean I mean it's hard to do three you know because peace of mind was a huge record for me face it I've seen a lot of things from New York to Boston buddy with nothing like this um and I in a lot of you know it was a huge record I think at the time it came out not just for me but definitely top choice click uh like Orange Man who's you know down at RSO like you know he just had a voice and a style that you know he was yeah I mean you know unfortunately he's been you know uh incarcerated for a while but uh before he could even really you know kind of he just you know his album came out you know what I mean uh you know he was like you know arrested you know falsely arrested and stuff like that the the case is just you know it's uh it's very unfortunate but he was in a very unfortunate situation you know what I mean he can't really uh he was really dope you know what I mean and uh dope voice uh dope style I don't you know I I don't it just it was just different especially for them like the 80s or 88 it's just such a different you know what I mean but absolutely TDS mob RSO Edo for sure you know Top Choice Click like you know those are like the pillars you know what I mean because you know there's a lot of others too there's like this group the Rapmasters I used to they had a couple really dope songs careful my friend your claws are sharp sometimes you do not realize your own strength I didn't even know they were from Boston until like you know actually getting the record you know what I mean I just thought that sounded like you know I thought it was like New York you know what I mean they had a song called Backstabbers that was really dope.

You know what I mean? It works. Also kind of works you know usually I do that out of a reggae set or something. Some people get it and it works great some people don't but that would be one I think I've I've done you know years and years ago in a funny way would it would have been like Steve Wynwood's uh you know higher love or something like that. Then I think it is you know I don't know not but that's not something I would play no matter what.

Oh yeah yeah yeah I was telling like Eon that he's like oh man that's silly yeah oh yeah no for sure yeah yeah we saw Milo we uh we were out in um las Vegas la uh last year no the year before uh last year I think with I was out there with SO uh just for some recording not to to go to Vegas but um yeah we linked up with with my you know uh Milo and he was he was DJing at one of the clubs out there and and you know even through the years when I was again we I was Milo was out here in Boston when we were first um kind of getting out and junk you know you know because he went to he went to uh him and Ion as well I believe they both went to Boston College. Right. And Ion was and Milo was like very active in the clubs out here before he moved back to New York. So I remember you know countless nights going and you know hearing him play before we even like linked up but you know MCs things twice. Yeah I mean dude Milo's yeah they're the Milo's great news and uh yeah yeah we I mean you know the it they were here you know a couple years ago too like anytime they kind of come through town we always try to link up you know sort of roll through because you know what I mean I'm glad you know they're recording again too which is great.

wrap up let's talk about a couple things that you you got going on like what what's coming next from either just Seven L uh Seven L and Esoteric Zarface well we have a um we we we have a Zarface record coming uh this summer summer 2026 uh nailing down the release date as we speak but it's coming soon for sure uh it's wrapped up and we're working on a follow-up uh for hopefully later in the year so we're trying to get two out this year um and we're always working you know what I mean we uh you know Dex gonna be back on the road in the fall so you know we're getting some recording done now so we can kind of you know have some more material down the line like you know a little sooner you know what I mean um and you know hopefully another thing like another stress eater uh but you know on my side you know I have a record with Jazz soon that we you know it's coming pretty soon I don't know if much information is floated out about that but I'm excited about that and yeah I mean on the Czarface front we're always working well you know we're we're actively like I said get trying to get a couple things out this year and just kind of be a little more you know consistent with stuff you know what I mean to kind of get the ball rolling and with material you know it's just deck I mean he's he's been uh you know they've been very busy you know um for sure the last year you know with the retirement so to speak yeah they've been busier you know yeah so uh no but I mean it's you know obviously he's just kind of dunked in the rock and roll hall of fame I mean it's it's unbelievable um but yeah so his schedule has been just a little a little more busier than than normal with just shows and stuff like that because a lot of it is overseas now so it it it you know it's it's you know but we're we're getting yeah we're always working we're always working so you know there we're definitely excited for the new material we have so definitely this summer for sure you know well let me say this to you uh you as so you guys just you know like I said going I can go all the way back early records you know break records all this type of stuff so now constant just just being consistent whether it's reinventing things and this this czar face thing is like bro this is like everything you guys do with Zarface is what I love I'm like oh this is this is what I love this is for me yeah no and that's you know again that's that's you know who you make it for it's just you know like I I don't do many interviews either but I did one recently where I kind of it was you know talking about Zarface and I think in the beginning what it all the kind of avenues it's kind of turned into wasn't really this grand plan we were just like we just honest and it over time it's just we're trying to try stuff as it as it comes along you know what I mean so we we're just always doing things you know so well you know yeah yeah you guys are doing it well man like I'm telling you yeah yeah I'm trying so yeah hello yeah yeah so one more question before I I let you go yeah yeah I always love this and I want to know who came up with this idea the 7LES like set logo who said let's do that oh so for sure I believe I think it was so absolutely um yeah either it between him and uh Trevor Karma uh but yeah so I think for sure and it just worked you know what I mean you know we even yeah yeah because the front we even you know the front was even written in the same set with you know Sonic way and you know Sonic too is a huge group but if you can't say at all just say step for both of us you know um yes yeah in full gear it's just um but yeah it was definitely yeah so for sure I believe so yeah yeah always I always loved that I'm like yo these that's I'm like all right these guys that that these well that's what I think it's you know you'd be like if somebody catches on to what this is you know that they know what's up you know kind of what's going on so it's you
