dismissed. The Empty Nest Era.
dismissed. The Empty Nest Era is an upbeat, short-form bi-weekly podcast hosted by two moms navigating the empty‑nest years — and creating a space for other women to join the conversation. Jeni and Amy are former stay‑at‑home moms, dance moms, and good friends. In their 50s, they’re mothers to only daughters and married to the men they met in college. After years of pouring their energy into carpools, dance competitions, and epic birthday balloon walls, they’re finally turning the focus inward.
And now they’re asking:
"Oh crap—how do we do that?"
Let’s talk about it.

BONUS EPISODE: Dr. Responds to Our Nighttime Skin Routines

Bonus Episode! Monica Medrano, MD responds to our nighttime routines episode and offers her TWO, only two, non-negotiables for her nightly skin regimen.
Dr. Medrano proves that it doesn’t have to be complicated. Just look at her.
She told us to start with the basics and then build based on your skin goals. Not what’s trending. Not what your friend is using.
She recently simplified her own routine. She went from using six different products down to just two main ingredients: retinyl and hyaluronic acid — plus a good cleanser and a mild toner. That’s it. We found that so refreshing because we’re constantly being told we need more.
Big takeaway – Be consistent.
And as always, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out on social, send us an email, tell us what you’re using and what questions you want Dr. Medrano to answer next. 💬✨
Can’t wait for you to hear the full episode with Dr. Medrano next week. She is answering the top three questions listeners have had.

Welcome to Dismiss. I'm Jenny, and I'm talking from me and Amy. I am very excited to tell you that we are going to have Dr. Medrano, the vitality doctor, on next episode. She is going to answer the top three questions that viewers have had. We're very excited about that. And something really cool just happened too. She watched the um nighttime routines episode and sent in her advice. So I am going to drop that now. And then next Tuesday, we will drop the entire episode with her for Dr. Monica Madrano at Innovative Vitality. Here's what she had to say about nighttime routines. Enjoy! So now we've sat here and talked, Amy and I have talked about our nighttime routines. Now we're gonna talk to Dr. Madrano to find out what she would recommend or how she looks at people and recommends nighttime routines or taking care of your skin to her patients. So how do you figure that out?
SPEAKER_02Okay, so I so you're saying nighttime, so I'm gonna focus on nighttime because there is a day component that I'm a huge proponent of. Yes. Um there is really I think there are some very key basics that everyone should start with, and then you add according to your needs. I will tell you, and this actually goes to one of the other questions we're gonna talk about later. I have actually pared down my night routine significantly. I think I was putting on like six different products, I now do two. Retinol, a retinol specifically, because I have very sensitive skin. So retinol and hyaluron acid. That's it. So I do my cleanse, I do all that. I will say like a mild toner, that's just for cleaning processes. But my actual ingredients are a retinol, I can't like say retinol, not for me, and hyaluron acid. The end.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Every, every night.
SPEAKER_02In my case, yes. A retinol with a YL as opposed to O L at the end is actually um like a precursor, it's not as strong as a retinol, and so you can actually use that every night. With someone with the retinol, I do recommend kind of easing into that. Um, I do have uh sensitive skin. You can actually see a little bit of my rosacea coming out with the lights. But I just glowy. Thank you, thank you. Um, and so I can't tolerate a retinol. And that's so that's the other part to that. Um, everything else, it really depends on your goals. If someone's like, I have dry skin, I have oily skin, I want to achieve glow, I want to achieve smoother skin changes in texture. I'm like, let's go. I got you. Do you need an acid? Do you need something calming? Do you need this? Do you need that? I'm a huge proponent of Korean skincare, but also I will tell you, my nighttime um medication medications, my nighttime uh products are French. Okay. So I'm like, as long as it works, I don't care who makes it.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. How does that sit with you, Miss Nighttime Routine, Amy?
SPEAKER_00It sounds amazing because you remember that gel, that gel cream, that's Korean. Oh. And I have used uh-huh, and I've used the um French skincare too, and I love it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I'm not sure. Are you gonna use our actual products?
SPEAKER_00I have I mean we have, but uh yeah, we do in our nighttime between episodes.
SPEAKER_01She walks through every single thing she uses with a name, and so do I. I love it.
SPEAKER_00And here's the thing I've never saw, I have never seen a serum that I don't love. Like, I will I'll try it. I love that stuff. Get it, it makes my skin feel so good.
SPEAKER_01I get it. Um okay, so those are the two things you would recommend at night, no matter what. Absolutely, across the board for everybody, across the board, specifically for women like 50s. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00And I will say that retinol, the retinol, I I can only use it every other night. Like I can't use it every day. So and I can only use a little bit. I've never heard of the other thing that you said, retinil, retinol.
SPEAKER_02Retinil, yes. So that's retinol. Yeah, and this is where the customization comes into place. Did you know that there are a variety of retinols in a variety of strengths?
SPEAKER_00No, I just knew that it was there was a retinol. Retinol. And you should use it.
SPEAKER_02So, for someone, for example, if you have more sensitive skin and you're like, I can only do it every other night, but you want to go to a nightly, uh, one of my favorites is a dappling gel. Do you remember that for acne? I do. That was back in the day called uh adapoline gel that is now available in the lowest strength over the counter. And guess what? Also a retinol, but is the weakest of the retinals. Wow. Okay, okay. So, right. So you're just like a retinol. Too strong to do every every other or every day. I would like to do something, or maybe a bridge to it. Easy peasy. They say acne, wow, just for acne.
SPEAKER_00Is it bad to do it every other day? Are you a lot more steady?
SPEAKER_02No, no, no, not at all. It's just a matter of being able to stick to it as humans. We're better at habits that we do daily. Oh, yeah. Um for sure. You know, and so it's really easy to be like, crap, did I do it tonight? Did I do it last night? I don't remember. You know what I mean? And so daily is just a little easier to to stick with. No, what you're doing is perfect. I think it's great.
SPEAKER_00Okay, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_01Doctor approved Amy, and I just stepped it up. She j I just added those two things. I've been doing it graciously since we talked. I ordered Amy's uh Medicube.
unknownI don't remember.
SPEAKER_00Medicue, yes.
SPEAKER_01So I started, I've been doing it. I think it's only been three nights so far. So I'll let you guys know. I love the medicube eventually. Awesome. Awesome.
