Welcome to the Healing Waves Reiki Podcast. I'm your host, Kathy Scarpito, Reiki Master teacher, spiritual mentor, intuitive, and physical therapist. This is a grounded, heart-centered space where we explore Reiki and the science and spirit of healing. How Reiki supports the body, deepens intuition, regulates the nervous system, and helps transform the experience of healing. Where Reiki meets science, intuition meets practice, and healing becomes more human. If you're curious about Reiki, drawn to deeper healing, or seeking a more connective and intuitive way to care for yourself or others, you're in the right place. Let's begin. Energy protection. We spend so much of our lives protecting our physical body. We lock our doors. We wear seat belts. We use umbrellas when it rains. We live in homes that protect us from the elements. We use sunscreen. We eat healthy foods, we take vitamins, we wash our hands, we use skin creams. And at one point, many of us even wore masks. So much of modern life is built around protecting the body from harm. But on this podcast, we've been exploring the idea that we are more than just physical beings. Yes, we have muscles and bones and nerves and organs, but we also have emotion, presence, intuition, energy. And whether we fully understand it or not, most of us have felt the impact of another person's energy before. You walk into a room and immediately sense tension or peace. You leave a conversation feeling lighter or completely exhausted. You meet someone and instantly feel calm around them or uneasy without knowing why. We feel each other. And if that's true, if we are constantly affected by the energy around us, then maybe we should be protecting our energetic well-being the same way we protect our physical body. Our energetic field, sometimes called the biofield or auric field, extends beyond the physical body. And the more sensitive you are, the more you tend to feel the energy around you. I want you to think about this honestly. Are you someone who can immediately sense the energy in a room? Can you feel what other people are feeling? Do people naturally come to you for advice, comfort, or emotional support? Do crowds overwhelm you? Do you sometimes feel anxious and not even know why? If you answered yes to any of these, there's a good chance you are especially sensitive to energy, and this episode is for you. Maybe you work closely with people. Maybe you're in healthcare, teaching, counseling, massage, physical therapy, hospice, caregiving. Maybe your work requires you to constantly be around stress, pain, grief, tension, fear, or overwhelm. This episode is for you too. If you are someone people come to in order to vent, I'm sure they leave feeling better afterward. But how do you feel after? Exhausted, heavy, emotionally wiped out? Do you ever see someone's name pop up on your phone and think I just don't have it in me right now? You are not selfish, and you are not a bad person. You are recognizing energy depletion. There are times in life when we simply cannot avoid draining environments or emotionally heavy people. Maybe they are co-workers, family members, patients, friends. So instead of trying to avoid all difficult energy, we can learn how to protect our own. And before we talk about how to do that, I want to briefly bring some science into this conversation. There's a concept called entrainment. In simple terms, entrainment describes how one rhythm begins to synchronize with another. We see this in nature all the time. Pendulums eventually swing together. Groups breathing together begin matching rhythms. Nervous systems corregulate with one another. Even heart rhythms can synchronize. Humans influence each other constantly. A calm, regulated person can help settle an anxious room, and a highly stressed or emotionally dysregulated environment can absolutely affect the people inside it. This is one of the ideas explored in Why Woo Woo Works, that many experiences we dismiss as woo woo may actually have biological and energetic explanations underneath them. Think about a time when you were in a really good mood. Maybe you felt peaceful, energized, hopeful. Then you sat next to someone complaining, angry, negative, or emotionally heavy. And suddenly your mood shifted. Your energy crashed. Maybe you didn't even understand why. The more empathic and sensitive you are, the more deeply you tend to absorb the emotional state of the people around you. Which is exactly why energy protection matters. And the beautiful thing is it doesn't have to be complicated. I like simple. One of my favorite practices is something I learned from one of my spiritual mentors, Pat Longo. It's called surround, ground, and shield. Simple, quick, powerful. So let's walk through it together. First, surround. Close your eyes if you can and take a slow breath in. Imagine yourself surrounded by beautiful white light. A bubble of white light of divine protection. A light of peace, a light of love, a light of protection. See it completely surrounding your body. Above you, below you, in front of you, behind you. Second, ground. Imagine roots growing from the bottom of each foot and your tailbone anchoring you deep into the earth. Anchoring you, steadying you, connecting you. When we are ungrounded, we absorb everything around us. When we are grounded, we stay connected to ourselves. And finally, shield. Imagine yourself placing on a shield of armor protecting your heart and your solar plexus right at the top of your stomach. The shield protects you from absorbing negative energy, lower vibrational energy while still allowing love, peace, and positive energy into your energy field. That's it. Very simply. Picture yourself surrounded in a bubble of white light of divine protection. Ground yourself by imagining roots coming from the bottom of your feet and your tailbone, anchoring you to the earth, and place a shield of armor covering your heart and your solar plexus. You can do this before work, before entering a hospital or clinic, before difficult conversations, before family gatherings, before opening social media. There are other tools too. Some people use sage sticks or sage spray, some use prayer, some meditate, some visualize white light, some spend time in nature, some use breath work. The specific method matters less than the intention behind it, because intention directs energy, and protecting your energy is not selfish, especially if you are someone who spends your life caring for others. You cannot constantly pour from an empty cup. The goal is not to become closed off from people. The goal is to remain open hearted without becoming energetically overwhelmed, to stay compassionate without carrying everyone else's pain inside your own body. Maybe this is something we should have been taught all along. We teach physical hygiene, but not energetic hygiene, and yet so many people are walking through life absorbing stress, fear, grief, anger, tension, and emotional heaviness without ever clearing it. So today I simply want to invite you to begin noticing. Notice which people leave you feeling peaceful. Notice which environments drain you. Notice when your body asks for quiet, grounding, or rest. Your sensitivity is not weakness. In many ways, it is a gift. It simply means you need practices that help you stay centered within it. I hope you check out my bonus meditations, my grounding meditation to help you ground, protect, and fill yourself with energy, and my shower meditation, designed to help you cleanse and release all the energy that you've picked up.
