SpeakerHi there, it's Elaine Schardien, and I'm coming to you with another technique that can activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This is a humming technique that I use a lot personally and in my professional life. When you hum, that vibration stimulates the vagus nerve and it can lower the heart rate, reduce stress, and signal to the brain that you are safe. I love this technique, and it is a technique that seems to be effective for a number of people. To begin, place your feet flat on the ground, sit up as straight as you possibly can. Bring the shoulders up to the ears and just let them drop. This technique requires that you place your thumb under the chin, hitting that soft spot and just pressing in gently. Closing the lips but not the teeth. And when you inhale, you'll expand the diaphragm. And when you exhale, you are going to squeeze all the air out. While you are doing this, your exhalation is going to be a hum. So let's see if you can visualize this. I'm going to inhale. My thumb is under the soft part, the under my chin. I'm going to inhale and exhale and I'll hum. Until my breath is out. Now I want you to practice along with me, and we will do this for three breaths. So again, check your posture. Place the thumb underneath the soft part of the chin. Close the lips, teeth not touching. Inhale, expand the diaphragm. Andhale. Inhale. When you begin this technique, and seem very playful, lighthearted. And it is. Hopefully, when you complete it, maybe four or five breaths, you will feel more grounded and regulate it. I think you will find that if you continue to practice this, your increase.
