The Real Reasons People Come to Reiki (And It's Not What You Think)

When most people think about Reiki, they often imagine energy healing, spirituality, or a mystical experience.

But in my experience as both a physical therapist and Reiki practitioner, that's usually not what brings people through the door.

Most people come because they want to feel better.

They're stressed.
They're anxious.
They're overwhelmed.
They're grieving.
They're exhausted.
They're feeling stuck.

In this episode of Healing Waves Reiki, we explore the real-life reasons people seek Reiki sessions and why so many people are looking for support in today's fast-paced world.

We'll discuss stress, anxiety, burnout, grief, emotional overwhelm, chronic health challenges, personal growth, and the desire to feel more balanced and connected.

We'll also explore how Reiki can support relaxation, emotional well-being, nervous system regulation, self-awareness, and the body's natural restorative processes.

Whether you're new to Reiki, considering your first session, or simply curious about how Reiki supports healing and wellness, this episode offers an honest and grounded look at what brings people to the Reiki table—and what they often discover along the way.

In this episode:
• Stress and overwhelm
• Anxiety and nervous system regulation
• Feeling stuck and seeking clarity
• Grief, loss, and life transitions
• Burnout and emotional exhaustion
• Reiki and chronic health challenges
• Personal growth and self-discovery
• Reiki as part of a wellness routine

Thank you for listening to Healing Waves Reiki.

Take care of yourself, and remember—you don't have to carry everything alone.

Speaker

Welcome to the Healing Waves Reiki Podcast. I'm your host, Cathy Scarpitto, Reiki Master teacher, spiritual mentor, intuitive, and physical therapist. This is a grounded, heart-centered space where we explore Reiki energy and the science and spirit of healing. How Reiki supports the body, deepens intuition, regulates the nervous system, and helps transform the experience of healing. Where Reiki meets science, intuition meets practice, and healing becomes more human. If you're curious about Reiki, drawn to deeper healing, or seeking a more connective and intuitive way to care for yourself or others, you're in the right place. Let's begin. Today I'd like to talk about a question I get quite often. Why do people come for a Reiki session? You might think the answer is for energy healing or for a spiritual experience. And while that may be true for some, in my practice, that's usually not what brings most people through the door. Most people simply want to feel better. They want to feel more relaxed, more balanced, more connected to themselves, more focused, more clear, and more at peace. Many people come because something just feels off. What's interesting is that what people think a Reiki session is going to be and what they actually experience can be quite different. Some people have had Reiki before, others know very little about it. Some have read books or listened to podcasts, and others come in with no expectations at all. But regardless of their background, most arrive because of an inner desire for something to shift. They know they don't feel quite like themselves, and they're looking for support. Many people expect Reiki to be a passive experience. They imagine lying comfortably on a treatment table, perhaps feeling warmth, tingling, relaxation, or a sense of peace. And while those experiences can certainly happen, what often surprises people is the deeper connection they feel to themselves. Some people gain clarity. Sometimes they become aware of emotions they've been carrying. Sometimes old experiences or patterns rise into awareness, not to be analyzed or relived, but simply to be acknowledged and released. Many people leave feeling as though they've reconnected with a part of themselves that had gotten lost beneath the stress and busyness of everyday life. That intuitive aspect of Reiki is often one of the biggest surprises. As Reiki practitioners often say, Reiki works for the highest and greatest good of the person receiving it. And the truth is, we don't always know exactly what we need in a given moment. Yet many people find that the experience gives them exactly what they need. Whether that's rest, clarity, perspective, peace, or simply the feeling of being supported. So what brings people to Reiki in the first place? When I sit down with a client, one of the first questions I ask is very simple. What brings you here today? It's a simple question. And over the years I've noticed some very common themes in the answers. People come from different backgrounds. They have different stories, different experiences, and different challenges. But despite all of those differences, many are struggling with the same very human experiences. They're stressed, they're anxious, they're overwhelmed, they're grieving, they're exhausted, they're feeling stuck, and they're looking for relief. I'd like to share some of those common reasons with you today, because as you're listening, you may find yourself relating to more of them than you might expect. You may even hear your own story somewhere in this conversation. So in no particular order and simply from my experience, here are some of the most common reasons people come for a Reiki session. The first and probably one of the most common reasons people see Reiki is stress. Life moves fast. Many of us are constantly juggling work, family responsibilities, caregiving, finances, and an endless stream of information and demands. For some people, a Reiki session becomes the first opportunity they've given themselves to simply slow down and receive support. The first opportunity to pause, to stop doing, to stop carrying everything for everyone else. From both my physical therapy and Reiki experience, I often see people living in a constantly activated state. What we might think of as a sympathetic fight or flight response. The body was never designed to stay there all the time. Reiki can provide a supportive environment where the body and nervous system have an opportunity to settle, soften, and remember what relaxation feels like. Another common reason people seek Reiki is anxiety. Many clients describe feeling like their minds never stop. They're constantly thinking, planning, worrying, analyzing, and anticipating what's next. Even when they're physically resting, their nervous systems don't seem to know how to relax. A Reiki session often creates a space where the body can begin to shift out of that constant state of alertness. Something else I've noticed in my practice is that many people who experience anxiety are also highly sensitive individuals. They're deeply aware of the emotions, moods, and energy of the people around them. They're often the caregivers, the helpers, the listeners, and the people everyone turns to for support. And sometimes, without realizing it, they spend so much time holding space for others that they lose touch with their own needs. Now I'm not saying that all anxiety comes from energy sensitivity. Anxiety is complex and can have many causes. But for some people, learning how to recognize what belongs to them and what doesn't can be incredibly helpful. One of my dear friends and spiritual mentors, Pat Longo, talks beautifully about this in her book, The Gifts Beneath Your Anxiety. She offers practical tools and perspectives that help people understand their sensitivity, protect their energy, and navigate anxiety in a more empowered way. And for many people, Reiki becomes one of those supportive tools as well. People also come because they feel stuck. Sometimes nothing is technically wrong, but they feel disconnected from themselves. They know something needs to change, but they aren't sure what that change is. They're seeking clarity, direction, or simply a deeper connection with their own inner wisdom. We live in a world that constantly asks us to think, analyze, plan, and solve problems. But sometimes the answers we're searching for aren't found by thinking harder. Sometimes they emerge when we become still enough to listen. By quieting the constant chatter of the monkey mind, Reiki can help create space for people to reconnect with themselves. Often, clients leave with a greater sense of clarity, direction, confidence, or simply a deeper trust in themselves. The answer may not always arrive immediately, but many people walk away feeling more connected to what they already knew deep down. Grief is another reason many people seek Reiki. Whether they've lost a loved one, experienced a major life change, gone through a divorce, or are navigating a difficult transition, grief affects the body, mind, and spirit. Reiki doesn't take grief away, nor should it. Grief is a natural expression of love, but Reiki can create a gentle space where healing, processing, and acceptance can begin. Sometimes healing doesn't happen in giant leaps. Sometimes it's a 1% shift, a small softening, a deeper breath, a moment of peace in the midst of pain. And sometimes that small shift is enough to get things started. I've also found that grief can be incredibly heavy. People often carry sadness, guilt, regret, fear, or unresolved emotions that can feel overwhelming. As those emotions are acknowledged and gently released, many people experience a greater sense of peace, love, and connection. For some, that connection is with themselves. For others, it's with the memory of a loved one. And for still others, it's a renewed sense that love remains present even after loss. While grief never asks us to stop loving those we've lost, it can invite us to carry that love in a different way. And Reiki can be a supportive companion in that process. Many people also come because they're exhausted, not just physically tired, but emotionally tired. The kind of fatigue that comes from carrying too much for too long. Caregivers, healthcare professionals, parents, and people who spend much of their lives supporting others often find themselves depleted. Reiki offers an opportunity to refill their own cup. Some people also come to Reiki as a supportive complement to physical health challenges or chronic illness, alongside their medical care as a way to encourage relaxation and overall well-being in the body. By supporting the parasympathetic nervous system, Reiki can help the body shift into a more relaxed state, one that supports rest, regulation, and the body's natural restorative processes. Others are drawn to Reiki during periods of personal growth when they're seeking a deeper sense of meaning, connection, or understanding of themselves and their lives. And then there are those who come simply because they want to feel more balanced. Nothing is necessarily wrong. They're interested in self-care, personal growth, mindfulness, or maintaining their overall well-being. Just as people exercise, meditate, or receive massage therapy to support their health, Reiki can become a part of a wellness routine. What's interesting is that while people arrive for many different reasons, they often leave describing something similar. They feel calmer, more grounded, more present, more connected to themselves. And perhaps that's one of the greatest gifts Reiki offers, not fixing, not forcing, not changing who we are, but creating space to reconnect with the part of ourselves that can get lost beneath the noise, stress, and demands of everyday life. If you're listening and recognize yourself in any of these experiences, stress, anxiety, burnout, grief, feeling stuck, or simply needing space to breathe, know that you're not alone. These are deeply human experiences. And sometimes healing doesn't begin by doing more. It begins by creating space to simply be. Thank you for joining me on the Healing Waves Reiki Podcast.
