It's a very common assumption, but we have to look at what actually happens to the data packet between Amara and her mom. Okay. A video call is an exercise in extreme sensory compression. The audio you hear on a Zoom call is not the actual acoustic wave of a human voice. It's not. No. It is a digitized, compressed, and equalized simulation of a voice completely stripped of its deepest resonances just to save bandwidth over a network.

It is. It also notices that the eye contact is completely artificial. Because if you are looking at their face on the screen, you are not looking at the camera lens, meaning true intersecting eye contact is geometrically impossible.

Never. Your body is trying to read the microscopic facial twitches and pupillary dilations of the person on the screen, but the frame rate and the pixels are insufficient.

That's an excellent way to conceptualize it. When you sit in a room with a friend you trust, you don't even have to speak. Your vagus nerve is constantly assessing their biological state.

Just by being near them.

Right. It reads the rhythm of their breathing, it reads the microtension and the muscles around their eyes. It registers the pitch of their ambient vocalizations.

And what happens if they are relaxed?

If their biology is signaling calm and safe, your vagus nerve interprets that data and immediately commands your own heart rate to slow down. It commands your digestion to optimize. It commands your stress hormones to recede.
