Stress physically changes how your heart operates. It's not just an invisible feeling. There are five signs stress is already affecting your heart. By the end of this video, you'll know what they are and what you can do to lower your risk of a heart attack today. First, your resting heart rate creeping up over time, not racing, just a little higher than it used to be, even sitting still, doing nothing. Here's why that happens. Your nervous system has two main settings. One is fight or flight, the gas pedal, the one that gets your body ready to react to danger. The other is rest and digest, the break, the one that lets your body actually recover. Under chronic stress, your body gets stuck leaning on the gas pedal, even when nothing is actually happening. Your body can't tell the difference between a stressful email and an actual emergency. It reacts to both the exact same way, which means that the gas pedal is getting pressed far more often than it was ever designed for. And the way doctors actually measure how well your body can shift between those two settings is something called heart rate variability or HRV. Heart rate variability means your nervous system can flex easily between alert and calm. Lower variability means it's stuck, running hotter than it should, even at rest. A resting heart rate that's prepped up over time is often the most visible sign that this shift is already happening. Most phones and watches now can track both resting heart rate and HRV, again, heart rate variability now. And the trend over months matters way more than just one single day. If it's been climbing or your HRB has been dropping, that's worth taking seriously. So if your watch can track this, why isn't your cardiologist asking about it? Why isn't anyone telling you to even look? Honestly, because a standard physical is built around a checklist with real protocols attached to it. If your cholesterol is high, there's a medication and a follow-up plan. If your blood pressure is high, same thing. But there's no equivalent protocol for stress. Not because your doctor doesn't believe you, because they don't know how to help you. What are there options in a 15-minute appointment? Write you a prescription for an anti-anxiety drug, refer you to a therapist, you'll wait two months to see. So even on the rare occasion, your stress levels do come up, the conversation has nowhere real to go. But just because your cardiologist isn't tracking something doesn't mean it isn't doing damage. Think of the accumulation of stress like a slow leak in a tire. You can't see the air going out. There's no light flashing on your dashboard telling you, but that tire is going flat anyway, a little more every single day. Stress works on your arteries the same way. Easy to wave off, completely real inside your body. Second, your blood pressure doesn't match your lifestyle. You're eating reasonably well, you're moving your body, and your numbers are still higher than they should be. Here's where I think a lot of health conscious people get tripped up. You probably already exercise, and exercise does lower stress. That part's true. But it lowers it for a few hours. A good workout drops your stress hormones temporarily, and then your body goes right back to wherever baseline it was running before you laced up your shoes. And here's a mechanism behind why that baseline stays high. That same gas pedal nervous system response doesn't just speed up your heart. It actually can narrow your blood vessels and cause constriction because your body thinks it needs a direct blood flow towards your muscles to either fight or run. Narrower vessels means your heart has to push harder to move the same amount of blood through them. That's a direct physical increase in blood pressure, happening for reasons that have nothing to do with your diet or your weight. If that baseline has been elevated for years because of a job, a relationship, a sleep deficit, a caregiving situation that has never let up, your workout isn't touching that. It's giving you a few good hours inside a problem that's still running in the background, the other 22. That's exactly why someone can be doing the right thing physically and still be at risk. Track your blood pressure outside the doctor's office too. Relying only on the reading taken at the doctor's office isn't enough. I had a patient who had been to the emergency room multiple times with severe spikes in blood pressure. She'd been started on several medications, which helped, but they never really addressed the route and why it kept happening. As we worked together, we realized chronic stress was a major driver. We built a plan that included breathing exercises, meditation, a gratitude practice, and learning to recognize and respond differently to her stress triggers. I told her to treat those techniques like a prescription, something she practiced several times a day, not just when she felt overwhelmed. Over time, her blood pressure became much more stable. She went from needing three different blood pressure medications to just one low-dose medication. It wasn't because she stopped her medication, it was because we finally started treating one of the things that was contributing to the problem in the first place. Third, you're tired but wired, exhausted, but you can't actually fall asleep. Or you wake up at 2 or 3 in the morning with your mind racing for no reason. Here's what's actually happening. Your body releases a hormone called cortisol when you're stressed. In small doses, for short bursts, that's actually useful. It's a thing that helped your ancestors outrun a predator and then calm back down once a danger passed. It's supposed to taper off at night so your body can power down. But when stress never really lets up, cortisol doesn't get that memo. It just stays elevated for months, sometimes years. You can think of it like a smoke alarm. A working smoke alarm is a good thing. It goes off when there's an actual fire. It does its job and then it stops. But imagine the smoke alarm that's stuck. It just keeps blaring day after day, whether there's smoke in the house or not. That's chronic cortisol. It's exactly why you can be wiped out and wide awake at the same time. And by the way, cortisol can be measured. There are blood and saliva tests for it, but a single draw only catches one moment. Since cortisol naturally swings up and down all day on its own. So even when it's tested, almost nobody's looking at the actual pattern. Protect your wind-down hour like it's an actual appointment, because for your heart, it kind of is. Fourth, your inflammation markers come back high and nobody's really explained why. If you've ever had your high sensitivity CRP checked and it was elevated with no obvious cause, stress is one of the most overlooked reasons for that. That same stuck alarm, the elevated cortisol, drives inflammation everywhere in your body because your immune system thinks it's still on high alert. Over time, that inflammation damages your endothelium, which is a smooth lining inside your artery walls. Once that lining gets damaged, that's exactly the kind of environment plaque loves to start forming in. Don't let an elevated marker get filed away as unexplained. Ask if stress was ever part of that conversation. Fifth, you're exhausted in a way your activity level doesn't explain. Not the normal tired after a long day, the kind that doesn't lift no matter how much you sleep. Chronic stress drains the system. Your body needs to actually recover, not just rest. And if that alarm never shuts off, eventually it wears down everything around it, including you. Treat that kind of fatigue as a real symptom worth bringing up, not just a personality trait you've learned to live with. For years, stress got filed under general advice, something to manage if you have energy left after everything else. But that's not how it should be. Stress raises blood pressure directly, it drives inflammation directly, it damages the lining of your arteries directly. That makes it a real physical risk factor, not an afterthought. And conventional cardiology is limited in what they can do here. This is why I switched to holistic and preventive cardiology so I can help my patients do everything we know to improve their heart health. Over the years, I've seen so many patients underestimate what chronic stress can do. They think of it as something that affects their mood, when in reality, it has very real physical effects on the heart and blood vessels. It can raise blood pressure, increase inflammation, reduce heart rate variability, and create an environment that promotes plaque development over time.
