God coming down and yokes.

Welcome to the second episode of There's No Way. This is a working title, and as always, we are very open to suggestions. We'll leave uh this week the readings will be for uh proper 9, July 5th, if I'm not mistaken. But uh, anyways, my name is Lance, and again, don't worry, I'm not doing this alone. Two feet to my left is my best friend and my only wife and the whole wide world cat. How are you doing?

Okay. So what are the readings for this week?

Well, um, the readings are there's a bunch of them. There are a bunch, but um my particular church this week, um, celebration of grace Lutheran in Canton, Georgia. Woo, um, we are doing Zechariah, uh, chapter 9, Psalm 145, Romans, and Matthew. So I'm doing Genesis. Yeah, I think your preparation and my preparation are a wee bit different, but that's okay.

Alright. So before we get started, just a quick rundown. So, of course, next we'll discuss the scripture, or Kat will read the scripture, then we'll discuss it. Uh we'll take a quick break after that, then when we'll come back, we'll recap what we discussed. Kat will go over a few uh talking points potentially, then we'll hit any relevant commemorations, people, places, events, things like that that are relevant for this week. Uh, and then we'll wrap it up with any closing. So with that.

The first reading is going to be Zechariah chapter 9, verses 9 through 12, and all of these readings will be from the NRSBUE. Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion. Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem. See, your king comes to you, triumphant and victorious is he, humble, riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the river to the ends of the earth. As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope. Today I declare that I will restore you double. So that is Zechariah, and then the second reading is Psalm 145, verses eight through fifteen. And that goes like this, and may sound familiar. The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made. All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord, and your faithful shall bless you. They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom and tell of your power, to make known to all people your mighty deeds, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. The Lord is faithful in all his words and gracious in all his deeds. The Lord upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season. And then next up is Romans, and it's a bit of a tongue twister, and a little on the repetitive side, and it goes something along the lines of this. I do not understand my own actions, for I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now, if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I who do it, but the sin that dwells in within me. For I know that the good does not dwell within me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do good lies close at hand, but not the ability. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that, when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of the Lord in my inmost self, but I see my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched person I am, who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with my mind I am enslaved to the law of God, but with my flesh I am enslaved to the law of sin. And then finally we have the gospel reading, and that's from Matthew chapter eleven. And it's gonna go something like this. But to what will I compare this generation? It's like children sitting in the marketplaces calling to one another. We played the flute for you, and you did not dance. We wailed, and you did not mourn. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon. The son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners. Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds. And then it skips down to the end, and it says, At that time Jesus said, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son, and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Well, we can we can go into that. I believe you had some questions.

Maybe some questions, maybe some statements. So Zechariah. It's one of the books.

Yeah, Zachariah.

Not to be confused with Zechariah.

Yeah, Zechariah. One of the prophets. This is talking about I mean, it's to me, it's fairly evident that okay, this is talking about the coming of the Messiah.

Mm-hmm.

He's foretelling that, yay, this will happen in the future. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

But it also echoes some of the inversion that we always see in the gospel.

What do you mean by inversion?

SPEAKER_02

Inversion. So you have a king coming down to see you, but they're arriving on a donkey. So you're expecting riches and chariots, and what you're getting is something very different. So that's that's also.

Oh, my king coming in.

SPEAKER_02

On a G6?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. You know, with a G6, you know, with the big Philharmonic Orchestra behind him, you know, playing, I don't know, the uh, what is it, Ride of the Valkyrie? Sure. You know, coming in. Something from Wagner. That was always big and bold, you know, just coming in like that.

That one is Flight of the Valkyrie, that's Kill the Wabbit, right?

Yeah. Yeah, Kill the Wabbit. Yeah, okay. Yeah.

Okay.

It's uh yeah. Anyway. We digress. Okay. So there's that. Okay, you're the king, you know, king the king of the chosen people will be coming, but he's not but he's not going to look he's not gonna look like what you think he's gonna look like.

Yeah.

Why is that? I mean, I know it's just the prophet, you know, telling, you know, saying what he uh what he sees, if you will. Um but why is that relevant?

SPEAKER_02

Well, that's exactly what Jesus does. I mean, you know, Jesus being who he is comes as a baby. And so they were expecting this warrior and what they get as an infant. And so it's kind of setting up this.

I mean, I'm expecting someone like King David. You know, someone who's not, you know, a mighty warrior king.

SPEAKER_02

Well and it's not. Nope.

SPEAKER_00

Coming in riding an ass. There's a joke in there somewhere. No, there is. Yeah. Okay. So then we get to the Romans reading.

The Psalm.

SPEAKER_00

The Psalm. Oh, I skipped Psalms.

SPEAKER_02

So it talks about basically the glory of the Lord, and interestingly enough, we have a Lord that upholds those who are falling. And you don't normally think of a king supporting people who are struggling, but this king does. God does.

Well, I mean, that's what the king's minions do, is they well, this time the king's doing it. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

And then we get to Romans.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so then in Romans. So this is Paul in a very confusing way. Oh, so I'll put it like this. What I took out of this is the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Yes, that is that. And I even think um St. Augustine echoes some of this stuff. Like, I do the things I don't want to do, and I don't do the things I want to do. And um pick to what?

Well, you know, I do some of the things I want to do, and I don't do some of the things I want to do, and you know, hey, everybody just goes along and it's it's all good. This is extremely maybe in the Greek it makes sense, I'll admit. I don't know a word of Greek.

I did read one explanation of it from the South Asian Bible uh commentary and just looked at the fact that you tend to not run into any problems until you start establishing laws, and then the desire to break them or the ability to break them suddenly comes on the scene when it wasn't there before. And I'm like, oh, that's that makes sense. And now that you have rules, you're looking for people to break them, you break them yourself. That makes sense.

What does he mean by law of my mind?

Law of my mind. I personally think that since 723. Yeah, I remember seeing that.

Um your own will.

SPEAKER_02

Like your mind will.

Okay. Yeah, this uh it's I'll put it this way. I had to read this one two or three times before still not sure. Not a hundred percent on my grasp of it, if you will.

Right.

It's uh but it's basically just Paul saying the spirit is willing, but the you know the flesh is weak.

Basically. It would have been a lot easier to say that, that's for sure.

Well, you know, I'll tell you what, we'll see what we can do to get the uh various churches to you know update with with our translation.

Your translation. Don't bring me in as you have some questions about um serving the law of God versus being enslaved to the law of God?

SPEAKER_00

Well, yeah, so because the so the RSVCE, so revised Standard Version Catholic edition, in Romans 7.25 uses the phrase serve the law of God. Whereas the new Revised Standard Version updated edition uses the phrase enslaved to the law of God. To me, those are two very those mean something very different.

Can't they both be true?

No, no, they can't.

Okay, so the Greek.

Um I'm assuming it has to do with the translation from the Greek and yeah, it's okay.

So the word of the day is dole.

And Ooh, I it didn't on our honeymoon in Hawaii, didn't we have something with that isn't that what we had for an appetizer one night?

No, no.

SPEAKER_00

That must be remembering something else.

Not even close. Um although it does kind of have that. Yeah, anyway, um, dole u-o. Okay, now I'm getting them all confused. Um if you're familiar with a doula, like a birth doula or death doula, that is a servant of the pregnant lady, basically, or someone who helps usher in a baby, someone who helps usher in death.

Um, and so it was originally going way back when that that person was a was a servant to the pregnant woman. Um and one of their primary functions there was to ease the birth.

Also, um, handmade, that word also comes from this word.

Okay.

Um, so having said that.

Boy, that's a leap. I'm a weep, I'm dying to hear how this happened.

That what do you mean?

I mean it's just how does handmaid come from it?

Uh please hold and I will tell you. Uh-da. Let's see if we can find that. That was in Romans chapter seven.

Um so the magic word is enslaved. And so that's gonna do do lay is a female slave or handmaid. Do lay u is to be a slave, to be in bondage, to serve. Doulon is a servant. Dulos is a slave. So it's it's all from that.

Um so I guess it's a matter then of, alright, so what does what is it? The coin Greek, I believe is the common Greek that it was written in, what does that say?

Um it is saying um to be a slave, to be in bondage, to do service. Okay. So that's so you can kind of see enslaved, you can you can see servant if you just don't want to say the word slave.

So why are the Lutherans trying to reinforce the idea of enslavement?

SPEAKER_02

Don't don't do this. Not it's too late for that. It's not not. I I have not had enough rest to deal with that right now. Don't mm mm.

All right, we'll move on to Matthew then. Please do.

So who is Jesus talking to in this? Matthew 11, 16 to 19, 25 to 30.

You know, that is something I did not look up. I'm assuming he is either talking to people around or talking once again to his disciples. Um, I'm only saying that because he has already referred to them as little ones before, so maybe he's referring to them again.

Um, John the Baptist in there.

SPEAKER_02

Um, no, he's talking to he's teaching people, he's teaching to crowds. Okay. Just random people.

The masses?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. So 1119, Matthew 11.19. Let's see here. Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners. I find that very interesting that that's how he refers. Yeah, that that's the example he used. Because again, I'm no theologian, but I believe one of his disciples was a tax collector. Oh, yeah. And they were all sinners.

Mm-hmm.

By definition, maybe.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So tax collector is like its own set of evil.

SPEAKER_00

So then I assume that it's in a later chapter or maybe book when he says that we have to cast these same people aside into the trash heap. Is that right? Am I misreading something?

SPEAKER_02

Uh possibly. You were in rare form today. What are you talking about?

SPEAKER_00

And then so in 1127 he referred to himself as God's son.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Is that the first time he's done so? Or has he done it in it earlier?

SPEAKER_02

It's uh I believe he did that in the transfiguration, but this is as distinct as it was during the transfiguration. Like this is a very significant set of things being said by Jesus in this particular area.

Okay. So he's speaking to the masses.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

What is he saying? What does this mean?

SPEAKER_02

It's okay, so what I've kind of gathered from this is that um you've got people that think they know everything, and they they they think they're wise, yet they are the least wise. If they were wise, they would know who this person was. They would know why he says the things he says. They would know that you know he tax collectors and other sinners wasn't what they made it out to be. And instead, he's saying the wise, the true wise ones here are these little children, um, these humble people who are open to the word of God. And these are the people that are going to know my father because they know me. And then in 28 through 30, which is the take my yoke, my yoke is easy, burden is light. And after kind of digesting this and reading a few other commentaries and looking at Romans, you've got all these laws that you're supposed to follow. And as we well, I'll say as we all know, as as most people who have studied the Bible know that you you just can't follow all the laws by yourself.

All of which laws?

All of them in the Bible. Um oddly enough, I was I was looking at an episode of Living Biblically, and that was taken, it was insp inspired from the book A Year of Living Biblically, and it was a guy who tried to follow every single rule in the Bible, and it became extremely socially awkward, and he realized he couldn't do it, which is the whole point. And so when Jesus is saying this, I think that he is taking into consideration that you know you have all these rules and they're not really giving you life that's actually causing death. You know, you're trying to follow these rules, but you can't, and you're failing, and and that's putting you in such a way. And you know, the first thing I thought of is like, you know, you make a to do list and you try to accomplish That but you don't get them done, and you feel terrible about yourself, and you think that well, I you know, I can't get anything done today. I'm you know, I completely failed at this, and you're putting these expectations on yourself, just as a modern-day mild example. But Jesus is saying, Walk with me, not not necessarily all you know, follow all my laws here, but walk with me, let me accompany you. And when you put my yoke upon you and you learn from me, not I force laws all over you, um, your soul will find rest. You know, it's not when he says my yoke is easy, he's certainly not meaning that a life of following Jesus is easy, but your soul will be at rest. Your body may be into a halt, but your soul will be in a much better place than trying to get by with doing all the deeds quite literally.

Is it kind of a spirit of the law versus letter of the law?

SPEAKER_01

Or is no okay all right, just asking.

Okay, so there's a lot in these readings. We start with the future, you know, the once the future king will be coming and he's gonna be riding on a donkey. We're ending up with Jesus saying, Walk with me, I'll carry your burden, basically, right?

Mm-hmm. What in the heck do any of those have in common?

SPEAKER_00

How do they connect? Or I should say, let me take that go half step back. Do they connect?

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And if so, how I assume they did. So how do they connect?

SPEAKER_02

How on God's green earth do these make sense? Um, I'm still trying to figure out how the track one, the Genesis readings, line up with Paul and Matthew, but what I do know is that Zechariah.

The Genesis.

SPEAKER_02

Well, if you were on track one, okay. My church is on track two this year. And um, in three years we'll be back on track one, of course. And Zechariah, you have your your king is coming to you, coming, coming to be with the lowly, if you will. Um, and he's the little people is what they look like. The little people, the minions, yes, humble and on donkey. So you have God coming down, and you have Psalm 145. There's uh a verse in there that says, The Lord upholds those who are falling. So you have this powerful king who is lifting up the lowly, which what king does that? And then you have in Romans Paul's trying to figure out what's going on, and you know, breaking things down of just I do the things I don't want to do, and I don't do the things I want to do. Somebody please rescue me. And he even says, Jesus Christ is the one that's gonna rescue me from this. So God coming down again. And then in Matthew, it's like he's bringing the kingdom to the little ones and to the weary and giving them and refreshing their soul. So once again, God coming down, and I think that is God coming down and walking alongside, you know, with a donkey, he's just kind of very slowly and calmly coming in, helping those who are falling, walking beside them, picking them back up, comes down to rescue someone, and that you know that involves a come accompaniment, and then you know, bringing the kingdom to the little ones and the weary, and a yoke, the whole concept of a yoke is is fusing things together. Um, and the Greek word for that, um zygos, so you get the word zygote together.

Another word you hadn't heard, so just basically fused together.

And like I said, to call my Greek rusty is a gross overstate.

SPEAKER_02

I'm not talking about Greek, dude. I'm talking about biology, a zygote. Somebody didn't pay attention to biology.

Last time I had biology was ninth grade. And you don't remember so you're talking well over 35 years ago.

And so you don't remember sex cells and gametes and meiosis and zygote. Uh, bless your heart. Okay.

Well, it makes you feel better to talk down to me. That's keep doing so.

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Nothing you know, nothing says love, like you know, like belittling and talking down to somebody.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. Okay. So that I think is where I'm gonna go with that. Um I pondered looking through the book, A Year of Living Biblically, to maybe get some more emphasis on you can't follow all the rules alone. You can't follow all of God come God's commandments on your own will, independent from God. It just doesn't work. And I'm hoping that maybe I might see some some funny insights to that in that book. Um, the show was, whoo, um, it was corny, but it still managed to dry the point home. So I tried to watch two episodes and I had to cut the second episode off because it was so bad, but okay.

No, that's fine. So, um, okay. So I think maybe here is probably a good place to take a quick break.

All right. See you in a few. Now, so we've had four seeming you know seemingly unrelated challenging reads, yeah, seemingly unrelated. So just as a quick recap, we had the you know, so we had the four different readings.

Um first one talked about God coming down to see the people, humble and on a donkey. Yeah, that was Zachariah. The king comes down, Zechariah.

Yeah, Zechariah.

Then we then we had from the songs uh the the uh vision of the the Lord upholding those who are falling. So a king standing alongside someone to lift them back up, which is completely unheard of for royalty to do.

Then we had Paul's letter to the Romans in Corinth.

Yeah, and that was the most confusing of them all.

Yes, definitely. It's like the ramblings of a an insane man.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, but at the same time, you know, who can who can rescue me from these dilemmas? God, God will come down to rescue and to accompany.

And then Matthew?

SPEAKER_02

Finally, you know, bringing the kingdom to the little ones and the weary who are open to the word of God. And so you have two themes of God coming down and accompaniment. And in juxtaposition, you have all these rules that people are supposed to be following, and you have all these expectations that people had on the king. And so I will be playing around with those three things.

Okay. So recently, I say recently, it's been four or five days now, I was reading some things on metaphysics and philosophy by a guy named Rudolf Otto from like the 1700s. No. Just some guy named some philosopher named Rudolf Otto. And he had a he posited an interesting uh point in there. And you really could phrase it as a question if you wanted to.

Um You were reading Rudolf Otto.

So basically, you know, but it paraphrasing it, but he asked, yeah, kind of asked the question so why did Jesus have to die for you, you know, for this sermon to be preached?

SPEAKER_02

Okay, you got me.

SPEAKER_00

What are you talking about?

SPEAKER_02

Nothing. With this particular situation, why did Jesus have to die for this gospel to be preached? The whole concept of accompaniment and a king doing something completely unheard of. You know, the last thing we would expect a king to do is walk alongside subjects and teach them and love them and have compassion for them. He definitely needed to come down, be in existence, and do these things so that obviously we we can in turn do them and accompany others and walk alongside others on their journey. But it's teaching compassion to again a society that refuses to uphold compassion. This was a society of oppression, and God is teaching through Jesus a society of compassion.

Interesting. Okay. Sounds like you pretty much got your sermon done then.

It might change just like it did last week. So who knows?

Alright. Well, let's get into now we've got the uh, you know, normally we talk about the commemorations, you know, the relevant people or relevant commemorations, people, place, events, things.

Um we got nothing this week, um, just July 4th. So go get your hot dogs.

You mean just the creation of God's country?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Little baby Jesus. That's right. Nine-pound, leaving ounce of bundle of joy.

When little baby Jesus wrapped the American flag around his shoulders and wrote the Declaration of Independence, he didn't he didn't do it because he had nothing better to do.

Yeah, some people think that, that's for sure.

SPEAKER_00

So also maybe, and this is something maybe going forward, this might be a good spot for to review. All right, so we had last week's podcast. You did last week's sermon.

There you go. How'd it go? What I had prepared for and what came out of my mouth were two entirely different things. So I was um expecting to preach on dangerous hospitality and how one cup of cold water may not mean anything, but enough cups of cold water can create a revolution. And what came out of my mouth was talking about faith and the faith that Abraham had that God would provide a substitute for his son, and um having faith in general of just not fearing what was coming next, not fearing that God would provide. And so you will see if you listen to our second episode that what we talked about is it up on the is it up on the what we talked about and uh what I preached on were night and day, different.
