Rise and Lead

Overcoming Insecurity to Reach Your Fullest Potential with Benjamin Lundquist - RAL 90

Benjamin Lundquist

On this episode, Overcoming Insecurity to Reach Your Fullest Potential. I want to help you push past your insecurities so you can lead powerfully, make a greater impact, and fulfill the call God has placed on your life. Insecurity is a silent thief - it robs you of confidence, clouds your judgment, and convinces you that you're not enough, even when God says you are. It causes you to second-guess your gifts, shrink in rooms you were called to lead, and hesitate when you should be taking bold, faith-filled action. When you're focused on what you're not, you miss out on what you are: chosen, equipped, and destined for impact. Insecurity keeps you surviving, not thriving—but you were made for more. That is what this episode is all about.

Episode Quote:

"Insecurity keeps your gifts locked inside, buried beneath fear, doubt, and comparison. When you question your worth, you withhold what the world desperately needs - your voice, your wisdom, your impact. You can’t release your value when you don’t believe you have any. You will sit at tables and not speak up. You will stand at the threshold of opportunities and not move forward. You will dream of what the future could be like and not take action. The antidote for insecurity is identity and action."

Speaker 1:

I know there's somebody who desperately needs this conversation because insecurity is real and insecurity has crippled so many dreams and it's held so many people back from achieving their fullest potential. I am ready to dive into this topic with you. Before I do, let's pray together. God, there are many of us who feel held back by insecurity. We hear the words you say about us and we read the promises, but we often don't believe them for ourselves. Give us the clarity we need to start replacing lies with truth, the truth of who we are and the truth of what is possible. Through you, in your name, we pray amen. I want to help you push past your insecurities so you can lead powerfully, make a greater impact and fulfill the call God has placed on your life. So let's get into it.

Speaker 1:

Research shows that insecurity is often rooted in past experiences like failure, rejection, criticism or even childhood experiences where affirmation was lacking. Dr Brene Brown, a research professor and best-selling author known for her work on vulnerability and courage, says this insecurity is the birthplace of shame and fear. It corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change. Leaders by nature are often high achievers, but with that drive comes pressure. The higher you rise, the greater the pressure to prove yourself. Imposter syndrome can creep in, the fear of not measuring up, the doubt that someone else could do it better than you, or believing the lies that you are too old, too young, too late or that you have missed your opportunity altogether. But here's the problem when insecurity is left unchecked, it will sabotage your growth and ultimately cripple your impact. It will prevent you from taking risks, seizing opportunities and leading boldly. Insecurity keeps your gifts locked inside, buried beneath fear, doubt and comparison. When you question your worth, you withhold what the world desperately needs your voice, your wisdom, your impact. You can't release your value when you don't believe you have any. Let me say that again you can't release your value when you don't believe you have any. You will sit at tables and not speak up. You will stand at the threshold of opportunities and not move forward. You will dream of what the future could be like and not take action. The antidote for insecurity is identity and action. We're going to come back to that antidote in just a minute.

Speaker 1:

I want to look at the biblical case study of Moses. Here was a man called by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, but what was his initial response when God gave him that calling and assignment? Moses says oh my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue. Moses, like many of us, at times was focused on his inadequacies rather than God's calling and empowerment. But here is God's response, and it's clear who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now, therefore, go and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say. I don't know about you, but there's a lot for me to think about in that case study, because I've been there too.

Speaker 1:

In that case study, because I've been there too, I'm looking at an open door, a calling or an assignment, and the first thing that keeps coming to my mind are all of my inadequacies, all the times in the past when things didn't go as planned and instead of operating by faith, I am approaching life and leadership by fear, and I think the lesson here is powerful. Insecurity thrives when we focus on our limitations rather than God's provision. Let me say that again Insecurity thrives when we focus on our limitations rather than God's provision. Moses overcame his insecurity not by magically feeling more confident, but by trusting God, taking action and stepping into his calling. True confidence doesn't come from talent alone. It comes from identity. When you anchor your identity in God and believe what he says about you, insecurity begins to lose its grip. I just need to lean into this for a moment. So many of you are believing things about yourself that are not true. I'm going to say that again. So many of you are believing things about yourself that are not true. If God wouldn't say it about you, you shouldn't be thinking it about you.

Speaker 1:

In life and leadership, there is a constant need to steward your mind. Don't let things take room in your head that are not in harmony with what God has said about you. And what God has said about you is that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Knowing who you are in God's eyes should be the foundation of your confidence. Some of you have such a hard time thinking well of yourselves. You're never going to overcome insecurity if the source of discouragement is your own voice. You've got to believe in your worth and value for yourself. But it doesn't stop there. Knowing your identity is only the beginning. You have to take action based on that belief.

Speaker 1:

Confidence is not simply about what you believe in your head, but confidence is built on what you do with your life. It's about the decisions you make and the action you take. Competence builds confidence. As you grow in skill, knowledge and expertise, insecurity begins to fade. Action is the antidote to insecurity. John Maxwell, leadership author and expert, puts it this way Confidence comes from competence and competence comes from action. I hope the lights are starting to come on for you. You need a rock solid identity and you need to be a person of action. The mistake many people make is waiting to feel confident before they act, but confidence follows action. Every time you step forward, every time you take action in spite of fear, you build confidence.

Speaker 1:

I want to give you four practical steps to overcome insecurity. Number one anchor your identity in God's truth. Write truth every day, speak truth every day. Surround yourself with people who affirm what is true about you and speak truth into other people about you. And speak truth into other people. Every time you speak truth into somebody else, you are reminded of what is true about you. Use your voice. Number two develop your skills and competence intentionally. Your skills and your gifts are your responsibility. Sharpen your tools and continue growing and developing.

Speaker 1:

There are levels to it. Don't be satisfied with good when you were created for great. Step number three take action despite your insecurity. Clarify the next step you need to take and step forward Again. Action builds competence and competence builds confidence builds confidence. And step number four reflect on your progress and celebrate your wins, no matter how small they may be. Revisit your journey and remind yourself of how far you have come and all you have accomplished through God and through taking action. Many of you are experiencing things today that you prayed about years ago. Don't miss the miracle moments that are happening in the present because you were so discouraged about your progress. Remember insecurity is not defeated in the mind alone. It's defeated in the trenches, through action, through faith and through perseverance.

Speaker 1:

This message is for you. You were created for greatness. You were designed to lead to impact and to influence, but you can't do that. If you are bound by insecurity, you've got to rise above it. You must lead in spite of it.

Speaker 1:

Let me speak this directly into the deepest parts of you, the places where insecurity has tried to plant its roots. That feeling that you're not good enough. It's a lie. That doubt that someone else can do it better. It's a distraction. That fear that your flaws are too big to overcome. It's a deception. God didn't make a mistake when he created you. He designed you with intention, purpose and gifts that the world needs. But here's the truth the gifts God has given you are not just for you. They're meant to be poured out into the lives of others. Whatever insecurity you're struggling with, confront it, acknowledge it, but don't let it dictate your future. You are called to lead. You are called to impact lives. You are called to glorify God through your gifts.

Speaker 1:

Moses he led a nation out of slavery by addressing his own insecurity, by believing God's promises of provision and by taking action again and again. Was it an easy journey? Absolutely not, but it changed the course of history. Leadership is not easy. Leading yourself is not easy, but it's worth it. Keep anchoring your identity in God, keep developing your competence through action and, most importantly, keep moving forward. On the other side of insecurity is your fullest potential.
