The Ash Wednesday Rite of Imposition of Ashes is followed by a meditation on the concept of the propitious, "pleasing to [the] God[s]." Our helplessness to please God is remedied by God Himself who gave His Son to make peace so that now the time to turn to Him is propitious. The sobering hymn, "Who Knows when Death may Overtake Me" accompanies this solemn occasion of reflection and repentance.
