Colossians 3:5-11 – Get rid of your old self and put on your new self.

One of the problems that Paul was facing in the early church was the people were becoming Christians but then carrying on exactly the way that had before and Paul wants to explain why that is wrong.
Paul here talks of stripping off our old nature and all its wicked deeds and putting on your new nature and thereby being renewed as you learn to know God and become like him. This is a picture they would understand as this is what happened in Israel at this time when people were Baptised.

Those being Baptised would take off their old set of clothes and leave them at one side and then get baptised and as they came out of the water they would receive a new set of clothes which would normally be a white robe signifying their new life in Christ.

This still happens today in Israel as we saw when we were there

Read this passage in The Message version: "You are done with that old life….."
This is so important as its by Christ’s blood alone that this change takes place not of our own doing?
1 Corinthians 1:2
v30

OUR YORKSHIRE FARM - ILLUSTRATION
Lamb skinned and put on orphan – accepted by mother – New Life comes through the sacrifice of another.
So Paul contrasts for us what the old life was like and what our new life should be like – all this worked in and by the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is not done by our own efforts!
v10

Old Self – Sinful Nature | New Self – Christ In You
Sexual Immorality | Tender hearted Mercy
Impurity | Kindness
Lust | Humility
Evil desires | Gentleness
Greed | Patience
Anger/Rage | Caring for each other
Malicious behaviour | Forgiving each other
Slander | Clothed in Love
Dirty Language | Harmony
Lies | Peace

You can see the contrast in what we are naturally and what we should be – In Christ.

Galatians 5:16–24
v24

When are right with God and the Holy Spirit is leading and guiding our lives we are like different people and that is exactly what Paul is trying to tell the Church in this passage. Stay close to God – let the Holy Spirt lead and guide you – be full of the spirit and your life will be full of the fruit of the spirit which is listed here , love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

Hebrews 10 talks of Jesus sacrifice for sins – once and for all time – This is what he has done for us!

Hebrews 10:11-“Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the alter day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins. BUT our high priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time…. For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made Holy, and the Holy Spirit also testifies that this is so: for he says
“This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day says the Lord, I will put my laws in their hearts and I will write them on their minds”

This is so important to understand because no longer it’s about a set of rules and regulations that we must keep (external) rather its about our hearts and our hearts being changed from the inside – effecting the outside and how we act – We know when we have sinned because we are convicted by the Holy Spirit who lives in us – Christ in you….. The recurring theme of Colossians.

Colossians 3:11

THE RESULT OF THE NEW COVENANT?
v19 – “And so dear brothers and sisters we can boldly enter Heavens most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus”
Romans 8:28 - Read the whole chapter!!

Let’s be like Isaiah who is thrilled at what God has done

Isaiah 61:10

It’s all about Jesus – our wonderful saviour and sacrifice – that makes us acceptable to God and loved by him for eternity.
