Kevin Palmieri
(0:00) When you look back in the past, one of two things is going to happen. (0:04) You're going to say, Oh my goodness, I was way better five years ago than I am today. (0:08) Or you're going to say, Oh my goodness, I have gotten so much better over the last five years.(0:13) Hopefully it's the second one, but the first one can be motivation and or the kick in the butt that you may need. (0:19) I've been tracking habits for 10 years and all my clients are tracking something. (0:26) And I found a habit recently.(0:29) I started doing probably two months ago, and it is the most powerful habit to track in my opinion. (0:36) Welcome to Next Level University. (0:38) I'm your host, Kevin Palmieri.(0:40) And I'm your co-host, Alan Lazarus. (0:43) At NLU, we believe in a heart-driven, but no BS approach to holistic self-improvement for dream chasers. (0:50) Our goal with every episode is to help you level up your life, love, health, and wealth.(0:57) We bring you a new episode every single day on topics like confidence, self-belief, self-worth, self-awareness, relationships, boundaries, consistency, habits, and defining your own unique version of success. (1:12) Self-improvement in your pocket every day from anywhere, completely free. (1:19) Welcome to Next Level University.(1:24) Next Level Nation today for episode number 2,141. (1:29) This habit is way more powerful than you'd think. (1:34) I have been on many podcasts where I talk about reflection.(1:40) You've heard me talk about reflection a thousand times. (1:42) I love it. (1:42) It's one of my favorite things to do.(1:44) When I'm really high emotionally or really low emotionally, I go back and look at our old content. (1:49) Sometimes when I'm on a podcast, I will say, if you're out there right now, I want you to take out your phone. (1:56) Assuming you're not a podcaster, assuming you're not a content creator, take out your phone, open up the voice app.(2:01) I want you to talk about where you are financially, where you are when it comes to love, where you are physically, and how your life is trending. (2:09) I want you to check in on that in a month. (2:11) I want you to do the same thing.(2:12) I want you to keep doing that for the next year. (2:15) I guarantee something will happen. (2:17) I can't guarantee what that something will be, but something will happen.(2:21) That's essentially what we're talking about today, but from a different perspective. (2:25) I'm going to kick it to you because it's your habit. (2:27) Normally, I would steal it and take full credit for it, but I'm feeling confident and certain today.(2:32) Four years ago today, on this day, Kevin and Alan were in Arizona at an event. (2:44) Four years ago? (2:45) Mm-hmm.(2:46) Four years ago. (2:48) We were in, it was July 25th, 2021, and I'm seeing a picture of all of us in Arizona. (2:57) What was the name of the event?(2:58) Do you remember? (2:59) No, because I think that's... (3:00) Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.(3:02) I had to pull you aside and say, hey, man, we had to go for a walk. (3:08) Wasn't that Colorado? (3:09) Oh, I'm sorry.(3:09) Colorado.
Alan Lazaros
(3:10) I was going to say.
Kevin Palmieri
(3:11) My fault. (3:11) It's out west. (3:12) It's my bad.(3:13) Yeah, but it was hot. (3:15) I remember it was like 100 degrees that day. (3:17) I thought I was going to die outside.(3:18) It was a, yeah, there was like a mastermind thing, and they said, hey, the best way to make more money is just to add a zero to your pricing. (3:24) And I was like, ha, that's funny. (3:27) What's actually the lesson?(3:28) And that was the actual lesson. (3:29) This is Kev. (3:31) Look at this.(3:32) He's huddled in the center. (3:34) Little dude's in the middle. (3:35) Look at you, Jack, though.
Alan Lazaros
(3:37) Four years ago.
Kevin Palmieri
(3:37) Look at the biceps on him. (3:39) But little dude, you're literally like this, just huddled. (3:42) I don't even know where I am.(3:43) I'm over here on the left. (3:45) The point of this, listeners, viewers, is Facebook memory of the day has changed my life. (3:53) And I just got a new client.(3:54) He's twice a week now. (3:56) He was the one I talked about yesterday. (3:58) And I said, that's got to be a habit.(4:03) 14 years ago today, software engineering is a race between software engineers making bigger and better idiot-proof software and the universe making bigger and better idiots. (4:12) So far, the universe is winning. (4:14) R.(4:14) Cook. (4:15) It wasn't my quote. (4:17) That was back when I was working, I think, at iRobot.(4:19) And I was just very alarmed back then. (4:22) And I was learning from college to corporate some of the huge gaps in knowledge and awareness. (4:31) And when I got to corporate, I was very alarmed at how few people thought like an engineer.(4:36) And now I understand all that. (4:37) But 14 years ago, I was what? (4:42) 22?(4:43) You were 22.
Alan Lazaros
(4:45) Yeah.
Kevin Palmieri
(4:47) It's so cool to be able to hear my thoughts and it triggered the memory. (4:56) And in neuroscience, what this does when you look at a picture is it re-triggers the memory. (5:00) Because every memory is tagged with an emotion.(5:02) And you just get to re-experience it and go, oh. (5:07) Real quick, two of my clients, I have a personal development book list for them, also a film list. (5:17) And so it's film, what's the frame to look through?(5:22) And one of my clients, I recommended Good Will Hunting. (5:25) I said, have you seen it? (5:26) She said, yeah.(5:27) But it was a long time ago. (5:28) I said, how long ago? (5:29) She said, 10 years.(5:29) I said, I promise it'll be different this time. (5:33) She went and watched the film. (5:36) And she came back with, whoa.(5:39) I, with this and that Robin Williams character, I get it. (5:44) I said, isn't it interesting how the film didn't change at all? (5:49) Only your consciousness changed.(5:51) You watched the same fucking movie. (5:55) And it was completely different. (5:57) And I said, true or false, you never used to actually watch movies?(6:00) She said, no. (6:01) I used to sit in front of a TV. (6:02) I didn't watch film.(6:04) I said that. (6:05) I remember one time you asked me, what's the difference between a movie and a film? (6:07) A film is you look at it from the lens of a bunch of different existential.(6:12) The reason films are awesome is not just for entertainment. (6:15) I think that's dumb. (6:16) Films are awesome because they teach us about life.(6:18) I like to be entertained also. (6:21) I know. (6:21) I know.(6:22) John Wick was on when I was out to dinner, when we were in Myrtle Beach. (6:27) And it was the part where, spoiler alert and sadness alert, they killed a puppy. (6:32) Oh no.(6:32) And I was like, you son of a bitch. (6:34) Can't have it. (6:35) So they deserve what they got.(6:37) Yeah, of course they do. (6:38) Yeah, 100%. (6:41) But the point of this is the movie didn't change at all, but she has changed exponentially.(6:50) So she watched the same movie from a new level of awareness. (6:54) And she took 10 times more out of it. (6:57) And I think that that's what growth is.(6:58) And so Facebook memory of the day, going down memory lane, learning from the past, particularly your past experiences. (7:06) It's really, it's the metaphor, I think, is you pull back the bow and then it shoots you forward. (7:11) And, but not just shoots you forward in terms of propels you forward motivation-wise.(7:15) I think it does that too. (7:16) But I think it also helps you re-aim. (7:18) You can re-aim it and then shoot it.(7:21) And I think that's a good metaphor.
Alan Lazaros
(7:21) Let me ask you a question.
Kevin Palmieri
(7:22) Let me ask you a question. (7:23) Give me one example of a Facebook memory of the day where you're like, fuck yeah. (7:28) So much better today than I used to be.(7:30) You know, give me one example of a Facebook memory of the day where you look back and say, fuck, I have really, really, really let it go. (7:38) I'm guessing it's going to be in fitness, unfortunately. (7:41) But because it's not always good vibes.(7:45) And oh my goodness, I've grown so much. (7:46) Sometimes it's holy shit. (7:47) I have completely lost sight of insert thing here.(7:51) So one came up when I just did it. (7:54) So I don't know. (7:55) I mean, it's not loading right now.(7:57) I'm going to see what mine is then. (7:58) Let's do this. (7:59) I think this is good.(7:59) It's good that we're doing this. (8:00) And for all the listeners and viewers, throw up Facebook. (8:02) Again, I said this to Kev before we hit record.(8:07) Never before in human history was it possible to do this, right? (8:10) Facebook is the first thing really to create an opportunity for you to have all of your thoughts, photos, this amazing track record. (8:20) And when I say amazing, it's obviously curated for the public medium.(8:23) So be aware that it's not your actual thoughts and feelings. (8:26) But never before in human history could you go back and look seven years ago on Instagram, it's me with a big, big old back. (8:35) Oh, okay.(8:36) Jacked. (8:37) And that is an example to answer your question, Kev, of what in the actual fuck, Alan? (8:44) What have you done, sir?(8:47) That is a great, at one point that was just a dream because I was the tall, lanky loser. (8:54) And this one, another one. (8:58) It's another photo that I've, that was the best shape I've ever been in right there, for those listening.(9:02) It's one of Alan's modeling shots. (9:05) I think that photo by the lake was probably, that was the most fulfilled I've ever been in physical fitness. (9:11) I'm far more fulfilled in my life right now, but I'm physical fitness.(9:15) I mean, what in the actual F Alan? (9:18) Okay. (9:18) So that's an example of I've gotten so much worse.(9:20) Yep. (9:22) Dude, when I listened to us, a podcasting, listen to this, it's going to be brutal. (9:26) No, don't do it.(9:27) Highlight reel clip. (9:33) So the, the social media is a highlight reel. (9:36) Like nobody shows themselves crying into a pillow at night.(9:39) Actually, some people do believe it or not, which is good, which is good. (9:41) But most people don't. (9:42) You see the winds, you see the nice cars, you see the vacations.(9:46) What you don't see is people grinding for 14 hours in a basement somewhere. (9:51) What episode was that? (9:53) That had to be later on, right?(9:55) Yeah, yeah, yeah. (9:56) Hold on, hold on. (9:56) 600, 700s.(9:57) This was five years ago. (10:00) We used to actually do these clips and put the whole episode up. (10:06) That was you.(10:06) Yeah, that was me. (10:08) Yeah, take it easy. (10:08) Take it easy.(10:09) I don't know what episode it doesn't show the episode number. (10:11) I apologize. (10:12) No worries.(10:13) When was the last time you went back? (10:15) Boom, boom. (10:16) Oh, wait, I have a link to it.(10:18) Let's see if it comes up. (10:19) Yeah, let's hope it works. (10:20) Great marketing at its finest.(10:22) You know it. (10:23) For this episode and 400 plus more, see below. (10:25) So this is around 400.(10:27) Interesting. (10:28) We were in the studio. (10:28) It was still a Hyperconscious podcast.(10:30) Okay, so that's pre-500. (10:32) Yeah, so episode 398. (10:34) That was episode 398.(10:36) So that is another example of... (10:38) Well, that's an example to answer your question of we've gotten a lot better. (10:43) NLU listener, what is happening?(10:46) I just wanted to jump in here and let you know if you want to get to the next level faster, we have a free virtual monthly meetup at the first Thursday of every month. (10:54) You can connect with like-minded people and become a bigger part of this amazing global community. (11:00) The link to register will be in the show notes.(11:04) I got one for you. (11:05) Okay, this is from 2016. (11:09) Oh, pretty jacked.(11:10) Kid was jacked. (11:11) I had a Playboy University shirt for some reason. (11:14) It's comfortable.(11:15) It's so comfortable. (11:16) This is the caption. (11:17) It's about fitness.(11:19) And again, this is July 25, 2016. (11:22) So this is like a year before the Hyperconscious podcast. (11:25) Again, I was already trying to be inspirational.(11:29) I remember, B-E-F-D, better every fucking day. (11:32) Let's be real. (11:33) I'll never forget that.(11:34) Dramatic reading time. (11:36) I don't like public reading because I feel like I'm going to fuck it all up. (11:39) Let's be real.(11:40) Most people let their minds trick them into being less than they can be. (11:43) The mind is such a powerful force. (11:46) Train it to realize even if you're tricking yourself into being more than you thought you can be, you'll eventually reach your peak.(11:52) That's dumb as shit. (11:53) That peak is most likely far beyond your expectations. (11:57) You become what you think of yourself slash what you think people think of you.(12:03) Be the best you. (12:04) First couple of lines, pretty good. (12:06) After that, we kind of trailed off to shit.(12:07) Be the best you, baby. (12:09) Be the best you. (12:10) And I think this still stands.(12:12) Let's be real. (12:12) Most people let their minds trick them into being less than they can be. (12:16) I think that's still factually accurate.(12:19) You had it, man. (12:20) One more because this is a memory lane. (12:21) I had something.(12:24) Oh no, I'm just saying I had something like uh... (12:26) Oh yeah. (12:26) Yeah, yeah.(12:27) I always wanted to do this and I always wanted to know how to inspire and motivate and I think for most of my life I just... (12:36) I thought motivation was enough. (12:37) It's like if I can motivate someone, that's the key.(12:39) That's a good start. (12:41) It's just not... (12:41) that's not the whole game.(12:42) Yeah. (12:44) And we had this in us. (12:46) Yes.(12:47) It was just... (12:48) I think we all have an essence. (12:51) And you got to find it and get the mud off it.(12:54) Get the mud off your essence. (12:55) It's like a light. (12:55) It's like a glass.(12:57) Yeah, it's like a glass of water with mud in it. (12:59) You just got to clear some of the mud. (13:01) As you can see, that was a muddy post by Kev, but he's still saying the same shit, but same stuff to this day.(13:07) Way better and way less mud.
Alan Lazaros
(13:10) Yes.
Kevin Palmieri
(13:10) Yes. (13:11) I said seven years ago on Instagram, I tweeted. (13:14) I used to screenshot my tweets back when it was actually Twitter.(13:18) See? (13:18) Perspective. (13:19) Interesting.(13:19) Your future self is begging you to start taking your health and fitness goals more seriously. (13:26) That's it. (13:27) That's the whole thing.(13:28) That's good, though. (13:29) That's the whole thing. (13:29) Thank you.(13:30) You had a time where you were writing literal novels and I was like, I don't know if anybody's reading that, man. (13:34) And now you've gone back to writing novels, which I think is important. (13:37) Some people were.(13:38) I was also... (13:39) what no one knows is I was practicing writing. (13:40) Yeah.(13:41) That was before all my super successful blogs on LinkedIn. (13:45) My blogs actually do have some love on there. (13:47) I've got 22 blogs on LinkedIn.(13:49) I worked really fucking hard on those. (13:52) So we're going to link my LinkedIn in the... (13:54) It probably already is.(13:54) But I'm telling you, there's some good stuff in there. (13:57) Life changing. (13:58) Boring.(13:59) Boring. (14:00) But life changing. (14:01) So what do we do with this?(14:02) Okay, so this is a habit. (14:03) You can literally start tracking this habit. (14:05) Facebook memory of the day.(14:06) Every day, go back. (14:07) And if you're on your cell phone, you can literally open up Facebook and hit... (14:12) Click the bottom right.(14:13) Yeah, menu. (14:14) And then it should be the second little button on the left. (14:16) It'll say friends, then memories.(14:18) Click memories. (14:19) Click memories, and then you just scroll. (14:21) Wait for it to load, and then you just scroll down.(14:24) And the farther you scroll down, the farther it goes back in time. (14:29) And what's the point of that? (14:30) The point is not just to go down memory lane.(14:32) I started doing this with a client, and she said it's so brutal. (14:35) Of course it is. (14:37) You were...(14:37) 14 years ago, you were 15 years old. (14:41) She saw a picture of her and her ex that was very toxic. (14:43) It's just do it from the frame of I'm trying to learn.(14:48) I'm not going to get stuck in shame. (14:50) I'm not going to... (14:52) Even that post I just read about me at iRobot, it's why was I saying that?(14:58) And why didn't I provide more context? (15:01) And just make sure it's constructive, that's all. (15:07) If you don't have Facebook, what do you do?(15:09) I feel like most people have Facebook, but if you don't have Facebook, what do you do? (15:13) People our age mostly do. (15:15) Yeah, but what if you don't?(15:16) Hypothetically. (15:18) You don't get to do this. (15:19) You can do Instagram stories.(15:21) Instagram, if you have an Instagram, Instagram stories goes back too. (15:25) It doesn't have the same function, but you can scroll all the way back on all your stories, depending on what your privacy settings were. (15:32) Stories?(15:33) Something I needed to bring up. (15:34) Yeah. (15:34) How the hell do I do that?(15:36) I don't know. (15:38) I don't know. (15:38) One of my clients does it.(15:39) I genuinely can't tell you. (15:40) Never mind. (15:41) All right.(15:42) You can do it. (15:43) Chat GPT it. (15:45) So what did I want to share with you?(15:47) Holy crap. (15:48) It's going to come back. (15:49) It always comes back.(15:55) Nothing. (15:56) Nothing. (15:56) What were we talking about?(15:57) We were talking about all sorts, all types of different shit. (16:00) All sorts of different stuff. (16:02) We're talking about- Facebook memories, going back.(16:06) I was explaining how to go through and do the actual habit. (16:11) Track it every day. (16:12) I'll remember on the next episode, maybe.(16:14) Tune into the next episode. (16:16) It'll probably come to me randomly when Kevin's talking and we'll talk about it. (16:19) What's the next lesson for you?(16:25) I remember when I was a little kid, I didn't understand why we were learning history. (16:30) Why do I have to memorize the capitals? (16:31) I think it's stupid.(16:32) You can just Google it. (16:34) I now think history is extremely important. (16:37) The history of an industry, the history of your life, the history of technology.(16:40) It's very important to understand how things were so that you can learn from them. (16:44) You learn from failure and you double down on success. (16:47) You can't do that if you don't learn from history.(16:52) Learn from your own history of your own experiences. (16:54) Look back and go, oh, I regret that. (16:59) Don't do that anymore.(17:01) Then look back and go, I was really onto something there. (17:04) I'm going to do more of that. (17:06) What's the capital of Kansas?(17:09) Oklahoma City? (17:11) I think it's Topeka. (17:13) Nice.(17:14) Is it Oklahoma City? (17:15) I have no idea. (17:15) Oklahoma?(17:16) No, that would be Oklahoma. (17:22) I get it. (17:23) I appreciate the confidence though.(17:25) You just fired that up there.
Alan Lazaros
(17:26) I respect the confidence. (17:27) And again, I don't even know if that's correct.
Kevin Palmieri
(17:29) Math and science guy. (17:30) Didn't care. (17:31) I remember when we had a test.(17:33) It was like, all right, we're going to... (17:35) One of the tests was, I'm going to give you a blank map and you have to do all the capitals. (17:39) No, not a fucking chance.(17:41) I am in trouble here. (17:42) I think I did do it. (17:43) I did it terribly.(17:44) I don't know why I just said Oklahoma City. (17:45) That's what came up. (17:46) I respect this.(17:47) I'm like, Oklahoma City. (17:49) I think it's Topeka. (17:50) I think.(17:51) Yeah, most likely. (17:51) But I don't know another city. (17:53) I'm assuming Oklahoma City is Oklahoma.(17:56) Maybe. (17:57) There's somebody out there right now saying like, you guys don't know anything. (18:00) We don't.(18:01) We don't. (18:02) I don't care. (18:03) I really don't.
Alan Lazaros
(18:03) Really.
Kevin Palmieri
(18:04) Same. (18:04) If I'm ever on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire... (18:05) I know it's Columbus, Ohio, because I drove through it.(18:08) Nice. (18:08) If I'm ever on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and that's the question, I will phone a friend. (18:11) For sure.(18:12) Don't call me. (18:13) I'm not going to call you. (18:14) Trust me.(18:14) If it's a math question... (18:15) Can I phone ChatGPT? (18:16) Yeah.(18:17) If it's a math question, I will do that. (18:19) My takeaway would be, sometimes the only real way to live in the truth is to look in the past, because you can't delude yourself about it. (18:27) I can delude myself about...(18:28) Well, I know. (18:29) I look good today based on how much effort I'm putting in, and I'm busy, and... (18:34) Okay, look back five years ago.(18:36) I looked better five years ago than I do today. (18:38) Some of that will be a byproduct of circumstances, and some of that is also... (18:43) I...(18:44) You can't really compare yourself to yesterday, because nothing changes. (18:51) It's so hard. (18:53) That's why I love talking about seasons.(18:55) Longest lesson ever of all time. (18:56) That's why I love talking about seasons so much. (18:58) I feel like I'm in an insane season right now, where there's so much going on.(19:03) It's only been like that for a couple months. (19:07) It feels like it's been like that forever.
Alan Lazaros
(19:09) I know.
Kevin Palmieri
(19:10) So it's really hard. (19:11) You lose track of time, and you lose track of perspective. (19:14) So when you look back, you're gonna see a version of truth compared to the version of truth from today.(19:19) Yep, for sure. (19:20) Boom. (19:20) All right, cool.(19:22) All right, Next Level Nation, if you are looking for an amazing group of humans who are into personal development and getting to the next level a little bit, a little bit, a little bit, or a lot every single day, join our private Facebook group.
