Kevin Palmieri

(0:00) I used to love UFC and I love UFC less than I used to and I think one of the reasons is because I do not identify with the community that watches UFC anymore. (0:12) Identity, process, goal. (0:16) Identity, process, goal.(0:18) We talked about process and goal on the last episode. (0:20) Right now we're going to talk about identity and community and how that connects. (0:24) Welcome to Next Level University.(0:26) I'm your host Kevin Palmieri. (0:28) And I'm your co-host Alan Lazarus. (0:31) At NLU we believe in a heart-driven but no BS approach to holistic self-improvement for dream chasers.(0:38) Our goal with every episode is to help you level up your life, love, health, and wealth. (0:44) We bring you a new episode every single day on topics like confidence, self-belief, self-worth, self-awareness, relationships, boundaries, consistency, habits, and defining your own unique version of success. (1:00) Self-improvement in your pocket, every day, from anywhere, completely free.(1:07) Welcome to Next Level University. (1:12) Next Level Nation. (1:14) Today for episode number 2204, does your community align with your goals?(1:19) I was talking to my wife. (1:20) I gotta adjust something real quick. (1:22) I was talking to my wife yesterday.(1:24) And I said, I couldn't tell you the last time I ordered UFC. (1:29) I don't, it's been months. (1:30) And she said, do you not like it?(1:32) And I said, no, I still love mixed martial arts, but I just don't identify with the community anymore. (1:39) It's not, when I started watching mixed martial arts, I started in high school. (1:45) I was probably like, was I a freshman in high school?(1:50) 2003. (1:50) Who was the guy we interviewed that was back in the early 2000s? (1:53) Kenny Florian.(1:53) Nice. (1:54) Kenny Florian from Boston. (1:55) I think he's from Boston.(1:57) I think I started watching like 2003. (2:00) That must have been a trip for you, man. (2:01) It was.(2:01) It was a dream come true. (2:03) It's one of, that's, people ask me, what's your favorite interview? (2:04) Kenny Florian, for sure.(2:06) I interviewed somebody I watched on TV. (2:08) That, that, best. (2:09) I get to ask him what it was like to fight people I watched him fight.(2:11) That was the best ever of all time. (2:13) That's awesome. (2:14) The best.(2:15) Cool, man. (2:16) And back then it was different. (2:18) It was, it wasn't the cool, it wasn't cool to be a fan.(2:21) It wasn't trending. (2:23) It wasn't viral. (2:24) That's not what influencers did.(2:25) And now it's just, I don't know. (2:28) I don't, it's not the same. (2:29) It's not the same as it used to be.(2:30) And I just don't identify with the community that watches it anymore. (2:34) And I think that's a very, a very appropriate parallel to what we're talking about today. (2:40) Give me the permission, permission.(2:43) Ready? (2:44) Permission to be mean for a second. (2:46) Okay.(2:46) I do this with clients all the time. (2:47) It's very important. (2:48) We always say the nice things about people.(2:50) We never say the things that piss us off. (2:53) Permission to be mean. (2:54) Give me one thing that you are fucking annoyed by, by the UFC community.(3:00) Again, this is a blanket statement. (3:02) Permission to be mean. (3:03) This is a blanket statement.(3:03) Mm-hmm. (3:05) I would say the, whether it's the actual majority or just the louder piece of it that, that makes it seem like it's the majority are racist, sexist, just toxic, just toxic shit. (3:24) It, because it's crossed.

Alan Lazaros

(3:25) Give me an example.

Kevin Palmieri

(3:28) I mean, yeah, there's certain fighters that are just like, they are literally racist. (3:34) And they talk about how they don't like certain groups of people. (3:37) And they're, they're some of the most popular fighters.(3:41) It's fucking mind blowing to me. (3:42) Like, this is not a good person. (3:44) This is not a good, this is not a good human being.(3:46) Like, what are we doing here? (3:47) Yeah. (3:47) That I can't.(3:48) It's very hard to separate. (3:49) I find that so hard because I love film. (3:52) You love UFC and martial arts.(3:54) Yeah. (3:54) It's still not for me. (3:55) Because these people built their names on this.(3:58) This is like their character. (4:01) Yeah. (4:01) It's not like they're a movie where it's like, Oh, this is a really good movie.(4:04) Oh, this person kind of sucks. (4:06) Not only is this person, not a good fighter, they're not that good. (4:10) It's not like they're the best fighter.(4:12) They're just the best at getting trauma wound up. (4:18) So that's one. (4:19) That's one.(4:20) Yeah, man. (4:21) That's so makes me sad. (4:23) I'm honestly, it's because there's a little piece of me that's nervous, not nervous, but like, when I used to say I was a UFC fan or a mixed martial arts fan in general, I still love mixed martial arts.(4:33) I liked, I just like UFC less than I used to. (4:36) It meant something different than it means today. (4:39) And I, you don't want to be associated with that.(4:41) I don't really want to be associated with it. (4:43) No, not like I used to. (4:44) I don't, I don't wear my UFC sweatshirt as much.(4:46) Like you'll never see me wear that on here again. (4:48) Ever. (4:48) I'll never wear that again.(4:50) Not on here. (4:50) Not on, not on, on film at least. (4:53) You remember the day when you and I could never watch super bad again?(4:56) Yes. (4:58) It makes me sad. (4:59) Like I missed, I loved watching you.(5:01) I, again, but to me, it, I can't identify with what seems like the majority of people that watch anymore. (5:11) So, um, now this is the interesting thing. (5:14) Again, I know I talk about golf a lot on here.(5:16) I talk about the very few things I do. (5:17) I don't do fucking anything. (5:18) I go to the gym and I play golf and I podcast 40 times a week.(5:23) One of the interesting things about that is I've been paired with random people. (5:28) When I go to play, everybody has been fucking awesome. (5:31) I thought everybody was going to be dingoes.(5:34) I thought they were all going to be like, Oh, you suck. (5:36) I've been better than a lot of them somehow. (5:37) I don't know, which speaks to the fact that a lot of people are getting into it.(5:40) But, but that's a whole nother thing. (5:42) I think the community, that's a whole thing that's going to happen to the golf community is fucking now it's popular to be into golf and I don't know. (5:53) So this goes into the whole, we all have a responsibility to vote with our time and money.(6:03) And so for, I'll give you another example. (6:09) I fucking love my Tesla, love it, but I don't want to be associated with any of that, you know? (6:15) So it's very hard to align everything about you.(6:22) Ah, yeah, this, this, okay. (6:23) We're going to go quick with it. (6:25) It's the 21st century.(6:26) It's 2025. (6:27) I have been wildly disappointed in a lot of people and it really bothers me. (6:37) So I'll give you an example.(6:38) So one of my heroes growing up was Steve Jobs and I wanted to change the world, dent the universe in my own unique way. (6:45) I have a quote behind me. (6:48) The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do think differently.(6:53) I still resonate with all of that. (6:54) 10 out of 10. (6:59) Ah, but the problem is, is that people are like, well, if you like Steve Jobs, you must be into toxic leadership.(7:06) I don't think everything the man did was great. (7:08) I think the fruitarian thing was dumb as shit. (7:10) Like there's a lot of stuff that I think was unintelligent, but I do love the visionary and I love, I do think Apple is magnificent what they've accomplished.(7:18) So it's not all or nothing. (7:19) We're all a warning and an example, but I see you and this is why it's so hard. (7:26) Every company has its own community and you have to.(7:32) It's a tribe. (7:33) There's a book I'm reading called Tribal Leadership. (7:35) There are unwritten rules.(7:37) Next level university, we'll give them to you because we want to be transparent. (7:40) Here are the unwritten rules of next level university. (7:43) You have goals and dreams.(7:45) You are a good person and you're heart-driven. (7:47) You want to lift others up. (7:49) You are not a spoiled fucking brat who wants huge rewards for minimal effort.(7:53) You are not a bully who tears other people down to feel bigger about yourself. (7:56) You are consistent as fuck. (7:59) Like I can keep going.(8:00) There's a whole bunch more. (8:01) You have a growth mindset, not a fixed mindset. (8:03) There's so many unwritten rules to being a part of this show.(8:07) I actually, the reason this episode came up is because I've been watching a lot of CrossFit lately. (8:14) And the reason I'm watching CrossFit isn't because I want to be a CrossFitter. (8:17) And I had a moment when I was with Amelia because we have this huge 115-inch projector.(8:20) I wake up in the morning, we crank pre-workout, we're getting ready for the gym and I'm watching these animals go to work. (8:26) And it's fucking awesome. (8:27) Girls, guys, they are just animals.(8:31) Some of these CrossFitters are fucking animals. (8:34) It's unbelievable what they can do, man. (8:36) It is.(8:36) Climbing ropes. (8:38) It's fucking crazy. (8:40) And it's inspiring as hell.(8:43) But then, in the middle of the motivational video, I'll see them crawling on their hands across a field. (8:49) And I'll talk to Amelia and I'll be like, that's kind of fucking stupid. (8:53) You know, first of all, how are your wrists not snapping off?(8:56) Honestly. (8:56) But number two, I'm not going to crawl across a field on my hands. (9:00) And here's the problem with tribes.(9:01) It's very hard to not be a part of all of it. (9:04) So you join a CrossFit gym and all of a sudden you have the same knee sleeves. (9:09) You're all eating paleo.(9:10) You're all, it's like, um, you asked me one time, what's the difference between movies and film? (9:16) I said, nothing. (9:18) When you talk film, people know that you're into film.(9:22) If you say a movie, it's a tell. (9:23) You're a snob.

Alan Lazaros

(9:24) I love movies.

Kevin Palmieri

(9:25) No, I'm a film lover. (9:26) Yeah. (9:27) You're a fucking film snob is what the difference is.(9:29) Well, I'm a foodie. (9:30) What the fuck are you talking about? (9:32) The truth is, again, we all have these identities.(9:37) And it's important to, for the point of this episode, is not to villainize. (9:42) That's not my point. (9:43) You need to identify with certain things in order to do certain processes in order to achieve your goals.(9:51) Okay. (9:51) So I have a goal to be a freak athlete. (9:53) I'm talking 5k on a whim in under 20 minutes.(9:57) I'm talking strong. (9:58) I'm talking athletic. (9:59) Like when I have children, I want to play sports with them and then be like, what in the actual fuck?(10:04) Like, how are you 60? (10:05) Right. (10:06) That's my goal.(10:07) So there you go. (10:09) CrossFit is very motivating for that because they're very well-rounded athletes. (10:13) They run, they swim, they bike, they climb, they lift compound movements.(10:18) It's unbelievable. (10:19) They also crawl on their hands. (10:20) So it's like, you got to treat everything kind of like a buffet.(10:22) The problem is the subconscious and unconscious tribal mind doesn't. (10:26) So if you want to be a part of NLU, the NLU team, and I don't think people talk about this. (10:32) You can't be on the NLU team and have low work ethic.(10:35) We have one person I'm thinking of who I want to come on the team. (10:39) And you might be listening. (10:40) I want you on the team.(10:41) She's freaked out. (10:44) She's like, I'm scared. (10:45) I don't think I deserve to be on the team.(10:48) And it's like, honestly, I know why you're freaked out. (10:51) We work every fucking day. (10:53) Like always.(10:54) You don't have to work 10 hour days every day, but you have to be plugged in at least once a day. (10:59) We are a daily 0.1% improvement podcast. (11:03) And that's our culture.(11:04) That's our company. (11:05) That's our tribe. (11:06) And so whether it comes back to, okay, what does it mean to be Japanese?(11:10) What does it mean to be American? (11:11) What does it mean to be a CrossFitter? (11:13) What does it mean to be into UFC?(11:14) The meaning changes. (11:16) But a lot of times the goals we have are not aligned with the tribes we're in. (11:22) I didn't want to lose all my friends.(11:24) I had to. (11:25) Why? (11:26) Because all of them are drinking in someone's basement every weekend.(11:29) Like I used to identify as someone who partied. (11:34) And then I started to identify as a fitness competitor and a fitness model and a fitness coach. (11:40) And then I started to identify as a business owner and I started losing my physique.(11:44) And it was like, oh shit. (11:46) Oh shit. (11:48) Yeah, I'm in shape compared to other business owners.(11:51) But that ain't it for me. (11:53) Kev started getting a dad bod. (11:54) I started saying that we are going to call the podcast Dad Bod University.(11:58) I'm not kidding. (11:59) I was freaked out. (12:00) But the point I'm making is that's why we call it Next Level University.(12:05) Because I want to identify as someone who's next fucking level. (12:09) Always. (12:10) 24-7, 365.(12:11) Let's go. (12:12) And if I can't be myself on Next Level University, I don't know where I can. (12:16) And so at the end of the day, obviously, I've thought a little bit about this.(12:19) I would say so. (12:20) I think that's also why I try to have a very small circle because I don't know. (12:28) I feel like I just want to keep it simple.(12:33) Yeah, it's good. (12:34) Superpower. (12:34) I just want to keep it simple.(12:36) And I want to stay focused on the things that matter. (12:38) And I was afraid golf was going to rub off on you. (12:42) It did.(12:43) I didn't tell you this, but at least I didn't say it in this way. (12:47) I was afraid of you becoming a part of that tribe because their whole thing is work less, earn more. (12:53) But I'm that's I'm never going to.(12:54) I know. (12:55) I now realize you're you and you. (12:57) But I did fall in love.(12:58) Avoid. (12:58) Yeah, no, I know. (12:59) I did.(13:00) I did fall in love for sure. (13:01) But I was like, oh, no, he's going to start fucking out, earn more, work less. (13:06) I want to be the most successful person on every golf course I'm on every time that if I'm going to play golf, I want to be the most successful person.(13:12) I want to be the most in love. (13:13) I want to be the healthiest and I want to be the wealthiest in every every fucking golf and the best at golf. (13:18) No, that's not going to happen.(13:20) No, I'm not doing this to be the best that I'm doing this because, you know, no, but I can I can see how somebody might say, like, wait, Europe's your like you fell in love with it. (13:29) Now you're going to get really good. (13:30) No, no, no, no, I'm not going to get that good.(13:34) I don't have time. (13:35) I don't have time. (13:36) It's not the priority.(13:37) It's one of the ways I like to R&R for sure. (13:40) But I, I feel like I'm really good at visiting and then realizing like, ah, that's not where I want to move. (13:46) I don't want to move my house there.(13:47) That's just not that's where you want to move your house. (13:51) Next level, baby. (13:53) Yeah.(13:53) Nowhere really. (13:55) Yeah. (13:55) I feel like Kevin and I didn't fit in anywhere.

Alan Lazaros

(13:58) Yeah.

Kevin Palmieri

(13:58) So we were like, hey, let's make our own. (14:00) I would say so. (14:01) Yeah.(14:02) And that's really everyone that's available to all of you, everyone out there listening or watching. (14:06) You can around your core values. (14:09) It might be where you can join in on.(14:11) We're all parts of different communities. (14:13) Of course, that's one of the reasons I got so upset after the MeToo movement, all these fucking assholes. (14:16) It's like I loved film.(14:18) All my heroes growing up. (14:19) Seriously, what the fuck, guys? (14:21) God damn it.(14:22) Like, it's so depressing. (14:23) Just like you with UFC. (14:24) It's so depressing.(14:26) And it's like it's like a part of you dies inside because it's like I used to belong here. (14:32) Maybe it was based on distortion or delusion, but at least I felt like I had a sense of longing. (14:36) And now it's like, God damn it.(14:38) Right. (14:38) So you got to make your own. (14:39) I think that's part of growing up is you, you plant your flag inside and then you build your life and design your life around it.(14:46) And then other people are a part of that. (14:48) And like, we've got evolved ventures. (14:49) We've got next level university.(14:51) We've got the conscious couples. (14:52) What does it mean to be a conscious couple? (14:54) It means you're off autopilot.(14:56) It means you're not toxic. (14:57) It means you check in. (14:58) It means you're consistent.(14:59) It means you do gratitudes. (15:01) I think it's, you just got to align your goals with your communities. (15:04) You have to, that's, this is also known as your reference group.(15:07) Harvard study one time said 94% of your success or failure in life comes down to your reference group. (15:12) Who are you comparing to unconsciously? (15:14) Kevin compares to me.(15:15) I compare to him. (15:16) I'm going to have to practice golf now. (15:17) I'm joking.(15:18) I'm not gonna. (15:20) Um, but yeah, we, everything would go off the rails. (15:23) Cause you are like the most obsessive.(15:25) That's why I can't do it. (15:26) We'd be in trouble. (15:27) I had the moment in my head.(15:28) I was like, I could fucking beat him at golf. (15:30) I was like, don't you dare. (15:31) I mean, that would be, yeah, you could beat me at golf and then we lose a life right there.(15:36) So that's what we call a short term w longterm. (15:38) That's why I didn't play college. (15:40) Allen's out here getting holes in one where everything's burning down behind the scenes.(15:45) We don't even know it. (15:46) We don't need that. (15:47) So yeah, this is, this is one of those episodes, I think to reflect on when you change, everything changes.(15:52) And when you change what you want from your community changes and when your community changes, that might not be in alignment with you. (15:57) And I'm, I'm not the guy to tell you what that means to you. (16:01) Just like you're not the one to tell me what it means to me.(16:03) I think it takes reflection. (16:05) And I thought a lot about this UFC thing. (16:07) I've thought a lot about it.(16:09) It's been something I've thought about very often over the last six months or so. (16:13) And I definitely, to your point, it makes me sad. (16:16) I mean, what's the meaning?(16:18) What's the meaning you have a BMW. (16:19) What does it mean to be a BMW owner? (16:22) Prick?(16:23) Mostly people think that for sure. (16:24) People think, but at the end of the day, that that's meaning every, every brand is oriented around meaning. (16:30) Let me tell you a joke real quick.(16:31) Yeah. (16:32) Okay. (16:32) Somebody said when I used to work at the gas station, somebody says to me, they said, what's the difference between a rose and a BMW?(16:38) And I said, I have no idea what you're talking about. (16:41) And they said on the rose, the prick is on the outside. (16:44) And I was like, Whoa, that's fire.(16:46) Now I have a BMW. (16:48) Now I have a BMW. (16:49) I promise.(16:50) I'm nice. (16:50) I tip well. (16:51) I'm not that guy.(16:53) I promise. (16:54) What does it mean to be a prick? (16:55) I'm kidding.(16:56) We're not doing that right now, but meaning, if nothing else comes into this episode, I hope everyone reflects on meaning. (17:02) Like, what does it mean to listen to this show? (17:04) What does it mean to have an iPhone?(17:06) What does it mean to you to, you know, you ever hear the company Zappos? (17:10) Of course. (17:11) Yeah.(17:11) Well, they do a really good job of community, Nike, honor, great athletes, Michael Jordan, the whole thing. (17:18) Like, what does it mean to be, to wear Nike's versus Under Armour versus whatever?

Alan Lazaros

(17:22) Apple.

Kevin Palmieri

(17:23) Apple is a good example.

Alan Lazaros

(17:24) Exactly.

Kevin Palmieri

(17:25) Brand is identity and identity is brand. (17:28) A brand is a company's identity. (17:29) I'll get off the company in a second, but your identity determines your process.(17:34) Your process determines your goal, but they're all connected. (17:36) So when you get around a new community, you're going to have new goals. (17:39) When you have new goals, you'll design new processes when you have, so make sure your community supports the lifestyle.(17:45) That's the by-product of the goals you want real quick, real quick, just to add before we get out of here. (17:49) Somebody asked me something recently. (17:51) I don't remember what it was.(17:52) It was about friends and that type of thing. (17:54) And I said, you know what I think is bullshit. (17:55) You know, the whole bro code thing of like, Hey man, I'm going to do something.(17:59) Don't tell anybody. (17:59) I think all that is, is it's an agreement amongst people with not great characters that they can have not great characters around each other. (18:09) Yeah.(18:09) And I think that's why your community is so important. (18:11) Here's one reason your community is so important. (18:13) It dictates what is allowed with the people around you.(18:17) A hundred percent. (18:18) That is something. (18:18) Imagine if I said bros before hoes, man, no terrible idea.(18:22) Emilia comes first. (18:23) A hundred percent. (18:24) I care about what she thinks more than I care about what you think.(18:26) Same, same. (18:28) And also Alan is not saying Emilia is a hoe. (18:30) It's just the same.

Alan Lazaros

(18:31) No, no, no, no.

Kevin Palmieri

(18:32) I just want to, I just want to make sure because we took a pretty hard left there. (18:36) I want to make sure we get right.

Alan Lazaros

(18:38) Thank you so much for the disclaimer.

Kevin Palmieri

(18:39) But dude, the point is, is all of that shit. (18:43) We got to rise above it, baby. (18:45) You and I had a conversation one time and we were like, we don't, we're not, we don't say shit like this anymore.(18:49) We don't watch movies like this anymore where it's time to grow the fuck up. (18:53) And we're better than that. (18:54) And there are some people that they would be like, no man, I, I want to, I want to stay here.(19:00) Okay. (19:01) I can't. (19:02) So if you want to stay there, you can stay there.(19:04) I got to keep going. (19:06) And I am proud of you for that. (19:07) By the way, of all the things you've ever done or accomplished, I would say that's the thing that I'm most grateful for that.(19:12) What just, you wanted to get away from anything toxic. (19:17) I just want to be a good man. (19:18) I, well, I told you, you know, basically I said this to Kevin once I'm being playful with this.(19:24) So don't take this out of context, but I basically said, if I'm ever disrespectful or toxic, please call me out. (19:30) Otherwise shut your fucking mouth. (19:32) I'm joking, but that's hilarious.(19:34) Right. (19:34) Seriously. (19:35) Because at the end of the day, I need to be me, but I don't want to be toxic or disrespectful.(19:40) Right. (19:40) And, and that's really the focus is how do I help people achieve their goals without being toxic? (19:46) You and I have had many, many, many, and this is one of the things I value so much about our relationship.(19:50) We have had so many challenging conversations behind the scenes about like, Hey, I got to level this up. (19:55) You got to level this up. (19:56) And a lot of it's been like, just, we have to be better people forever.(20:00) And that's, that's what we aspire to do. (20:02) And I understand that might sound dumb, whatever. (20:04) I don't care.(20:04) Whatever it sounds like to you, it can sound like to you. (20:06) It means it's deeply meaningful to me. (20:08) And that's, that's something I aspire.(20:10) Somebody asked me, what's your legacy? (20:11) Don't, I don't even fucking care to be a good person. (20:13) I want you to remember me as a good person.(20:15) That's it. (20:15) That's as far as I've thought, let me just be a good person. (20:18) That's it.(20:18) That's my legacy. (20:19) Then it's like, what does it mean to be a good person? (20:21) Right.(20:21) And then that goes, and usually I'm like, we should do an episode on that at some point. (20:24) I got to go. (20:24) Usually it's like, I got to go.(20:26) Usually that's what I say at that. (20:29) Yeah. (20:29) All right.(20:30) If you are looking to improve, increase, evolve your community, we have a bunch, whether it's Next Level Nation, our private Facebook group, whether it's the book club every single Saturday at 1230 Eastern time, whether it's the monthly masterclasses that Alan is running, we have a bunch and everything we just said is free. (20:56) There's plenty of community here and we are all on the same wavelength of the way we think. (21:02) We all want to get a little bit better every day, whatever that means to you.(21:04) That is our community. (21:06) Of all the things we've accomplished, I am very proud of the community we've built. (21:09) We have communities and sub communities.(21:11) We've got a fitness group. (21:12) If you need people around you that are aspirational, that believe in themselves, that believe in you, that are supportive, that are going to give you some challenge to and help you be consistent, this is the place for you.
