Kevin Palmieri
(0:00) At the end of the day, you talk to yourself more than you talk to any other human being walking this planet, and you ask yourself a lot of questions. (0:08) And I think some of the questions are really good and really powerful, and they help you stay on track, and other questions take you off track. (0:15) Today, we're going to talk about the positive kind.
Alan Lazaros
(0:17) Thinking is asking and answering intelligent questions, and the questions you ask yourself are very much keeping you on track towards your goals or not. (0:28) Welcome to Next Level University.

Kevin Palmieri
(1:17) Next Level Nation today for episode number 2,218, the top three questions that help us stay on track. (1:25) So essentially, if it was a real title, it'd be the top three questions we ask ourselves that help us stay on track towards success. (1:33) Too long.(1:34) Oh, I can already tell people aren't going to like mine. (1:37) I would have bet that to begin with. (1:40) Let's just get into it.(1:42) Let's do it.
Alan Lazaros
(1:43) What's number one? (1:44) Quick shout out, though. (1:44) Please.(1:47) One of our clients, Philip, just interviewed me earlier. (1:51) Philip, if you're listening, he's listened to hundreds of episodes of our show.
Kevin Palmieri
(1:54) Philip doesn't miss. (1:55) Also, Philip, congrats. (1:56) 500,000 listens as of today.
Alan Lazaros
(1:59) I know. (1:59) He said that. (2:00) It's awesome.
Kevin Palmieri
(2:00) That's a big dub. (2:02) That's huge.
Alan Lazaros
(2:03) So he was frustrated with you. (2:07) He said, Kev says he doesn't know any engineers. (2:10) How fucking dare him?(2:11) He knows me.
Kevin Palmieri
(2:12) Yeah, it's fair.
Alan Lazaros
(2:13) So me and Philip talked earlier. (2:15) We talked about meta skills, skills, and sub skills. (2:18) And meta skills is really thinking, which is the questions you're asking yourself.(2:21) So that's why I wanted to open with that is. (2:23) Shout out to you, Philip. (2:23) And number two is the questions you're asking yourself are definitely critical.(2:29) Let's get into it. (2:30) Do you have your first one? (2:32) I do.
Kevin Palmieri
(2:34) Also, Philip, you see that 335 pound squat today? (2:36) That was for you, buddy. (2:38) All right.(2:38) Is he in my group?
Alan Lazaros
(2:39) I don't even think he's in.
Kevin Palmieri
(2:40) No, he's not. (2:41) And he has his own.
Alan Lazaros
(2:42) Philip has his own fitness group.
Kevin Palmieri
(2:44) Then how would he have seen that on social media? (2:48) Oh, I didn't know it was on social. (2:49) Of course it is.
Alan Lazaros
(2:50) If it's doesn't, if it's not on social media, it doesn't even count. (2:52) It's not even real. (2:53) It doesn't exist.(2:55) You're the one who told me you don't post things on social media that you also post in private groups. (2:59) It's supposed to be private content.
Kevin Palmieri
(3:01) No, this is different groups. (3:02) No, no. (3:02) Why is that different?(3:04) Facebook group, WhatsApp group. (3:06) Same shit. (3:07) No, WhatsApp group is for accountability.(3:10) It's for accountability. (3:12) I can put that anywhere. (3:13) I don't, I have done it.(3:15) I've posted it. (3:15) Erroneous. (3:16) Yeah.(3:16) Okay, fine. (3:17) Let's just move on. (3:18) Yeah.(3:19) Let's move on with our lives. (3:21) We'll talk about it. (3:22) We're not going to talk about it.(3:23) Number one, I'm curious to see where you're going to go. (3:28) Number one for me is how is your to-do list moving? (3:32) Whoa.(3:32) Yeah. (3:33) If my to-do list is not moving, I am in trouble. (3:36) But when I am on track every day, I am hammering things off that.(3:41) Nice. (3:42) That is my number one. (3:44) I do.(3:44) I, a lot of people out there villainize to-do lists. (3:47) My to-do list is my guiding star in the darkness of my life.
Alan Lazaros
(3:52) First of all, lists are amazing. (3:54) I agree. (3:55) Lists.(3:56) We have checklists. (3:57) We have SOPs that might as well just be checklists. (4:02) We have onboarding checklists.(4:04) We have offboarding checklists. (4:05) We have to-do lists. (4:06) We have most important tasks lists.(4:08) We have lists are the way. (4:10) I did not know that's where you were going to go. (4:13) I'm curious.(4:14) My first one is the one that you already know is coming. (4:17) What's the best use? (4:18) What's the most valuable use of my time right now?(4:21) That is the dominant question that is always, always, always going, which is why when Kevin goes off on a side tangent that I find useless, if you watch us on YouTube, you'll see my eyes start to go, okay, what's the fucking point here? (4:34) I'm obviously joking, but that question, seriously, it is always going. (4:38) It must have been a long eight years for you.(4:41) Most of them you have a point. (4:43) Most of them.
Kevin Palmieri
(4:44) I always have a point. (4:45) Most of the time.
Alan Lazaros
(4:45) It's whether or not it's valuable. (4:47) Yeah.
Kevin Palmieri
(4:47) I always have a point, just whether or not it actually matters or not. (4:50) Okay. (4:51) I feel like that's, I've heard you say that before.(4:53) Yeah. (4:53) I don't know if you're going to have heard any of mine. (4:56) Honestly.(4:57) Second, it's alarming. (4:59) Yeah. (5:00) Or I feel like I just understand myself more now.(5:04) Yeah. (5:04) You've evolved a lot. (5:06) Second one.(5:07) This is going to be laughable. (5:10) Do you feel like a bodybuilder? (5:12) That's number two for me.
Alan Lazaros
(5:15) Oh my God. (5:17) Yeah. (5:19) When I feel like laughing at Kevin, a little bit, a little bit, a little bit, but he also called it first.(5:26) You can't say it's going to be laughable and then get upset with me laughing.
Kevin Palmieri
(5:29) Well, I thought I was setting the bar high and you might not laugh at all. (5:31) Went the other way.
Alan Lazaros
(5:32) When I thought about it, it's just, shouldn't the second one be about the business maybe? (5:37) So, well, here's the thing.
Kevin Palmieri
(5:39) I had five because we were going to do five and I was like, I don't know if we're going to have time to do five each. (5:43) So I'm probably going to do all five of mine because I'm much more short winded. (5:47) I take this shit seriously.(5:50) You know what I mean?
Alan Lazaros
(5:51) Awesome. (5:51) I'm glad you had enough time today to prep. (5:53) I did.
Kevin Palmieri
(5:54) No, no, I literally did this in the 18 minutes you were late.
Alan Lazaros
(5:58) My second one is where are you fucking up right now? (6:03) It's a positive one. (6:04) And to do a little side tangent of that one, it's, it's where are you fucking up the most?(6:10) That's a good question because that gets you to the root of the biggest bottleneck. (6:16) So the answers aren't great, but the questions, it's going to get you to where your biggest bottleneck is. (6:22) Like if you really ask, where are you fucking up the most right now?(6:25) You might as well be asking your brain, Hey, what's the biggest bottleneck?
Kevin Palmieri
(6:28) Where are you fucking up the most?
Alan Lazaros
(6:38) So this is, this is, that was a long pause. (6:42) This is why these questions are so important because they take time.
Kevin Palmieri
(6:46) Yeah.
Alan Lazaros
(6:46) I had a whole bunch of things come up, but none of them are the, the answer yet. (6:53) I will come up with it. (6:54) I need to redesigning other people's lives more than my own hands down.(7:00) Coaching other people more than I coach you for sure. (7:03) I thought about that earlier. (7:04) I was like, I gave you 18 minutes to redesign your life.(7:09) And you're the most, yeah, it was bad. (7:11) I was so sad. (7:13) But I had to, dude, I, you know, since traveling last week, I just got the home fully set up.(7:18) I'm just now getting back to all cylinders. (7:20) You know, I understand. (7:21) Yeah, of course.(7:22) And you, you know, I've asked you in advance, like permission to be imperfect, being perfect. (7:27) So we're good. (7:28) But I had that moment of, of all the people I coach on success.(7:34) Kevin's the most important for sure. (7:37) You know, because you, me coaching you moves the needle more than me coaching anyone else. (7:42) And it's just brutal that that doesn't get prioritized.(7:46) So I just redesigned my life a bit. (7:50) I'm excited to see what fruit that bears.
Kevin Palmieri
(7:55) My third point is essentially the same. (7:57) What's been slipping is my, what's been slipping. (7:59) Like, what, what are you just unconsciously not focused on that?(8:04) You know, you should be right now. (8:06) It's my, my relationship for sure. (8:08) I have not, I literally messaged her last night.(8:10) She was away for the week and I was like, Hey, can I take you on a date Sunday? (8:13) I haven't taken her on a date in a fucking minute. (8:15) I'm out here fucking up.(8:16) Nice. (8:17) For sure. (8:17) For sure.(8:18) I'm out here fucking up. (8:18) Not nice that you haven't taken her on a date, but nice that you're gonna, I asked myself that last night. (8:23) It was like, oh my God, I'm fucking Jeff.(8:24) You're always Jeff and something. (8:26) Always. (8:27) But it's just, I'm not thinking that is delusional.(8:30) We're going to do an episode on that. (8:32) So that one definitely to me doesn't count.
Alan Lazaros
(8:34) So the first one, I just want to give a caveat here for anyone out there watching or listening. (8:40) If you already struggle to just, so zero to 10 zero is you struggle to just get out of bed. (8:50) Do not ask the first question.(8:53) Where am I fucking up right now? (8:54) That's not constructive. (8:56) I think of it this way.(8:58) There was a day last week when I was down and out and I, and I had this perspective of, okay, this is, I haven't been here in a while. (9:06) Like I can't get out of freaking bed. (9:08) This is bad.(9:09) And obviously I'm exaggerating. (9:10) I got out of bed and I did what I had to do, but it was tough. (9:14) I was burnt out from that drive.(9:18) If you're a zero to one, two or three on the confidence scale and your current state resourcefulness, you definitely don't want your dominant question to be, where are you fucking up right now? (9:30) When you start to pass five and you're like confident at six, seven, eight, nine, 10, you really do need to be asking those questions. (9:37) So it's all state dependent.(9:39) So it's almost like these three questions that I give are when I'm in a pretty good state. (9:46) When I'm in an empowered state, the last thing I need is where I'm at. (9:49) Alan, where are you doing awesome right now?(9:51) Who gives a shit? (9:53) Honestly, that's not it for me. (9:54) But when I was down and out last week, I had to flip the script and go, Alan, what have you done?(10:01) Well, well, you did just drive all the way from Massachusetts to South Carolina. (10:04) You haven't missed a coaching session in fucking years. (10:06) Like you got to stack the W.(10:08) So I think that I flipped the record, the record playing depending on my state pretty, pretty quickly.
Kevin Palmieri
(10:15) Can I ask you a question? (10:17) This came up for me as you were saying that the reason I said to you, I don't think you would have guessed any of these is because as I've gotten more confidence, the questions have changed. (10:27) This is a good conversation because you, if you started out there, it would be terrible.
Alan Lazaros
(10:32) Where are you slipping?
Kevin Palmieri
(10:33) Everywhere.
Alan Lazaros
(10:33) Everywhere.
Kevin Palmieri
(10:34) It's, it's. (10:34) It wouldn't even be that. (10:35) It's not constructive.(10:36) It's not. (10:37) The better question would be where am I actually making progress? (10:40) Not where am I slipping?(10:41) Because I don't know. (10:41) I feel like everything is slipping. (10:42) I need to focus on to your point where I'm making progress.
Alan Lazaros
(10:44) Yeah, 100%.
Kevin Palmieri
(10:45) What is a question you would have asked yourself five years ago that you don't ask yourself anymore?
Alan Lazaros
(10:56) I don't know if my mind have changed at all. (10:58) Yeah, I don't think mine have changed at all. (11:01) There's a bunch of them.(11:03) Like, am I focusing more on efficiency than, than effectiveness? (11:07) That's one. (11:09) Or, okay, here's another one that I, this is my third.(11:12) This will be my third. (11:14) What is the leverage point? (11:18) What is the 20% of effort that produces 80% of the result?(11:21) My brain is always asking that question. (11:24) Always earlier when we were together for 18 minutes, it was in one of mine that came up as coaching you. (11:30) Like, what's the 20% of effort that's going to produce 80% of the results?(11:32) Like, if I coach you, that's way more valuable than coaching some random person. (11:38) Because you are a huge, yeah, of course, of course. (11:43) Short term, not at all, basically, which is the issue.(11:45) That's a whole nother conversation with another question of urgent versus important versus significant, blah, blah, blah. (11:51) But the Pareto principle states, this is a scientific fact. (11:55) 20% of effort produces 80% of results.(11:59) Maybe it's 1981. (12:01) Maybe it's 2179. (12:03) I don't care.(12:04) It is a thing. (12:05) And so, until you're sleeping well, hydrating well, training consistently and getting the right nutrition, don't worry about creatine. (12:13) Like, that's a good metaphor for what this is.(12:16) So, one of my dominant questions is, what's the top leverage point in this scenario? (12:22) What's going to make the biggest difference in this scenario? (12:25) So, that's my third.(12:28) My third is, where are you getting cocky? (12:32) Nice.
Kevin Palmieri
(12:33) Where are you getting cocky? (12:33) It happens. (12:34) It's always going to happen.(12:36) I think when things go, where am I? (12:39) I had a moment. (12:40) What was it?(12:42) I caught myself recently. (12:44) I was like, you stupid bastard. (12:46) Nice.(12:47) I don't remember what it was, though.
Alan Lazaros
(12:50) Clients. (12:51) You got a lot of clients lately?
Kevin Palmieri
(12:57) No, I think it was, you know, I don't know. (13:00) Sometimes, sometimes it's like, it's more, since I believe in myself so much more than I used to, I'll like take something on. (13:12) Yeah, I would say it was a client thing.(13:14) Somebody said like, hey, can you handle this? (13:16) And I was like, yeah, I should be able to do that this week. (13:17) I didn't even look at what they asked.(13:20) I had no fucking clue.
Alan Lazaros
(13:21) And then when I looked at it, I was like, oh no. (13:23) That's, that is what I, when you always thought I was overly optimistic. (13:28) Boom.
Kevin Palmieri
(13:28) Yeah.
Alan Lazaros
(13:29) I do. (13:29) I got a little cocky. (13:30) It was like, yeah, of course I can.
Kevin Palmieri
(13:31) Of course I can do it. (13:32) I've been doing a lot of stuff and I did. (13:34) I actually did it.(13:35) I did what I said, but, but the energy, the energy, but of course you can do it. (13:42) And you also have to make sure you keep yourself within the challenge, the challenge skills sweet spot. (13:46) So yeah, where are you getting cocky?(13:48) I like to ask myself that. (13:50) But again, that, that question has changed. (13:52) It's like, where can you believe in yourself more?(13:54) It used to be the question, right? (13:56) That's, that's evolved. (13:57) So that's my fourth.
Alan Lazaros
(13:58) Nice. (14:00) Where am I overly optimistic? (14:05) What am I afraid of in this situation?(14:10) Oh, one of my favorites. (14:13) What is the disempowering belief that has disguised itself as empowering? (14:17) That is one of my go-tos, but those aren't like regular.(14:21) I don't just throw out the day. (14:22) Oh, what is my disempowering belief that disguises itself as empowering? (14:25) Those are more of my check-in journaling, talking to Amelia when I'm in a present state thing.(14:32) But I think throughout the day, it's like, what are your three dominant ones? (14:36) And I think that for everyone listening, what are the three that come up all the time, the record playing? (14:40) And then what are the three that would be more constructive?(14:42) And then you have to practice them one at a time too. (14:46) You really have to practice the questions you ask yourself. (14:48) For sure.(14:49) You got to, I have questions. (14:50) I ask every client. (14:53) Um, what's one that I ask client?(14:55) If I had a camera on you, what would I be alarmed by? (14:57) And what would I be impressed by? (14:59) That is one of my fucking go-tos because always good stuff comes up.(15:03) I did that with Phillip earlier as well. (15:06) And, um, I said, creepiness aside, if I had a camera on you, but that's a good one too, is if someone had a camera on me, what would I be embarrassed by? (15:16) That's a good one.(15:17) That's a really good one.
Kevin Palmieri
(15:18) That's a really good one. (15:19) One, I haven't, questions are the answer. (15:21) One, I have not locked in yet.(15:24) I think I said this on the podcast. (15:27) Anytime I am getting ready to do something I don't necessarily want to do. (15:31) I say, what are 10 positives about this?(15:34) What are 10 positives about this that I'm just not willing to look at yet? (15:37) That's super helpful for me. (15:40) Super helpful.(15:42) It's not like day-to-day stuff. (15:43) Like, oh, I got to do this, this thing, or I have to write this. (15:45) It's not that it's more like big things.(15:48) What are the 10 positives of this perceived negative? (15:52) And you can do the same thing. (15:54) What are the 10 negatives of this perceived positive?
Alan Lazaros
(15:58) Here's another one. (15:59) What can I get rid of? (16:01) Always, that's a dominant one.(16:03) What can I get rid of? (16:04) I need to delete something. (16:08) Essentialism.(16:08) What can I get rid of? (16:09) I donated a bunch of shit yesterday. (16:11) I donated.(16:12) I put it in a donation pile that eventually will be donated. (16:18) But every time we get back from travel, there's a bunch of shit that I realize I don't fully need. (16:23) I'll give you a tiny example.(16:26) I talked about my new razor. (16:28) It has a bunch of little fixings and all that. (16:30) Okay, I've used it now for three months.(16:31) It's a buzzer, not a razor. (16:34) I realize after three months of using it, I'm not going to use half of these little dude eggs. (16:39) All the different sizes.(16:41) It's like, okay, no, I use these three. (16:42) I'm going to can all the rest of it. (16:44) Just get it out of my goddamn life.(16:45) Life is too fucking overwhelming to keep a bunch of extra shit. (16:49) I'm telling you. (16:51) And then, yeah, you're right.(16:52) Five fucking months from now, I'm going to be like, I really wish I had that little thingy thing. (16:56) Yeah, there's a risk. (16:57) A lot of people are very hoarder.(17:00) And hoarding is an actual thing. (17:02) But that's not what I'm saying. (17:04) Zero to ten.(17:05) I know a lot of people that keep shit just for no reason. (17:09) It feels good to get rid of stuff. (17:11) You got to get rid of stuff.(17:13) You got to. (17:13) It feels so good to just empty out your fucking life of all the bullshit that you're dragging up a hill. (17:19) And if you're not constantly essentializing clothing.(17:22) I had a shirt that I have these long-sleeve shirts that I've been wearing for three or four years. (17:27) They're like six bucks each. (17:29) And I just don't like them anymore.(17:31) Because now I actually have muscle mass. (17:32) Before they were great. (17:33) Now they're tight as hell.(17:34) I can't fucking move. (17:36) And I'm like, you know what? (17:38) I'm not going to wear these fucking things anymore.(17:40) So I just donated them. (17:41) Awesome. (17:42) Out of my life.(17:43) I'm going to walk into my closet every day for the next year and go, hmm. (17:47) I wonder if I should wear that long-sleeve shirt. (17:49) No.(17:50) It's like open tabs in a website browser. (17:53) You can't have 50 tabs open. (17:55) You gotta have just a couple.
Kevin Palmieri
(17:55) Alan will grab my phone when we're together. (17:57) And he's like, you mind if I clean your phone up real quick? (17:59) Yeah, man.(18:00) Do it. (18:00) And he's just, boop, boop. (18:01) Gotta clean all this up.(18:02) Swipe, swipe, swipe, swipe. (18:03) How many you got open? (18:04) Oh, I can't even tell you right now.
Alan Lazaros
(18:05) Just one.
Kevin Palmieri
(18:06) How do I know?
Alan Lazaros
(18:08) 21 minutes, 36 seconds.
Kevin Palmieri
(18:09) I got about a doz. (18:11) You do? (18:11) Yeah, 100%.(18:12) Or photos. (18:16) Facebook Messenger. (18:17) Check that out.(18:18) I see that. (18:20) I honestly think that my phone is a really good representation. (18:24) I think all of our phones are really good representations of ourselves.(18:26) I am a fucking, I'm all over the place. (18:28) I'm like a bouncy ball, man. (18:30) You would be freakishly alarmed at how much task switching I do.(18:36) Throughout the day. (18:37) Literally today, I had to do something that required me to upload a video in order to get a transcript. (18:42) While that happened, I switched to something else.(18:44) I jumped back in to upload it to the thing to get the transcript. (18:48) Then I got five things done. (18:52) I operate really well in madness.(18:56) I don't know. (18:57) Last thing before we go. (18:59) Favorite question of all, why?(19:02) I had a coaching call with somebody today. (19:04) They asked me a question and I said, why do you care about that? (19:09) That matters.(19:09) Why do you want to do it in that way? (19:11) Why are you expecting it to go this way? (19:15) Why?(19:16) How? (19:16) How? (19:16) How does it connect to that?
Alan Lazaros
(19:18) Yeah, why and how? (19:19) Those are great questions. (19:20) Who, what, when, where, why, how?(19:21) Those are the main ones. (19:23) Who, what, when, where, why, how? (19:25) Okay, let's give a synopsis and then we'll go.(19:27) Yeah, wrap this up. (19:28) Well, I think we should give our top three because we just gave 50 questions instead of three.
Kevin Palmieri
(19:33) How's the to-do list moving? (19:35) Do you feel like a bodybuilder? (19:41) I mean...
Alan Lazaros
(19:42) Is Alan more jacked than me? (19:44) No, that's... (19:45) I didn't tell you to answer it.(19:47) What are we doing?
Kevin Palmieri
(19:48) I don't even ask myself.
Alan Lazaros
(19:49) This isn't about answers.
Kevin Palmieri
(19:49) I don't even ask myself that question. (19:53) Probably something along the lines of, am I tracking towards my income goal? (19:59) Like towards my growth goal is probably, but I know that's not necessarily...(20:04) It would be that. (20:05) How's the to-do... (20:06) My God.(20:06) How's the to-do list doing? (20:08) Do I feel like a bodybuilder? (20:09) How are we doing financially?(20:11) Those are the three for me.
Alan Lazaros
(20:17) What's the most valuable use of my time right now? (20:19) Has to be there. (20:23) And that shifts moment to moment, day to day.(20:27) Number two. (20:29) Yeah, where am I fucking up the most right now? (20:32) Or what am I fucking up the most right now?(20:36) Because it's not just where, it's what. (20:39) And you'll get a lot of answers on that one. (20:42) Number three, the leverage.(20:49) No, nope, no. (20:50) It has to be, what can I delete? (20:51) What can I get rid of?(20:52) Persons, places, things, and ideas. (20:54) You have to get rid of them. (20:56) If there's nothing else you take from this episode, what can I get rid of?(21:02) Will change your life so much. (21:06) Rather than, hey, should I go golfing with Kev? (21:13) Should I not?(21:14) Should I go golfing? (21:15) Should I not? (21:16) No, yeah, maybe.(21:17) No, I just don't. (21:18) I just don't golf with Kev. (21:19) Like it's done.(21:20) One decision, done. (21:22) I don't have to think about it. (21:23) And again, that's just an example.(21:25) But that changes your life when you just draw a line in the sand, like done. (21:30) And you don't have to concern yourself with it anymore. (21:32) You close tabs.(21:33) It's nice. (21:33) I wear the same-ish shirt. (21:36) I have several of the same shirt, but all different colors.(21:38) And it makes my life so much easier. (21:40) It's nice. (21:41) They all fit the same.(21:44) It's easy. (21:45) It's great. (21:46) So I'm always trying to simplify.(21:47) I think life is so complex. (21:49) So I think eliminating things will help people the most. (21:54) Out of everything we've done, I think eliminating things will help the most.(21:56) Being a human's hard. (21:58) It's a lot, man. (21:59) Especially 21st century, man.(22:00) It's crazy.
Kevin Palmieri
