Kevin Palmieri

(0:00) Yesterday we talked all about maximizing your potential and how success by definition doesn't really have a specific enough definition to use personally, and I think maximize potential is in the similar vein where I don't know what that means really in the grand scheme of things, so we're going to talk about that. (0:18) It sounds really cool to say I am going to reach my full potential. (0:24) Today we're going to talk about what that actually means in the real world.(0:28) Welcome to Next Level University. (0:31) I'm your host, Kevin Palmieri. (0:33) And I'm your co-host, Alan Lazarus.(0:36) At NLU, we believe in a heart-driven but no BS approach to holistic self-improvement for dream chasers. (0:43) Our goal with every episode is to help you level up your life, love, health, and wealth. (0:49) We bring you a new episode every single day on topics like confidence, self-belief, self-worth, self-awareness, relationships, boundaries, consistency, habits, and defining your own unique version of success.(1:05) Self-improvement in your pocket, every day, from anywhere, completely free. (1:12) Welcome to Next Level University. (1:17) Next Level Nation today for episode number 2,251, what does it mean to maximize your potential?(1:25) I want to start with a question, okay? (1:30) I'm going to make this about me, okay? (1:32) You know, rare occurrence, usually about you.(1:35) Let me make it about me, okay? (1:36) Yeah, sounds good. (1:37) When you first met me, how much do you think I wanted to maximize my potential versus how much do you think I want to maximize my potential today?(1:46) And how do you know the difference? (1:48) What a fire question that is. (1:50) That's a good question.(1:51) Kevin's in such a good mood. (1:53) I'm burning down behind the scenes, but I am, yeah, I'm in a good mood. (1:56) Kevin's swimming in opportunity, I love it.(1:59) The answer to your question is less than I thought at the time. (2:05) No, I would say probably, I don't know, this is probably not going to be kind, 10%. (2:10) I don't want kind, I want the truth.(2:13) Now I would say probably 60%. (2:15) That's it? (2:16) You bastard.

Alan Lazaros

(2:19) No, I'm just kidding.

Kevin Palmieri

(2:20) I asked Emilia one time, zero to 10, how much do you think I'm maxing out, you know, for my full potential? (2:29) She's like, eh, probably six. (2:32) Six out of 10.(2:33) Oh my god, yeah. (2:36) The truth is, I actually agree with her. (2:38) I feel like I'm not even close to max though.(2:40) I'm not joking. (2:42) Anyways, let's not make this about me, let's make this about the episode. (2:44) And by the way, it's not about you or me, it's about the listener.(2:46) I'm just teasing. (2:47) I know you are. (2:48) And I want to make that more clear because I think sometimes on our long tangents, and by our I mean mine, I'm going to say, it seems like it's about me, but it's not.(2:57) It's about the listener. (2:58) So I would say 10% when I first met you. (3:02) In hindsight, at the time, I thought it was a lot more than that.(3:05) And now I'd say probably 60%. (3:08) I did well at hiding it in the beginning for sure. (3:11) Yeah, which we all want to belong.(3:16) And so whoever you're around, you're going to mirror them a bit. (3:20) And I think you mirrored me a little bit. (3:22) For sure.(3:23) Yeah. (3:23) Well, I looked up to you. (3:24) I looked, I was like, oh, okay, this guy's got something special.(3:27) I got to fit in. (3:29) I appreciate it. (3:30) I think that's, people know.(3:32) Not that you would be unkind, but if I'm too different, there's no way this is going to mesh. (3:38) Yeah. (3:38) You know?(3:39) And I also think you wanted to want to reach your potential. (3:42) I think you still do. (3:45) I don't, I definitely do.(3:46) Wanting to, and then wanting to want to. (3:48) I also think you definitely want what comes with it. (3:51) I just don't know.(3:53) So I don't know if you saw, oh, you did. (3:55) Squatted 385 today. (3:57) I saw.(3:57) Creeping up. (3:58) Creeping up towards 405. (4:01) But am I going to give up dominoes?(4:03) No. (4:05) No, I'm not going to do it. (4:06) That didn't take him long.(4:07) Yeah. (4:08) I don't think I. (4:09) We did.(4:09) We gave it up. (4:10) I don't want to. (4:11) I haven't had it since.(4:12) Yeah. (4:13) You have ice cream and shit? (4:15) Oh yeah.(4:16) Uh, no. (4:18) Less than ever. (4:19) Not really.(4:19) I ate. (4:20) Geez, man. (4:20) Amelia's mother's birthday.(4:22) Yeah, brother. (4:22) I, we, we eat really well now. (4:24) We eat whole foods now.(4:25) It's, I'm not. (4:27) All right, listen. (4:28) I have these whole foods Reese's cups that I throw in the freezer.(4:32) They are, and the macros aren't great. (4:34) I don't care, but that's 10% of my diet. (4:38) Not even the other thing is the carving up the fruity pebbles.(4:42) Listen, I'm making myself look bad here. (4:44) There's a couple things that I have. (4:49) I will spend the rest of my life getting a little bit better every single day.(4:53) I just want to do that. (4:55) It's very hard for me not to improve things.

Alan Lazaros

(4:59) I don't eat perfectly.

Kevin Palmieri

(5:00) How do you know where you are? (5:02) Not you, the collective you, but how do you know like where you, cause I think I'm losing sight of that. (5:06) I don't, I feel like I'm awesome.(5:10) Quote unquote, I'm the most awesome quote unquote I've ever been. (5:14) You feel that way? (5:15) Yeah, for sure.(5:16) Nice. (5:17) For sure. (5:18) And I also thought I was awesome eight years ago, but I wasn't.(5:21) So I also know that's not true. (5:23) Well, it's all negative. (5:24) This is, this is, how do you know, how do you know where you are based on where you, if you don't know where you're going?(5:31) The statistics. (5:33) That's just why I send you, I send Kev a bunch of stats behind the scenes. (5:36) I send it to anyone I'm leading.(5:38) I try to send a bunch of updates. (5:40) So Germany just surpassed Japan and largest fourth largest economy, something like that. (5:47) I should know that.(5:48) It's US, then China, then India, then Germany, then Japan, I believe. (5:54) But anyways, why does that matter? (5:56) It helps you contextualize the world.(5:57) So to answer the question about potential, everything is relative. (6:01) So of course you're going to feel like in hindsight, you weren't maxing your potential, maximizing your potential. (6:10) Because compared to you now, you weren't, this is the compound effect.(6:14) It's very hard to explain, but I always use the iPhone as a metaphor. (6:19) The iPhone 16 pro max, the camera on this thing is better than what they shot Jaws with. (6:26) I had a friend of mine who did a feature film and the camera they used, he got to borrow it.(6:34) It was like 30 grand for this camera. (6:36) And it was the real effing deal. (6:40) And honestly, the iPhone is eventually going to have a camera that good.(6:43) It's just the law of innovation. (6:46) So I'm Alan version 3.7. Alan, in a week, I always round up. (6:52) People are like, you're not 37 yet.(6:53) I don't, in my head, I am. (6:55) I just am. (6:56) It's already done.(6:57) So Alan version 3.7, of course, is going to think Alan 2.7 was a mess. (7:03) But compared to other 27 year olds, I was actually very dialed in. (7:07) I have a question.(7:08) Yeah. (7:10) If you could only use one word. (7:12) And again, I'm really boxing in here, but I have a thought and I want to see what yours is.(7:17) If you could only use one word to focus on, to maximize your potential. (7:24) So like if I said, Alan is maximizing his potential because he is hyper focused on blank.

Alan Lazaros

(7:32) What would the blank be?

Kevin Palmieri

(7:33) Focus. (7:35) When I was going to be intention, when I was going to be intention. (7:38) Nice.(7:40) What you pay attention to dictates everything else. (7:44) That's why anyone who's listening to this show, you are so much better off. (7:48) It's not even close.(7:53) Like inputs is where everything starts. (7:55) What you pay attention to dictates everything else. (7:58) And that would be a whole nother episode.(8:01) But learning to control your focus changes, everything you say, think, do feel and believe everyone you surround yourself with persons, places, things, and ideas. (8:10) That's why in the past, you've sort of alluded to this. (8:14) When you used to get coached by me more consistently, you were more on track.(8:20) It's because I'm just forcing inputs. (8:23) I'm always making sure you're paying attention to the right stuff. (8:28) And by right stuff that's predicated on goals, right?(8:30) Do you believe somebody can maximize their potential more? (8:34) Let's just say even same, same gifts from life from the beginning. (8:41) You're not, you're not better than me, quote unquote, at a certain thing.(8:45) We're the same. (8:45) When we start, can somebody maximize their potential in less time than somebody else? (8:50) Yeah.(8:51) Which is, which is exactly it. (8:53) Now here's the deal. (8:54) People always say, well, you asked me one time, would you go back and change anything?(8:59) And my question to you was, do I still get to meet Amelia? (9:03) Yep. (9:03) And you said, yes.(9:05) I said, yeah, I'd change fucking everything. (9:07) I would, I made horrible mistakes. (9:09) So many.(9:11) If I don't get to meet Amelia, I'll do it all again. (9:14) Exact same. (9:16) That's the weird thing about the future.(9:18) And you change one thing and it ripples out. (9:20) And the whole, you've seen the butterfly effect with long time ago. (9:23) Very dark, scary.(9:24) Yeah. (9:24) Super dark. (9:26) Yeah.(9:26) Super dark. (9:27) But the, the butterfly effect, chaos theory, impact theory, all this stuff. (9:30) Did I just say impact theory?(9:32) I meant, um, constraint, constraint theory, game theory, game theory, game theory. (9:37) In game theory. (9:38) If you change one thing, it ripples out to change everything else.(9:43) One of the things that I find ironic is that the people who have the most regrets are the ones who make the best decisions. (9:48) Let me explain. (9:49) It's paradox.(9:50) I have so many regrets, more regrets than anyone you've ever, I talk, I have talked about my regrets more than anyone you've ever met. (9:58) True or false? (10:00) I would say true, but I don't know how much they actually, how much it actually affects you and how deeply you actually feel about your regrets.(10:07) Fair. (10:08) I think the only reason I talk about regret is because I'm smarter now. (10:14) So when you get smarter and smarter and smarter and you learn and learn and learn, you have distinctions you didn't have.(10:20) So you go back and reprocess your past from the higher sense of awareness and realize how many poor choices you made. (10:27) And people say, well, if you're grateful for where you've ended up, then why would you regret that? (10:32) No, no, no.(10:32) By that rationale, you should never get smarter. (10:37) But I understand what they're saying. (10:39) This is the point that I need to make.(10:42) All of what happened to me and the way I responded to it might have quote unquote needed to happen, but it didn't have to take so fucking long. (10:50) Like I, I, I didn't need four and a half years to figure out that wasn't it for me in the relationship. (10:56) Right.(10:56) So my point is, is all of us have to evolve and grow and we all have to fail forward and make mistakes. (11:02) No one has a perfect track record of decision making. (11:04) No one, no one.(11:06) However, how quickly do you upgrade? (11:09) And this is why AI scares people is AI learns quicker than humans. (11:14) And if you don't learn quickly, I mean, you and I just had a three hour long conversation that you couldn't possibly articulate in three minutes that has changed your life and your trajectory forever.(11:24) My job in this episode is to help everyone reach their full potential, knowing they'll never reach it, but they'll get way closer. (11:32) Listen to this for sure. (11:33) Because even you thinking about potential right now is better than all 99.9% of anything else you could possibly be learning or thinking about. (11:42) So to me, if I can control, that's why we do an episode a day. (11:47) It's we get to be in your pocket every single day, helping you focus on the right shit. (11:52) Yeah, it's heavy.(11:55) It's heavy. (11:57) What is it when you know better, you just don't want to do better? (12:06) You emotional immaturity.(12:08) You think that's what it is? (12:09) Yeah. (12:10) Isn't it choice?(12:14) Oh no, we're going down to fate and all that. (12:16) Yes and no. (12:17) I think we have an animal self, which is the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system.(12:22) It's the mammalian brain. (12:24) It's the, uh, no, it's the crocodile brain. (12:27) Then we have a childhood self, which is the mammalian brain.(12:31) And then we have a highest self, which is prefrontal cortex executive function. (12:35) You're, you know, that pizza is not best for your longevity. (12:39) Okay.(12:39) But your executive functioning knows that. (12:42) So you can calculate, okay, if I eat a ton of pizza every day, I'm going to feel like shit and, and potentially die younger than I would if I didn't. (12:48) Right.(12:49) But you, your childhood self doesn't want to give that up yet. (12:53) And by childhood self, I mean your emotional self. (12:55) It feels good to eat pizza.(12:56) And that's also a part of your identity and your belief system. (12:58) But I gave it all up. (12:59) You don't have, and this is the fucked up part.(13:02) This is why it's so hard to get people to grow. (13:05) Because dude, I didn't want to give up pizza either. (13:08) I just knew I had to, otherwise I couldn't reach my full potential.(13:11) So, well, by that rationale, why are you eating fruity pebbles? (13:14) Because it's fucking awesome. (13:17) Number one.(13:17) And number two, I'm carving up. (13:19) And number three, I'm probably going to eventually get rid of it. (13:21) That's the truth.(13:22) I just don't want to yet.

Alan Lazaros

(13:23) Goddamn.

Kevin Palmieri

(13:25) And by that rationale, here's what I would say to bring this home for everybody. (13:32) You have unique potential. (13:37) We are all human beings known as homo sapiens, but not all of us are the same breed.(13:47) Canine is dog. (13:48) There's 500 different breeds. (13:50) Some of us are Dalmatians.(13:52) Some of us are Great Danes. (13:53) Some of us are Chihuahuas. (13:55) I don't know what you are.(13:56) Only you know what you are when no one's watching. (13:59) But I do know each of us are uniquely suited and have natural inclinations towards certain things. (14:07) And we have a certain upbringing and past that makes us uniquely suited for certain things.(14:16) So everyone out there right now watching or listening, in 2025, November, you are uniquely suited for something better than me. (14:25) And I am uniquely suited for something better than you. (14:28) The key in life, I think, is figuring out what that is and then contributing to the world in a way that's meaningful for you to try to make the world a better place.(14:38) And this is why I struggle with spoiled brats and bullies, because they aren't making the world a better place. (14:42) They're not even neutral. (14:43) They're actually making it worse.(14:45) And not only are they not reaching their full potential, they're actually hurting other people from reaching their full potential. (14:52) If we did live in a world where everyone got a little better every day and everyone tried to get a little better, everyone would be healthier, wealthier, and more in love. (14:59) That's a mathematical fact.(15:02) I'm not saying everyone's going to do it, but I either give up and say, screw it, and be nihilistic and hopeless, or I say, okay, this is what I'm uniquely suited to do in the world, and I'm going to lead by example. (15:15) And the truth is, Emilia Smith, my beautiful girlfriend and future wife, she is the one who has catalyzed me giving up pizza. (15:25) Giving up pizza, her and I had a simple discussion.(15:30) No one wants to give up pizza. (15:31) Pizza's awesome, right? (15:33) Now, don't get me twisted.(15:35) I have a flatbread five cheese thing from Whole Foods that's pretty much pizza. (15:38) It just doesn't have a sauce, okay? (15:39) So I'm not giving it up fully.(15:41) But I am more percentage, more percentage, more percentage, more percentage, optimizing for success, longevity, and reaching my full potential. (15:50) And Emilia and I had a conversation on a walk, and we both said, you know, when we get Domino's, we both kind of feel like shit. (15:59) And we both had a little discussion of, I think we have to can that.(16:02) She's like, I know, I've been thinking of that too. (16:04) And that was it. (16:05) Done.(16:06) We'll never eat pizza again. (16:08) Now, we just ordered Prego, and we're going to try to make something at home instead of Domino's. (16:14) Listen, I'm not telling anyone what to do.(16:16) What I am telling you is your future is only going to get better when you get better. (16:23) That's the only thing you have control over. (16:25) And the reason why I said focus is the most important thing is because what you have control over and influence over is your decisions.(16:31) What you say, think, do, feel, and believe and what you decide to put your attention on and what you focus on determines everything else. (16:38) And so I'm grateful that everyone's listening to us instead of whatever they could be listening to. (16:42) I'm grateful.(16:43) I just can't live with myself and not do all I can with all I have. (16:47) I've tried. (16:48) I just, I wake up in the morning and I go, okay, I have this magnificent life.(16:53) I have the most magnificent partner in the world. (16:56) I have so much to be grateful for. (17:00) I have to earn this.(17:03) I have to. (17:04) I have to earn this. (17:05) I remember when I drank too much and too often, and I wasn't earning it.(17:08) Yeah, I had fun, but how selfish? (17:10) And here's the other thing. (17:11) I was unfulfilled.(17:13) I don't think you can be fulfilled without at least trying to be better. (17:16) I think human beings want to try to be better. (17:19) And I think all the people who are wandering around aimlessly and pretending with ego that it's awesome.(17:26) I think it's mostly ego. (17:28) And I think that when they reach mortality, I think they will regret it, even if they don't admit it. (17:33) And I didn't mean to go heavy with this, but good.

Alan Lazaros

(17:35) I appreciate you, man.

Kevin Palmieri

(17:36) Hyperconscious episode. (17:37) Dude, you're the most fulfilled you've ever been. (17:39) I've never seen you lit up like this before.(17:41) I know, but it's also weird. (17:44) I don't fully understand it because my life right now, I'm literally like, I just need to get to the fucking weekend. (17:50) Like, I need to sleep.(17:51) We're on a 60 sleep score. (17:53) I'm not sleeping. (17:54) I'm grinding in the gym.(17:55) I'm just fucking grinding and I'm burning down. (17:57) But you love your life and your future is so bright. (18:00) I know, but it's like, here's the thing.(18:03) If nothing changed in my life, I'd be miserable though. (18:07) I think that's the goal of life is to consistently make it better and better and better. (18:11) And see what you can become and see what you can do and see what you can.(18:15) Here's the, here's the, and we, maybe we'll do an episode of this at some, maybe we, I think we should do a part two in this, honestly, because I do think this might be one of the most beneficial, positive things to talk about. (18:23) But how do you know how to maximize it? (18:25) How do you know what maximizing your potential is?(18:27) If you don't know how much potential you have? (18:29) That's where I get fucked up. (18:30) I'm way further than I thought I would be.(18:32) So by that definition, I need to never have it. (18:35) I'm not saying you're saying this, but no more whiskey. (18:38) I quit smoking weed.(18:40) What are we doing here? (18:41) I like my edibles. (18:42) I like my edibles, but they don't make edible whiskey.(18:45) They do. (18:45) It's called whiskey. (18:46) It's actually called whiskey.(18:48) So Jesus, man. (18:50) So maybe we'll do a part two of that. (18:52) What it comes down to, I think very, very last thing, Emilio and I said this yesterday, we got out at a leg day and we were driving home and neither one of us wanted to go last night.(19:02) It was just one of those long days. (19:05) And after driving home, the Tesla was driving us and we were just talking. (19:09) And I said, she said this, she said, see, even when you don't want to go, you'll always be proud you did.(19:17) And I said, I've been saying that for years. (19:20) I've, I, there are many times where I didn't want to go to the gym so many times, but I've never left the gym, not, not proud that I went. (19:29) And I think that that's the, that's what we all have to do is like, I didn't want to talk about this on this episode.(19:36) Like I would have much rather not done this. (19:39) But I'm proud that I did because it took courage. (19:43) And I think that you have to live for a bigger, better, brighter future.(19:46) That's why I don't believe in the power of now crap. (19:48) Like I get be present, but that's not true. (19:51) You have to think about the future you want.(19:53) You have to start with the end in mind. (19:55) There's so much neuroscience that talks about this and I don't want to be preachy, but I can't not because if you just stay present and dogs can't plan for the future, they can't design a career. (20:06) They can't start a podcast.(20:07) They can't build an iPhone. (20:08) They can't build a Sony camera. (20:10) Like you can't be fulfilled as a human being and never plan for the future and never think about the future.(20:17) And to me, it's seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, quarters, years, decades, and lifetime. (20:22) And you are so much more whole and fulfilled than I've ever seen you. (20:25) And when I first met you, you were fucking miserable.(20:28) And that's the goddamn truth. (20:29) You were having fun on a day to day and life was easier, but you didn't have the self-esteem and self-worth and self-belief and self-confidence that you have now. (20:38) That's what everyone wants.(20:39) Everyone wants self-worth and self-belief. (20:41) And those are a byproduct of maxing out. (20:45) One time Alan and I got high together and Alan had a panic attack almost and it was fun.(20:50) That was so not okay. (20:52) Out of control. (20:53) That was bad.(20:54) I was like, hey man, how long is this going to last? (20:56) You're like a couple hours. (20:57) Go to sleep.(20:58) Lay down. (20:58) You told me like an hour. (21:00) You lied to me out of self-preservation.(21:01) I had to lie. (21:02) I had to lie to you. (21:03) I was so upset.(21:04) Yeah. (21:05) Understandably so. (21:06) All right.(21:08) Well, no whiskey, no weed, no vice, no pizza, no fun. (21:13) That is the, no. (21:14) That's not true.

Alan Lazaros

(21:15) That's not true.

Kevin Palmieri

(21:16) I'm just, I thought it would be fun to go out on that one. (21:19) All right. (21:19) Cool.(21:20) I've done all of those things. (21:23) I've done all of those things. (21:24) Same, same.(21:25) And I will continue to do just less and less and less. (21:27) I will continue to do many of them, but less and less and less. (21:30) Less and less and less and less.(21:31) All right. (21:32) All right. (21:32) Next level nation.(21:33) If you are listening to this podcast and you're thinking, you know what? (21:36) I want to go a little bit deeper. (21:37) Podcast is great.(21:38) I listen every day. (21:39) Where do I go from here? (21:40) Alan has coaching slots available.(21:41) If you're really looking to get behind the scenes and get to the next level. (21:44) So we'll have his calendar in the show notes below. (21:46) You get one free 30 minute breakthrough session with Alan.(21:49) If you've used that, please do not book a free one because again, we're all about giving, but we started this as martyrs and we almost died.
