When’s The Last Time You Zoomed Out? (2343)
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Are you building the next level, or just surviving the current one?
In this episode, Kevin and Alan unpack why growth often feels heavier than expected. New environments disrupt rhythm. Bigger goals demand a stronger identity. Success increases responsibility. Drawing on years of coaching and a catalog of hard-earned lessons, they explain why perspective is a performance skill and why thinking in decades, not days, changes the game.
If you feel stretched or slightly off your center, this is your recalibration. Zoom out. Get honest. Decide who you need to become next. Do not drift into your future. Build it on purpose.

(0:00) In Alan's favorite television show, the song goes, it hasn't been your week, your month, or maybe your year or something like that. (0:09) That requires you to zoom out to figure out how bad it's actually been.
Alan Lazaros
(0:13) In relationship talks coaching that Emilia and I do, you got to make sure you're writing the same book, the same chapter at the same time, and hopefully you're on the same page.
Kevin Palmieri

Kevin Palmieri
(1:12) Next Level Nation today for episode number 2,343. (1:15) We're going to hit you with a quick one. (1:16) Okay, it's 15-18 minutes.(1:18) I'm just going to set the precedent here. (1:19) It's late. (1:21) I need to go to sleep.(1:22) When's the last time you zoomed out? (1:24) Today was the most productive day I have had in probably a week. (1:33) And it took me sitting down and having a really good day to realize that I haven't been having as good of days as I've wanted.(1:40) I told you I could feel it. (1:42) I know. (1:42) I'm still doing it, but today it was different.(1:44) Today it was just like, it's just, it's kind of been survival. (1:49) I don't know how I can tell. (1:50) I can just tell.(1:51) The kid knows the energies. (1:52) I'm connected to your... (1:53) He knows the energies.(1:54) You know what I think a really good example of this would be? (1:57) We talked about this recently. (1:58) I think for the last week or so, I've been playing defense.(2:01) And I think today was more like, all right, cool. (2:03) I'm ready to go back out on the court and go to battle. (2:06) But you hear me talk about seasons all the time.(2:09) You hear me talk about... (2:11) Well, go ahead.
Alan Lazaros
(2:12) No, no. (2:12) When we prepped for this before we hit record earlier today, I had said, let's talk about chapters. (2:22) You always want to talk about chapters.(2:24) Did I say seasons? (2:25) No, you said chapters, but I was like, well, I don't... (2:27) I talk about seasons.(2:28) Okay. (2:29) That makes way more sense now.
Kevin Palmieri
(2:31) Yeah.
Alan Lazaros
(2:31) Yeah. (2:31) So we've never talked about chapters then.
Kevin Palmieri
(2:34) What chapter are you in? (2:35) No, no, no. (2:36) I think we have.(2:37) Okay. (2:37) But the problem for me is chapters lead to the end of the book, and then the book is over. (2:42) Yeah, but then you write another book, baby.(2:44) Yeah. (2:44) Seasons are forever. (2:46) Yeah.(2:46) Fair. (2:47) So that's why... (2:47) Both good metaphors.(2:49) I think mine's maybe stronger, slightly.
Alan Lazaros
(2:55) No. (2:56) Here's why. (3:00) Mine includes, are you writing your own book or someone else's book?(3:04) Whereas the seasons...
Kevin Palmieri
(3:05) That's not even what that's about.
Alan Lazaros
(3:06) No, it is. (3:08) Nope. (3:08) You got to make sure you're writing your own book.
Kevin Palmieri
(3:10) It's a straw man fallacy.
Alan Lazaros
(3:12) Huh?
Kevin Palmieri
(3:13) Straw man fallacy. (3:15) Get out of here with that shit. (3:17) What?(3:18) Straw man fallacy. (3:19) No, I heard you. (3:20) You heard of it?(3:21) Explain it. (3:22) Damn. (3:23) It's when the opposition creates something that is false that they can argue against when you try to tear it down.(3:33) Nice job. (3:34) Is that accurate?
Alan Lazaros
(3:35) I don't know. (3:36) I've never heard of that. (3:37) Oh, really?(3:38) I probably... (3:39) It's one of the cognitive biases. (3:40) I'm assuming straw man fallacy is like a...
Kevin Palmieri
(3:43) No, this is debate club, son. (3:46) All right. (3:46) I'm on it.(3:47) You be on it. (3:48) Be on it. (3:49) But yeah, I want to ask you a question.(3:51) When you're done, you let me know. (3:54) Alan and I are in very weird energies. (3:56) Good, very good energies.
Alan Lazaros
(3:58) Straw man fallacy.
Kevin Palmieri
(4:01) I really hope I was right on this.
Alan Lazaros
(4:04) A straw man fallacy is when someone misinterprets or oversimplifies another person's argument so it's easier to attack. (4:11) Instead of arguing against what the person actually said, they argue against a distorted version of it. (4:16) No.
Kevin Palmieri
(4:17) No, no, no, definitely not. (4:19) In my... (4:20) I was probably 40%.(4:21) I give myself 40% accuracy on the way I described it. (4:23) That's not what I did at all, man. (4:24) This is why it's important to fact check.
Alan Lazaros
(4:25) No, what I said... (4:26) I didn't even talk about your metaphor. (4:30) I just think...(4:30) So it's really good the... (4:33) Are you writing... (4:34) Are you on the same page?(4:37) You and I as business partners, are we on the same page? (4:39) Obviously not.
Kevin Palmieri
(4:40) Not with a straw man fallacy.
Alan Lazaros
(4:41) Are we on the same page? (4:44) Are we on the same chapter? (4:45) What chapter are we on?(4:47) What's the theme to this lately? (4:49) Are we writing the same book? (4:51) And then I think it's cool to think about writing a series of bestselling books.(4:58) Because it's like legacy. (4:59) The work you do in the world... (5:01) Are you writing your book?(5:02) Are you writing someone else's book? (5:03) It's a great metaphor. (5:04) I'm just saying.(5:05) What season are you in right now? (5:11) What season am I in right now? (5:12) Yeah, how would you label it?(5:22) Okay, preparing for the next level. (5:27) What does that mean? (5:27) What is that like?(5:28) What does that mean? (5:32) I'm reluctant to share all this because it's... (5:34) All up in the air.(5:36) But you and Taryn just leveled up your life. (5:40) That was by design. (5:43) Emilie and I are going to be moving at some point as well.(5:47) Potentially selling this place. (5:48) Again, not 100% on any of this. (5:52) And we want to get a commercial place.(5:54) So we have an in-person studio again. (5:57) And then a lot of the work... (6:04) And then you and I have a big financial goal we're about to hit.(6:07) Yeah, which is predicated on all of it. (6:09) Or all of it is predicated on that. (6:11) So I'm in an interesting place where I'm about to launch into the new chapter.(6:19) I'm also going to start a family in the next five to ten years. (6:23) Five years really. (6:24) And all of that is...(6:26) We call it visioneering, Emilie and I. (6:28) And we reverse engineer everything we want in life. (6:33) And this next...(6:34) I mean, I'm 37, about to be 38 in November. (6:38) My 40s are going to be wild. (6:42) It's a lot to accomplish in a decade.(6:44) A lot. (6:45) And I'm feeling it a lot. (6:47) Like there is no more messing around, man.(6:53) When's the last time you were in a season like that? (6:59) I think in some ways I've never been in that season. (7:01) But I would say when I turned 30, there was definitely a moment of...(7:06) And this is the promise I made to myself. (7:08) I think this is a value, so I'll share it. (7:10) When I turned 30, and there's someone I coach who just turned 30.(7:13) Shout out to you, brother. (7:14) And I said, dude, done fucking around. (7:17) Like it's game time right now.(7:19) Make a decision to never again do anything that isn't a long-term investment. (7:27) Persons, places, things, and ideas. (7:28) I don't invest in any short-term stocks, metaphorically.(7:33) And when I turned 30, that's when you and I dialed up in business like a big time. (7:39) And I just was done with any bullshit. (7:42) There was no more barbecues.(7:43) There was no more partying. (7:44) There was no more alcohol. (7:46) There was no...(7:46) Like seven years ago is when I quit drinking. (7:49) And yeah, 2019 was the last time I had a drink. (7:52) And so it was game time, man.(7:54) So what season are you in?
Kevin Palmieri
(7:56) I don't even know. (7:58) It's hard because it feels like... (8:02) Dude, I don't know.(8:02) It happens so fast. (8:04) Everything was just rolling. (8:06) Everything was normal.(8:07) I was just grinding, grinding, grinding. (8:09) It was like, all right, countdown to move, countdown to move, countdown to move. (8:11) And then this move, and you predicted this.(8:14) This move is way more humbling than I... (8:16) I mean, it's just a whole thing. (8:20) So it has been...(8:22) I have very little to show for the amount of effort I've been putting in. (8:26) But like the day... (8:27) I've been doing like 6 a.m. till 10 p.m. almost every day. (8:30) Not on the business though. (8:31) 6 a.m. till... (8:34) Not really 6 a.m. 8 a.m. till 6 p.m. is on the business. (8:37) And then 6 to 10 is on the house.
Alan Lazaros
(8:38) Yeah, big place, dude. (8:39) It's a lot of responsibility. (8:41) There's...(8:41) I know, because when you move to a big place... (8:43) And again, big's relative, right?
Kevin Palmieri
(8:45) Yeah, yeah.
Alan Lazaros
(8:45) But I'm assuming your place is like 2,200 square feet or something like that?
Kevin Palmieri
(8:49) I think it's three times what we had before. (8:52) What is it, 24? (8:53) I think it's 24.
Alan Lazaros
(8:54) 24. (8:55) That's a huge place. (8:56) It's big.(8:56) For two people, it's big. (8:58) Yeah. (8:58) And now everything is a chore now.(9:04) Like you have to figure out what to put in every room. (9:06) It's more expensive than you expected. (9:08) Everything.(9:09) And this is why I always say success makes life harder, not easier. (9:12) Now it's awesome. (9:14) Yeah, for sure.(9:15) Next level, next level. (9:16) Done. (9:17) Now it's like, okay, figure out how to play at this level.(9:20) Well, I think that's kind of the season is...
Kevin Palmieri
(9:24) I'm just trying to juggle everything. (9:26) I'm just trying to juggle it. (9:27) I think for the first week, it was, I have to make sure a certain amount of things get done here.(9:35) I'm very time bound by things that... (9:38) Okay, the movers are coming. (9:39) So that has to happen.(9:39) And then this is happening and this is happening. (9:41) So this all has to get done. (9:42) Now I feel more, okay, we're here and we still have some stuff that we need to get brought over, but it's not the end of the world.(9:49) So I feel more locked down than I did before. (9:54) And as much as I strongly dislike dieting, I do like the chasing the goal of getting leaner, for sure.
Alan Lazaros
(10:05) And you spend less time eating.
Kevin Palmieri
(10:08) I do spend less time eating, yeah. (10:10) Mm-hmm.
Alan Lazaros
(10:11) It's easy.
Kevin Palmieri
(10:11) And I enjoy it.
Alan Lazaros
(10:12) You don't have to worry about eating so much. (10:15) It's very time consuming and it's expensive because you have to buy a lot more food. (10:19) For sure.
Kevin Palmieri
(10:20) I like getting leaner. (10:22) I like getting leaner. (10:23) And I like seeing it in the mirror.(10:26) Like I've always enjoyed that. (10:28) I've always enjoyed that. (10:29) I like seeing what the body can do.(10:31) I always used to say the body is like a piece of clay. (10:33) Like you can mold it. (10:34) You can mold it.(10:35) So yeah, I would say I'm in that. (10:37) But it's a heavy season of just, yeah, there's a lot of responsibility. (10:41) There's a lot of responsibility.(10:43) And I think the hard thing is, I've had this season probably every year since I started this. (10:52) But it never felt like this. (10:54) But it probably felt exactly like this at the time.(10:56) I just didn't realize it. (10:57) It's a lot. (10:59) So I'm sure next year, whatever, I'll have another season of this.(11:03) And it'll feel worse than it did this time. (11:06) But I'll be more capable of handling it. (11:08) This time was really, I mean, I was, this was like some of the hardest times I've had in a long time.(11:13) Just lack of sleep and all that. (11:15) Like I got to the point where I cognitively could tell. (11:19) I'm having trouble remembering things.(11:21) And that's very rare for me. (11:23) I mean, I, again, I used to be the guy who slept four hours a night and didn't know why I couldn't function. (11:28) But now I understand.(11:30) But I also know the detriment of not sleeping enough.
Alan Lazaros
(11:31) You don't realize how dialed you were until you leave that place. (11:35) And that's zooming out. (11:36) That's what we're talking about.(11:38) That's why I'm concerned. (11:39) Like I'm excited. (11:40) That'll be great.(11:41) Of course, right? (11:43) There'll be an upgrade. (11:45) But I'm, I mean, you and Taryn lived in that other place for however many years and you dialed it all in.(11:52) You had your routines there. (11:54) You had everything set up. (11:56) You, and we have that here.(11:59) And every time I travel, it's very hard to get everything done. (12:07) And to the point of the last episode where everything accumulates, I do think this is true. (12:14) I think everyone underestimates the power of their environment.(12:19) When we travel, what we do on a day-to-day basis, right? (12:23) So I was talking to group coaching yesterday, and I want everyone thinking of themselves, not just us. (12:27) But I was talking to group coaching on Tuesday.(12:29) That wasn't yesterday, Tuesday. (12:31) And I was thinking to myself, because we were trying to teach them prep, rep, reflect, perfect, the mastery formula where when you do an episode, you got to review it. (12:40) You got to, it sucks to listen to yourself as a podcaster, but you got to do it because you got to hear what you're not hearing.(12:46) And you got to be a consumer of your own content to improve it. (12:49) And I said, I'm doing 15 episodes a week now. (12:54) Between Next Level University is seven.(12:56) Business Growth University is one. (12:58) Conscious Couples Podcast is one. (13:00) And then I'm averaging, according to my EA, shout out to you, Laura, I'm averaging six.(13:08) So, seven, eight, nine, yeah, 15 a week. (13:11) I couldn't possibly listen to all those. (13:15) Not to mention, I like to wake up in the morning and learn from courses or speeches or books, hard copy books in the morning, in the evening, and then audio books throughout the day.(13:24) I don't want to listen to myself because I already know all this.
Kevin Palmieri
(13:29) Right, all that you're saying, yeah.
Alan Lazaros
(13:31) Yeah, I already know it. (13:32) And at the end of the day, I think repetition is good too. (13:34) But my point is, when we move, I'm going to have a really hard time doing that.(13:45) Like, what you make look easy in a certain environment is way harder in another one. (13:50) And what's relevant to this topic here is, I think everyone underestimates how hard it is to go to the next level. (14:00) Everyone, always, including me, 100%.(14:03) You think, you romanticize, you think it's going to be great. (14:06) 2,400 square feet. (14:07) Awesome.(14:08) And it is great. (14:09) It is. (14:09) It's fucking awesome.(14:10) Great. (14:12) And getting there and locking that in while also doing everything you were doing prior to that in order to get to that level.
Kevin Palmieri
(14:20) Yeah, yeah, that's, well, maybe that's the takeaway that I would share is, I think the problem with zooming out is you have to do it constantly. (14:31) But you can't just do it once every, you have to do it. (14:34) It has to be like a habit.(14:35) You have to have some sort of perspective shift and reset because if not, you won't know how far you've actually come. (14:42) That's part one. (14:43) And then part two, this is going to happen again in a different degree.(14:47) And my goal is to be more capable. (14:49) There's no way I could have done this with everything else going on five years ago. (14:54) There's no way.(14:55) I mean, it stretched me a ton this time. (14:58) That's important to know.
Alan Lazaros
(15:00) And not only that. (15:01) So you five years ago couldn't have handled all this, which is why I'm always saying you need to want to become the person who's capable of handling the next level before you go to it. (15:17) And obviously once you get there, it'll be harder than you think and you'll adapt reactively too.(15:22) But like I told you, the courses that I bought, the course that I bought, like that wasn't for now. (15:29) That was for in general. (15:32) It was enterprise building, business building.(15:35) You listen to this podcast right now. (15:37) Anyone out there? (15:39) This isn't just for now.(15:43) This is for the entire, you take this with you. (15:45) This is one more. (15:48) I hope, and this is my hope.(15:49) I don't know if it's true. (15:51) I hope every person who listens to our show, after you're done listening to each episode, I hope you do something different. (16:01) I hope you sail away from that toxic person, or I hope you, I don't know, design a prompt to brush your teeth more often, or think about, zoom out and think about your life in each decade.(16:15) Maybe you're a little more consistent or a little more. (16:18) I hope that every single day you're, because you and I talked about this offline. (16:23) I don't ever listen to a podcast just to listen, ever.(16:26) I don't ever read a book just to read it. (16:29) I always implement something. (16:31) Like, I can't, even after a coaching call, my clients listening know this.(16:35) You aren't leaving this fucking call the same as you came in it. (16:39) No chance. (16:40) Otherwise, this is useless.(16:41) What are we going to do differently? (16:43) What are we going to do differently? (16:45) Better.(16:47) Something has to go, or something has to increase or decrease, or something has to come in. (16:52) And what I usually say at the end of my calls is, what's the thing that you know that you know that you should be doing, but you're not? (16:59) Love that question.(17:00) Everyone always has one.
Kevin Palmieri
(17:02) Mobility.
Alan Lazaros
(17:02) Yours is mobility. (17:02) I knew what it was before I even asked. (17:04) Mine is, turn off my damn alarm.(17:06) No, but mine was mobility 31 days ago. (17:10) Now we have a 31-day streak. (17:12) But you're not going to do mobility right now when you haven't moved in yet.(17:15) You got to get set up. (17:16) No, I think I am. (17:18) No, I think I am.
Kevin Palmieri
(17:19) Well, nice. (17:20) I think I am. (17:20) I think I'm ready.(17:21) The other thing too, and I know we did an episode on this. (17:23) A lot of the stuff for me was like, I'm just going to wait. (17:27) I'm just going to wait until I move.(17:29) I know it's not optimal. (17:30) I know it's a fucking excuse. (17:31) I know I can start now.(17:32) I'm not going to. (17:33) I know myself. (17:34) I'm not going to lie to myself.(17:36) I'll just do it when we move. (17:37) And that'll be the thing. (17:39) I hate that.(17:40) I do.
Alan Lazaros
(17:41) I fell for that too, with this financial goal we have. (17:44) I fell for it. (17:45) Well, the problem is, that was a very long- Too long.(17:48) This is a- Freaking eight months, man. (17:50) This is a couple of weeks, right? (17:51) Oh my goodness.(17:52) How long has it been? (17:53) It's not actually eight months. (17:54) It's like six months.
Kevin Palmieri
(17:55) No, no, no, no, no. (17:56) August, September, November, December, January, February. (17:59) Yeah, seven months.
Alan Lazaros
(18:00) Seven months.
Kevin Palmieri
(18:00) Eight months, yeah. (18:01) Too long. (18:02) A long time.(18:03) Yeah. (18:03) All right, takeaway. (18:04) What's the takeaway?
Alan Lazaros
(18:05) I feel like you just kind of gave it, but- Make sure you're, whoever you're closest with, make sure you're on the same page. (18:18) You know what chapter you're on. (18:20) You know what book you're writing.(18:21) You make sure it's your book, not someone else's. (18:24) And then, yeah, zoom out. (18:26) What is the line of best-selling books you want to write in this metaphor?(18:29) It's not actually writing. (18:33) I like the decade thing, okay? (18:35) So you look back at your past and you say, okay, from zero to 10, this is what my life was, good, bad, or ugly.(18:41) 10 to 20, this is what my life was about. (18:43) Like, there's themes to your decades. (18:44) There are.(18:45) There are themes. (18:46) And what theme do you want your 40s to be and your 50s and your 60s? (18:51) I was on a podcast earlier and she said, well, maybe when you're 50 in 13 years, you know, you'll slow down a bit.(18:57) And I was like, no, not a chance. (19:00) And she's like, well, you don't know, you know, because she was older. (19:02) And I was like, nope.(19:03) I said, even when I was a kid, I always said my career wouldn't even start until I was 50. (19:08) She's like, oh, I think that's helpful. (19:11) Maybe I'll change.(19:12) We'll see. (19:13) But I think it's helpful to go, what do you want your 40s to be about? (19:18) What do you want your 50s to be about?(19:19) What do you want your 60s to be about? (19:20) This long-term strategic planning thing is wildly underrated. (19:24) It's so important.
Kevin Palmieri
(19:25) Well, it's something that I won't say it comes to you easy. (19:27) I don't know. (19:28) But something you're very good at that I, I know I struggle with that.(19:32) So I don't know. (19:32) I'm not, whether I'm not projecting on you out there. (19:35) Maybe you're really good at it.(19:36) I don't know. (19:36) But it's hard. (19:38) It's hard to know, you know?(19:40) Well, you can change it, right? (19:43) Yeah.
Alan Lazaros
(19:43) But you've got to have an idea.
Kevin Palmieri
(19:45) No bad is going to come of that. (19:47) Well, look, I thought I'd be driving around in Winnebago playing professional baseball. (19:50) That didn't pan out.
Alan Lazaros
(19:53) You were wrong.
Kevin Palmieri
(19:53) Because I was wrong because I didn't know how to do it. (19:55) I just thought it was going to happen. (19:57) And it doesn't.(19:59) You want to be the best in the world? (20:00) Something doesn't just happen. (20:01) I didn't know that.(20:03) I thought if I just did it for long enough, kind of align. (20:07) It did not. (20:08) My takeaway for this episode would be, well, you hear me say this all the time.(20:13) I take a look back. (20:16) I almost, I didn't have time today, but it was like right before one of my meetings and I was on our YouTube channel and I was like, I'm going to go back and watch like episode 100. (20:23) That's how I know I need a, I'm floating.(20:26) Like I'm brutal. (20:28) That's how I know I need. (20:29) That black backdrop with Steve McQueen.(20:31) Steve McQueen, our skeleton mascot. (20:35) So that when you feel like you're floating around or you're floating away or whatever it is you're sinking, go seek context. (20:43) And I'm sure that'll help.
Alan Lazaros
(20:44) Yeah, man. (20:45) You dig it? (20:46) I do.(20:47) Steve McQueen, by the way, my sister was an x-ray tech. (20:49) She, one of our first studios was in her old bedroom and way back. (20:55) And we put a muscle shirt, a hyper-conscious muscle shirt on the skeleton that she used during x-ray tech school.(21:05) Steve McQueen. (21:06) Steve McQueen.
Kevin Palmieri
(21:07) Maybe we'll bring him back when we get the new studio. (21:10) He won't be on camera or anything, but maybe we could have like, you know, we'll have him somewhere. (21:13) What a trip, man.(21:14) We got to find him. (21:15) That's, and that's important, right? (21:16) You don't know how far you've come until you, until you look back.(21:20) Yeah, that's wild. (21:21) It's really hard to know. (21:22) A hundred episodes in.(21:24) I thought we knew it all. (21:27) I thought I knew it all for sure. (21:28) A hundred episodes in, I was like, I, I know.(21:31) I am a wisdomatic man. (21:33) I know some shit. (21:33) I didn't know anything.(21:35) I didn't think I knew it all, but I definitely thought we knew a lot. (21:38) Yeah, for sure. (21:38) Well, in retrospect, I don't think we did.(21:40) All right. (21:40) If you want to know more about Alan's coaching, reach out to Alan directly.
