Kevin Palmieri
(0:00) There are certain topics that we do that I don't really feel like I know all that well, and when I have that thought process, I just say, all right, I'm going to kind of interview Alan on what I want to learn about the thing that we're trying to teach you. (0:14) And today is going to be, hopefully, a shining example of that. (0:17) One of the hardest things in the entire world, particularly in the noisy 21st century, is priorities.(0:22) There are micro priorities, meaning day-to-day. (0:24) There are macro priorities, meaning year, decade, lifetime. (0:27) We're going to talk about that today.(0:30) Welcome to Next Level University. (0:33) I'm your host, Kevin Palmieri. (0:35) And I'm your co-host, Alan Lazarus.(0:38) At NLU, we believe in a heart-driven but no-BS approach to holistic self-improvement for dream chasers. (0:44) Our goal with every episode is to help you level up your life, love, health, and wealth. (0:51) We bring you a new episode every single day on topics like confidence, self-belief, self-worth, self-awareness, relationships, boundaries, consistency, habits, and defining your own unique version of success.(1:06) Self-improvement, in your pocket, every day, from anywhere, completely free. (1:13) Welcome to Next Level University. (1:19) Next Level Nation today for episode number 2,398, micro priorities versus macro priorities.(1:26) My first question is, yeah, how do you differentiate the two? (1:35) I think micro priority is this moment. (1:38) So our micro priority right now is doing an effective episode.(1:44) We have two episodes to record before noon. (1:47) That's our micro priority, both of us. (1:49) Okay.(1:50) But our macro priority is to impact more people through the podcast and the business. (1:58) So your micro priorities are supposed to lead to your macro priorities and they aren't always the same, but they do, they are connected. (2:06) They're correlated.(2:07) Okay. (2:08) Why does this, this is going to be like a question I'm going to try to ask you on repeat forever. (2:12) Why does this matter?(2:15) Like what's the, why does this matter? (2:16) Why is this important to know? (2:17) Because if you, if your micro priorities are not in line with your macro priorities, your life is going to end up not what you hope it will be.(2:26) You have an example. (2:28) Yeah. (2:28) So longevity is a macro priority of mine.(2:33) Doing another fitness show is not necessarily in alignment with longevity. (2:39) So I have to, if I did do a fitness show, that would be a micro priority, three month process. (2:46) I would need to do it without losing sight of the macro priority.(2:51) Okay. (2:52) And my macro priority is my marriage with Amelia, future marriage, not engaged yet, but that might hurt my marriage or my relationship in this case. (3:01) I need to not let the micro priority of winning a fitness show destroy my macro priority of being in love and having a magnificent relationship.(3:11) And I think that a lot of times our micro priorities destroy our macro priorities and that's a short term loss for a longterm or no short term win for a longterm loss. (3:21) How do you know? (3:22) What's the question you can ask?(3:24) This is always, these are always hard because it's like you have to have so much awareness on. (3:28) Yeah. (3:28) A hundred percent.(3:30) All of it. (3:31) You might think if you're out there right now, you might think, Oh, you know what? (3:34) I'm somebody who wants to be way more healthy.(3:36) I think doing a bodybuilding show would be good for me. (3:38) It's like, eh, I mean, you'll definitely instill habits of tracking and fitness and consistency. (3:43) And it's also not healthy at all.(3:45) It's terrible unless you do it in a certain way. (3:48) You might not, if you want to do a fitness show, the most healthy way to do it is to not plan to win. (3:55) That's what I would say.(3:56) Yeah, agreed. (3:56) A hundred percent. (3:56) Just do it for the journey.(3:58) I remember you and I talked about, you knew I wouldn't win. (4:02) And I was trying to walk the line of get lean enough to win, but not so lean that I destroy my longterm muscle mass. (4:09) So that's a good example of macro and micro priorities.(4:12) And I think one of the things that you and I ran into early in working together is you thought that my micro priorities were suboptimal, but of course you did because I'm not doing anything for now. (4:26) Yeah. (4:27) It's hard to explain though.(4:28) Like imagine, let's have you do it because you have been on both ends. (4:32) Imagines. (4:32) Okay.(4:33) Somebody comes on the team, right? (4:34) Somebody, somebody comes on the team. (4:36) Let's say they're working pretty closely with you.(4:38) And they say, what should I know? (4:40) I'm going to be working with Alan. (4:41) I have a call with him every week.(4:42) Like, what should I know? (4:43) I would say, prepare for him to be late for almost every meeting. (4:46) And here's why it's not what you think.(4:50) It's not, it's not that he doesn't care. (4:52) It's not that he's overlooking you. (4:53) It's not that it's that usually he's in flow.(4:57) He's doing something and his time is essentially more effectively spent doing that thing and finishing it than it is to be on direct time every time. (5:06) The micro priority is not beyond time. (5:10) The micro priority is maximize.(5:13) Again, you can speak to it more effectively than I can. (5:16) Well, that's, I have a five minute buffer with all clients and I have my EA sending out an email for a five minute buffer with podcasts and all kinds of stuff. (5:27) The reason why is because if I have back-to-backs, excuse me, back-to-backs, so today I have from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. back-to-back, no breaks. (5:39) How am I going to, what am I going to do? (5:41) Not go to the bathroom? (5:43) Like, so, so I think that a little bit of wiggle room is necessary, but that's, that's not your point with this.(5:49) Your point is I prioritize macro over micro, yeah. (5:53) And micro is, is making sure you look good. (5:57) Not even that though.(5:58) Well, yes, yes. (5:59) Because you could say, you could literally do the same thing for me. (6:01) Like Kevin will be on time for every meeting at the expense of whatever he's supposed to be doing.(6:05) Yeah. (6:06) That is factually, I mean, that is a fact. (6:08) You'll be early.(6:09) Yes. (6:09) I remember one time you told me you got somewhere an hour early and that's a credit hit for me because what are you doing with that hour? (6:14) Now, now you get there early and do Wi-Fi in the car, but back then I was Jeffing off for sure.(6:20) But that, that's an interesting thing. (6:21) That's like a tell though. (6:22) It's a tell that you don't maximize your time, which it isn't now.(6:26) Now you've, but now you do macro micro. (6:29) So you, you were micro only. (6:30) Yeah.(6:31) And I think I was not macro only, but like heavy macro. (6:35) And then we've driven to five where we both integrate. (6:37) So I'm macro first, micro second, you're micro first, macro second.(6:41) And I think most people are micro first, macro second. (6:44) Well, that's why it's a credit hit when you're late, unless somebody knows why. (6:47) Unless they know why.(6:47) And that's what I would say is. (6:49) Which is why it's actually good for the macro. (6:51) Yes.(6:52) If I am on time, if that's the case. (6:53) So this is all game theory stuff. (6:55) Sure.(6:56) I accept that. (6:57) I accept that response. (6:59) Perception is a part of the game, unfortunately.(7:03) And it is huge. (7:05) Kind of short term. (7:06) Massive part.(7:07) It's kind of short term. (7:08) Like nobody's going to remember this episode. (7:13) Let's say, um, but they will remember the podcast itself.(7:19) Yeah. (7:20) Yeah. (7:20) But like, let's say I take a credit hit right now.(7:22) It's like, again, if you say something unforgivable, that's different. (7:27) But like, let's say I farted and say, I just farted and you heard on the mic. (7:31) You're not going to remember that in a hundred episodes.(7:33) No, you're not going to remember that. (7:35) People don't forget. (7:36) People don't forget.(7:37) Okay. (7:38) What? (7:39) It was like eight years ago, asshole.(7:41) Super bad reference. (7:42) Yeah. (7:44) What?(7:45) Okay. (7:45) Most common thing people get wrong about this. (7:49) I'm treating this like an interview.(7:50) Yeah. (7:50) That is one of the funniest scenes of all time. (7:53) Why don't you go pee your pants again?(7:55) That was like eight years ago, asshole. (7:57) People don't forget. (7:58) Super bad is one of the funniest movies.(8:00) Just that scene. (8:01) No, the movie in general. (8:02) I mean, the movie is hilarious, but that scene was unbelievable.(8:04) It's too much. (8:06) It's too much now, right? (8:07) It's too much now.(8:08) Kicks the ball. (8:08) It's like, you're getting that. (8:09) No, I'm not.(8:11) It's like hilarious. (8:12) Okay. (8:13) What were you saying?(8:13) I'm so sorry. (8:14) No, you're good. (8:15) What is, what do people get wrong about this?(8:17) What is the most common? (8:18) They forget about the macro straight up. (8:20) Macro matters more.(8:22) It just does. (8:23) Like moment to moment. (8:25) It just always will.(8:26) People who say the present is a gift because that's why they call it a present. (8:32) You're living, average life expectancy is 80. (8:34) If we only live to 20, yeah.(8:36) Stay present for sure. (8:38) But it's not, that's not real. (8:40) It's not true.(8:40) The most successful people in life, statistically speaking, are people who are future oriented. (8:45) Okay. (8:45) I got you.(8:46) I got something for you. (8:48) You're trying to teach nine year ago, Kevin, this. (8:52) Nine years ago, I didn't have macro priorities.(8:56) I had micro priorities. (8:58) So how, what is the first step? (8:59) The first step would be, where do you think you're going to be in 10 years?(9:04) What do you think your life is going to be like? (9:05) Millionaire. (9:07) You wouldn't have said that.(9:08) That was my goal. (9:10) Okay. (9:12) And I would say now, this version of me back then, I'd be like, yeah, you got this.(9:16) But I didn't know. (9:17) I didn't know that you didn't know, you know? (9:20) Interesting.(9:21) I would say not a chance. (9:23) The corkboard vision board didn't give it away. (9:25) This is what I would have said.(9:26) I would have said, Kev, I'm saying this because I care. (9:30) Based on my understanding of your current mindset and your current trajectory and your current habits, not a fucking chance. (9:37) Especially with your habits around money.(9:40) And then what would you have said? (9:42) Fuck you. (9:42) End of conversation.
Alan Lazaros
(9:43) Yeah. (9:43) I'd like my money back, please.
Kevin Palmieri
(9:45) No wonder why you're not going to learn. (9:46) That's funny. (9:47) I don't know.(9:48) Back then, I probably would have said, I probably would have egoed up. (9:52) Did you know I made $100,000 last year, motherfucker. (9:56) How much do you have in your account?(9:57) Like 8,000. (9:58) That's good. (10:00) Compared to what?(10:02) Zero. (10:03) Zero? (10:04) Nice.(10:04) Yeah, it is better than zero. (10:05) Congratulations. (10:06) Right?(10:07) Like, at the end of the day, how successful do you want to be? (10:09) That's where I would start. (10:10) I did this last night with a client.(10:12) I said, she's like, is that right? (10:16) Because she was talking about a pretty intense mentality. (10:20) And I said, it depends.(10:22) What does right mean? (10:23) I said, do you actually intend on being a millionaire? (10:26) And I'm not talking.(10:27) I mean, actually intend on it. (10:28) Like, do you really want this? (10:30) Do you want to be top 1% in net worth?(10:35) And she's like, yeah. (10:36) I said, well, then yeah, that mentality is exactly how you have to think. (10:39) Mindset is such a, your mindset is predicated on your goals.(10:44) Can you imagine a Michael Jordan being like, nah, you know, I don't really care if we win. (10:50) I think it's the opposite. (10:50) Mindset is predicated on your goals.(10:52) I think your goals is predicated on your mindset. (10:54) I know, but which one's first? (10:56) Goals first.(10:58) No, mindset. (10:59) Goals first. (11:00) Mindset.(11:01) No fucking chance. (11:02) Yeah. (11:03) Most people have their mindset long before they have their goals.(11:05) Your mindset is predicated on the goals you set. (11:08) They're totally connected. (11:09) So we can't, let me ask you this question.(11:12) Let me ask you this question. (11:15) If you ask somebody, if you, okay, if you, and I don't know how you could ever do this, we would need the truth serum from mission impossible or whatever. (11:22) But if you could sit somebody down and say, what do you, what level of success do you desire?(11:29) Question one, question two, what level of success do you feel you can actually accomplish? (11:34) What's the Delta? (11:36) Huge.(11:37) That's huge. (11:38) If they were honest with themselves and with me. (11:42) But isn't it sometimes the under where somebody says like, oh, I'd like to make, I don't know.(11:46) I'd like to be able to make like $75,000. (11:47) Like, all right, that's a couple of fucking pivots. (11:49) You can definitely do that.(11:51) Yeah. (11:51) It's under sometimes. (11:52) Under sometimes.(11:53) I think it's usually over with me though. (11:55) With you. (11:56) When people talk to me, they usually over shoot.(11:59) Like you were like, yeah, billionaire. (12:01) It's like, dude, I remember I told somebody, I was like, all we have to do is double our business every year for the next like 50. (12:09) That's all we have to do.(12:10) I said, that's somebody straight faced. (12:15) Now we've doubled our business for four times. (12:18) We have, um, we did four years in a row.(12:20) That was something. (12:21) It's not what I thought. (12:22) Yeah.(12:23) And then we didn't for two more years. (12:26) What was it? (12:26) Double.(12:27) It was 160%, 150%, 110%. (12:30) And then it was like 90%. (12:31) And then, and then the next year was like 11%.(12:34) It was like, Oh, big drop off. (12:36) Yeah. (12:36) Yeah.(12:36) Yeah. (12:37) But anyways, so macro priorities, micro priorities, goals, and mindset. (12:43) I think if you have no goals, you have no necessity to improve your mindset.(12:47) But if you have a bad mindset, you're not gonna have goals. (12:51) This is always the conundrum. (12:52) Everything's a goddamn conundrum.(12:54) Everything's a paradox. (12:55) This person, do you intend on being a millionaire? (12:59) Well, then you need a millionaire mindset, not the fake fluffy feel good.(13:03) Sell my book one. (13:04) I mean, the actual one where like willingness work ethic, don't spend money on any luxuries, invest all this stuff. (13:17) So your macro priorities should determine your micro priorities.(13:21) Otherwise you're going to end up here's something I've never said out loud. (13:24) It's wild to think of that. (13:27) Did you know that the majority of things that people want in life that you see on social media are impossible?(13:33) If you're playing a short game, did I know, like if you took away all generational wealth, let's just hypothetical universe, 8 billion people on planet earth, 195 countries, you take all the wealth away from everybody and you spread it equally amongst everyone. (13:51) Almost everything that people see that they think they want was predicated on something that was long-term like apple, right? (14:01) We love the iPhone, but they didn't build the iPhone this year.(14:06) Nothing is like a, like a one, like, Oh, YouTube, this thing's awesome. (14:10) It's, it's actually terrible at first. (14:12) And then it gets a little better, a little better, a little better.(14:14) And then they sold it for a billion dollars to Google. (14:16) And here we are. (14:18) There are no like big success stories that are like that.(14:23) They just all appear that way. (14:25) And so my point is generational wealth has allowed certain people to have levels of success that were built on the compound effect of humanity. (14:32) Not even us, like we didn't create these cameras.(14:35) We didn't build these microphones. (14:37) StreamYard didn't exist. (14:38) Like we are sitting on the shoulders of a lot of people's work prior to us.(14:43) And so everything we think that we want was built by a some compound effect that nobody knows about. (14:48) It's, it's a fascinating concept. (14:51) It is a fascinating concept.(14:53) It makes you build the future. (14:55) Leaders are visionaries. (14:57) They, they just are.(14:58) You have a vision for your future. (15:00) You have a vision for you and Taren. (15:01) It's not that big compared to, you know, Steve Jobs or whatever, but it's, it's there.(15:06) Go back to a time when you had no vision. (15:09) Simple. (15:10) Yeah.(15:10) Okay. (15:10) How old were you? (15:12) 24.(15:13) Okay. (15:14) What if you didn't change? (15:16) What if you kept all those habits?(15:18) You kept that exact mindset. (15:19) You kept running away from pain. (15:21) You kept running away from discomfort.(15:23) You kept, you never went and talked to strangers. (15:25) You never teamed up with me. (15:26) You never listened to a word I said, dude, where would you be right now?(15:28) What's your truth? (15:30) Plus or minus 10% of where I was before. (15:33) Probably.(15:33) Where were you? (15:37) Uh, externally successful quote unquote by all outside standards. (15:41) I was very successful mid twenties.(15:43) We'll just say, yeah, we'll just say mid twenties, but I was miserable, miserable, no self-awareness disciplined, no disciplined in fitness, but nothing else. (15:53) Like no habits, no future pacing, no consciousness. (16:00) I would, yeah, I'd be in trouble.(16:01) I'd be in trouble. (16:02) Yeah. (16:03) I'd be miserable for sure.(16:06) What we did when you and I teamed up is we just created this big vision that was bigger than ourselves and then worked toward it every day. (16:15) And as a by-product, you became this man who needed, who was more responsible and more capable and met Taryn and all that stuff. (16:23) It sounds so simple.(16:23) It sounds so simple. (16:24) I know.
Alan Lazaros
(16:25) I know.
Kevin Palmieri
(16:25) It's weird. (16:26) It was not simple. (16:27) I mean, the concept of having a vision and manifesting it is simple, quote unquote, but every single day has to be a little bit more discerning, a little bit more oriented, a little bit more improvement.(16:40) I know we got to go, but. (16:42) And that's, it's so connected to like when we did the, for episode 2396, what percentage of you is focused on success like that? (16:51) Everything is connected.(16:52) It's all, everything we've done, every 2,390 whatever episodes is connected to this moment in some way to this. (17:00) So like, yes, it's simple when you zoom out and say, all you have to do is set a goal and then essentially dedicate your life to that goal. (17:06) And you'll figure you'll have to learn the things and that's good stuff.(17:09) But then like when you zoom in today's Wednesday and you have, you got to do this and you got to do this and you got to do this and you got to do this. (17:16) It's like, it's so fucking confusing and so simple at the same time. (17:20) Yeah.(17:20) To do list is your micro priorities. (17:23) Your lip is falling off your face. (17:24) Is it?(17:25) Oh yeah, a little bit. (17:27) I didn't, I didn't use my chapstick today. (17:29) Get that, get that out of there.(17:30) Take that off and throw that on the floor. (17:31) Will you? (17:32) This episode brought to you by Blistex.(17:35) Lip medex. (17:37) Um, micro priorities, a to-do list. (17:42) Whatever you have to get done right after this episode, when we hit end on the two recordings we're doing, that's a micro priority.(17:51) That better lead to something macro, dude. (17:53) Otherwise you're wasting your fucking time. (17:55) That's fair.(17:57) Now, what about R and R? (17:59) What about enjoyment? (17:59) What about pleasure?(18:00) What about fun? (18:01) What about adventure? (18:01) No, no, no.(18:02) I see you. (18:03) That's part of the equation. (18:05) Adventure, like I went on a hike with Emilia this morning.(18:08) That's part of it. (18:09) But a hike is just a hike. (18:11) It also needs to be exercised toward health.(18:16) Your life should be getting better. (18:18) I believe that when you get smarter and wiser and make better, you can make your life better. (18:23) Like people used to say, and I've said this before, like these are the best years of your life.(18:27) High school was awful. (18:29) You're full of shit, son. (18:30) High school was so much worse than this.(18:32) It's not even funny. (18:33) It's not even close. (18:34) My life has gotten better, but that's because I've gotten better and you've gotten better and our company's gotten better and our team's gotten better and our choices have gotten better and our awareness has gotten better and our capabilities and skills and sub skills and meta skills have all gotten better.(18:46) Your life is going to blow if you're not getting better. (18:49) I don't know why we didn't get that fucking memo. (18:53) Because I think we overvalue the potential of accidental change for whatever reason.(19:03) Because you're not getting better, your relationship, fitness, family, finance, health, wealth, love. (19:08) If those things aren't getting better, your future is going to be worse. (19:13) It is that plain and simple.(19:15) And it doesn't mean they're better every day. (19:17) It doesn't mean they don't feel better. (19:19) Let's say that client is working on finances, earn more, spend less, invest the difference, killing it, tracking every day, boom, boom, boom.(19:27) She's like, my life, it's so bad. (19:29) I know it feels terrible, but the trend lines are in the right direction. (19:34) Over time, time is your friend now.(19:36) Your trajectory is good. (19:39) I know it's invisible. (19:41) The progress feels, it doesn't even feel invisible.(19:44) It actually feels worse. (19:46) And I told her, I sent her this last thing, I know we got to go. (19:51) Rewire.(19:52) I just realized that client is not able to make a call. (19:55) One second. (19:56) So what happens when you open WhatsApp?(19:58) It's the worst. (20:00) Start rewiring your thinking every day. (20:02) Every time you're struggling uphill, you are winning.(20:05) Every time you're expecting life to be easy and coasting, you are losing. (20:09) Rewire that. (20:11) Most people are wired the complete opposite.(20:13) And that's why they will never achieve their goals and dreams. (20:15) They simply won't. (20:16) And then they rationalize it later.(20:18) When you feel like you're losing, you are actually winning. (20:22) Because if your micro priorities are challenging, your macro life is uphill. (20:27) It's trending up.(20:29) It's like we want these beautiful views at the top of the mountain, but we don't want to have to climb. (20:34) It's nuts. (20:35) It doesn't even make any fucking sense.(20:37) I don't want an easy climb. (20:40) Fuck that noise. (20:43) I'm okay with a...(20:47) It doesn't have to be the worst every day. (20:50) Some days it's like, okay, the grade of this, not bad. (20:53) But you don't expect it ever to be easy.(20:55) That's why this works. (20:56) You don't expect it to be easy. (20:58) No.(20:58) There's some people who every time life is hard, they think something's wrong. (21:02) It's like, no, nothing's wrong. (21:04) When did getting rich become easy?(21:07) When people started making books on how to get rich easily. (21:12) Brother, there's a multimillionaire entrepreneur I know. (21:15) He's like, yo, when I grew up, we didn't even have a fucking dishwasher.(21:18) It's like, I know, that's how we should be thinking. (21:21) We should be like, yo, we got one car and the whole family. (21:24) We don't even have a goddamn dishwasher.(21:26) Remember when you used to have to dry your clothes outside? (21:29) My grandma used to do that. (21:31) When did we get it in our head that life was supposed to be easy?(21:34) The people who came back from World War II were like, they got it. (21:37) They knew life was atrocious. (21:39) We have so lost sight of like, Emily and I will watch Our Planet on Netflix.(21:46) It's a nature documentary. (21:49) Dude, nature is brutal. (21:51) You watch these lions eat.
Alan Lazaros
(21:52) No, I can't. (21:53) I can't even.
Kevin Palmieri
(21:53) You got to do it. (21:54) It is what it is. (21:55) I'm not making it wrong.(21:56) Lions got to eat. (21:58) You know, wildebeests, run. (22:00) Run faster, please.(22:03) The truth of the matter is nature is brutal, and we have so lost sight of that in our cushy life. (22:08) I can't even with that stuff. (22:10) I'm not saying I just, it's just inaccurate.(22:15) Life being easy is inaccurate. (22:17) I think it's awful to say, hey, you're good enough as you are. (22:20) Because people are like, my life sucks.(22:22) What do you mean I'm good enough as I am? (22:23) What do I change then? (22:24) You're powerless if you're already enough.(22:27) Oh, then there's nothing I can do. (22:29) Imagine you think you're amazing and your whole life sucks. (22:31) Well, there's nothing you can do then.(22:33) That's fair. (22:33) The reason your life sucks is because you're not getting better every day. (22:36) You can fix that.(22:37) You can work on that. (22:38) Isn't that fucking empowering? (22:39) It's like wonderful.(22:41) It's totally in your control. (22:42) Not totally, depending on where you live. (22:43) I get it.(22:44) But there's a lot of, there's a lot in our control. (22:46) There is. (22:47) There is a video of, it's just, all you got to do is go on YouTube and search snakes and lizard.(22:53) And there's this video of this lizard on like this snake Island, brother, brother. (22:58) It is the most intense video I've seen in my entire life. (23:02) I'm just going to leave you with that.(23:03) If you haven't seen it, you got to see it. (23:04) You want to talk about nature. (23:05) Holy shit.(23:06) This is the jam. (23:08) Okay. (23:08) Need a lizard versus snakes.(23:10) Hopefully something comes up. (23:12) Something will come up. (23:12) Hopefully it's the right thing.(23:14) I can't guarantee it will be. (23:15) All right, cool.
