Are you actually unfocused, or have you just normalized too much noise?

In this episode, Kevin and Alan challenge the way most people think about focus. This is not about doing more or pushing harder for a few days. It is about directing your attention with intention, protecting your mental bandwidth, and staying aligned with what actually moves your life forward.

They break down signal versus noise, the cost of misplaced attention, and the discipline required to stay focused when distraction is always available. If you have been feeling scattered, inconsistent, or pulled away from your bigger goals, this episode will help you reset your standards and sharpen your focus.

Kevin Palmieri

(0:00) You hear a lot of people talk about focus. (0:03) Focus is a buzzword in the productivity space, in the success space, in the business space. (0:07) And I don't know if anybody really has done a great job of explaining what long-term focus really looks like.(0:15) You hear the magnifying glass, I'm sure you've seen that before, like focus and there's a magnifying glass. (0:20) That is terrible. (0:21) I don't think that actually equates to almost anything in the grand scheme of things when it comes to focus.(0:25) So today, we're going to talk about what it actually means to stay focused.

Alan Lazaros

(0:30) So I use a system called P1, P2, P3, priority one, priority two, priority three. (0:36) And the best use of your time is priority one. (0:40) And then the moment that that task is completed, P2 becomes P1.(0:44) I want to talk about how to stay focused on the most important use of your time every single day when it comes to your goals.

Kevin Palmieri

Kevin Palmieri

(1:39) Next Level Nation today for episode number 2432, 2432. (1:45) What does it really mean to stay focused? (1:48) Got a new client the other day.(1:51) And this is somebody who I did a breakthrough session with a couple months ago. (1:54) They were referral. (1:56) And he said, yeah, let me get my ducks in a row, and I'll reach back out.(1:58) Bada bing, bada boom. (1:59) Awesome. (1:59) Cool.(2:00) And just a cool dude. (2:01) I'm a huge fan. (2:02) And he said, what's up?(2:03) What's new? (2:04) How's business? (2:04) And I said, it's great.(2:05) Business is great. (2:06) And he said, why? (2:09) Like, what?(2:10) Why? (2:10) Why is it great? (2:11) Like, what's happening?(2:12) Well, he said, how? (2:13) Like, how? (2:14) How?(2:14) Because I said, we've got a lot of amazing clients, just people I really enjoy working with. (2:18) And he said, how? (2:19) And I said, I've doubled, tripled, and quadrupled down on creating a positive experience for our clients.(2:26) I'm not going out finding people. (2:28) I'm really trying to serve the existing people that we have. (2:31) And that has been a benefit of people referring us a lot of clients recently.(2:36) And my main focus has been the client experience. (2:40) That's been my main focus. (2:42) And to the point where I, first thing in the morning when I get in the office, sometimes even at the gym, I like look at my WhatsApp to make sure nothing's burning down.(2:51) Last thing I do before I go to bed, or at least before I go upstairs, I look at my WhatsApp to make sure nothing, if I can solve a problem before I go to bed, before it becomes a bigger problem, I want to try to do that. (3:01) I remember when back in the day, I would be on a podcast and they say, what's your schedule like? (3:07) And I would go through my schedule and I'd say, after I'm done, my phone stays in the office.(3:12) And then I don't check my messages until the next day. (3:16) As my focus on client experience and client delivery has changed, that has changed as well. (3:21) And it's been very beneficial.(3:23) But I wasn't focused on that as much as I am a year ago, but I thought I was. (3:30) And that's my perspective to start it with focus is, you only know you're as focused as you've ever been when you're not. (3:41) And you don't really know how focused you actually are on it until you realize in the future that you weren't actually that focused on it.(3:47) It's weird. (3:48) It's a weird thing. (3:49) Sliding scale, of course.(3:50) I know that's not where you wanted to go, but no, it's okay.

Alan Lazaros

(3:53) This is, I mean, it is about focus. (4:00) I took a class once called signal analysis. (4:03) I've talked about it a lot.(4:03) I think this is the hardest course I've ever taken in my entire life. (4:06) I don't think, I know that it is. (4:08) It was, it was just awful.(4:11) It was brutal. (4:15) People who have never gotten a B in their life were getting Cs in this class. (4:18) It was just atrocious.(4:21) And I was one of them. (4:23) But it talked about, it was a signal analysis class where when I send a text to Kevin's phone, there's a specific code that my phone sends to a satellite. (4:41) And then the satellite sends it to your specific phone number.(4:45) Okay. (4:46) And it's a digital code that it shows up on your screen. (4:50) That's the most basic.(4:51) Okay. (4:52) The reason we're doing this episode is because of signal versus noise. (4:56) And I want to make it a metaphor that lands.(5:00) So assuming you're anywhere older than 20, you remember what it was like to have shitty radio signal, maybe 25 or 30, actually at this point.

Kevin Palmieri

(5:14) Well, if you go out of range, it's still, you still get a shitty signal.

Alan Lazaros

(5:16) Yeah. (5:19) I want to do like old school radio towers though. (5:21) So you're in the car and nine you're at 98.5 or whatever. (5:26) And it's like staticky at 98.6 and at 98.4 it's like static. (5:32) I don't know how to do static. (5:33) And 98.5 boom. (5:35) Okay. (5:35) It's in. (5:35) It's crystal clear.(5:36) Good. (5:36) Awesome. (5:37) You go under a bridge.(5:38) All of a sudden it's staticky again. (5:40) That's the metaphor for all the persons, places, things, and ideas in your consciousness, in your awareness, in your focus that are outside of alignment with your goals is noise. (5:52) And the signal is anything and everything that is constructive towards your goals in this metaphor.(5:59) Now, all of us are human beings who have dynamic lives that need to focus on things that are outside of alignment with our goals sometimes. (6:08) However, the more you pay attention to things in alignment with your goals, the more likely you achieve them faster. (6:19) And then you can set even bigger, higher goals.(6:21) And it's like, well, why do that? (6:25) Most of the quality of life that people want is actually a by-product of meaningful goals. (6:32) So for example, if you have an income goal to make six figures, for example, and you focus on that income goal, 90% of your time, effort, and attention goes to that income goal.(6:44) Making six figures is on the path to financial freedom. (6:48) And financial freedom is something that people typically want. (6:54) So what I want this episode to be is everyone checking in with how much noise they allow into their brain.(7:02) I try really hard. (7:05) You remember when we went to high school and we did a career day on podcasting? (7:10) And one of the girls in the back asked, what do you think about what's going on with Kim and Kanye?(7:16) Brutal. (7:17) And honestly, again, she's a young girl, so I'm going to say this with a grain of salt. (7:21) If that's your question, you're in some serious trouble.(7:25) We talked about life, personal development, professional development, self-improvement, goals, dreams, aspirations, and that's your fucking question? (7:33) Like, again, she's 14, so I get it. (7:36) But dude, I would never have asked a question that stupid, to be completely honest.(7:40) Now, why am I saying this? (7:41) She's a 14-year-old girl. (7:42) I'm not trying to be mean.(7:43) I didn't say this to her face, but I did say this. (7:46) I said, honestly, I don't think anything about Kim and Kanye. (7:51) That's not in my circle of concern, I think is what I said to her.(7:57) You have to be very careful about what you allow into your circle of concern because you only have so much consciousness. (8:03) You only have so much awareness. (8:05) You only have so much brain power.(8:07) And right now, 99.9% of all persons, places, things, and ideas have nothing to do with any of your goals. (8:16) And so you got to dial that up. (8:17) It's never going to be 100.(8:18) Nobody can 100% focus on their goals. (8:21) I think Michael Phelps was probably the closest, and that's why he had serious mental health issues. (8:25) But he focused probably 99% of his time, effort, and money into just that one narrow swimming area.(8:31) That's an extreme example. (8:33) But nobody's going to... (8:35) I'm not saying to do that.(8:36) You can do that. (8:37) I think that would be awesome if you did that. (8:39) But it doesn't mean...(8:42) What would be the opposite? (8:42) So Michael Phelps is the far extreme of nothing but swimming matters, missed every dance, missed every five years straight in the pool, missed the holidays, birthdays, missed everything else. (8:52) Nothing mattered but swimming.(8:53) Okay, well, can't we get a little closer, little closer, little closer compared to, hey, what do you think about what's going on with Kim and Kanye? (9:01) It's like, I don't think about what's going on with Kim and Kanye. (9:03) That's why I'm not...(9:05) That's why my life is going well. (9:07) If I was worried about what's going on with Kim and Kanye, my life would not be nearly as constructive or constructed.

Kevin Palmieri

(9:13) I had a call with an awesome client today. (9:16) I've been working with a lot of doctors lately, which is fucking weird for me. (9:20) Like, hey, what's up, doc?(9:21) It's weird. (9:22) I talked to a PhD and a doctor today. (9:25) Like, what the fuck?(9:26) What are we doing? (9:27) I love how your face gets whenever you talk about this. (9:29) Well, it's because it's just strange.(9:31) What has my life become? (9:32) My goodness. (9:35) And essentially, this person, they just started with us recently and they're very new to...(9:42) Obviously, they're very well-educated and they're just very dialed in. (9:45) They're very next level. (9:47) And they don't really know the podcasting YouTube space.(9:50) And the call we had today, I was very much like, look, based on what you're looking for, based on the results you're looking for, you really have to quadruple down focus on these things. (10:01) And permission to be hardcore, I don't really care. (10:05) I don't really care.(10:05) I don't want to hear it. (10:07) And they're like, that's exactly what I want to hear. (10:08) It's amazing.(10:09) And I said, great. (10:11) And this is going to require a different level of dedication. (10:15) If you really want to get to the point where this is your full time thing, I don't really care that you don't want to do social.(10:22) I don't want to do it either. (10:24) I don't really care. (10:25) Your focus is going to have to be more on this all the time.(10:30) And that's an unfortunate conversation at times for people. (10:34) I think when you raise somebody's awareness to like, hey, I know what it looks like on the internet. (10:40) And then I know when you get behind the scenes, it's a little bit different.(10:44) Again, if you don't follow us on social, if you're not in any of our WhatsApp groups, if you've never been through group coaching, if you've never been to a masterclass, if you've never been to a book club, you see a version. (10:58) And I'm not saying we're pretending to be something. (11:00) I'm not saying that.(11:01) But like, if you've never worked out with me or you've never gone on a run with Alan, it's different. (11:06) Right? (11:06) It's different.(11:07) It's not the same. (11:09) And the closer you get to somebody, the closer you get to the reality of it. (11:15) I, the last thing I think about before I go to bed is client stuff every night.(11:20) Not necessarily like a stressful way. (11:22) I'm not like stress like, oh my God, I don't, it's more like, okay, I'm going to make sure that gets done. (11:26) Some of my best thinking happens right before I go to bed.(11:29) Luckily I fall asleep after, which is nice, but I think for, I don't know. (11:36) I think in the past I wasn't as focused. (11:40) I know I wasn't as focused as I am now on the things that I'm focused on, but I thought I was when we first met.

Alan Lazaros

(11:47) And again, I, I really don't want it to come off like I'm picking on Kev cause I'm not. (11:50) I just, these are lessons. (11:52) These are great lessons.(11:53) I remember when I would hang out with you, it would be very obvious that I was more focused on our goals than you. (12:00) The best way to describe this is Kev is really good. (12:04) He likes to enjoy himself.(12:06) Like you're someone who can really let loose and enjoy himself. (12:11) And it's ironic how now I can say all this when now you're like pretty, pretty dialed compared to back then. (12:17) But like, it was very obvious that you, you live your life to enjoy yourself more than I do.(12:22) That was fucking obvious. (12:23) Okay. (12:24) And, and what I mean by that is cognitive invisible work.(12:30) Like a lot of people think CEOs don't do anything, which is the funniest shit ever because you seriously think CEOs got promoted to CEO because they're like incompetent. (12:42) And, and by the way, if they were incompetent, the business would go out of business. (12:46) It just would.(12:47) Uh, I was working for a company called iRobot and I just looked up their valuation there. (12:52) They went bankrupt. (12:53) It's like tough for me to see.(12:54) Cause that company was crushing when I left. (12:56) It was crushing. (12:57) And I know the CEO, but, um, he's no longer there.(13:01) And that's probably part of why. (13:02) But again, I don't know the story. (13:03) The point is, is like as a CEO, and this is just metaphor.(13:08) So you're the CEO of your own life. (13:10) So use the metaphor. (13:12) Okay.(13:12) You're the CEO of your own life, period. (13:16) So as the CEO, I am always doing what's called cognitive labor. (13:23) Always.(13:24) I don't get to just work out. (13:26) I have to think about today and tomorrow and the next week and the next year and the next decade. (13:31) And what we used to do versus what we're doing doing now.(13:33) Someone messaged me today. (13:36) Hey, are we still doing next level web solutions? (13:38) I said, yes, I need you to send that to Kev.(13:41) He runs that department. (13:42) If it has to do with one of our clients, then let me know. (13:46) And then you'll come to me if you need me, obviously.(13:48) But my point is like, when you and I used to travel together, it was obvious that I was holding the cognitive weight of our future more than you were. (13:59) And you were, you, you, you got us there. (14:02) You drove while I got to sit there and talk or think or do stuff or whatever or nap.(14:06) But the point is, is like, I think that that's one of the most unsung heroes of all success is your ability to let your mind focus on things that are important. (14:20) Like when we have next level live coming up, my cognitive focus has to be very different than when we don't. (14:29) And the bandwidth that we have in our mind is sort of like the bandwidth you have in Wi-Fi.(14:34) If there's 50 devices on the Wi-Fi at the same time and everyone's streaming Netflix, it's going to run out and it's, everyone's going to lag. (14:41) The same is true for the human mind.

Kevin Palmieri

(14:43) I have a client calling me right now.

Alan Lazaros

(14:45) Like literally just saw the text. (14:47) I have, they're calling me as we speak. (14:49) In hindsight, is it obvious what I'm saying now?(14:51) Whereas back then you didn't know, how could you know? (14:54) Right? (14:55) I, yeah, I don't, you don't really know.(14:57) Do you know anyone that you, first names only, or maybe you keep it anonymous. (15:01) Like think of someone who's wicked good at hanging out. (15:05) They're always present.(15:07) They're always enjoying themselves. (15:09) They're always laughing and joking. (15:10) That person is not going to succeed at a very high level long-term because they're too focused on enjoying themselves.(15:20) Emilia is, it's very, we have to like shut down and to enjoy ourselves. (15:26) We have to consciously decide like we're going to enjoy ourselves now because we're always under the tutelage of our goals and tutelage. (15:34) But the point I'm making is like focus and signal versus noise.(15:39) You have to be constantly, when you're 14, yeah, you can think about Kim and Kanye. (15:44) That's fine. (15:44) But if you, but if you're 34 and you're focused on Kim and Kanye, you, you need to focus on your responsibilities, your life, your family, your goals, your dreams, your physique, your, you can't, you can't spend more time following other people's lives than leading your own.(16:02) And I feel like that is harder in the 21st century than ever before because there's so much noise. (16:09) There's so much noise. (16:10) I work really hard to try to make sure this podcast is kind of no nonsense.(16:15) Now we still have to make it entertaining. (16:17) We still have to have some laughs. (16:18) We still have a good time, but that's not the fucking point.(16:21) I'm not here to have a good time. (16:22) I'm here to make sure our listeners actually build a meaningful life. (16:25) That's successful.

Kevin Palmieri

(16:27) I think the hard thing, like the really, really hard part is if you are, let's say you're working at a job that you hate, I think your natural tendency, your natural tendency is to escape instead of like build elsewhere. (16:41) And I think that's why, because I see people all the time, you know, look, if you like fantasy football or whatever, like that's on you. (16:47) I like golf.(16:48) Awesome. (16:48) Right. (16:49) Great.(16:49) And if you're putting more energy into, there's somebody I know, you know, we've known them who couldn't post on social media consistently to grow their business, but they always post about their sports team. (17:02) Always. (17:03) Every time there's a game they're posting about their sports team.(17:05) So you could post on social media. (17:07) You just care more about your sports team than you do your own business or your own success. (17:11) That's on you.(17:12) That's on you. (17:14) But that that's a piece of it. (17:15) It's very easy to overdo the pleasures that we have.(17:21) You know, it's, it's very easy to, one of the reasons I stopped betting on fights is because you have to do research. (17:27) Like I shouldn't be researching. (17:29) Ah, yes.(17:30) When this person gets taken down, the average amount of time they're taken down for is a minute and 40 seconds.

Alan Lazaros

(17:35) I love the way you think now, man. (17:37) It's the best because dude, you used to squander so much cognitive function to useless shit with love.

Kevin Palmieri

(17:43) But with love, I do like some useless shit still.

Alan Lazaros

(17:47) That's fine.

Kevin Palmieri

(17:47) Yeah, that's fine. (17:48) But dude, I just changed the useless.

Alan Lazaros

(17:50) I would rather you just own it and say, Hey, I'm wasting time. (17:53) You used to tell yourself a story. (17:55) You weren't.(17:56) It's like most of what we do is a giant fucking waste of time.

Kevin Palmieri

(17:59) I just wish people would own it. (18:01) It's hard. (18:02) I think that's hard to own it.(18:03) We're going to do an episode on ownership, but it's hard to own it in the moment. (18:05) I think because you, I waste time all the time, just less than I used to. (18:11) Yeah, but it's constantly, it's different because you don't have a, as I think you probably have a higher, uh, you probably have a more painful relationship with it because you understand how valuable it is.(18:22) That's a whole different, that's a whole thing. (18:25) But in the moment, is there anyone, you know, who doesn't waste a lot of time? (18:28) I don't think there's a human on the planet that doesn't waste time.

Alan Lazaros

(18:31) Yeah, exactly. (18:32) There, there, what I will say is there is a correlation between success and being really good at not wasting time. (18:39) Yeah, it makes sense.(18:40) That's, that's, and you've noticed that as we've reached new levels of clients, you've definitely noticed like, oh, okay, this person like doesn't fuck around.

Kevin Palmieri

(18:49) Yeah, but they, I don't know. (18:51) I don't know if I've ever like, yeah. (18:53) And they still waste fucking time.

Alan Lazaros

(18:54) Yeah, they do.

Kevin Palmieri

(18:55) They still, everybody does honestly. (18:58) The most successful clients we have, they definitely waste.

Alan Lazaros

(19:01) I try really hard not to waste time and I still do. (19:05) I just am better than I used to be, right? (19:07) Yeah, same.

Kevin Palmieri

(19:08) So, all right, what's the, what's the 60 second takeaway?

Alan Lazaros

(19:10) Let me check my text messages. (19:11) That's it. (19:12) Waste less time.(19:14) I heard a quote once that I really love and I'll explain it better than the quote does. (19:19) Any, anything you are spending time on, I'm going to use investing, anything you're investing time on that is not the best use of your time is actually a waste of time. (19:28) What I mean by that is how can you always be doing the thing that's the best use of your time?(19:35) Well, I mentioned this in the opening, priority one, priority two, priority three. (19:39) What is your top priority? (19:40) Okay, right now this podcast is my top priority.(19:42) That's P1. (19:44) What's P2? (19:45) The next episode.(19:46) So the moment this episode closes, P1 is done and P2 becomes P1, which is the next episode on ownership, right? (19:55) This is called first off, they call it stack in computer programming. (20:00) It's like, first on, first off the stack.(20:03) The point is, is it's like a pancake stack. (20:05) You have P1, P2, P3, P4, and then P1, it takes off the top and then P2 becomes P1. (20:11) And so you're always doing the top priority and the top priority shifts as you accomplish things.(20:17) But there's never not going to be a stack. (20:19) You're never done. (20:20) There is no end to what can be done.(20:23) And that's the conundrum we all have to live in.

Kevin Palmieri

(20:26) That's a good 60 second takeaway. (20:31) I think one of the reasons it's so freaking hard to stay focused is because you have to stay focused for such a long time. (20:38) Like forever.(20:39) Like you're staying focused on the thing that matters the most forever. (20:42) Yeah. (20:43) That, it seems extremely daunting.

Alan Lazaros

(20:46) Yeah.

Kevin Palmieri

(20:47) It's very daunting when you think about it.

Alan Lazaros

(20:48) What would you say to you about that nine years ago? (20:53) Honestly- Because you nine years ago would be like, what do you mean? (20:55) Why would I, why would I want to live like that?(20:58) Like what's- Well, I don't want to live like you. (21:00) Agreed. (21:00) But it doesn't mean- No, no, I know.(21:02) There's a long distance between- I know.

Kevin Palmieri

(21:04) I know. (21:04) I know.

Alan Lazaros

(21:04) I know. (21:05) That's why I mentioned Michael Phelps because that's the extreme version. (21:08) Yeah.

Kevin Palmieri

(21:08) Yeah. (21:09) Yeah. (21:12) I mean, the benefits outweigh the detriment.(21:14) I think what you're, what if what you're already focused on for the vast majority of time is a reaction to the fact that you weren't proactively thinking about it. (21:25) Now, if you're thinking about money, maybe it's because you weren't thinking about money proactively. (21:28) That's, that's potential.(21:29) If you're thinking about, um, why can't I find a good person to date? (21:32) Maybe because you weren't thinking about how to be a better partner when you had that person. (21:37) Like that, I think that's a piece of it.(21:39) You're, the pressure of it is going to happen regardless. (21:42) It's either a constructive pressure or a destructive pressure. (21:47) I think I would have tried to explain that.(21:50) It's inevitable. (21:51) What would you rather think about? (21:53) I'm losing weight and I got to stick to what I'm doing because it's working or I cannot for the life of me get back to where I used to be.(22:00) I'd rather hit the first one. (22:02) I'd rather hit the first one because- Goals versus fears. (22:05) Yeah.(22:06) Yeah. (22:06) Yeah. (22:07) That, that.(22:08) And I think it's easier, it's easier when you feel like you're making meaningful progress to stay focused on the thing. (22:16) That's another reason focus is so hard. (22:19) It's like, you don't want to stay focused on that.(22:21) You want to escape into something else. (22:24) So that, that. (22:25) All right, cool.(22:26) If you're looking to stay focused, hyper-focused on the thing that matters the most, on the three things that matter the most, whatever it is, whether it's fitness, finance, family, health, wealth, love, whatever, Alan can help you with that for sure. (22:36) That is literally a piece of tracking. (22:39) You track the things that are most important to your success and it helps you stay focused on them every single day.(22:44) So reach out to Alan for that. (22:45) And if one of the focuses for you right now is fitness, next level fitness accountability group, I'm in there every day. (22:50) Alan's in there every day and there's people that are just crushing it.(22:53) So if you're looking to get around people who are hyper-focused on fitness, whatever that means to you, right? (22:58) You don't have to bodybuild like me. (22:59) You don't have to do miles for mindset like Alan.(23:01) Do whatever it is that you please to get to your goals. (23:04) Reach out to Alan and or myself. (23:06) We'll let you in.(23:07) As always, we love you. (23:08) We appreciate you.
