In today’s episode of Next Level University, hosts Kevin Palmieri and Alan Lazaros explain why your real priorities are revealed by what you protect, schedule, and repeat. Goals can sound impressive, but without daily musts, they stay fragile. Kevin and Alan break down how to identify the habits that keep your life on track, why consistency requires clear standards, and why every meaningful commitment comes with a cost.

This episode will help you look at your health, wealth, love, and personal growth with more honesty, especially when life gets inconvenient. If you want stronger results, start with the daily standards that have to happen no matter what. Press play before your excuses start pretending they need a strategy meeting.

(0:00) You can tell a lot about somebody when they are planning on whether it's traveling or they're going to be without their normal setup for a long period of time. (0:10) You can tell a lot about somebody by what questions they ask, what they optimize for, and like the first things that they search when they're doing this new thing. (0:20) Those details will make sense as we get to the episode.

Alan Lazaros

(0:22) What are your musts? (0:24) What are your non-negotiables? (0:26) What are the marks that you have to hit every single day?(0:32) You need to have absolute clarity on that.

(1:23) Next Level Nation today for episode number 2455, What's the Must? (1:31) Back in the day, there was a running joke at the company I worked for. (1:36) My boss would say, hey, this is where we're working.(1:39) And he would say, there's a bunch of gyms nearby. (1:42) And he would laugh about it. (1:44) It was like our running joke.(1:45) Because the first job I ever worked for this company, we drove from Massachusetts to Delaware. (1:50) I lived in a house with people that I never met. (1:52) I did a job that I had never done.(1:54) The first thing I did when I got down there is I found the nearest anytime fitness. (1:58) And there was a hole in the floor at this gym. (2:01) There was a legitimate hole in the floor.(2:02) It was very strange. (2:04) Franchises are supposed to be a certain standard. (2:07) It turns out they're not.(2:08) They're not at all. (2:10) Nope. (2:10) Turns out they're not.(2:11) But that was a running joke. (2:14) Where are we staying? (2:15) I need to know.(2:15) I don't care for any reason other than I want to make sure I can find a gym. (2:19) So I have some family stuff going on. (2:21) I'm going down to see my family tonight, right after we record this episode.(2:25) And I was already on Google trying to figure out, and this one of the reasons I want to do this is because it'll be the ultimate nostalgia. (2:33) I want to figure out how much it is for a day pass to one of the gyms I used to go to, part one. (2:38) And it's a 24-7 gym, but I don't know when they're staffed.(2:41) So like if I show up at six o'clock in the morning, is anyone going to be there? (2:43) I don't know. (2:44) So I got to call and figure that out.(2:46) But that was the first thing I did was say, okay, how do I get my workout in tomorrow? (2:51) And again, I'm not saying this to pump my own tires. (2:56) I have a physique that represents the value that fitness holds to me.(3:01) That, that, that's very, very important. (3:04) If you know somebody that's super focused on getting a lot done, they probably say, hey, how's the Wi-Fi? (3:11) Is the Wi-Fi strong?(3:12) That's something I'm always doing when Taryn and I travel or I travel. (3:15) So you can tell a lot about somebody by the way they plan what they're doing. (3:20) We all know somebody that's like, how many bars are, is there, how many bars are within walking distance of where we're staying?(3:25) You want to turn it up. (3:26) You want it. (3:27) That's cool.(3:28) That's, that's up to you. (3:29) You, you have your priorities in order based on the experience you want to have.

Alan Lazaros

(3:34) The thing that I've thought a lot about lately is hitting your mark. (3:39) Like what are the, what are the marks that you have to hit to make it a great day? (3:43) I've been talking to clients about this a lot too.(3:45) One in the morning, one in the afternoon, one in the evening. (3:51) Minimum in acting, you have to hit your mark. (3:54) Otherwise you won't be on the damn camera.(3:59) So morning, afternoon, evening, you have to have a, and this is the question that I ask my clients. (4:07) I've onboarded a couple of new ones and we come up with a minimum of three habits just to start. (4:13) One for the morning, one for the afternoon, one for the evening.(4:15) Habit one, what is the one habit that has to happen in the morning for you to be at your best? (4:22) Okay.

Kevin Palmieri

(4:22) What is, yeah, yeah, go ahead. (4:24) I don't care. (4:25) I know.(4:25) I didn't want to make it about me unless it was about me. (4:27) But you should. (4:28) Fitness, gym, exercise.(4:29) Okay.

Alan Lazaros

(4:30) Afternoon. (4:31) What is the one habit in the afternoon that needs to happen for you to be at your best? (4:37) No clue.(4:38) Yeah. (4:39) That's usually the tough one. (4:40) No idea.

Kevin Palmieri

(4:45) Not a clue. (4:46) I don't do anything. (4:47) No, I don't do anything.(4:50) No, I would, I would say, what do you think? (4:54) Knowing what you know about me, there's, I don't really.

Alan Lazaros

(4:56) Lunch?

Kevin Palmieri

(4:57) No, depends on the day. (5:00) Um, I have been more just because I'm not on like calls all day and I can eat and be in WhatsApp.

Alan Lazaros

(5:07) But for me, I need at least one moment throughout the day where I go downstairs, prepare for dinner. (5:23) Yeah. (5:24) Prepare for dinner.(5:25) Put the rice in the rice cooker. (5:27) Yeah. (5:28) Okay.(5:28) It's interesting. (5:29) It is a weird one. (5:29) The afternoon is usually just work basically.(5:33) Yeah. (5:33) Which includes a lot of different things. (5:35) And then the evening one, this one will be easier.(5:38) Maybe not. (5:39) Maybe I'm projecting, uh, in the afternoon, what's the one habit that needs to happen for you to be at your best? (5:46) In the evening.(5:47) For me, it's closed by 830.

Kevin Palmieri

(5:49) Yeah. (5:49) Yeah. (5:50) If I don't close by 830, the whole night will, will be harder to keep on the rails.(5:55) I feel like for me, that one's not as hard because I'm so morning heavy. (6:00) I'm so focused on the morning. (6:03) Bed by.

Alan Lazaros

(6:03) I also don't think that's as hard because you are wired in a way where you're counting for that. (6:08) Oh yeah. (6:08) Yeah.(6:09) Yeah. (6:09) You look forward to that. (6:11) Of course.(6:12) Of course. (6:13) Bed by 930. (6:14) For me, you got to pry Emilio and I out of the office.(6:16) Like we don't really, you don't really, but we love it. (6:20) We just, we, we have so much, there's so much more to accomplish. (6:24) It's very hard to close.

Kevin Palmieri

(6:25) There's so much more to do. (6:26) I like that in the morning though. (6:27) I like that in the morning.(6:29) Like I, today I woke up Thursdays for me are cardio day. (6:33) So I just walked downstairs and jump on the treadmill and I'm like, send a WhatsApp messages. (6:37) Like, I like that.(6:37) I like that. (6:38) There's something about the morning when I know nobody else is doing it. (6:41) Quote unquote.(6:42) It's not about that, but like, it's, I love getting up super early. (6:47) I just, I don't know. (6:48) I just like it.(6:50) And I hate it for most of my life. (6:51) But yeah, bed by nine 30. (6:52) If I'm in, in bed by nine, if I'm in bed by nine, everything's going to be totally fine.

Alan Lazaros

(6:58) So that's, everyone should do that same exercise, which is what's the one thing in the morning, afternoon and evening three habits that keeps everything else on the rails. (7:06) And I think that everyone should break their day into those thirds morning, afternoon, evening, back to the point of the episode. (7:13) What was it again?(7:15) What's the must, the must. (7:17) Yeah. (7:17) The marks.(7:18) So I think there's a macro must. (7:22) And then there's a micro must. (7:23) The micro must is each day.(7:27) It changes like the must for today. (7:33) We have to record five episodes, four episodes, total four episodes, total have to, because you're gone tonight and tomorrow and the calendar is full ish Saturday. (7:53) So, but on the macro, my must is coaching.

Kevin Palmieri

(8:00) Oh, that's why it's so hard.

Alan Lazaros

(8:02) It's there. (8:04) When you and I travel, we do it around our musts. (8:10) I think a lot of people fit their musts in after the other stuff is done.(8:15) I say schedule the musts first and then fit everything else around that. (8:20) And the must should be something for your most important goals. (8:22) I don't even think this is normal.(8:23) I don't think that's normal. (8:24) What's your most important goal? (8:26) What is the most important thing you have to focus on every day to hit that goal?(8:31) Everything else should be scheduled around that. (8:35) And I don't feel like that's normal, dude. (8:37) It's not normal.

Kevin Palmieri

(8:38) I know it's not. (8:39) I think it feels excessive.

Alan Lazaros

(8:41) I was on with a client earlier and she's only four weeks into the coaching. (8:47) So this is our second session, but we had a free one. (8:49) So third session, I said, true, false, semi-true.(8:53) This is the most dialed in you've ever been. (8:55) She said, yes. (8:56) She's down seven pounds, a little too fast, but crushing it, crushing it.(9:01) It's like, of course. (9:03) Why? (9:04) Because now you have so much direction.(9:07) You have so much measurement direction and accountability. (9:11) She gets coached by Amy and I. (9:13) She has two coaches.(9:15) She has a tracker that she tracks every single day. (9:18) She has one most important goal for the year. (9:20) She has her top three goals for the quarter.(9:22) She has her top three priorities. (9:23) She has her one most important skill and she's tracking every day. (9:27) Of course, you're going to be the most dialed in version of yourself.(9:31) Of course. (9:31) Now, if the purpose of this episode is hitting your mark, what is your must? (9:39) Your most important goal long-term over the last 17, 18, however many years has been fitness.(9:45) So you made going to the gym a must. (9:50) If you want to achieve your goals, there has to be daily musts. (9:54) I'm saying that.(9:55) If you're going to achieve your goals, you have to have daily musts. (9:58) Have to. (9:59) And the musts can be a minimum.

Kevin Palmieri

(10:01) Of course. (10:01) Probably should. (10:03) Right?(10:03) That's the thing. (10:04) I think that's the piece of it that... (10:08) What are your musts right now?(10:10) WhatsApp. (10:11) WhatsApp every day. (10:13) Email every day.(10:14) Every day. (10:16) Not just when I feel like it. (10:16) Some form of exercise.(10:18) Some form of exercise. (10:22) The podcast? (10:23) Yeah, podcast.(10:24) And then some form of connection. (10:26) And I'm really trying to do more of this because this has been the one that just hasn't got as much, but some form of deep connection with Tara. (10:34) Intentional, not like, okay, we both finished.(10:36) Now we can hang out. (10:38) Let's try to be... (10:39) Last night we were going to...(10:41) I said, hey, do you want to go to the movies tonight? (10:44) I don't know the last time we went to the movies. (10:47) And she's like, you know what we could do?(10:48) We could take the projector and bring it outside on the deck and we could project it onto the fence. (10:52) And I was like, love it, but it doesn't get dark until like 8.30 and you and I are old. (10:58) And she said, well, let's give it a shot.(11:00) And I was like, we didn't do it because it got dark and we were already tired. (11:04) But that was an intentional. (11:06) That was not...(11:07) I don't know, whatever time we have left over, we'll figure it out. (11:09) We try to make a plan. (11:11) So yeah, those three things.(11:13) And the reason... (11:15) Real quick, sorry. (11:15) The reason is I find that that makes life better.(11:21) The reason I'm not signing up to do an hour of exercise every day for the rest of my life is I'm not fully convinced I will think it's worth it yet. (11:33) I most likely will to... (11:35) I exercise 97% of the time.(11:39) Very rarely do I miss, whether it's cardio or whatever. (11:41) That extra 3% is a struggle for you. (11:44) You don't want to sign up for the free stuff.(11:45) I don't want to sign up. (11:47) I don't want to...

Alan Lazaros

(11:49) I don't know. (11:50) Brother, at the end of the day, it's your choice, right? (11:52) That's it.(11:54) I understand. (11:56) Yeah. (11:57) This client has exercised 30 minutes a day, every day for the last 29 days.(12:02) I love it. (12:03) Down seven pounds. (12:04) We crunched the numbers.(12:06) We're changing her calories based because seven pounds is too quick for four weeks. (12:10) But of course you're going to feel great. (12:13) You're going to feel great.(12:15) The, the, but, but it's, it's like, uh, I've done this before. (12:27) If I could sell you a pill that improves your sexual performance, improves your cardiovascular health, improves the way you look, improves the way you feel, improves your sleep, improves your relationship, improves your self-discipline, improves your willpower, improves your brain and body. (12:45) I could keep going.(12:46) Everyone would want that.

Kevin Palmieri

(12:49) Well, it's a pill, of course.

Alan Lazaros

(12:51) Yeah. (12:51) I don't, I'll never get that. (12:53) I'll never understand.

Kevin Palmieri

(12:54) It's a pill. (12:54) Yeah.

Alan Lazaros

(12:54) Dude, is there, and this isn't the episode, but maybe we'll do a different episode on this. (13:00) I fucking love pain. (13:03) I love it.(13:05) Dude, I was running uphill in 90 degree weather yesterday with rocks and like almost twisting my ankle. (13:13) I was like, this is fucking awesome, dude. (13:16) I, I think I love it.(13:20) I can't imagine not doing hard things on purpose. (13:26) Like there's no better feeling than like challenging yourself. (13:30) Now, obviously it comes with like, I don't always want to do it beforehand.(13:34) I'm always loving it when I do it. (13:36) That's the thing. (13:37) When I'm in it, it's like, yeah, baby, this is awesome.(13:41) To me, that's living like that flow state of just like, I am just fucking killing it right now. (13:51) That feeling, you can't get that anywhere else. (13:53) You can't get that from drugs or alcohol or any of that shit.(13:56) Like you can only sweat for that. (13:59) And I feel like the happiest people on earth, I think are athletes. (14:03) They get in flow all the time.(14:05) They're always in great shape. (14:07) They get paid a lot. (14:08) Not all of them, obviously, but like professional athletes, depending on the sport, of course, I just, maybe it's just, I I've always loved athletics and being really athletic.(14:19) And I don't think I, I lived the portion of my life where I was really out of shape and I fucking hated it. (14:24) But back to the point of this episode of, you should have one mark under each of these categories of health, wealth, and love, fitness, finance, family. (14:31) Like here's another must.(14:33) I've been consistent with this every day for at least 90 days expenses. (14:39) I've tracked my expenses every day for 90 days. (14:42) I'm two days behind right now, but well then technically it's not within a 24 hour window.(14:47) So that's not a daily must, but it's a must to always catch up. (14:50) Like I'm not going to miss a day of expenses. (14:52) Like I'm going to go through it.(14:53) And I think right now, and that's the other thing too. (14:56) Like I don't do that with the mile. (14:59) I don't run two miles tomorrow to count for today.(15:02) Right. (15:02) So some of them are within a 24 hour window. (15:04) When you wake up, when you go to bed, some of them are like, I do this every week.(15:08) You should have daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual musts. (15:13) You should. (15:14) And no one else cares.(15:16) That's the problem with this is nobody fucking cares if I run. (15:22) Some people shouldn't.

Kevin Palmieri

(15:23) It's fine. (15:23) Well, some people care, just not the right way. (15:25) Right.(15:26) It's a wild inconvenience to them.

Alan Lazaros

(15:28) Yeah. (15:29) It's 88 days in a row. (15:33) I feel so fucking good, man.(15:35) I feel so good. (15:38) You know, I feel so good. (15:40) And honestly, weight training is better for my physique goals.(15:50) The mile a day is just, I feel so good. (15:53) I've never felt better. (15:53) I'm 37.(15:54) I've never felt better.

Kevin Palmieri

(15:56) The thing I'm struggling with, with the running thing is like, I don't know, one, I want to weight train more. (16:03) Yeah. (16:04) Agreed.(16:04) And I'm not going to do both. (16:07) There's no way. (16:08) I'm going to go to the gym.

Alan Lazaros

(16:09) The days I do both are brutal. (16:10) Yeah.

Kevin Palmieri

(16:11) Well, it's that, but it's like, what am I going to go? (16:13) I'm going to go at eight o'clock at night. (16:14) That's what I do.(16:16) That's a story for me. (16:19) Yeah. (16:19) Fair.(16:19) I'm going to eat dinner at six. (16:20) You think I'm going to run my ass off after that? (16:22) There's not a chance.(16:23) There's not a chance. (16:24) So it's got to be one or the other. (16:26) Fair.(16:27) And I, and again, it got to be by my own definition. (16:29) I could find a way to do it if it meant that much.

Alan Lazaros

(16:31) Of course.

Kevin Palmieri

(16:32) Of course. (16:32) Yeah, exactly. (16:33) This is all each, each of us needs to make a choice.(16:35) I'm, I'm cautious. (16:37) I'm more cautious now than I've ever been to what I make musts because now I also understand how much has to happen in order for that must to happen.

Alan Lazaros

(16:45) Let's talk about this. (16:46) And then we'll go, we'll go to the next episode. (16:47) I know there's a downside to every must big in you.(16:52) There's every promise you make to yourself. (16:55) You have to pay the price and the price is very inconvenient. (17:00) When I was away this weekend with Amelia's family this past last weekend, no, the weekend before I had to run in the pouring rain by myself.(17:10) Like, and I love it. (17:12) I do like, I want it to monsoon and still be out there. (17:15) Like I'm just trying to be an animal, but it's inconvenient for sure.(17:19) Like, like waiting on me to have dinner, you know, it's like, it's super inconvenient and it's inconvenienced everyone else too. (17:26) I think that's why people can't stand people with goals because you have to inconvenience everyone else all the time, all the time, constantly. (17:33) Well, I have a sleep goal.(17:34) Oh, got to go take care. (17:35) Oh, I got to run a mile. (17:36) It's like, well, I guess we can't go anywhere.(17:38) You know? (17:39) Uh, I have to eat a certain thing. (17:41) Thank you so much for this delicious home-cooked meal, but I'm going to, yeah, let me pull up my Tupperware.(17:46) Yeah, exactly. (17:46) That looks good.

Kevin Palmieri

(17:47) I'm going to have my chicken and rice. (17:48) Thank you.

Alan Lazaros

(17:49) So yeah. (17:49) Anyways, what are your marks? (17:51) I always say this.(17:52) I need to say this. (17:53) One is too few. (17:54) Five is too many.(17:55) Pick at least three. (17:57) You can get to five. (17:58) I used to do the big five to thrive.(17:59) We joked, called it the big five to die. (18:01) You can't have 20 musts. (18:03) Can't.(18:04) Then you travel, then shit goes wrong. (18:06) Your tech doesn't work. (18:07) The power goes out.(18:07) You can't have 20 musts, but you can have three. (18:10) Let's fucking adult. (18:11) You can have three.

Kevin Palmieri

(18:13) You ever had jet lag? (18:15) No. (18:17) I went to England with a mutual buddy of ours.(18:21) I don't, I don't think we're buddies, quote unquote anymore, but how do you get jet lag when I nap the whole way? (18:26) The time zone. (18:28) Okay.(18:28) Gotcha. (18:28) The time zone. (18:30) We, this was something that was awesome.(18:32) We, I went to England with him and one of the first things we did when we got there is we went to the gym. (18:37) Nice. (18:38) Fuck yeah.(18:38) That's awesome. (18:39) Like that. (18:40) This, this is the last thing I'll say before we get out of here.(18:43) Think of your friend group and think of the person where if you knew you were traveling, they'd find the gym. (18:49) If you knew you were traveling, they'd find the strip club. (18:51) If you knew you were traveling, they'd find the bars.(18:54) If you knew they were, you were traveling, they'd find the bookstore. (18:57) They'd find the coffee shops. (18:58) I know where the coffee shops are.(18:59) I know where the gyms are. (19:01) Nice. (19:02) And I usually know what restaurants are close.(19:04) That's important. (19:05) I know where the wifi is. (19:06) You know where the wifi is.(19:07) That's good. (19:09) Uh, I have an electric car. (19:10) I have to know where the chargers are.(19:12) Right? (19:13) Like those are indicators of what you value, indicators of importance, indicators of what you want to make sure you don't lose momentum on.

Alan Lazaros

(19:19) Yeah. (19:20) Yeah. (19:21) I realized this recently, dude, there's no way my other relationships were ever going to work.(19:27) The goals were just too much. (19:30) Yeah. (19:30) Too much in quotes.(19:31) If you have huge goals and your partner doesn't, it's going to be much harder. (19:35) You and Taryn have done a really good job with this. (19:37) And I'm not saying she doesn't have any goals.(19:38) She has goals, but your goals are much larger. (19:40) Yes. (19:40) Yes.(19:41) And that must be really fucking hard for you guys.

Kevin Palmieri

(19:43) The, the hard part, like that's something you and I've had conversations with. (19:48) It's like, dude, I can't us going over and like fucking up and saying like, ah, shit, we didn't get recordings done. (19:54) We have to record till nine at night.(19:55) Like, I don't really care. (19:57) I don't, it doesn't really bother me, but she does. (19:59) Yeah.(19:59) But understandably, because if we have plans, it's like, Hey, I know everybody's going to like, I know dad's supposed to come over for dinner tonight. (20:07) Can't, can't have it because I, you know, we fucked up. (20:10) So we have to record.(20:11) And that's happened so many times. (20:14) No more credits. (20:15) That's the season we're in.(20:17) Like my, I, my wife has sacrificed so much to help me get here for sure. (20:22) And like quality time and all that. (20:24) And I like, I just want to pay her back.(20:26) I want to pay her back with quality time. (20:27) I think she deserves it. (20:29) But yeah.(20:30) And again, that's a fine line too. (20:33) Well, she, I mean, it had, dude, I can only imagine what it's like to be in her position. (20:38) Yeah, no, I think it's good.(20:39) It's great. (20:39) Like I can only imagine because I was, I was in, I was in her position to a degree working with you. (20:45) It's like, I don't really know what's going to happen.(20:49) Like we're going to see, we're going to see what happens, you know? (20:52) So yeah. (20:53) Like you want to talk to underestimate that a hundred percent.(20:57) Yeah, of course. (20:58) Just like I underestimate things on your end. (21:00) Right.(21:00) You, I couldn't, you couldn't possibly know just like I couldn't possibly know. (21:03) There's gotta be an episode in there. (21:05) We'll do it.(21:06) I don't know what it is, but like walk a mile in my shoes, you son of a bitch. (21:09) Something like that can be the title right there. (21:11) You like that?(21:12) Walk a mile in my shoes, you son of a bitch. (21:14) All right, cool. (21:16) If you, number one, need to identify your musts.(21:18) Number two, need to double, triple down on staying consistent with them. (21:22) Reach out to Alan for coaching. (21:23) He is the best in the world at that.(21:24) He can help you with that. (21:25) If one of your musts is exercising every day or exercising more frequently or getting results for the first time in maybe a long time or ever next level fitness accountability group, Alan and I are in there every day. (21:35) A flex for the cameras.(21:36) We love fitness. (21:37) That's why we're it so much. (21:39) That's why we're fitness finance family.(21:41) Like there's a reason we, we love this and uh, it's one of those keystone habits. (21:45) It's, it's amazing to do and it makes everything better. (21:47) New podcast logo, baby.(21:49) Yes. (21:50) I had to make sure you don't look too much more Jack than I in that. (21:53) You always have your arms crossed.(21:54) You know what that is.

Alan Lazaros

(21:55) You sly fox cross.

Kevin Palmieri

(21:57) You sly fox pushing on those biceps and triceps. (22:01) All right squad. (22:02) Regular pose.(22:03) Yeah, that's what, that's, that's what they all say. (22:05) As always, we love you.
