(0:00) I have been using my cell phone as my alarm clock for the last like couple weeks and it's extremely (0:08) weird for me because my phone never ever ever ever ever makes noise to the point where my (0:15) so we have i don't know if you still have it i used to have roboblocker my phone was on do not (0:21) disturb when i would try to like activate a credit card or do something that required them to call (0:28) me back i couldn't do it because they could not actually contact me and it was the fucking best (0:34) also the worst but it's the best for productivity and peace for sure i was on with a client earlier
Alan Lazaros
(0:40) and i i said have you ever heard of digital hygiene and she said no and i said how many (0:45) social media apps do you use and she said all of them and i was like okay that's where we gotta (0:49) start i said uh which one do we delete she's like delete i said yeah which which one we need to (0:55) we we picked tiktok (0:59) we are distracted on average every three minutes in the 21st century it takes at least 11 minutes (1:04) to get back in the flow most of us are never reaching a state of being in the zone welcome

(1:55) university next level nation today for episode number 2485 your life needs to be on do not (2:04) disturb i was with a client recently who i very much enjoyed i enjoyed my time with this client (2:10) but it was very different from me because every time the phone rang it went off every message (2:17) every text message every email it was just binging dinging ringing clinging binging whatever (2:23) all the ings now for this person i don't know does their phone need to be on more maybe we have a (2:31) mutual client his phone's always on do not disturb and it's a fucking issue you can't ever get ahold (2:37) of this dude like never you can't you cannot get a hold of him almost no matter what he'll call (2:43) you back eventually it's kind of a pain but i also am willing to bet he is way less distracted (2:48) than most people for sure so on do not disturb you i mean you can do that on your phone if you can do (2:55) that with your life to the degree that it is sustainable for you like obviously if you have (2:59) kids it's different there's emergency contacts and emergency bypass and all that but just as an
Alan Lazaros
(3:05) example the uh this is something that i i didn't realize how extreme i am on this and every now and (3:18) then i get reminded so i want i want the first thing that i say to be you start at zero and (3:24) then you go to one and then two and then three so i'm i'm a 10 on this i have recently realized (3:32) i i showed this client my home screen there's no colors and there's no notifications (3:40) the only thing i have on my phone right now is a timer and then i have rabbit hole in the upper (3:47) left corner and it has instagram facebook messenger gmail whatsapp and texts and all (3:56) notifications are turned off i do have roboblocker as well now why does this matter (4:03) it this is something that i am certain will help you be more successful okay let me let me ask you (4:16) this kev when you meet someone and let's say you're not worried about their feelings at all they're (4:24) not going to hear this you just are you had to bet on them you had to bet you're betting on people (4:30) this person's going to be successful and this person's going to hit their goals and you had to (4:34) bet money and you had bet me and you had to pick five people you know will hit their goals (4:39) and and you have to pick carefully and something horrible happens to you if you don't pick right (4:44) okay all right what are the top three things you look for in this specifically or just in general
Kevin Palmieri
(4:54) in general one is it's hard because i'm fucking not as dialed in one is like let me swipe on (5:07) your phone and see how many notifications you have and see how many are unread and see (5:11) how many emails you have and see like let me take a look at how many open tabs you have in (5:16) your mind right now that and again i'm throwing stones from a glass house because i have 100 (5:23) emails right now that need to get batched like i understand but it all used yeah yeah travel (5:28) is always fucking terrible yeah so hard to keep up with everything but again that's on me i need (5:32) to be better for sure that's one for sure second one give uh let me see what your algorithm is on (5:45) social media like what is your for you page look like and then what's in your audible and or book (5:50) account what are you watching listening to nice that would be the second one and then if there (5:57) was a way i don't know if you could to find out like how much time on task you are that would be (6:04) that would probably be the number one honestly like how much time are you spending (6:08) on task per day so i i don't know if i had to judge you i'd say you'd be fairly successful kid
Alan Lazaros
(6:14) you know you know what i mean thank you you know but uh good stuff good stuff i thought you would (6:21) throw self-belief in there i i wanted you were more looking for like indicators of self yeah (6:26) i wanted if you couldn't get to know them you could only see yeah the outside yeah (6:32) um i was going to go self-belief number one number two is your ability to stay focused (6:41) how good are you at staying focused and then number three would be tracking do you measure (6:53) i was on with a client earlier and she's like is that it and i was like yeah you said you wanted (6:57) to dial in your spending right and she's like yeah and i said just track it she's like (7:04) what should i do differently you'll see just track it because when you go in and go 20 25 23 (7:11) it's like i didn't fucking need that like i screenshot kev starbucks again man i haven't (7:16) gotten well no i know you have it you have it but why right because because i screenshot it yeah (7:21) because you screenshot it but that's the thing is like if you track i i don't know why we don't do (7:31) i'll never understand it can you imagine a sports team that doesn't track stats you know you know
Kevin Palmieri
(7:38) the interesting thing about that though many people don't like the direction of sports because they (7:45) track everything and it's making it less exciting in their eyes yeah that's it's less entertaining (7:50) or whatever so i do understand why people don't do it it like changes the it changes the way (7:56) you play the game so human beings want to wing it i think human beings want to have some fun (8:03) yeah yeah fair and it's not fun dude i literally was fun we're talking about success well no but (8:10) you said you said human beings want to wing it i'm not saying i don't think they want to wing it (8:14) when i was at the airport it was like what am i i need to eat something it's like what's the (8:17) cheapest thing here it's like interesting let me go i'm gonna get a fucking cold wrap it's like i (8:23) don't i didn't want to spend money i just didn't want to spend money it's like okay should i though (8:29) i've been up all day i'm not going to get home until one i should probably like eat something (8:33) that has some substance to it and it's also the last day of before the 10 pound 10 week challenge
Alan Lazaros
(8:38) i get shake shack so that's good but okay so so if this is about goal achievement yes because that's (8:47) what the premise was you went and looked at their phone agreed absolutely look at their car look at (8:52) their home conscientiousness you look at look at how dialed in they are but that's the thing is
Kevin Palmieri
(9:02) like well okay what are the what are the dials what are the indicators of dials i think it's
Alan Lazaros
(9:09) focus is one of them so so what are the indicators of focus what are the indicators of focus let's (9:13) have a candid conversation about this like i've i've i remember there was times in the past where (9:18) we traveled together i was like oh we are built different you'd be proud of me this time i (9:22) don't doubt it yeah and you're more successful now it's great but like there was times when we (9:27) traveled in the past i'm not throwing shade where it was like oh my god yeah it's four o'clock
Kevin Palmieri
(9:31) fucking shit time to shut down baby what do you want doms we're getting domicile what do we get
Alan Lazaros
(9:35) but it's not even that it's it's the indicator like emilia tells this story uh she was with (9:43) someone and she like she was scrolling on tiktok and emilia and i talked about it and she's like (9:50) and i was like ah i know what is you got to go through the layers it's not about scrolling on (9:58) tiktok it's about how lackadaisical you are with your time that that dude you i don't waste a (10:06) fucking moment brother and and the people that are successful do not waste time that guy you're (10:12) talking about who's always uh on silent nine million last year right going for 12 this year (10:19) great the dude doesn't waste time now he looks like he does but i'm telling you right now he (10:27) he is always building something always and emily and i would talk about this a lot and i don't (10:31) want it to be about us you never see her not building never she's always moving something (10:39) forward like she sent me three properties today already like she's never dude your goals (10:48) require you to use your time effectively and if i had to pick one instead of three it would be how (10:56) constructive do you use your time and maybe that's where we could go if i witness you wasting time (11:06) it tells me a lot about you and i'm not judging you from an intrinsic value as a human being i (11:11) mean it tells me about your chances of hitting your goals the person who i'm the most certain (11:15) of all my clients is going to hit her goals wastes the least time it's not an accident (11:21) no it's it's you don't waste as much time as you used to used to waste a lot of time (11:25) dude i almost want you to roast yourself like tell me about back in the day like dude like you wanted (11:31) to be successful you wanted to be wealthy not a fucking chance brother i geez um i mean i definitely
Kevin Palmieri
(11:41) spent a ton of time on social media i was scrolling social media all the time i was in text groups i (11:49) was texting all the time i had phones on my i games on my phone for sure i was playing playstation
Alan Lazaros
(11:55) every night uh if you were coaching kev because i don't i don't want i don't really just want (12:04) every episode to be kev bash yourself like but coach yourself like very practical take feelings (12:10) out of it because dude there's a there's a young man listening to this that is doing all that (12:17) for sure and it's like yo you don't understand how detrimental that is to your future i so i think
Kevin Palmieri
(12:25) this was the disconnect for me it was like with the time you are putting in and again i know how (12:31) silly this might sound with the with the time you are putting in you are way more effective (12:37) and productive with the time you're putting in so you are ahead of you are making progress (12:44) sure but that does not mean you're on the path to actually accomplish your goals because what (12:49) you're not factoring in is you have to do more of that time and less fuck off time so right now (12:56) let's say you're doing let's say you're doing 60 40 60 grind 40 r and r right what were you really
Alan Lazaros
(13:05) doing in the beginning 40 hours a week is not 60 you still have 72 hours left over 112 waking (13:14) hours if you sleep eight what's the percent yeah so so let me give you this so so 168 hours a week (13:19) 24 times seven all right 56 eight times seven so seven eight hour sleeping right so 56 hours 112 (13:27) waking hours per week we all have all of us if you sleep eight i have less than that because i (13:31) sleep more than eight okay of the 112 waking hours you work a 40 hour week you still have 72 (13:36) fucking hours isn't there something we weren't including in that though (13:41) yeah showering shaving eating like you have 72 waking hours that like so 72 still exist yeah
Kevin Palmieri
(13:50) 72 available hours i was probably what would 60 be 10 would be 11 so that'd be 67.2 uh 67.2 112
Alan Lazaros
(14:03) times 0.6 is 67.2 you want me to do a 16 hour day we'll do 16 hour day no you always do fucking
Kevin Palmieri
(14:10) 16 hour days i need to think of it as eight why because that's the way i don't know kev you have
Alan Lazaros
(14:16) 16 waking hours if you sleep eight right 24 minus 8 24 minus 8 is 16 okay so what was it 16 times (14:24) 0.6 is 9.6 so it's about 10 hours wait what's 10 hour days maybe you were i don't know i don't
Kevin Palmieri
(14:32) do it's hard because it doesn't do the commute it's commute time right what are we talking when (14:37) we started this yeah why doesn't it what do you mean it doesn't include the commute time learning (14:43) in my commute it doesn't count learning doesn't count hold on hold on hold on learning does count
Alan Lazaros
(14:52) but learning doesn't count learning doesn't count isn't that the principle though that's (14:56) the thing yeah the principle is it has to be a constructive use of your time the problem with (15:00) this principle is what's constructive is completely dependent on your circumstances
Kevin Palmieri
(15:05) i'm calling my no i'm calling my principle out and saying it's not like it's not like a (15:09) eight-hour job it's the principle of if you have downtime how is it being directed that's
Alan Lazaros
(15:15) actually true for everyone they just don't know that no that's but that's what i'm saying okay (15:18) yeah i'm saying my principle is fucked up one thing that i'm i'm grateful we're doing this is (15:23) we all have 16 waking hours a day however much you sleep on average subtract that we're just (15:30) okay all of us have the same amount of time really think about this what's the difference (15:35) between me and you and joe schmo well let's the person who uses their time more effectively always
Kevin Palmieri
(15:42) we can we can do it though because it's going to be well i have to go to a job for eight hours a (15:45) day that's one so what's your what's your rebute of that that's one for and it's an hour commute
Alan Lazaros
(15:50) each way so i'm losing 10 hours a day on my job so then you have six six left yeah what are you (15:56) with those six hours now i'm not saying not to r&r yeah i r&r i've got it down to a minimum (16:01) of an hour a day what would be my repute what are you doing with the other six i think that's the (16:14) that's that's really gotta be and are you on task at work i'm leaving i'm leaving that out (16:19) completely like whatever you fucking hate your job it's not just the time it's the time you put (16:23) into the time remember when i used to work out for a half hour and you're like that ain't gonna do it (16:27) you were right and wrong you were right in the sense that i need more you were wrong in the sense (16:31) dude i was hammering we only could get 35 minutes the other day was it that or was it because you
Kevin Palmieri
(16:37) were walking tucker and i was like what the fuck yeah probably that best fitness person ever of
Alan Lazaros
(16:41) all time or there wasn't gonna be when did i say it was first of all you are combining goals man (16:47) i stopped that years ago obviously um you just spent the greg pletfussy thing yeah yeah yeah (16:52) okay fair i'm working on it anyways you were right and wrong you were right in the sense (16:58) that a half an hour was not enough but dude we did 35 minutes the other day because we had (17:02) we had calls we were running behind i was like oh my god i got way more work in in that time (17:09) because the amount you get done shrinks to the time allocated it's called parkinson's law it's (17:13) not an exact fucking science but you do have i mean even right now i mean we have 11 minutes (17:19) we're gonna get this episode done in 11 minutes so you almost have to (17:26) create deadlines for yourself each day and it's a whole fucking thing but my point of this is (17:33) it's not just the 16 hours it's how much you put into the 16 hours (17:37) even r and r i r and r hard dude like i when i r and r i'm like i will not leave this couch (17:44) for an hour i set a fucking timer like i i emily and i joke i will be useless to the world for this (17:51) hour this is it for me so shut down full shutdown i'm not gonna scroll because that's bad r and r (18:00) so and the truth is no one needs to do this unless they have big goals like michael phelps can't not (18:07) rest he has to fucking r and r well he has to dunk tank and and and ice bath and eat a certain amount (18:14) like if you don't have goals you're gonna squander time and you're not even gonna know it
Kevin Palmieri
(18:18) well why why wouldn't you exactly right you're gonna have to have a reason big enough to not (18:24) squander time yeah of course last night so i worked i got up at what time did i get yesterday (18:31) 6 30 i worked until i went to see my client at nine we worked until like 11 i drove an hour (18:37) and a half to the airport i probably worked for like three or four hours and then i was like all (18:41) right i'm gonna chill today like i'm not gonna get home till one i'm gonna watch a movie i couldn't (18:45) get comfortable it's fucking brutal but the whole time i was on my phone and whatsapp the whole (18:49) time it's not like i just put my phone away i got home no no we landed first thing i did was (18:56) text to taryn check my whatsapp check my email drove home an hour last thing i did and again (19:02) i'm not telling you to do this but this is what worked for me it helps last thing i did at one (19:06) o'clock in the morning was i looked at my whatsapp sent a few messages looked at my emails i didn't (19:10) have any messages to send there luckily and the first thing i did when i woke up was that that (19:16) i i know you're moving balls though that's the thing you're constructing but it doesn't feel
Alan Lazaros
(19:23) like it's it doesn't feel like what it used to feel like but that's the hard day when i would (19:27) witness you scrolling on social media without a purpose that was the indicator yeah and it's not (19:33) nothing against you i see people all the time it's not just you you you mentioned someone who was (19:37) working at national grid and you noticed them just like on their phone kick you know oh they (19:42) were just fucking chilling what does that tell you about that person's future that's all i'm saying (19:46) because i know what people are thinking like your lives sound terrible no no but you don't understand (19:52) the quality of our lives is actually really good and we like have self-respect and i'll tell you (19:57) this i want to sell it because it's better than the alternative i don't think it's great trust me
Kevin Palmieri
(20:01) but it's better than the alternative there was a job when i used to work my job when i fucking (20:05) called it quits and i was like fuck this place i'm not i'm doing the bare minimum you expect me (20:10) to get this done that is exactly how much i'm not going to get anything done more than that (20:14) i remember there was a time where we were just like sitting around hanging out and i was making (20:18) like 100 bucks an hour i was fucking miserable i was i felt it was terrible it was just like (20:24) this fucking sucks i'm not doing anything i don't want to do this i hate this yeah i think a lot of (20:29) people because what i think the most common thing would be well that person works at national grid (20:33) they get great benefits they're making good money they're not fulfilled at their job no they're not (20:37) fulfilled yeah they're not hanging out on their phones they're not engaged they're not there's (20:40) no growing there yeah so it's it it does suck and there is something about the human condition that (20:50) likes when you are making progress and i i something i don't know there's been a little (20:56) shift in me around like and again you can take this too far right like you can take this way (21:02) too far i don't want to be like hooked on my phone if i'm watching a movie with taron i want (21:07) to be able to do that but honestly if i get up to use the bathroom my phone's in the bathroom (21:12) and i'm looking at my phone you're moving some ball forward i'm trying me or at least making
Alan Lazaros
(21:17) sure it's not going backwards you and i yeah exactly you and i agree with this meaningful progress (21:24) is so everything like making meaningful progress consistently is where i think fulfillment is (21:33) because there's something about assuming you have goals that are based on your core values for your (21:41) future we've all we've all had days where we didn't feel like we got much done and (21:49) your life's not going to get better unless you make meaningful progress emilia and i that's a (21:52) love language meaningful progress like she loves it when i move a project forward or i get something (21:59) done or i buy this thing that we've been waiting on like whatever it is like her sending the the (22:03) properties like meaningful progress is an absolute necessity and and the 10 pound in 10 week challenge (22:10) thinking about it like why does why did 30 people sign up they want to make meaningful progress (22:14) they really want meaningful progress you want to know why it's going to blow it's going to suck (22:20) we're all going to have to eat less we're all going to have to exercise more fact scientific (22:23) fact except for the people bulking obviously but it's going to matter because we're going to make (22:27) meaningful progress toward our dream physique toward our goals that that's better than the (22:32) alternative the alternative is sit around and do nothing meaningful and it's just not productive (22:38) so i i do i think couch potatoes tend to stay couch potatoes i think constructive positive (22:46) contributing members of society tend to continue doing great work and i think we've all been on (22:52) both ends pick which one you like and yeah of course you can overdo it but you can certainly (22:56) underdo it too so so my three are self-belief focus and tracking that if you have high self-belief (23:04) if you are really good at modulating and regulating your focus (23:11) and you track consistently where you invest your time effort and money you are going to be very (23:16) successful you're going to be very successful and hopefully fulfilled as well you know i i used to
Kevin Palmieri
(23:22) want you saw this you so you know this i used to want her to be the dude at the airport who was (23:26) like chilling you know like in my comfies i still like my companies but i want to be the i want to (23:32) be moving the needle it was a dude next to me who was talking about something and he's like this is (23:36) a 600 million dollar deal or something i was like i don't even know if you're really talking to (23:40) anybody but fuck yeah like good for you but that inspired me it's like it's this dude's probably (23:44) had a long day he's getting ready to take a flight he's still moving he's still moving needles forward (23:48) right like i'd like i like sending an audio when i'm in between things but again you can do that (23:54) i do that when i'm golfing i kind of at times do that when i'm at the gym now which i'm trying not (24:00) to do but like i don't know you're evolving man it's good stuff but i you can't i don't want to (24:06) take it too far like the gym is my sacred time the gym is my i get very little sacred time the gym
Alan Lazaros
(24:12) is my secret you gotta protect the sacred time for sure right like so but again i'm comparing you 10 (24:17) years ago to now and it's it's night and day dude and and you had goals back then you wanted to be (24:22) successful you wanted to be an entrepreneur you wanted to be a successful podcaster and (24:25) the hard candid reality is not a chance if you stayed that way i did not a chance i didn't know (24:32) and i know of course and i'm not blaming you no no our fucking listeners are gonna know
Kevin Palmieri
(24:36) but that's the that's the lesson that's the lesson for them right is like (24:43) i can't i can't imagine it's going to take less than you think not a chance i can't imagine yeah
Alan Lazaros
(24:49) right like let's just say it's not it's not i know but like like anything ever taken less than you
Kevin Palmieri
(24:55) think some things have lately though because of momentum been easier than i thought momentum yeah (25:03) that's fair so that's why people lose it like that's why and those are the people you're listening (25:08) to on on the gram and yeah they're like it's you know i just wouldn't i don't know i just (25:13) i feel like i just wouldn't what would you do with your last billion (25:16) no i just put it in real i just put it in the stock market you know make 80 million dollars (25:21) a year and live off of it so it's not even that big of a deal it's wonky the whole thing's wonky (25:26) but yes so your life at the end of the day be on do not disturb what does that mean time on task (25:30) productive moving needle forward we're not saying you can't have r and r not saying that not saying (25:36) that you need to you need to you need to have r and r but it needs to be constructive r and r (25:42) like that's a piece of it and the goal of r and r like after this i told alan i got very little (25:48) sleep i'm gonna eat i'm gonna be chilling i'm gonna relax that's so because tomorrow i have a (25:53) big day right tomorrow i have a big day i have a big day tuesday i'm trying to make sure i don't (25:58) burn down for these opportunities that we have charge the battery charge the battery okay one (26:03) of the best ways to charge the battery honestly this is actually going to help you increase the (26:07) capacity of the batteries to get a coach reach out to alan for that next level fitness accountability (26:11) group we are talking about that a ton because alan and i are really dialing in fitness that's (26:15) one of our favorite things and it happens to be one of our favorite things that also connects to (26:22) growth like snowboarding for alan back in the day not necessarily going to help you be more (26:26) successful call of duty for me and alan not necessarily going to help you be more successful (26:31) but fitness definitely you play call of duty ghosts i played all of them baby call of duty ghosts not
Alan Lazaros
(26:39) as much as you other people didn't like it as much i thought that was the goat well we can't (26:43) talk about it too much because you'll get hooked on it and then you'll have hooked on phonics we'll (26:46) also we have group coaching coming up next level podcast accelerator if you are a podcaster who (26:52) wants to start grow scale and monetize your podcast we have done 220 people 22 groups (26:59) the 23rd group is launching in 18 days the link will be in the show notes to the landing page (27:05) it's for podcasters only next level podcast accelerator it is so much more valuable than
