What if your current results are not a mystery, but a record of the choices you have repeated? In today’s episode, Kevin and Alan clarify why your health, mindset, relationships, and finances are shaped by more than one big decision. They are built through the small actions you repeat when no one is watching. The conversation focuses on cause and effect, personal responsibility, and the difference between worrying about what you cannot control and improving what you can.
You will hear why progress often feels slow, why many people mistake consistency for luck, and how honest self-awareness can help you change direction before the consequences become harder to ignore. This episode offers a direct framework for assessing your habits, owning your patterns, and building results that hold up over time.

Alan Lazaros
(0:18) so this is about cause and effect and the effects that you want are the goals that you've set and (0:26) Let's focus more on the causes if you want bigger and better effects

Kevin Palmieri
(1:21) Hold on. (1:21) I thought I'm just riding the struggle bus here episode number (1:24) 2,523 your results are a (1:29) Receipt I'm gonna kick it to you because you came with the quote that gave us the context for today's episode
Alan Lazaros
(1:36) one of my clients (1:38) We coached this couple for (1:41) Let's say a year and a half or so (1:44) The female in the relationship sent me a (1:50) Screenshot on Instagram of a quote, here we go (1:52) You already have the body of your last 1,000 meals the mind of your last 1,000 conversations and the bank account of your last (2:00) 1,000 decisions nothing about your current situation is a mystery or luck based on the last episode. (2:06) It's a receipt Love it loved it Okay, listen Everyone has things that are completely and utterly outside of their control I'm gonna give a very very very harsh one that happened in my life I was completely out of control. (2:24) My father died in a car when I was two.(2:25) There is nothing I could have done about that There are so many things like that However and That does not mean just because I had a bad start doesn't mean I'm gonna have a bad life. (2:42) I Know some people who had a very bad start who created a magnificent life and I You we joked on the last episode if you listen to yesterday's episode I asked Kev at the end jokingly I said, you know, you don't think I'm lucky. (2:57) He said you know, not even a little bit I think you're one of the most unlucky people I've ever met in my entire life.(3:02) I (3:03) Appreciate that and the reason why is because it not only was it honest, but it's also (3:08) Important to see that some people aren't lucky and they still win (3:13) That's like very empowering (3:16) It's very empowering and and I had some fortune, okay, but for the most part (3:22) not great (3:24) like 90% adversity 10% fortune (3:29) But you can turn that shit around baby and (3:32) You can control what you can control control the controllables (3:35) That is what I'm focused on a lot of the time is control the controllables. (3:38) What's in your control what you say? (3:39) Think do feel and believe What you don't do don't say don't think don't feel and don't believe what you don't think is very important I have someone who is listening shout out to you, brother And I said how often are you focused on what you can control?(3:55) He said dude, I'm constantly ruminating and worrying all the stuff and he asked me He's like how often do you focus on things you can control? (4:01) I said 95 5 95% of the time is things I can control 5% of the times It's things that are out of my control that I need to basically berate myself to get myself back on track It's like dude, you can't do anything about that Alan stop worrying about it Go be the change you wish to see in the world. (4:15) You can't do anything about that dingus what you can do is be a better man and lead leaders and make change like Get it together man.(4:24) So he said I'm the opposite (4:28) He said I'm 95% worrying playing not to lose only 5% on what I can control I said brother we got to work on that (4:35) This person said recently they raised the YouTube monetization limit to 8,000 watch hours instead of 4,000 (4:44) Did you know that I did yeah, it was a it was very recently and this this person is a youtuber (4:50) Okay, this person is a youtuber and he said I can't stand how YouTube can just make one change and it changes everything for everyone (4:57) I said brother that I mean (4:59) Listen, we have a YouTube channel. (5:01) How much is that gonna affect me today? (5:04) Zero I didn't even think you're Same now YouTube isn't our only Source of revenue, but that's not that's not it.(5:13) It wouldn't affect me because there's nothing I can do about it And I want to talk about this You Have witnessed over the last nine years coming up on ten how much we focus on what we can do. (5:32) I And I I think that's actually something we do very well we are constantly focused on what we can do not what we can't and And the more people I coach the more I realize that's very hard for people. (5:43) So my point is with this quote You are in control of your choices.(5:48) You are in control of where you work. (5:51) You are in control of What you do and don't do no, you can't choose who's president. (5:57) I can't either every vote matters BS not true Mathematically not even close to true.(6:03) Okay, but I can choose what I do today and what I don't I can choose what I listen To and don't listen to I can choose what books I read what people I hang out with and where I go and and what? (6:13) I do in the world Just because you can't control Climate change doesn't mean you can't fucking recycle You can control things and you've got to take back control because the world's a crazy place 8.3 billion people You've got to figure it out quick. (6:28) You've got to that's it Fired up He's fired up.
Kevin Palmieri
(6:34) I think this is You you get one life. (6:37) That's it. (6:37) You do get one life.(6:38) That is factual information I do believe this is one of the reasons people get very Negative towards people that they haven't seen not everybody with some people Towards people they haven't seen in a long period of time who have made drastic changes Because it seems like they did it all at once when in reality. (6:54) They've been working diligently Since even before the last time you saw them but like you don't really know that because you are an outsider and I think that's one of the reasons like Going back to the lucky episode. (7:05) We we did.(7:06) I think that's like the The whole lucky syndrome things like oh, it must be nice. (7:10) Oh, you you just got lucky Oh, you have X genetics or whatever. (7:13) Sure.(7:14) I do have good genetics and That right and It's not just one thing It's not just one thing I think it's a series of things that most people don't see now Unfortunately This is why I think success is so hard. (7:33) And I think this is why goals are so hard because (7:36) you set the goal and (7:39) then (7:40) you don't get any receipt and or result for who knows how fucking long and you just have to keep (7:46) soldiering on forward and doing the thing and tracking the habit and reading the book and banking the (7:52) Track in the bank account and weighing yourself and exercising and fucking going out on dates and whatever journaling blah blah blah (7:58) I think that's one of the reasons is so hard because it takes so long to get the receipt (8:02) It takes so long and then by the time you actually get the receipt (8:06) You almost don't even care about the receipt anymore, which is a whole paradox of fuckery that I think gets people stuck (8:14) Yeah, it's so true
Alan Lazaros
(8:16) so (8:17) What do you say? (8:22) To I (8:23) Used to say this and I'm looking at Facebook memories and I'm seeing what I used to say and what now I realize didn't land (8:31) Everyone would would pay the price if the promise was clear (8:35) That's a Jim Rohn quote at the end of the day if you don't have self-belief and you can't reverse engineer goals and dreams and you (8:41) I did a master class recently on how to exactly how to lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks and in the master class (8:46) It was really interactive. (8:48) I had Amy poke holes in whatever I was missing because I just recalculate like I will hit on September 8th exact 190 pounds no matter what done.(8:58) It's already done. (8:59) So I don't have any uncertainty about whether or not it's gonna be worth it So, how how would you? (9:08) Do hard things if you weren't certain that you'd get the outcome That's the the thing that I want to talk about because it's better than not doing anything obviously, right it's better than just sitting there on your hands, and I think that there's something to be said to of like Is it is it mature to just give up on pleasure and just stop with that like?(9:31) Let me rephrase You are you already have the body of your last 1,000 meals. (9:35) Okay, so so if that's true Then why wouldn't you just try to get eat healthier from now on and Just trust it Just trust it. (9:46) I mean, it's obvious you are what you eat.(9:48) Well, there's nuances. (9:49) Yeah, but like It is there's some truth in it. (9:53) So give it a shot and then the mind of your last 1,000 conversations.(9:56) I mean It should say the mind of your last thousand books last thousand podcasts last thousand conversations last Thousand contemplations, but it's a way less cool quote, I guess Okay. (10:12) So like where is your mind going? (10:14) I I I Try hard to I told you the story about the Lord of the Rings book and I said brother like to a client You don't like that's not gonna help you that much.(10:26) I like Lord of the Rings, too I've seen Lord of the Rings movies more than I should for sure. (10:31) Okay, I can quote the whole goddamn movie That's I can quote a lot of the movie, all right, oh Sit down and quote the whole thing. (10:39) All right, shut up.(10:40) I can quote a lot of the movie. (10:41) The point is it is a waste of time and there's something that's very mature about saying I'm gonna waste time and I'm gonna admit that I'm wasting time instead of Pretending these things aren't true, you know, like The bank account of your last 1,000 decisions I've noticed people who waste money want to believe they don't waste money Okay, I'll give you a perfect example. (11:05) I'm gonna call myself out my Ordering is having a little bit of trouble while we were traveling charging It's got two days of missing data, which bothers me tremendously.(11:15) Okay, I Already wanted the five now I'm like Well, this one's not working optimally. (11:22) So now I should get the five Ellen. (11:24) Don't be a fucking child.(11:25) Don't rationalize it it's a dumb choice you could just suck it up and keep the three and You really if you don't need the five you want the five Own it like an adult. (11:36) Is it a dumb choice? (11:37) Yes own it and do it.(11:38) Anyway, or don't and shut your mouth, babe Kev That's me talking to Amelia in the back my head because I had this conversation with her because her and I want the five But we can't waste money It is a waste of money if my aura doesn't work I'm gonna have to email them and get another one because that would be worth it So if my aura actually breaks and I really can't use it. (12:00) I can't get my sleep data. (12:01) I will get the five I'm not getting the five unless that's true.(12:04) Why because I think it's mature to stop lying to yourself and (12:10) if you want to believe you aren't (12:12) The body of the last thousand meals the mind of the last thousand conversations in the last the bank counter the last thousand decisions (12:18) You're just inaccurate the people that I've seen that are the wealthiest they spend so little and if they do spend they invest (12:26) Like these are principles that do work if you work them and I just I think you're holding yourself back by not (12:33) Is it I'll kick it to you.(12:35) I want I want to hear from you like Tell old Kev why what would old Kev have said to this and and why why would he reject this? (12:45) Like what's the point of rejecting this when it's so obviously true.
Kevin Palmieri
(12:49) I think it's too much regret in a Such a small amount of time It's like it's too much truth and in a very so you're gonna give me Three and a half years of truth. (13:00) No Well, we'll just say three years of truth in one minute And I have to take all of the decisions all the conversations all of the exercises and or lack thereof All of the lack of courageous moments all of the lack of vulnerability and then I have to take in this moment and say like Oh fuck. (13:15) Okay.(13:15) I just wasted quote-unquote Did not live optimally.
Alan Lazaros
(13:19) I just think it's too much fucking Do you notice that people who don't there's two types of people that I've seen people who don't live optimally and own it and They are trying to optimize more and then there's people who pretend they live optimally and they don't at all there's also people that don't and Admit it and don't they claim not to care?
Kevin Palmieri
(13:39) Yeah, but that's another care later when it catches up You have to imagine but I don't know. (13:44) I feel like you maybe depending on how humble you are But how many people do we know that are way older and they're not making almost any changes.
Alan Lazaros
(13:53) It's almost like they It's almost like they don't believe in the principle that it's almost like there are people that that Back to the lucky conversation. (14:02) I know some people I'll keep it anonymous that really do believe That where they've ended up is is there bad luck and if I look at their life It's like it's clearly you made really bad choices Now you had some bad luck too for sure But the way you reacted to that bad luck was not to aim higher work harder get smarter Improve learn get better more humble more courageous more vulnerable. (14:27) Like it's almost like some people haven't bought it (14:30) They don't buy it, you know, and if you don't buy it, you're not gonna you're not gonna do it (14:34) If you don't do it, you're not gonna it's such an interesting (14:38) Cycle and and there was a time when you didn't buy (14:41) Into this idea and there was a time when I didn't consciously buy into it like personal growth self-improvement and personal development (14:47) It really does work. (14:48) It just takes so fucking long and by the time it works It's hard to point to like the book.(14:55) I read 11 years ago
Kevin Palmieri
(14:57) You know, the other thing though is like if you're living unconsciously time goes by seemingly so fast (15:02) So then it goes from like not at all paying attention to anything you're doing to paying attention to everything you're doing (15:09) And I think that's one of the things it's like, oh my god, this is way harder than I thought I was gonna be (15:12) Yeah, it like I know ignorance is not bliss. (15:15) I understand. (15:16) I'm not saying that Yeah, there is something about just like gliding through life unconsciously where?(15:22) It almost seems like there's no detriment to anything you're doing because you're not directly measuring the detriment and then eventually you get three years of Information in one moment. (15:29) It's like oh my god How do I turn around this this ship that is going straight towards an iceberg? (15:37) It feels impossible to slow down.
Alan Lazaros
(15:38) Those moments are so bad. (15:39) It feels impossible I told you the time I cried in the bathroom of the gym and then left that was nice That was the moment of like years of neglect in one moment, and it's so depressing But you have to face those mirrors all along the way. (15:52) Otherwise, you will get them all at once.(15:54) You just will it's an adventure It's an eventuality. (15:57) You're either getting healthier wealthier and more in love or you're getting less healthy less wealthy and less in love at all times I didn't make the rules like right now. (16:05) My life's really challenging, but I'm getting healthier wealthier and more in love And I'm making decisions in that direction when I wasn't my temporary moment-to-moment happiness or pleasure was definitely higher but my Future was lower and worse and and it was not as good.(16:22) So you I think there's maturity and choosing like It's kind of the phase I'm in it's like I'm just is there can we just give up this idea that you can have your Cake and eat it too. (16:32) It's so not true Just just own it.
Kevin Palmieri
(16:35) Like the challenge I would say though is If you not you the collective you if if Kevin doesn't understand the importance of reading five pages a day He definitely doesn't understand the importance of not reading five pages a day.
Alan Lazaros
(16:47) That's a great point or the downside the downside Well, that's what you should in order to sell something You're supposed to show the downside of not doing it, but you can't connect to the upside of doing it. (16:57) You can't connect it What's the book what was the chapter what was the five pages the compound effect the first five pages there is no magic boy There is no secret form.
Kevin Palmieri
(17:06) No, it's if I had to choose that would be it but you choose mindset by Carol Dweck Yeah, but you think I if you said hey I'll give you a trillion dollars if you can recite any of the first words in the first five pages I'd be like I have no fucking clue. (17:19) Will you the concept of fixed versus growth mindset? (17:21) You could articulate?(17:22) Yeah, it's the principle but not anything specific. (17:24) I couldn't tell you what five pages. (17:26) I couldn't tell you what five conversations I couldn't tell you what five workouts because the truth is it's none of them Today's workout would be one of the five because it's the last five.(17:36) I had that.
Alan Lazaros
(17:37) Yeah, it's not today's workout. (17:39) It's it's Working out. (17:41) It's not today's run.(17:42) It's being it's running.
Kevin Palmieri
(17:44) It's not today's Blog post it's it might be the worst done If you might you might have had the worst workout you've ever had in your entire life. (17:51) Guess what? (17:52) It's still awesome.(17:53) And it's great. (17:54) You're still moving in the right direction. (17:55) I know the torches moving in the right direction Yeah, yeah tortoise.(17:58) All right, speaking of torti if you're looking for slow, but steady Growth reach out to Alan for coaching. (18:07) Somebody asked me today They said what I was helping them brand out their podcast and their the stuff they're doing and they're like, what is your thing? (18:15) Like what's your promise?(18:16) I said we are the most the least sexy personal development self-improvement success podcast in the world But I firmly believe if you follow along and do the stuff for a long enough period of time You will be more successful than any of the other podcasts out there. (18:29) It's just wildly unsexy Wildness and like we love it. (18:34) Love it huge fan.(18:35) So that is what coaching is too. (18:37) That's what coaching is too It's not sexy. (18:39) You're not gonna go viral overnight you're not gonna be a million overnight, but you will get the principles and the fundamentals and the and the habits and the awareness to Do better and that's a good start and then next elephant is kind of bitty group for fitness good social media is Is Mental and emotional it's mental candy for your brain Coaching is kale and One of them is better for you.
Alan Lazaros
(19:08) And and that's it. (19:09) Yeah, I agree with you, man. (19:10) I'm proud of that I'm proud of that in the world of the of the increasingly sensational nonsense.(19:15) We are Less and less sexy And I'm proud of that shit. (19:20) I am I Yeah, it's good stuff.
Kevin Palmieri
