Self-awareness is not a limiting belief. In today's episode, Kevin and Alan examine why honesty about your current capabilities is one of the most practical forms of personal development. Growth does not begin with pretending every goal is equally possible. It begins with understanding what is true, what can improve, and where your effort matters most. Kevin and Alan break down the difference between a belief that keeps you small and an accurate assessment that helps you make better decisions.
They discuss why people often misdiagnose their problems, avoid uncomfortable feedback, or mistake time spent for meaningful progress. This episode offers a grounded perspective on confidence, identity, performance, and long-term consistency. Learn why clear self-assessment helps you build the right skills, choose better goals, and stop wasting energy on explanations that do not address the real issue.

(1:12) Welcome to next level University excellent nation today for episode number two thousand two hundred sorry 2,525 what's the difference between a limiting belief and self-awareness? (1:29) We have a new client. (1:30) I was at his house a couple days ago (1:32) we're doing some social media content business building stuff brand building stuff cool cool and (1:38) It's always weird when you meet somebody for the first time in person and they just like invite you into their house (1:43) it's kind of a strange thing a little bit of a strange thing, but we were talking at the (1:48) The dinner table and (1:49) As I got to know him more and more and more it got to the point where I said, hey you seem like you (1:53) Have a lot of self-belief.(1:54) He said yes, I definitely do and I said does that self-belief translate into other arenas? (2:00) or is it like very specific and I said like for example, could you be the best brain surgeon in the world and he laughed and he's like fuck No, absolutely not. (2:10) And I said, is that a limiting belief or is that just self-awareness?(2:12) He said well, I am extremely dyslexic. (2:16) I (2:16) Trouble picking up certain things (2:18) He said you would never want me to be your brain surgeon (2:21) And I said, but seriously though if you dedicated your life to it, he's like no (2:24) There's no way there are things that I do think I could be the best in the world at and that's what I'm trying to (2:28) Do well, there are also things that I would be essentially deluding myself (2:33) into thinking if I (2:35) If I thought that way, but it's a very conversation.(2:37) It was super cool. (2:38) First time meet this dude That's how you know, we're on the same page. (2:41) What a great conversation.(2:42) Those are the conversations I wish I grew up around same but I think that's an important thing to think about because there's a lot of people out There where if I said, you know, I that's not for me. (2:52) That's never gonna happen. (2:53) They might be like well That's a limiting belief.
Alan Lazaros
(2:54) You know, you can't sell yourself short It's like no, I understand I understand what you're saying But like that happens all the time when we were on the road together It's like well, you know, I'm never gonna be as confident as Alan and people like what do you mean? (3:05) Yeah, don't say don't say that or I'm never gonna be as smart or whatever It's like what if you're humble enough to actually own who you are?
Kevin Palmieri
(3:13) I Think I like to be accurate and just because you admit something like that does not mean you think you're Unable to grow. (3:22) Yeah, it's so funny. (3:23) You're like, no, no, I'm gonna get smarter.(3:25) Yeah. (3:25) Yeah, I'm gonna get more confident It's so funny. (3:27) It's not a car.(3:28) What if you didn't think that I'm not saying that I can't get better I'm just saying there there are limits here So I thought that would be a cool conversation trying to figure out what the difference between limiting belief and just having like accurate Self-awareness is Kev.
Alan Lazaros
(3:41) Have you have you learned at all about fixed versus growth mindset? (3:45) I've yeah, I've heard I've heard about it Yeah, you've heard it. (3:47) It's so fun, dude, but and again in their defense some people haven't right so I like this conversation because as I've matured and coached so many people There are some things that are not in the cards for certain people.(4:07) I Don't know if people like this. (4:09) I am gonna say it because I think it's a really really valuable metaphor Please don't take it the wrong way. (4:14) I don't mean it the way it could be taken.(4:17) I (4:17) Say there's 500 different breeds of dog (4:19) Anywhere from 300 to 500 according to my AI research (4:26) there's chihuahuas and Dalmatians and pitbulls and Great Danes and (4:32) There's definitely 500 breeds of human (4:35) all different cultures all different backgrounds all different ethnicities all different shapes and sizes some people are 6 foot 8 and (4:41) 220 pounds like LeBron James of mostly muscle some of us are Kevin's height (4:46) We are all suited (4:51) for a certain life (4:53) We do not have equal potential (4:55) We don't we never have and we never will and for some reason we want to treat everyone the exact same (5:02) It's mind-blowing (5:05) What is wrong with me saying hey, I'm never gonna be the strongest man (5:11) I'm not no matter what I did. (5:13) No matter what I do (5:15) I could never no matter how many decades I put in be the strongest man on earth (5:19) It is literally impossible and it's empowering to say that (5:23) Because otherwise I'm gonna dedicate my life to something that ain't in the cards for me (5:28) When someone else with no effort whatsoever can be stronger than me (5:34) You just it's self-awareness and and I have a quote that I adore a (5:39) Question that I ask myself constantly is one of my favorite questions.(5:43) What is the limiting belief that has disguised itself as empowering? (5:50) One of the limiting beliefs that has disguised itself as empowering is I Used to believe other people believe in themselves as much as I do It messed everything up. (6:03) Let me explain.(6:04) I Didn't understand that other people were saying things they wanted without fully understanding what it would take and then dedicating their existence to it so I used to say you can't want something and Then be upset when you don't get it when you're not doing everything in your power to get it and Kev was like no you can It's just you can't expect it. (6:28) And again, that's it, right? (6:30) I mean self-awareness self-acceptance self-improvement in that order You need to have self-awareness first and dude, honestly, man Nine years you and I we have done one thing very well for sure.(6:50) I'll give us this. (6:50) We've been very honest with self. (6:53) I Said this on a coaching session recently.(6:55) I said, well you were a fucking loser in high school like me, right? (7:00) And he was like, no, I wasn't loser in high school. (7:02) And I was like you played magic cards Like were you popular he's like well, no I said and then we eventually got there He's like, yeah, I guess in that context that was a loser.(7:10) It's like brother. (7:11) Just face it. (7:11) It's okay I said so you were getting all the popular girls and you were the the athlete and you everybody loved you He's like no not at all.(7:19) I said so you're a loser like me. (7:20) It's all good. (7:21) Okay, I was a nerd, too I'm not throwing shade.(7:23) I realized in that moment that he hasn't faced How much of a loser he was? (7:30) And Why does that matter if I face that I was a loser I? (7:36) Can assess myself accurately and then learn how to be less of a loser when you admit you don't believe in yourself You get to go to work on it.(7:44) Why would someone work on a problem? (7:46) They don't think they have that is the base issue dude. (7:50) I there's certain people.(7:50) I will not coach under any circumstances It's the people who lie to themselves You want to believe you're smarter than you are you want to believe you're stronger than you are you want to believe you're in better? (7:58) Shape than you are you're fucking delusional and I can't pop the bubbles of your delusion every single day. (8:03) We coach I Can't what we need to do is say, okay.(8:07) I suck at speaking. (8:08) Okay. (8:08) I suck at podcasting.(8:10) Okay. (8:10) I suck at coaching Okay, I'm bad at branding. (8:12) I don't know anything about marketing good.(8:13) I can work with that perfect now you're honest And and on the other side of that coin is I'm really good-looking. (8:20) I'm but whatever your things are, okay? (8:23) So many of us are so inaccurate in our view of self.(8:26) It's not even funny Be honest, are you short it is what it is women don't like short guys We all know that the majority of women there's been a study done where 85% of women know they did a hundred women rated 85% of men below average that means that 15% of men are attractive to most women and this is the 80-20 principle. (8:50) I was not in that in high school I'm certain of that and now I'm in that awesome Why because I admitted I was a loser and then I went to work on it Why would someone get better if they don't admit first that they suck? (9:02) and one of the things that I can't stand about being in my 30s is that now I'm actually pretty good at stuff and (9:09) now I can't I (9:10) Have to like explain like no no, like I eat Doritos and I struggle with willpower with my Doritos (9:16) But I don't want you to think I actually struggle (9:18) I'm really just doing that so that I can make a point when in reality (9:21) I could easily not eat Doritos for the rest of my life (9:24) It's I don't want to unpack all that.(9:26) I just want to look at where I'm inadequate I want to work on it for the rest of my life. (9:29) I don't want to have to explain all these nuances. (9:32) So To bring this home to the core point Fired up today.(9:36) It's important Just be honest with yourself about yourself. (9:41) Are you out of shape? (9:43) Good admit it Are you intelligent?(9:47) Good admit it. (9:49) Where do you fall on the statistical bell curve in everything? (9:53) People like why does that matter?(9:55) Why are you always comparing? (9:57) because (9:59) It gives you reference (10:01) You need to know the difference in a mansion in a shack (10:04) Otherwise, you're gonna live in a shack and not know the difference (10:06) You need to know the difference between a good economy and a bad one (10:09) You need to know the difference in a great job in a bad one (10:11) You need to know the difference in a great relationship in a bad one (10:13) You need to know the difference between an effective basketball player and one that isn't you can't make good decisions (10:19) Unless you have accurate data, you can't why are all these data companies trying to gain all our data? (10:24) Because they can make better choices. (10:26) They can market things to you.(10:27) You shouldn't market (10:31) Bras to me I (10:33) Don't wear bras (10:33) You need to market bras to women (10:36) You can't see yourself others in the world accurately unless you look at the truth the harsh reality (10:42) And what I've noticed is most people have a really really hard time being honest with themselves about their own (10:48) inadequacies and their own (10:49) Limits and they they cage themselves within those limits by not facing like I love when you say I'm I wasn't that smart (10:57) It's like good (10:59) Because now you're smarter than you thought awesome (11:01) But if you walked around can you imagine how different your life would be if Kev from from day one was like I'm brilliant (11:07) I'm so freaking smart (11:09) Trust me in some of the classes. (11:11) I took in college. (11:12) You'd find out real quick that you're not hard.
Kevin Palmieri
(11:14) It's hard to live that way Why hard because you I Don't want to believe No, I think it's more about the fact that like if you say that to some if you say that to the wrong person They might use it against you. (11:28) Yeah, that's true I don't there's a lot of people that understand they have certain understandings and self-awareness that they never share publicly Because they don't know how people can react. (11:39) I just don't care.(11:40) Like what are you gonna say? (11:41) Oh, yeah, you were stupid in high school. (11:42) So yeah, what I just said that I just told you that what else you get What else you got?(11:47) It doesn't matter.
Alan Lazaros
(11:47) It doesn't matter anymore Can you explain why it's important to admit that though? (11:51) Cuz I don't think you could have got here if you didn't admit that that's my truth I know people who think they're smart that definitely aren't and you're better off than them because you're honest But I think it it allows you to actually It's like okay.
Kevin Palmieri
(12:03) You're on a plane and There's something wrong with the plane. (12:07) Should we just talk about what's wrong with it? (12:09) Or should we just pretend it's fine?(12:11) Nice. (12:11) Well, you know if we say it's the wing like that. (12:14) Is it the wing?(12:15) It is the wing. (12:16) Okay, if there's something wrong with the wheel, it doesn't matter that much until we land We can figure that out by then But like why don't we figure out the actual problem that's going to hold us back and or fucking create some sort of tragedy Yeah, but it's it's hard when it's personal. (12:29) It's hard.(12:30) I had a conversation (12:31) So I've been doing coaching with Alan and Emilia separately and I had a call with Emilia the other day and she was we were (12:36) Talking about she's like take me back (12:38) Take me through your history and we're talking about something and I said I did pretty well with women when I was younger (12:46) Like I remember I one of my buddies had a girlfriend and then I showed up in an underarmor shirt (12:50) And then she left him for me and I was like, that was pretty cool.(12:53) And she's like, okay What was that? (12:55) What what lesson did that learn teach you and I said eventually it gets the point where I was like I got used for my body Like that get used by women for my body and she's like, is that okay? (13:05) And I said for me it was I'm sure She said are you really and I said, yeah because I think I probably knew it was happening I don't have a negative association with it.(13:14) And again, nothing ever nothing bad ever happened I was never taking advantage of or anything, right? (13:18) So it's different but like That's the truth. (13:21) You were never unconsensually taken advantage And here's the other thing too that only has such a Long runway.(13:34) I said that was in high school and then like After high school, it's different when everybody else kept getting taller. (13:41) So of course I leaned into that (13:42) Of course, I don't have a problem with the fact that that was the thing that got me significance that other people didn't have (13:48) Of course, I could I could control that I couldn't control my height (13:52) So that's another thing too is like if you have an understanding about something about yourself (13:57) You know what to double down on and triple down on and you know what you're not gonna be able to change.(14:01) Yeah Now this is the caveat for all this to that client's point could he be Some level of brain surgeon, maybe he shouldn't though But he should he shouldn't he should and that's okay.
Alan Lazaros
(14:16) Let's explain why You don't want a brain surgeon who isn't naturally good at brain surgery. (14:21) You don't want someone with a shaky hand Well, this is the meritocracy thing of like well, how come how come? (14:29) You know 20% of people make 80% of the money because The 20% of people at the top are the most competent not always they also could be deceitful and horrible That's possible.(14:39) But for the most part you want some level of a dominance hierarchy like you don't want Even right now you don't want Kevin and I to suck at podcasting. (14:46) Have you ever listened to a podcast that was atrocious? (14:49) It's so boring You want the best filmmakers to make films you want the best surgeons to be the best at what they do You want it to be imagine if everyone was a Navy SEAL.(14:59) Oh Now now it has no meaning there's no meaning when you give it to everybody I It's so important like if If anyone can do it, there's no value. (15:11) There's no meaning The only reason why a mansion is worth 1.4 million is because they're rare They're rare so so Why does a mansion matter because it's it's nicer because you you wake up and you have Running water and you have a new home and you can flourish within it and your family has enough bedrooms Like there's merit under this some of it is bullshit. (15:34) Like some of it is Louis Vuitton bag that has no actual utility It's just the logo.(15:39) And yeah, maybe it's made a little better. (15:40) I don't know and most of that's just fluff and profit margin Don't be stupid Utility matters but like don't get it twisted The iPhone 17 is nicer than the 15 and it's certainly nicer than some random Android That's not even expensive. (15:52) Like there's a reason why values are values and and I'm getting off topic but the important part here is Being I told this to a client two days ago.(16:06) I Said you don't have to like the social hierarchy. (16:09) I don't like it either But I asked you to learn it if the world was the way I wanted it to be that would be gone No one would care what car you drive. (16:18) No one would care what home you're in No one would care how good-looking or not you are.(16:22) No one would care who's taller or who's not No one would care what shirt I wore. (16:26) No one would care but that's not the real world That's like well, I really wish we didn't have to hunt and gather. (16:33) Well, you can go wish over there (16:35) I'm gonna go hunt and gather and survive (16:37) So so you can't be successful wishing the world was different than it is you can be successful (16:42) accepting yourself others in the world for what it is and then (16:46) You can change the game and the only way you can change the game (16:50) Paradoxically is if first you play the game the way it is (16:52) It's like listen, you can hate the rules of basketball, but you're not gonna win.(16:56) There's certain things you can't do about it and I Do wish people cared more about heart surgeons than they do about basketball players, but that's not the reality And and so I hold the duality do I think our values are completely screwed up and skewed? (17:09) Yes, do I think? (17:11) Okay, Alan.(17:12) Congratulations. (17:12) You think the values of the world are messed up. (17:14) What are you doing about it?(17:15) Okay I'm gonna make sure my values aren't messed up. (17:17) Okay, I'm gonna be the change. (17:19) I wish to see in the world (17:19) Okay, I'm gonna take responsibility for my part and then hopefully I can lead others to do the same and they can live positive lives (17:26) too and (17:28) All of us just I think that honesty is the best policy not in the way we learned it growing up (17:33) but in the way of success and improvement if you think you're good-looking when you're not you're you're gonna make bad decisions if (17:39) You think you're not good-looking when you are you're gonna make bad decisions (17:43) You're and that's just an example.(17:44) There's a million others. (17:45) Oh, I'm so photogenic. (17:48) Nope Like it's just very so.(17:51) So, how do you know what's true? (17:52) How do you know what's real and I'm gonna use this metaphor. (17:56) It's gonna be really quick You used to have a model why now we have a cyber truck if the cyber truck thought it was a model Why it would hit it would run into things Cyber trucks way bigger.(18:04) It would just keep running into things. (18:06) It has to have awareness of where it ends That's why this matters a self-driving car Needs an accurate destination location an accurate current location. (18:16) It needs updated maps If the maps aren't updated the cyber truck will drive into a freaking wall.(18:21) That's what human beings do (18:22) We make a wrong turn because of our errors in thinking because we think we others in the world are different than they really are (18:29) We drive off a goddamn bridge and then we blame ourselves or we blame the world or we blame the government (18:34) When in reality what we should blame is the true root cause which is errors in your thinking (18:39) limiting beliefs that you haven't accepted or limiting beliefs that have decided to disguise themselves as empowering like (18:47) Last thing promise there are no (18:50) deeply fulfilling intimate relationships with 15 year olds none (18:55) Why? (18:57) 15 year olds don't know anything There are 15 year old prodigies good at chess But there are no deeply meaningful wonderful marriages at 15 There aren't the reason why is because intimate relationships are a long game of experience where you have to learn yourself Others in the world and you have to figure out.(19:16) Okay, maybe I'm not as smart as I thought or maybe I'm not as articulate as I thought or maybe My love languages are different than I thought maybe I I've been coaching couples for seven years The couples that win are the most accurate. (19:29) They're the most accurate about themselves and their partner (19:32) They're the most accurate about their partner's love language and their love language and they are mature enough to admit it (19:37) They don't pretend they're good-looking when they're not they don't pretend they're in great shape when they're not they don't pretend pretend pretend pretend pretend (19:43) in a fantasy land (19:46) You get to pretend and not have it hurt you in a video game in real life (19:51) If you pretend you're gonna drive off a cliff on accident and then blame (19:55) Something other than what it is, which is just errors in your thinking. (19:58) I think 99% of all of our failure in life comes down to errors in Thinking about ourself others in the world Some epic monologues today Some very you're fired up Gotta you're fired up.
Kevin Palmieri
(20:16) Okay, what? (20:19) Last thing before we go. (20:23) How do you get somebody to understand this?(20:25) 60-second answer. (20:26) Okay, we can't have a fucking epic monologue (20:30) Because this this client just said it they said it there was no and again, it didn't matter as a hypothetical (20:36) But like if somebody doesn't know (20:38) How did how does somebody actually figure out if it's a limiting belief or it's them just having really high self-awareness
Alan Lazaros
(20:45) Yeah, you look objectively at the evidence (20:49) But you don't have any evidence when you're just starting something no you do you do you look around (20:53) How do I know I'm not gonna be the strongest man on earth because I have eyes (21:00) Because yeah, I know someone who can (21:03) Right out of the first weight training session.
Kevin Palmieri
(21:05) They do they're already stronger than me but what if you Looked at them when you were 14 and they were the same size as you Then I wouldn't that then I would think I can be that strong. (21:18) Well, that's I'm saying so like how many people's There's there's nuance to you I'm telling you there's like you could see somebody that's been speaking for a long time and not realize that When they were 15, they weren't that good at speaking.
Alan Lazaros
(21:29) I would be willing to bet when they were 15. (21:32) They were probably decent You think Michael Phelps wasn't good at swimming right out of the gate I Bet was he better than everybody? (21:40) No, no, but he was better than if you took a hundred swimmers that are the first time in the pool I Guarantee you he was top 10% for sure.(21:49) I think that that's Very important Someone who's like I'm gonna be a model and it's like no you're not You hung out with more models than I did. (22:01) Okay. (22:02) I mean, this is your thing.(22:05) You think most people are delusional.
Kevin Palmieri
(22:07) I think most people are They get to a point where they convince themselves that something drastic is gonna happen Regardless of skill and just based on time that's like a big piece of one of my beliefs is a lot of people overestimate How much time can affect things if it's not their thing? (22:30) Yeah, I mean I got awesome that you've been working out for 15 years. (22:33) That's awesome but like if you that doesn't mean you're gonna be It does not necessarily mean at all.(22:39) You're gonna be noteworthy when it comes to fitness It just means you're gonna be 15 years better than you would have been if you didn't do it You think Arnold Schwarzenegger was a pipsqueak out of the gate?
Alan Lazaros
(22:46) He was No, he wasn't he was dude. (22:50) That dude has German genetics that are like up 12.
Kevin Palmieri
(22:52) You don't like a horse 12 year There's another guy. (22:55) I was watching for some reason. (22:56) I'm watching a lot of video videos on bodybuilding and when he was like 14 he could have been in a magazine like Jesus Yeah, I don't know I genuinely don't remember what young Arnold was but I'm sure he had a pretty young Arnold was Predisposition.
Alan Lazaros
(23:12) Yeah, of course. (23:13) I mean he was he's a big German horse. (23:16) I mean big guy Yeah, big guy again at the end of the day like it's the dog in the fight and it's the fight in the dog It's both, you know that quote.(23:23) It's like it's not the dog in the fight. (23:25) It's the fight in the dog.
Kevin Palmieri
(23:26) It's both It's both. (23:27) There's no no Chihuahua has ever beaten a pit bull I was gonna say ever you've never seen a Chihuahua as a guard dog for no No, hey, how dare you Bush took a wolf? (23:36) Look if I come in the house (23:38) And he's there it's like oh, there's gonna be an easy take I mean I can have whatever I want (23:43) He would warn me and I'd be I might see ready with the bat and I might just I might just take him (23:48) Yeah problem solved
Alan Lazaros
(23:51) No, but he I will share this and we'll get out of here (23:55) Chihuahuas have the one of the best noses and the best hearing (24:00) It's actually one of the reasons Emilia got Tucker is because he can hear everything and he's yippy (24:05) So he announces whenever there's and he does think he's hot shit (24:09) So, oh, we have a pit bull in our neighborhood and Tucker thinks he could take him for sure (24:13) And that is gonna be a bad day for Tucker if he ever actually thought that but dad won't let that happen
Kevin Palmieri
(24:19) that's a good example what he lacks in size and (24:23) Being intimidating he makes up for and sniff and ears. (24:27) Well, I think that all of us have strengths and weaknesses and Yeah, but we want our strengths to be like other people's strengths and we don't want to have any weaknesses like well I want to be able to sing like Taylor Swift.(24:39) That'd be pretty fucking cool. (24:40) Awesome.
Alan Lazaros
(24:40) Cool like deep I would because you want it you think you should get it. (24:44) I think that that's that again. (24:45) That's just very childish That's very I don't I don't when when should someone graduate from that right?(24:50) It's like You realize how much how detrimental it is to your future Yeah I know some people who who probably could sing like Taylor Swift and and they are too afraid to shine like she has and so that's a different thing is like Trust me. (25:03) This doesn't always say this isn't always I'm not good-looking and wish I was better-looking Sometimes this is I'm too scared to be as good-looking as I am because it makes my life challenging in these weird ways Everyone acts differently around me or whatever or everyone has ulterior motives. (25:19) I have clients that have that it's like There's pros and cons to everything and I do think maturity is just like owning it I'm trying to own it too.(25:28) Like imagine if I walked around and I was like, you know, I just for me I feel like I just I don't know. (25:35) I'm just not intellectually sound enough. (25:37) I just don't feel like I'm focused.(25:39) You're just wrong That's not the issue. (25:41) That's not the issue Oh, maybe if I work harder and get smarter like that's not the problem Alan. (25:46) You're a coward.(25:47) You need to be more courageous That that's the actual problem. (25:51) So you can't you can't diagnose the root cause of an issue Inaccurately and then expect the medicine to cure the patient I Dig it.
Kevin Palmieri
