One in 3 people over the age of 65 suffer from hearing loss. After age 75 half of all people have trouble hearing. Hearing loss that goes untreated can get worse and can cause people to withdraw and become depressed. Hearing loss has been identified as a clear risk factor for dementia. Nevertheless, many people still resist going to an audiologist and wearing hearing aids.

In this interview with audiologist Dr. Monika Sharma, we focus on the hearing loss. We discuss why hearing loss happens, different types of hearing loss and how untreated hearing loss can diminish quality of life and even lead to dementia. Dr. Sharma is licensed audiologist and a licensed hearing instrument dispenser in the State of California, and she is a member of the American Academy of Audiology and the California Academy of Audiology.

Dr. Sharma is my audiologist.
