Speaker 2Welcome
Speaker 3To the business and Pleasure of Flowers. We're your hosts Fonda of Fever
Speaker 1And Lori Wilson . And we believe that business and fun are a perfect combination, kind of like us. Vonda <laugh>. Hello, vda La Fever .
Speaker 3Hello, Lori Wilson . What's happening today?
Speaker 1Oh , not much. Just , uh, been doing emails all morning. Um, and it got me thinking that we have a big holiday coming up and then summer, and it feels like summer is when all of the educational convention type things are happening. And I'm excited.
Speaker 3Yeah, there's a lot going on. I mean, starting on Wednesday, I have a virtual program with John Hossack , who is mm-hmm . <affirmative> . We're both on the , uh, tele education team. Yeah . And so we are doing something to prepare people for Mother's Day. So that's virtual. I know there's also other programs going on. I'm not sure where, but I know since we've opened up, there's a lot of wholesale houses that are like, oh , let's have some people in, you know, and educate . Yeah .
Speaker 1I thought when you, when you said you were doing this little summit thing, in my mind, I just assumed it was gonna be face-to-face, but peop companies are still doing virtual, right? They
Speaker 3Are. Yeah. They , they find it more well attend . I mean, I think that's what Laura found is that, you know, when you have a virtual one, people can come from all over, not just United States, but all over the world. Right . We were having , uh, higher attendance . So it's meeting that market, but again, you know, you and I, it's the face-to-face.
Speaker 1Yeah. We like that face-to-face, the connection part, but I mean, I get it. I think it , the key is to have a balance. I mean, I think we all got burned out on Zoom meetings, we know , or , or conventions or whatever you wanna call it. So trying to get kind of walk that line of balancing, let's do some face-to-face and some , well, and a lot of shop owners, they could actually afford coming if it was , uh, zoom, you know, or whatever. Mm-hmm.
Speaker 3<affirmative>
Speaker 1Inside the computer. Mm-hmm.
Speaker 3<affirmative>. Well, and so then let's talk about some face-to-face ones that we do have coming up. Yeah. So the first one that is on my radar is Society of American Florist , NextGen , which is in Miami. Yes .
Speaker 1Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Yes. It's earlier this year. It is last year. It was late July, like that last of July, 1st of August. And this year is like June 11th through 13th.
Speaker 3Yeah. Great . Um ,
Speaker 1Mm-hmm. <affirmative> . But I'm excited. I'm excited. I know Ellie's going. She wants me to go. If it all works out, you know, it'll be, it's always fun. Um, what I do l one of the things I loved about it last year was so many shop owners who were not next gen age. Mm-hmm.
Speaker 3<affirmative> sent their
Speaker 1Employees mm-hmm. <affirmative> , and it was really fun. And I think most of those employees felt really special. Oh, for sure . You know, their, their boss wanted them to come and learn and then come back to the shop and teach what they learned, share
Speaker 3What they learned. Yeah. I know. I'm very curious because you and Ellie came back last year. You were so excited. It was just such a great thing. And, you know, I'm just like, oh , I'm, I'm so happy that the two of you can go and really enjoy that.
Speaker 1It's great. It really , yeah . We learned a lot. I mean , we went last, you know, last year was the beginning, the first one they ever had. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> again . It was actually very well attended. Um , it's such a different vibe than s a f convention that they typically have in September. Both are good. Both are great. Mm-hmm . <affirmative> actually. Mm-hmm . <affirmative> . It's just a different feel. Um, so yeah. I'm
Speaker 3Excited. Well be honest. It's a different group of people. Right. It's ,
Speaker 1It's a whole different generation,
Speaker 3Which is that's what we want. We want the excitement Yes . As talking as the older generation. Right? Yes. It's a we want that,
Speaker 1We want that .
Speaker 3The excitement. Right.
Speaker 1And I'm definitely, there was a few points when the late nights were happening and I, I really felt my age <laugh> and was like, Ellie , you staying have fun. I'm gonna call an Uber. I'm done.
Speaker 3<laugh> ,
Speaker 1I gotta get to bed. <laugh> . Mm-hmm .
Speaker 3<affirmative> . Yeah. That's right. Anyway ,
Speaker 1And then the next one, so that is June, and then July is a I F D . Yes . Where is A I F D this year?
Speaker 3It's in Chicago. So it's in Chicago , um, at the Hilton and July 1st through the sixth. So that'll be fun. That'll be,
Speaker 1Yeah . Yeah . Are you going?
Speaker 3Yes, I am going good . Mm-hmm . <affirmative> , is
Speaker 1Julie going?
Speaker 3She is doing Fulter . Julie's doing , um, her and Cindy Toll are like doing some function at the beginning. So like a workroom cook
Speaker 1Or something. That's fun. Yeah. You know, I love seeing you and Julie watching you guys when you're at A I F D, because that's your place. Those are your people. Like, that is where you get re-energized mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Whereas like Ellie and I, that's how we felt about NextGen . Right?
Speaker 3Yeah. Right. Well, because those are like our flower family, you know? Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, it's like every year we get together, we get to see these people that we haven't seen for a long time and get energized by the design techniques that are happening and the beauty that we're seeing. And yeah. It's, it's a , it's a great place. All the good stuff .
Speaker 1One thing I wanna bring up, so last year when Ellie and I were in the, like atrium area interviewing people mm-hmm. <affirmative> for the podcast, and we talked to Marissa from Debbie's bloomers mm-hmm. <affirmative>, she was pointing out the fact that there are scholarships available.
Speaker 3So Absolutely .
Speaker 1If anyone is listening and think , oh, I'd love to do that. There's no way I can afford it, it's worth reaching out to A I F D . They have scholarship money. They would love to give somebody that wants to come. So don't let money be the factor that why you don't come. Right, right.
Speaker 3Yeah . I would suggest you go online to aif d.org and take a look at , um, the place that you could apply for a scholarship. It is really inspirational. And your first one you'll never forget. I still remember my , my very first symposium. Interesting.
Speaker 1Do you mm-hmm.
Speaker 3<affirmative>. And that was a long time ago. You maybe weren't born. It was 1979 <laugh> .
Speaker 1I was born. I just didn't know anything about flowers.
Speaker 3<laugh> . That's fine . Okay . So then a i d and then the other big one , uh, obviously would be Society of American Forests Convention in Phoenix, September 6th through the ninth.
Speaker 1Okay. All right . And Phoenix. I've never been to one in Phoenix.
Speaker 3You get to go this year? Phoenix
Speaker 1Girl. I'm excited. I'm excited. I don't know , since it is farther away, I don't know that there's like a lineup of presenters or what content, but honestly it's always good. I mean, there's al always something for someone. And last year was the first year that Camie got to come. Right . Camie Martin. It's,
Speaker 3It's, there's something for everyone. So as you mentioned, you know, pick out a really important , uh, educational opportunity for you or for your staff, or for both, and just save money, save the time. Especially the one, like in September, maybe you block out and you don't do weddings that weekend. So it gives you the opportunity to learn and grow and be enthused and get excited to go into the next busy season, which will be fall.
Speaker 1Oh my God . I feel like the world is spinning three times as fast as it should be. <laugh>. I just don't, you feel like time is going by really
Speaker 3Fast. Don't you remember as a little girl, your grandmother would say, oh, I wish time would slow down. Oh yes . The older you get, the faster it goes. And I'm like, yes . Oh my gosh, I'm there. <laugh>.
Speaker 1I am there too. I, I can remember talking on the phone with my mom. My husband was always outta town for business. He traveled 50% of the time. I had two little ones, a three-year-old and a two-year-old, and she kept saying, enjoy this moment. And I was like, no, I'm so stressed out. You know, the whole thing. And now it's like, oh , that was, were the good old days. <laugh> .
Speaker 3Yeah. Yeah. Isn't that the truth? Yeah . Wow . Time was slower, but time
Speaker 1We didn't, was slower. We
Speaker 3Didn't , would not value it as much as we do now mm-hmm.
Speaker 1<affirmative>. Right.
Speaker 3So we know what's going on Industrywide as far as opportunities out there in the future, but we have a lot right before us. Laurie , as far as the flower shops, I mean, we just got through Easter, which was just a little bump.
Speaker 1Yeah. Yeah. And I feel like Easter , um, I got, there's kind of a 50 50 according to our Flower Click members page, which, you know, that's my always my point of reference mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Um, some people had a busy, busy one . They were actually surprised, but a lot of people were like, we didn't even sell one plant. Mm-hmm.
Speaker 3<affirmative>.
Speaker 1So I don't ,
Speaker 3Yeah. It's just, it's kind of all over the place. And I think it depends on if you have big box stores close by, you know , if you've done some advertising, I mean, were you active on social media? I mean, there's so many variables in there for sure.
Speaker 1Yeah. Yeah. True. The other thing that , uh, I had kind of forgot about is a lot of, depending on what state you live in , um, where when I lived in Ohio, our spring break always backed up to Easter. Mm . Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. So we were always on vacation, you know? True . And so, a lot of people that when that happens, I , you don't really think about buying flowers.
Speaker 3No. Because you're out of town. You're, you're , you were always at some beach somewhere. If I'm ,
Speaker 1I was always in Florida, the beach getting out of the snowstorms. Yes.
Speaker 3Yeah. For sure. So next up we have some proms, right?
Speaker 1Yes. Prom is , yeah . Prom season. It , some places it's started, I can't remember who I was talking to last week, but they've already had their prom mm-hmm . <affirmative> , which is crazy to me . Mm-hmm . <affirmative> . It is , um, graduations.
Speaker 3Yeah. Admin professionals. So it's kinda like prom admin, professionals week, mother's Day. Then again, more proms, because sometimes people have, unfortunately prom on Mother's Day.
Speaker 1Yes, yes.
Speaker 3And like you just mentioned, dance, recitals, graduations, Memorial Day. Yeah . So it's all of that. Just like next six weeks, there's a lot on the plate of our, our shops because they're planning then for Mother's Day as well. So it's a lot just like tea . Take a deep breath and uh, just be ready. Right. Be
Speaker 1Ready. Be ready. And, and not only you make sure your staff is prepared.
Speaker 3Right,
Speaker 1Right. You know, for what's, what's coming. And
Speaker 3We always talk about that, setting them up for success. It's like, you know, we've got these holidays coming up and prepare them, you know, we're gonna need you this weekend. I'm gonna need you this Friday and Saturday. I'm gonna need to have you maybe take a Wednesday off instead, adjust hours so that you make sure that you have the staff taken care of themselves, personal time, but also that your shop is covered for the necessary times that you need that designer or your salesperson in the shop.
Speaker 1That's a really good idea. It reminded me of something Annie from , um, Leona Sues said in one of the shop talks, she said, especially during the summer Right . They have a meeting and they have the calendar up mm-hmm. <affirmative> who, who already has vacation plan , like get it all on the calendar now. Right. Um, and everyone knows they're required to work like one Saturday a month. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. And she said, as long as I do that ahead of time, we don't have an issue. Plus they're so grateful that I'm like, let's get this planned so there's no last minute , you know, thing.
Speaker 3That's a great idea. That is really, and, and then they know if that Saturday that they've already signed up to work and they can't, they're gonna have to find somebody to replace them, not them, because they already committed to that Saturn . Right. Yeah . Right. No, I think that's great. I think that's great information. And the other thing is prepping for the holidays, get 'em through your sales training. I mean, you've had a lot of people I've seen come through that are changing employees and so they're getting new , uh, staff registered into the sales prep school or flower prep school so they can prep the flowers. You know, just all of those things. Just get ready.
Speaker 1Yeah. No, get Well, and what's interesting is yes, get ready by making sure they're trained, but make sure mentally everyone is trained too. Right. Right. Which is something we kind of wanted to talk about today as far as attitude. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> , um, I know you talk to as many flower click members as I do, and it's interesting when we , they're talking about their employees and their frustrations with their employees. A lot of times it's the owner's attitude that is driving the attitude of the employees. Right. I mean, you're setting the tone mm-hmm. <affirmative> just like you. If you are negative and stressed out constantly and you're , every meeting we get on as a team, you're that way that's gonna rub others the wrong way. Yeah. Right.
Speaker 3It's like it starts with you. I mean, without a doubt, it it
Speaker 1Does. It does. It's that what is the Taylor Swift song? Hey, me , I'm the problem. It's me . So we found some quick, little, simple ways to help improve the attitude of your employees and yourself. But again, like Rhonda said, it starts with you. So you start modeling these things. Hopefully they will, they will follow.
Speaker 3Yeah. And so that's why number one is be self-aware. Be aware of your attitude, cuz it's starting at the top. Don't little little things happen that are gonna like, put you in a tailspin. You know, make sure that your attitude's in check, because you are being watched, you know, all eyes are upon you as the owner.
Speaker 1A lot of people are not naturally self-aware. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, they just don't, they don't realize they are. Right. They don't know what they don't know. Um, there are a , like that book, emotional iq, we all read it a long time ago. There's quizzes in there that if you will take the time to take, take the quiz, it will help show you where you lie in the self-awareness. Um, and it would be interesting for you to have your staff do that too .
Speaker 3Mm-hmm. <affirmative>.
Speaker 1Yeah. Because nothing is more, I don't even know the word. It's not frustrating, but it's, it's a feeling when you're an employee and your boss comes in or a staff meeting or for whatever. I'm just trying to think in like bosses that I've had, and I'm not talking about you vda , so you can ,
Speaker 3Okay . I'm listening very carefully. So they ,
Speaker 1I'm talking about like , um, you know, the principal when we'd have teachers meetings and if they're rushing in because they've had a hectic day, and they are starting that meeting with the feeling of urgency and panic and frustration. Man, that just filters through every single one of us in on the team going, oh God. And, and you leave the meeting not happy. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> and I, I think that happens a lot. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> when people are not self-aware with the feeling they're giving off Yeah.
Speaker 3That vibe they're giving off, which is Yeah . It's just not that positive attitude vibe, is it?
Speaker 1Right. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> . Right . Um, the other one that hit me is be aware of the things that tend to trigger a disruptive attitude in you. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> . So anticipate and plan ahead. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. So I have started trying to recognize my triggers. Like, what is it? Instead of let's, let's say my husband says something and I just attack, which he just walked by and giggled. I heard it . He
Speaker 3Just <laugh> .
Speaker 1But it's true, it's true. To take a step back and go, wow. Why did, how come that triggered me? What, how come that brought up the defensive side of me? Mm-hmm. <affirmative>.
Speaker 3Um ,
Speaker 1Because if you really think through it, you can usually pinpoint what it was in your past <laugh> that causes that. And once you recognize it, you can acknowledge this doesn't need to be a trigger anymore. I'm over that. And
Speaker 3One that, that could be for a business owner or within a shop, it might even be other employees, right . Is when there's one person who continually comes in late and then that is the trigger for obviously the person in charge, but then even the coworkers, it's like Uhhuh , <affirmative> . Oh , why do they always get to come in late and they never get sick. Yes . Yes . So you have to fix the problem. Right. But also don't let that influence your attitude. Right.
Speaker 1That goes back to, we've talked about the com comparing yourself to others. Right. That is a part of it. If, if someone comes in late all the time and every time it brings up a negative emotion in me and makes me frustrated, that just makes me worse.
Speaker 3Right.
Speaker 1It truly does. Right.
Speaker 3You
Speaker 1Know, you gotta release all that go. Well eventually he or she will figure it out, but I don't know mm-hmm. <affirmative>, what other ones did you
Speaker 3Well that kind of goes into there . If there's a problem, acknowledge it, then immediately focus on finding a solution or opportunities for that action. So immediately, right. If it continues to go on, then you're like, right. You gotta kind of let it go. But it's really, and that helps everyone's attitude. So I think that's the thing. You're being self-aware, you're looking around , is there something that's a trigger that's causing attitudes in everyone? Is there a common thread in that bad attitude and Yeah . That's what needs to be corrected. And as s a p , especially when you're going into six weeks of continual busyness Yeah . Or time where that culture in the shop needs to be so good. Yeah . And to get things accomplished.
Speaker 1And that's hard Sometimes it's really hard, especially if you are not , um, if you hate conflict mm-hmm . <affirmative> , right ? Well, we all hate conflict. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, but part of acknowledging that and being truthful right there, Hey, we can't have you being laid anymore and here's what you know, you gotta have to have those conversations. Right.
Speaker 3Have to, you know ,
Speaker 1One of the ones I liked , uh, or that triggered me <laugh> , Um, manage your internal stories and scripts. Master the art of productive self-talk is the language you are telling yourself. Is it helping or hurting you? Um, and I liked this line, she , you talked to yourself more than any other person in your life, so get good at it. Yeah . And I have friends in my life that I've been noticing this. I'm like, wow, why do you beat yourself up so much? You know, I think it's important that anytime we have a thought of negativity about ourselves, acknowledge it and then figure out how you can rephrase it.
Speaker 3Well, that's kind of goes back to what we were talking about just a couple weeks ago, the affirmation, affirm yourself, don't beat yourself. You know , it's hundred percent . It's just go back two episodes. I think it was two or three episodes. Yeah . And it's all about, you know, affirming yourselves in one another and Yeah . That's makes a huge difference in your attitude. Right,
Speaker 1Right. I like the other one. Ruthlessly, <laugh> eliminate B , c , D from your life. Now, I have to be honest, when I first read it, I thought it said bd like, bill do company, <laugh> . And I was like , what that the hell do they know that they're in my life ? <laugh> ? And I was like , oh , wait , so blaming , complaining and defensiveness, B , c, d ruthlessly eliminate it . I
Speaker 3Think you could post that.
Speaker 1Yeah. No , that
Speaker 3Would be bd . B c D allowed blaming, complaining, defensiveness.
Speaker 1One great idea. That could be an affirmation for the week. Yeah . You know, put it up in your store.
Speaker 3Love it.
Speaker 1Um, that each of us are responsible for eliminating this. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, stop blaming. Blaming, man, it's so damaging. It is . It truly is. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>
Speaker 3No throwing anybody under the bus.
Speaker 1No throwing under the bus. No. But there are people in this world, and I know some of them, and I know you do too . It is so important that every, for every problem, instead of going to solve it. Right. They're like, whose fault is it?
Speaker 3And it's never their fault.
Speaker 1No, no, no, no, no. That's why it's so important that they immediately know who they can blame. Right. And I'm like, you know what, let's solve the problem first. Right. Then if we need to track down the culprit <laugh> mm-hmm. <affirmative> , that's a whole nother story, but mm-hmm. <affirmative> blaming does not, it does nothing for your teen culture.
Speaker 3It doesn't do anything for you either. No,
Speaker 1No , you're
Speaker 3Right . Geez .
Speaker 1It makes people hate you. But besides that true,
Speaker 3I really like this one, and I think both of you and I work on this is start every day with time of reflection and preparation. You know, it's just be 10 intentional, the way you start your day. Yep . I love that. Put yourself
Speaker 1In the discipline driven frame of mind. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. That's the toughest, that is the toughest thing. Starting that discipline of getting up in the morning, not jumping on your phone for the first 30 minutes. You know, just even if you don't wanna do a devotion or don't just, just being thoughtful, quiet and thoughtful
Speaker 3And think of three things you're grateful for because gratitude changes your attitude. It
Speaker 1Ab absolutely does. Yep . Um, let me see. What were some of the other ones? Oh, I like , um, be patient beta , that goes with the timer. It takes time to create a habit, right? Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, that's a bunch of podcasts too. And a couple webinars. Exactly. So be patient with yourself, don't beat yourself up. Um, you know, I've talked , I think I talked about it last week, but Camie and Audrey and I are doing, you know, working on a healthier nutrition plan and we're holding each other accountable. And it's interesting because Easter weekend, like we all struggled, you know, I , I was traveling and there that's
Speaker 3Not , and there's Easter candy all over the
Speaker 1Place . It's Easter Candy. The Easter Bunny brought me chocolate. So what am I , anyway, the , the thing is we don't have to beat ourselves up. We're gonna , we all decided, hey, we're gonna reset mm-hmm. <affirmative>, that's okay . Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, that's okay . And, and keep going instead of just completely giving up because we had a weekend of Easter egg candy .
Speaker 3Nope. That's the way. And it says be patient, be patient with yourself, but be tough because you're gonna reset. You're right. Right . You're not gonna give up. Right. And then it just takes that, that to build that winning attitude or the can-do attitude.
Speaker 1Exactly.
Speaker 3And of course the last one, just never lose sight of the big picture. The big picture is you want a positive attitude. You want that culture in your shop that's positive, that people are wanna come in and they wanna be a part of your shop. They wanna do business with you. They love when they come in because they love what they feel they see. Or when somebody calls on the phone, you're so happy and helpful that they wanna call you all the time and they know that's the right place to be. So yeah , I think it all just comes back to the customer.
Speaker 1When we were out of town last week in Oklahoma , uh, one of the things that we do almost every evening is go to Brahms Ice cream. Mm . Um , we both grew up going there all the time. We love it. We don't have it here. Um, and you know, it's, it's, they , it's fast food plus ice cream. All of the stuff we went to , we go to a different one every time because they're all over the place. And one particular one we went into , we got there and then a whole busload of church kids came in behind us, you know? And I was like, oh, that's fun. And then Mark's like, oh, I'm glad we got here, <laugh> . But my point is, I was watching the people working mm-hmm. <affirmative> , and they were young. All of them young. They never lost their cool, they were making jokes with the pe um , nice. You know, they were thoughtful. They were kind, so much so that before I, we left, I went over to one of the guys. I was like, this, you're , you guys are, how come you're so nice? <laugh> ? Like, I'm amazed. I in today's world, where you don't find, except that Chick-fil-A Right. That's who they were. And he said, you know, we just, we just try to be nice. We just try to be patient and we don't lose our head. That is what our manager tells us. Don't lose your head.
Speaker 3Wow . Like , that's admirable, isn't it? This
Speaker 1Is, I , I feel like I need to write a Google review mm-hmm. <affirmative>, but I can't remember their address, so I gotta make sure it's the right problems . But it really, it really made a difference because I felt their positive attitude,
Speaker 3Which, you know, those kids who came in off the bus felt the same.
Speaker 1Exactly .
Speaker 3Somebody noticed somebody ,
Speaker 1Yes , somebody noticed. But all of those kids were changing their mind about every
Speaker 3Single
Speaker 1Order. But the girl, the two people working behind the counter were like , uh, no . Not too late to change. I haven't got your credit card yet. We can like, I don't know, get really like everybody in there. There was, there was this, oh , cloud of Joy <laugh> hanging, hanging over this door .
Speaker 3And so if you remembered that location, you would travel to that location to do business rather than one that was
Speaker 1Hundred percent . Yeah , a hundred percent . Just because of the attitude and energy of the staff that was there. So I was, I was very impressed. Way to go Brams, Tulsa, Brams.
Speaker 3And that's how we all should be when we're running our own business too. That's what we want. We want people to go, wow, that was, I wanna write a positive Google review .
Speaker 1Right. Don't lose your head on Valentine's Week or Mother's Day week. Don't lose your head. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> , keep the energy high and attitudes happy.
