You need somebody with that energy that's gonna drive everybody.
SPEAKER_02Because the other thing a warrior does, it makes everybody else feel safe. Like, oh, she's got it.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the business and pleasure of flowers. We're your hosts, Vonda LaFever and Lori Wilson.
SPEAKER_02And we believe the business and fun are a perfect combination. Kind of like us, Vonda.
SPEAKER_00Hello, Ellie. Longtime no C. Hey, Miss Lori, longtime no see. I'm going through withdrawals without you. How did a weekend a while? Weekend without you. Did you get rested? I told you this morning, I think I slept this weekend more than I was wishing. So yes, it was glorious.
SPEAKER_02It was, and you know what's funny for those of you that are not Flower Click members and did not receive our away from the office message. It was our first staff retreat, face-to-face, all staff retreat. And in real life. And it was pretty amazing because it's kind of crazy. Two of our staff members I've never met face-to-face. Yeah. And how many have you not met face to face? I think just one. Yeah. And the other one you met for like 15 minutes for a hot minute.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly. So not really.
SPEAKER_02So it was amazing.
SPEAKER_00It was. I do have to mention our hearts go out to everybody who's affected by a hurricane. And we had one of our team members, sweet Donna, who was, you know, in the midst of that and made the decision to save the family, which we're very happy. But obviously we did miss her, so just wanted to do a shout out to her. I love Donna.
SPEAKER_02She'll be there. And you and I are lucky because we got to meet, we've got to meet Donna. She got to go to AIFD, and so we got to spend time with her, but unfortunately she didn't get to meet the others. And Donna is safe. Her house is safe, but she did lose power. But anyway, the retreat was amazing. You and I got there a couple days early, you and Fonda and I to kind of get planning and do all the grocery shopping and got everything set up.
SPEAKER_00It was called Camp Click. And so, you know, we had our little summer series all summer with Camp Click, but this actually felt like summer camp. All of us, most of us staying together and just kind of having that face-to-face, wake up in the morning, have coffee all the way till bedtime. So it was definitely a camp vibe.
SPEAKER_02And and it did, you know, we joke about how we're an all-women team, and we really don't mean to be, but it really did come in handy that we were that we were all women, you know, because we just layer down in shorts and t-shirts and swimsuits and you know, hung out by the pool and did our own thing. But I have to say, at the end, just every single person was like, first of all, I wish, you know, why didn't we do this sooner? And second of all, when are we gonna do it again?
SPEAKER_00And that's like the best response to get from this, right? I think we were not cautious, but like, oh my gosh, we're finally all getting together. How's this gonna go? Like, we all work so well together, we're remote. But to translate that to real life and you know, so many different personalities. Yeah, different personalities, but really we're all more similar than I think right thought. And it was it was just great all around my time.
SPEAKER_02I do too.
SPEAKER_00And I loved that we all got to be together.
SPEAKER_02Speaking of personalities, the one morning where we kind of did team building stuff. We, you and I, uh prior to the meeting, we sent out a quiz because we love our personality quizzes.
SPEAKER_00We just I'm sure that I think we should title this episode like Ellie and Lori take another one.
SPEAKER_02Another part 80, part 83, personality quiz, part 87. But we sent this one out, and this one we wanted it to be lighter, we didn't want it to be super heavy where you're analyzing everything, and it literally took less than 10 minutes for each person, and it was free. We love a free quiz, and so we had him fill it out and send it back to us, and then we kind of compiled it all together, and it's called Spark Type, S-P-A-R-K-E-T-Y-P-E. And what I loved about it, besides the fact that it is short, it is basically based on three things: your spark type, and then your middle, what what enhances your spark type, and then your anti-spark type. Like what is it? Your anti-spark. And so I a long time ago, I I did the Myers Briggs, which is super in-depth, and most people know about that one. And I found that this aligns really well with my Myers Briggs. So if you have done that one, you will you will see some familiarities. And so you can do this as teams, as you know, a corporate team, as a small business, or you can do it as an individual. They say a lot of people that are young, floundering, trying to figure out what they want to do in this life, this is a great starting point to figure out, you know, where do you where do your passions lie and where do your things that you hate? Where, you know, being able to cross those off your list. After you take this, it helps you be better equipped to find a job or to figure out what projects you like to work on. So that's kind of why we did it. And the one thing that I loved is when we got everybody's quiz back and we kind of put it all on one big spreadsheet. Again, it's this big, beautiful bouquet, if you will, of all of these, yeah, all of the different personalities and passions that make up one big company. And we had just a little bit of everything.
SPEAKER_00A lot of things that complemented each other. Exactly. You know, especially the anti spark, I think were good to see to make sure that those people weren't in roles that aligned with the anti. Exactly. That to ensure satisfaction in their job and just overall what would we do. Well, draining, being burnout, yeah, actually.
SPEAKER_02Burnout, self-fulfillment, right? And the one thing about the anti that we talked about, it's not that you can't physically and mentally do that because you probably can't. Your anti-spark is what literally drains you the quickest. We talked about that a lot. And so, you know, I found it so interesting in some of the more analytical people on our team that their anti is what you and I love, you know, and then my anti is what their what they love. And so I was like, wow, thank God. You know, that we have each other's backs that way. So anyway, so here are the spark types, just real quick. There are 10. They're scientists, warrior, nurturer, performer, sage, essentialist, maker, maven, advocate, and advisor.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so quickly, if you guys want to kind of relate more to what we're saying when we're going through each type, why don't you pause this episode and go? We're gonna link the quiz here in the show notes. It's sparktype.com, s-a r k e t y p e dot com. Take the quiz quick and then come back here and you'll know and understand more about what Lori and I are talking about. It might be fun for us to kind of break it down for you based on what you are.
SPEAKER_02So I'll start with the first one and then you go to the second one. Um, the first one that we talked about was the Maven. The Maven is all about the process of learning. Like they love to learn new stuff, they love to acquire knowledge, they are driven by the pursuit of new ideas and new information. For Mavens, it's the journey of learning is more important than any particular outcome. And they just like the whole process of learning. Now, here's where they can get stifled. They are stifled by shallow and superficial information, they're gonna become real disinterested if they feel that they're not learning anything new. These are the people that are gonna flush out the Google articles real quick. You know, like some of us are like, oh, I read it on Google. I read it on Google. Mavens don't just read on Google. Does that make sense? The Maven, we had Leslie, who was no surprise, Leslie, who is on our team. That was her shadow, which is that middle spark type that enhances your primary. She's a Maven, and that didn't surprise us at all because we give her lots of things to research or to learn, right? Because she loves she loves that.
SPEAKER_00Even in her personal life, she's an avid reader. Yes. So that that would be avid reader and learner. Right. Okay, the next one is the maker. Their quote is, I make ideas manifest. So obviously, this is all about creativity, innovation, and bringing ideas to life. They get energized by the process of making and creating from concept to finished product. They thrive in environments that allow them to tinker, experiment, and play. That's you. That's you. That's you. Yes, that's you. That was my primary. They are stifled by a lack of resources or materials, rigid rules or procedures, and situations where they cannot experiment or improvise.
SPEAKER_02I would think a lot of designers could be like that, might be this way. Yeah. I for sure a lot, you know. You know my love of TikTok. When I'm scrolling and I watch a lot of florists on there that are creating beautiful flowers or beautiful content, I'm this is them. You know, they might start doing something and they have no idea how it's going to end. But they love the process. They love making. I think of Jenny Thomason. She is a maker of all makers. Like it is you talk about creativity and innovation. The next one is the scientist. This Fark type is all about the pursuit of burning questions, wicked problems, puzzles, quandaries. They feel excitement, purpose, energy by searching for an answer and arriving at it. They're fueled by time and space to experiment and problems to be solved. When I was reading this, you know who I was picturing in my mind were was that panel at Next Gen of all of the growers that were up there, and they were talking about how they do the hybrid seeds and how they come up with, and they were so passionate and excited about it. And I'm like, what couldn't be fun? Exactly. It was, I had I could I could not understand what they were talking about, but I could appreciate the intelligence. They were so incredibly smart, and they were just talking about all of the science behind the flowers, and this is what excited them.
SPEAKER_00Right. Yeah. So they see problems not as like a brick wall in front of them, but a challenge, an excitement to be solved. Exactly. Okay, the essentialist, this person creates order from chaos. It's all about order, distillation, simplification, and clarity. They think in systems and processes and are fueled by creating efficient and effective solutions. They thrive in environments that require them to create order out of chaos, but they're stifled by avoidance or defiance of systems and sustained inefficiency. So luckily, we had a lot of essentialists on our team. Whether it was primary or the shadow spec type, we've got a lot of essentialists.
SPEAKER_02They keep all of our things organized. People really keep the wheels on. And I think a lot of flower shops need this in a manager for sure. You know, that's something when you are looking for a good manager. You might want to screenshot what an essentialist does and come up with some questions to ask when you're interviewing to make sure they can do this because they need to be able to think in some sort of systems and processes to create effective solutions. I think a Cami and her whole team, the majority of them have some form of essentialistic thinking in on the web team. And that's that's because they live in the land of spreadsheets, right? Absolutely. Yeah, everything has to be orderly. And I think a well-run flower shop has to be run by an essentialist. The next one, the performer, I turned moments into magic. I didn't know whether to be flattered or appalled that every single person there thought this was my spark type. But just so you know, it wasn't. It wasn't even on there at any of mine. But this spark type comes alive when animating, enlivening, and energizing an experience, interaction or engagement moment or role or pursuit in a way that makes it come alive with energy, emotion, understanding. They turn moments into magic. They're fueled by an engaged audience. They are stifled by a disengaged audience. Now, I 100% agree with all of those things, and I love all of those things, but it was not my main spark type.
SPEAKER_00Right. And I think when you go through the next one, we can kind of contrast the two because the difference, you're not saying look at me, you're saying look what I can teach you. Right. Or look within you, look what I can teach you to learn about yourself, kind of thing, rather than look at me. I'm such a great singer. I'm such a great dancer. Because I can do none, neither of those things.
SPEAKER_02Right. That's the difference. So go ahead to the next.
SPEAKER_00So the next one, which you are correct, this was your primary, is the sage. So the sage, their quote is, I awaken insights. This spark type's impulse is to teach, illuminate, and elevate. They live to share insights, ideas, knowledge, and experience with others in a way that leaves others in some way better, wiser, and more equipped to experience life differently. They're fueled by open minds and curiosity and are stifled by closed minds and disinterest. And this is absolutely due to a T. So and I think anybody who has heard you speak could say this. No, that's so if I combined the two, that would be the Yeah. Well, you have to have, I mean, in order for, you know, I've spoken as well, but like in order for you, like the way your secret sauce is that you kind of are a performer in the way that you're a storyteller. You keep everybody engaged, you keep them on their toes, you keep them entertained. You sometimes make typos in the slide deck just makes everybody laugh. Yeah. You know, and you brush it off like it was nothing and make a joke out of it. Like you have a tiny bit of a performer, but only to awaken the insights. Make the sage awaken the insights and make your sage type right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So that's interesting. It is well, and we've talked about it in our group just because you know, I don't believe for one second that the three that came up for each of us are the only three that we have to live in. Now I think probably depending on what we're doing at the time, we're gonna have three others that kind of flow in and out of our personality at the time. Because just like you said, you stand up and have to perform too. So you have to channel all of that, but it drains you quite more. Yeah, which was my anti. Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So perform was my anti.
SPEAKER_02But you can do it, it but it does drain you more than it does me.
SPEAKER_00Correct. But at least Sage wasn't my anti. No, no, no, no, no, because that is more of teaching, you can right. I feel like I'm doing more of that when I'm teaching a workshop or exactly, exactly.
SPEAKER_02But if you were to have to stand up there on stage all by yourself and completely just perform, you'd probably hate that. You would just be misreading right. Like when everybody asks, like, can we do karaoke at the next conference? You're like, that that would be a big no. You can paint me. And then all these people going, love it. Yes, yes, yes. And you can't win. That would be my nightmare. Yes. Uh the warrior, I gather and lead people. And this was no surprise that our leader, Vonda, this was her number one. She is the warrior of all warriors. You know what's funny? My youngest child, Reese, this was his number one. Yeah. Really? I was like, oh my gosh, you're Vonda.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's insightful.
SPEAKER_02I told him, I said, that is powerful, Reese, because he is such a quiet introspective. He needs to awaken the warriors. I know it. I know it. So this Spark type yearns to gather people, organize them, harness their collective energy, assume responsibility, make decisions, and lead them on some form, form of meaningful quest or mission. They lead teams forward toward desired outcomes, and they're fueled by a challenge and taking the lead. I think that is, I mean, wow, I want that. I really that's so powerful. They are stifled by passivity and avoidance and people that dig in their heels. And we've seen that in Vonda. She does not like people that sit back, no, no, not me. I'm scared. I don't want to do it. You know, I've I've seen her on sales calls with me when I'm on like the third conversation with somebody, and they just will not accept that they need to change. And she's like, Okay, good luck to you. I'm out. But it's true, you know, it's a warrior, but I think that's also another good type of characteristic you need on a team in a business.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. What would you say to say we have shop own owners on here that took the quiz and they wish that they're a warrior and they're not? What would you say?
SPEAKER_02I would say fine because you know, we can't be what we're not. One thing, if you are an open mindset, willing to learn skill and have the will, I absolutely think you can develop a warrior to a to some extent. But if you just don't have it in you, then you need to find a manager with that skill. Because I think you need a warrior on your staff in a leadership position for your team. You need somebody with that energy that's gonna drive everybody because the other thing a warrior does, it makes everybody else feel safe. Like, oh, she's got it. Vonda's gonna never lead us astray in those scary times.
SPEAKER_00Like, think about during she's always gonna make sure we're fed and safe, and not right. Right. Yeah, but I'm yeah, I'm thinking more primally, like yeah, you're thinking primal.
SPEAKER_02I was thinking COVID, you were thinking primal, whatever.
SPEAKER_00Thinking a tad in the middle of flower shops during COVID. Well, you know, same thing, same thing, same thing. She'd be a leader or should be a warrior on either side.
SPEAKER_02But no, that's it's really good. I think I think that is one of the ones, you know, you need an essentialist and you need a warrior. Those are two characteristics that you that you do need.
SPEAKER_00The next one is the advisor. I guide to grow. Was this founded second? No. Her second was stage.
SPEAKER_02This was mine.
SPEAKER_00Okay. So I was your second. Okay. This Spark type, the advisor, is all about coaching, mentoring, and advising. They're trusted guides and catalysts who accelerate outcomes and add value. They're fueled by time and space to learn about the goals of others and uncovering questions and are stifled by a lack of time to understand a person's needs and circumstances. Yeah. Or when their requested advice is not considered. So, yeah, I mean, this is what you do all day. This is what this is what I get to do. You have other things, but this is because I spend too much time doing it. You care about learning about the goals of others and asking the right questions to guide them and mentor them and advise them and help them. No, it is. It is a good one.
SPEAKER_02It's but it is the challenge with it, as anyone that has that is how to reel it in and know number one, when you are with somebody. And I don't want to say when someone's gonna take advantage of it, because I don't think anyone very rarely is someone intentional about that, that, but when you're like, But it just naturally happens. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00What I just read that I didn't realize before is stifled by a lack of time to understand personal needs. So it's like you, it's like you're stifled when you give yourself 30 minutes. Yeah. You know. It's rough. So that's kind of where that ties in.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And an advisor is an important one to have also when you are managing a flower shop. You got to have a little bit of that when you're having those one-on-ones with your employees.
SPEAKER_00Or when you're training a brand, yeah, when you're training a brand new person, you've got to have that patience.
SPEAKER_02How are you going to help them grow? The advocate, the advocate, I am your champion. These people are going to advocate for you left and right. They shine a light on what needs changing. They are fueled by a cause. They are committed to a group. They're going to rally behind you. They give a voice to the voiceless. That was my favorite sentence in this. Like we see this all over the world. You want an advocate. You want somebody that's going to fight for you. I want to say, looking, thinking about our retreat, looking around, sitting, just hanging out in the pool, listening to that laughter, having the chance to talk one-on-one, you know, all of us co-workers, getting to know one another. Man, I would advocate for every single one of them. Like, you know, like I would stand in that gap. I would fight for every single one of them. And what and I feel like they would for me too, right? Like what a powerful feeling. And that's what a team should feel like.
SPEAKER_00We all have each other's backs. We all understand where each other is coming from.
SPEAKER_02You don't have to believe the same stuff, but you can still advocate for one another because you know each other's heart.
SPEAKER_00You can put yourself in this. So let me ask you what the difference between the advocate, I'm your champion, advocating shining light, and the warrior. The warrior says, follow me, follow me to a better place.
SPEAKER_02We're gonna go in and we're gonna, I'm leading you. The advocate gives a voice to a voiceless person. More of a protector. You know, I I will I will rally behind this. You need help, I got you. You're down, I'm your girl. You are behind in you need to make eight casket sprays. I will stay here with you. We're gonna do this together. I'm advocating for you. You had a mean customer, and you're down, I got you. I'm taking the next three calls. You take a break for you. That's an advocate.
SPEAKER_00Got it. Last one is the nurturer. I've got you. We had We had a lot of nurturers. Almost like we have too many nurturers. No, it's not. It's a good thing. This spark type offers care and support, sees you, hears you, holds you. They're deeply empathetic, helps lift each other up, and their most valued offering is their presence. So as I read this, little a side note here. Stay with me. On Slack, we have something that we've implemented. I don't know if we've talked about it on the podcast or not before. The tacos. I don't know. Maybe. But we have this thing, we have this separate Slack channel for shout-outs. And anytime somebody puts a taco emoji and tags a post- Hold on, stop.
SPEAKER_02You know how dumb this sounds, right?
SPEAKER_00Like saying it out loud. Yeah, that's fine. Like, stay with me. So you basically what you do is you do a taco emoji and then tag a name, and then maybe you'll say like why you're giving them a shout out. Like at Lori, you're such a great storyteller. The customer service podcast was great. Or at Donna, maybe she gets she got two tacos yesterday for another sale that she made. And with these tacos, it's an actual like reward system where then our team can trade their tacos that they accumulate for real gifts, like Flower Click merch or Amazon gift card or Costco membership or whatever they want to save their points for. We've got a whole shop which I need to build out for you. I've got ideas for you. Perfect. Let's add that to our list. But with that, like as I see all the nurtures that we have on our team, and then with this taco channel with everybody lifting each other up, I can really see the correlation there.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Everybody is just so supportive of like calling out when everybody does something good and just the little things to kind of lift each other up and nurture us further every single day. So just wanted to kind of make that connection that I hadn't had before. Now that we know that we've got all these nurturers on it. You are so right.
SPEAKER_02And you know who is the worst at giving out tacos? Besides me and you and Vonda, and we do not have nurturer in our spark types.
SPEAKER_00I know. Maybe that's maybe that's not a coincidence.
SPEAKER_02I don't know it. I don't think it, I don't know. I don't think it has to do with that. We're not nurturing. I think it's that we're traveling all the time and we forget about dang, I didn't see them in tacos.
SPEAKER_00And that web team, they're so like in the giving them to each other.
SPEAKER_02I think they're in cahoots. Web team, are you in cahoots? If you're listening, I think you're in cahoots.
SPEAKER_00No, don't listen to her. Keep giving your tacos.
SPEAKER_02Just kidding. No, they are so yeah, I love our web team. They're good, but I found I'm I think it's funny because we do have so many nurturers. And that I also think it's because you know, most of them are moms, also, too. So part of that, you know, by law, you have to be.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, except that doesn't sound good because I'm a mom and I didn't get nurture. Well, your kids are all gone. Let's wrap up this spark type's synopsis.
SPEAKER_02The synopsis, what would you say? Well, if I owned a flower shop, if I was a flower click member or not, and I was listening to this, I what I love about this little quiz is it's easy, and I love to take quizzes where I'm gonna find out a little bit about myself and about all my coworkers. I think this is a really fun thing to take right before the busy season, and you're getting ready to have your fall or holiday staff meeting. If I was a manager, I would send this out in your group me or your group text or whatever you do and say, hey, take this, send me your answers before the next staff meeting, and I would make just a couple slides. Like for us, of course, I did too many slides, but all you'd really need is one, and you could put everybody's different because it was really powerful at the end of the slide deck when I put all of us up there with all of our primary and our shadow and our anti, and everybody could see what everybody else's was and how we all kind of intertwined because it makes you realize how important every single person's job is.
SPEAKER_00And I think you might be willing to share that. I would a hundred percent share it, and they can use it because it has each spark type and the little description, and then all you have to do is plug in everybody's right.
SPEAKER_02I would just leave the last slide blank and they could add whatever. I would be more than happy to share this lovely Canva slide deck that I made all by my all yourself. I would be happy to. You did. So I think, yeah, even though you're a little stressed. Well, you know, it isn't my best work, but it was fine. But I think it'd be a really fun one to do at a staff meeting. Totally. The more, yep, the more you get to know your staff members, the better, the better you become.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, let's. I just wanted to kind of go over the rest of our itinerary was quick click. So everybody came in on Wednesday afternoon, and we had a charcuterie board and some snacks after the post-travel for everybody, and then we did Fiesta night, and we made walking tacos. Delicious. If you don't know what a walking taco is, where have you been?
SPEAKER_02Have you been under one?
SPEAKER_00But Google it. They're delicious, highly recommend for a stop, even a stop lunch. We had an evening planned with DIY spa night and vision boards and all this. And we honestly just had we just were talking, we were catching up. We were so fun, just yapping around the table. So we did that. We played some games.
SPEAKER_02Oh, the games, the games were smoking.
SPEAKER_00Shout out to Chuck O'Neal.
SPEAKER_02Oh my gosh, Chuck O'Neal and Pit Sperg.
SPEAKER_00Lots of good inside jokes for the team. Oh my gosh, so funny. And then Thursday we did get down to business. We did a company update. We did kind of a strategy and support workshop. And then Lori facilitated the spark type discovery, which I think was awesome. And then we had lunch. I did company headshots for everybody. So everybody got a fresh headshot. And then we just had some pool time. Lori got extremely competitive in water volleyball. Like when I tell you, I've never actually seen her like this. She was scaring me a little bit. I'm telling you what, as somebody who is not a competitive person and has past trauma from seventh grade volleyball. Lori was scaring me a little. What you guys gotta know.
SPEAKER_02So she Cammy is behind Ellie. So can't Ellie can't see Cammy's face. Cammy is just as competitive, if not more, than me. Cammy is behind her making faces at me, like, do it, do it, do it, do it, slam it. Like she's making motions, spike it, spike it like, and then spike it in. Ellie turns around. Cammy's just smiling. Oh, I'm just keeping score. Everybody wins. Everybody like amidst all of that. You know who else was competitive? It's Denise. Denise was my teammate, man. She wanted to win. Go, Denise. I always want her on my team.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you guys made a great little team. And our team, we were oh my god. Oh, just like, okay, we don't have to get away.
SPEAKER_02Well, and then Ali, the our other web girl, goes, Okay, I'm playing. I played in high school. It's like, oh, come on, come on. Halfway through it, she's like so horrible. And I'm like, I thought you played. And she goes, Oh, I totally lied. I was, I thought you knew that. I'm like, no, I didn't. She was like, You actually did me. I've never played in my life. Anyway, it was so funny. It was, it was just so much fun. It could not have been more of a fun, relaxing time. And it went by so fast.
