The Texas Floral Expo this year is June the 27th through the 29th in Lake City, Texas. We have all sorts of hands-on boxes, business sessions, mainstage programming, mail functions, all the good stuff. You're familiar with.

SPEAKER_03

Welcome to the Business and Pleasure of Flowers. We're your hosts, Bonda LaFever and Lori Wilson.

SPEAKER_01

And we believe that business and fun are a perfect combination. Kind of like us, Vonda.

SPEAKER_03

So Lori, summer has officially begun.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, it has. My husband is very happy because the morning traffic has died down in his seven-minute commute. So he leaves the same time. Well, he tries to leave a little bit after, but the same time the high school starts. And so he is in a really good mood for two reasons. Number one, summer. So his traffic has lightened up. Number two, his company, Vonda. Here's a hint. Summer hours. He gets half day Fridays. Wow. Yeah. Wow. Which you and I both know we would not like because we would just sit on Zoom and talk anyway. But it's a little bit annoying for me because he comes home.

SPEAKER_03

You have to get everything you want to be on a Zoom, especially exactly mornings. Right. We're going to be in trouble this afternoon because we're on an afternoon appointment.

SPEAKER_01

Well, but this is where I encourage him to go golf. But in the summer in Texas, no, golfing in the afternoon is not an option. So but he did take his gym bag with him to go straight to the gym. Okay. Because I told him today. I said, I'm going to be recording a couple of podcasts. I've got a webinar, blah, blah, blah.

SPEAKER_03

And he's stay out of the house as long as you can. So golf is not a good idea in Texas in the summer. So the gym bag would be good. That'll be good for him to just try to be quiet.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, that was my that was my role. I said, if my door is closed, do not open it. He's like, oh, okay.

SPEAKER_03

Like, well, this has been a week that I've been getting pictures of the grandkids that, oh, the last day of school pictures. You know, you get oh yes. And then you get the last. So Natum and Farron first. They were like, this is the last day of school. And then Layton and Campbell, like, last day of school. I'm like, oh my God. Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So they're excited. The little ones are so excited for summer. The smaller ones are like just happy they don't have to go to school, right? It's like, what are we gonna do? What are we gonna do? Yeah. Then the older ones are like, one wants to make some money. So she's like, I'm gonna be up, I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna plus meet the friends at the pool. Yeah. And Layton, who just first year of high school is like looking forward to sleeping in in the morning.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, so everybody has little things, she has their thing. Don't you remember though, as a kid, like when you're young, last day of school, you thought summer lasted forever because you really don't have that concept of time.

SPEAKER_03

Right, right. And you know that maybe at night the friends all get together and we used to go play baseball in the field across the street from us. Yes. It's fun things that we like really looked forward to. Yeah, yeah. On the same schedule at that point.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I mean, I've told my kids those stories, and it really sounds like not real, but we literally did get kicked out of the house like in the morning, and you don't go in until evening. The whole neighborhood. Yeah. You know, that's how we were raised. And we did drink out of the hose, the hot hose. I just I remember it so vividly, like, ah, the guy, wait, it's gotta run a while, you know, and everybody was standing in lines, it's some some neighbors' hose until it ran a while. And then you come in after the mosquito truck drove by all the chemicals, and you're like, Oh, I guess it's time to go in. And you survived.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. And and now you look and you're like, gosh, we miss that now. I was just reading this article that a friend sent to me about how summer was so different and so cherished when we were young, which it really was. And now we're like, here it is, summer. Let's try to get as much in as we can. Like we have work projects we have to do. We want to try to get a vacation and oh, let's try to put something aside for education.

SPEAKER_01

Let's what is it that we need to get done in this little block of time? This short amount of time. And now, you know, like even my kids when they were growing up just sport throughout the whole summer. Whereas when I was a kid, they pretty much kind of ended when school ended. You're right. You know, and my dad was a principal, my mom was a teacher, and so when school was out, like we had a camper and a Volkswagen bus. They loaded us up and we got out of town. And I never really knew why until I was an adult. And then I realized they were done. They were like, get us out of here. And we just traveled, we would go west or east, wow, and just go camp and go see the United States. And I didn't realize until I was an adult how fortunate I was. Absolutely. You know, because not everyone's parents have two months off.

SPEAKER_03

We always would take two weeks. My dad had two weeks' vacation. It was always in the summer. We had a pop-up camper. Yeah. Same, same. And we would off somewhere. And you're right, you don't realize how blessed you were until you look back and you're like, What? You haven't been to right.

SPEAKER_01

You haven't been to all of these national parks and all of these KOAs and all of these, exactly. Yeah. And my adult kids, my husband doesn't camp. He's a hotel guy, he's an airplane guy. Like my kids are like, think they're so abused. They're like, we never got to go camping. You know, I'm so sorry that we took you to Cabo. I'm so sorry that we exactly. But anyway, that's neither here nor there. What I want to talk to you about today, speaking of summer, yes, are summer goals. And so I don't know. I've been reading these articles, you know me, reading. Reading, love it. And I well, because this kind of stemmed from our latest shop talk with our flower clickers. Speaking of this, it is totally off topic, but one of our members who I love, she got a new puppy. And so she was asking in our members' group, like, what should I name the puppy? And everybody's given flower names. And one of our members goes, Clicker. Oh my gosh, if you do, I will just love that dog forever. I'll love it anyway. But I was like, that would be hilarious. Well, that's hilarious. You made me clickers up anyway. Did you have when you and Bud owned the business and Ellie was out for the summer? And I know you weren't like, oh, I let's take three months off. But did you guys have like summer goals like separate of just your yearly goals? Or was that a thing?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, there were always things that you had on this list, almost like what we call now a back burner list. Yeah. Yes. In the summer that you don't have time to do. So, yes, there were goals. And some of them were making sure that the place was clean. I mean, which is hard because me as a profit person, I can't directly relate the staff hours to what I'm doing, right? So I usually go, okay. But those things need to be done. And if they're on salary and they're there anyway, what do you need to do in the shop to organize it? Go through all your prom items and say, okay, what do we need to get ready for prom for homecoming, which is first? Let's go through that. What do we need to get ready for homecoming? And then we looked at the Christmas items. That's what we really drug down all of the Christmas. We did prep time for Christmas. Then we also had employees that were new, right? So they'd never gone through a holiday or anything. So we needed to get them up to speed on their training them. I don't like to say that, but educating them on what were the correct ways to take care of customers. Watch Amy as she takes care of a customer, you know, because we had high school kids at the time who were planning on continuing through the school year. So it's usually when we would bring on a new employee and get them up to be during that time. Right. So mostly cleaning, organizing, making list of things that you need to buy or redo for the upcoming fourth quarter.

SPEAKER_01

So and another thing I would add that you probably didn't have to deal with because it was a while back was marketing. A lot of social media marketing thinks that I think summer is the perfect time to bank all of that information.

SPEAKER_03

You know, when you say that, when you say marketing, I guess we did market because we would go to all the community events and be present. So Bud was really involved in the Chamber of Commerce. Yes. Um, so that got us into like, oh, let's go to this. We had the petunia festival. We actually closed the flower shop during the petunia festival, but we were active in things that were going on in the community. Oh, there's flowers, etc. Oh, they're flowers, etc. So you want to be present at things that are happening in your community during the summer, which is marketing. Yeah, right. Yeah, or different than you're doing now, but it was marketing.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, that's totally marketing. So I I would call this internal and external marketing. How about that? So I was thinking about all of these things, and I was thinking about a shop owner right now and their manager, if you have both, which it's always if you do, that's great because two brains are better than one. It's the perfect time to start thinking, okay, what are my goals? What are our summer goals to achieve between now and August? Three months, let's say. Okay. In order to do that, let's say we're gonna come up with three goals, no more than five at the most, because they always say too many, you're never gonna achieve. You're never gonna get anything done. So let's let's pick the top three. So, how do you do that? Great minds, get together, you come up with where our needs are. So you pick the three, then how do you execute those? So, this is where I started going down this deep dive rabbit hole till 11 o'clock last night, up until this morning, and created a little monster, but I came out of the hole because I went too deep. I swam back up, okay, and and I'm okay now. I think I can do it. I created an entire course I could teach at a master's level class, but then I came back. So I started thinking about mindset because that's where everything starts. And I started reading about the reticular activating system in our brains. They call it RAS, R-A-S for short. Now, I have talked about this before when I've talked about empathy, somatic empathy, in that presentation that I have done years ago. And I think I've maybe touched on it on our podcast. But what that is, is if our brain orders information that supports our limiting beliefs, our our reticular activation system will deliver information in support of those limiting beliefs. Okay, so repeat that again. Okay, basically, here's what RAS is it takes what you focus on. So my goal, my goal, and creates a filter that will seek only information that aligns with that for you to validate that for example if if I'm car shopping, okay, I think I I shared this example with you. So my son, when he was 16, we were looking for a new car. Not new, but a car. And he decided for some random reason he wanted an orange Subaru cross trick. And he wanted it with these bars on top with all of these bells and whistles. And Mark and I were like, What? Like, we didn't know this about you. Like, huh? I've seen a cross track before, but I'm not a bright orange one. I've not seen anyway. He showed me pictures, he was like, in his mind, was gonna go off-roading via YouTube. I don't know what this was for a brief moment in time. Anyway, I started seeing these everywhere, everywhere.

SPEAKER_03

And because you hadn't noticed them before.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, not in my conscious mind. I hadn't so he ended up with a black Toyota Camry because parents are paying, and that's what you're getting. However, my brain was filtering these orange cross. And hey, listener, if you have one of these, they're adorable. I think they're great. It was not in the cards for him. They were actually very pricey, to be honest. They were very pricey, and it just wasn't the car for him.

SPEAKER_03

But you're saying the res, as your hands are going from the back of your neck up forward. Yes. Uh I'm just res is what made you notice because it was telling you, oh, that's something that I should be interested in or I need to focus on. So it was bringing it to your forefront.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, yes, it filters out what my belief system is believing, right? And that is what I see. So if I'm manifesting positivity, right? Positive affirmation. Let's say I am working on the culture of my shop. Let's say that would be a good one.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I think that should be a great summer club.

SPEAKER_01

So let's let's say I'm noticing there's a little too much negativity among my employees. There's a little too much drama. I don't know, whatever. And this is one of my goals I'm gonna be working on.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

So as I work on that, that's what I'm gonna be doing. I'm gonna be sending out positive affirmations daily. I'm gonna be posting things visually every day they walk in. I'm gonna have a positive affirmation. I'm gonna be modeling positivity, not Pollyanna fake crap, because that's not gonna fly.

SPEAKER_03

Right. Don't feel that.

SPEAKER_01

They'll know right, right. True, authentic positivity. I'm also the minute I see the culprit in action, I'm going to gently and quietly call their attention, remove them from the situation and have a one-on-one with them. Like I'm going to filter, I'm going to call that filter to where I am constantly aware of what's going on.

SPEAKER_03

So my question is when you have made this conscious decision to make that, obviously, your RAS system, the RAS is kicking in, right? Am I telling my employees, hey, this summer, we're really going to work on creating a more positive attitude within the team. Or is this something just Yes.

SPEAKER_01

No, everybody has to do it. Here's your shop goals, whatever the three may be.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

You're going to write them down as a group. A, B, C.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Everybody visualize them. Tell them to the staff. You're going to put them out in the universe, talk about them. So the words are out there. You might post pictures about them around. So let's say one of them is create some design specials for the summer. You have two designers. I want you each to come up with three favorites that we're going to be rotating throughout the. I don't know. I'm making this up as we go, right? I'm not organized here. Whatever they are. You pull up some favorites that you have, some inspiration. You post them, visualize because the more we're putting out there, the more it's in our face. And it's going to be filtering. Oh, yeah, these are our goals. These are our goals. These are our goals. So then even when we walk out this door, we may see a picture in a coffee shop. And I'm like, oh my gosh, that reminds me of one of the designs I loved that I'm going to be making.

SPEAKER_03

Or if you're in a situation, so let's say we have chosen to change the culture in our shop, just and now I'm in a coffee shop and I see something negative happening, then I'm like, Exactly. Oh, we don't want that. We that's the thing I noticed, which exactly have noticed before because nobody had really brought that to your attention. Exactly.

SPEAKER_01

Wow, that's really kind of percent. Or you're scrolling on TikTok and you hear Simon Snack or some leader talking about toxicity in a flag, and you're like, oh my gosh. Let's recorrect that Lori is scrolling on Lori is scrolling on TikTok. Vonda is is not scrolling. Vonda is is not, she's on a walk. I'm on a walk, and maybe my neighbors aren't and maybe her nod. Yeah, Lori is telling Vonda about something she scrolled on TikTok and something. Right. Just a little correction. Yeah, exactly. Anyway, but you're scroll, fill you're on something and you see something that reminds you of one of the goals back in your store. It is because your RAS kicked in.

SPEAKER_03

So one of the things that I kind of mentioned, if you have a new employee, then you're training them. Maybe you're putting them through sales prep school, the new sales prep school 2.0. And so you're really mindful of all of those steps. Now, again, I am out, maybe I'm at a restaurant and you have a really bad situation going on. Yes, right? Yes. And you, not as the owner manager, but I'm now the one who's gone through the sales prep school. And I'm like, Yes, ooh, oh, I see what Lori means in sales prep school about this. Yes. Because it's brought to my forefront.

SPEAKER_01

Wow. This is my daily or weekend problem. This is every time I go to a restaurant. This is my life. This is why every time I go to a restaurant, I tell you about my problem, whether if it's good or bad. Yeah. And this was my struggle because my RAS kicks in. This is why when I went down this deep dive, like it was revelational to me. Because I'm like, this is, I think, why I jump on Google to do fabulous reviews when I'm at Chili's, Chili's of all places with my dad and order chicken fingers and French fries, because that's what he wants. But my server Ryan was over the top, fabulous. So I have to jump on and give him a five-star review.

SPEAKER_03

Right. Right.

SPEAKER_01

Because I'm like, this guy gets it. Yeah. I hear it. Gets it. Yeah. Like, I can't wait to give Ryan a review. But then I'm at a really, really high-end, nice restaurant. MR server's a jerk to my dad. Like, I can handle a piece to me, but like, don't you do that?

SPEAKER_03

No kidding.

SPEAKER_01

You know what I mean? Like, ah, because I know how customer service is supposed to be.

SPEAKER_03

That is so funny because now it makes sense. Yeah. Like, as you know, I'm halfway through planning AIFD symposium for 2026. And so anything that I'm looking at conference-based, and I'm looking at that in a whole different light, and I'm taking it all in, which I wouldn't care otherwise. I'd be like, no, who cares about that? That's not happening. It's magic. And now you're like, oh, oh, I don't know about that. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. I would think flower shop florists probably get that a lot when they go to attend a funeral.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, no, definitely. Oh, hands down, they're like, oh. They're like, oh visit somebody in the hospital. Or visit someone in the hosp right. Same type of thing. Very hard. Because you're a reason for it. Now there is your freaking Raz. Raz, baby. Man. And it's kind of a good word, it because it kind of does raz you. Get razzed. Yep. It's that.

SPEAKER_01

Isn't that crazy? That is crazy. But at least we have a word for it. And here's the other thing that is really like this is getting a little too deep, I know, but your Raz doesn't know the difference between what is real and what is imagined reality. So give me an example. Here is an example. If I work myself into a panic attack, because I have imagined I am being chased by a herd of buffalo.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

And I am full on a panic attack. My body, my Raz that is making my whole body, because Raz can be used for bad also, negative or positive, depending on what you have your mind set on. My Raz doesn't know if I truly am being chased by buffalo. Oh wow. Or if I'm imagining it to it, I might be.

SPEAKER_03

Interesting. So it goes back to what you talk about all the time, and that's mindset.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. No, that's what I'm saying. That's what's crazy.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That's what's so crazy. It's that's why mindset. And I I probably spent an hour at least reading about how hard well more than an hour, but how yeah, how hard it is to change our mind. And and I gotta tell you it's really depressing. Oh it's very depressing. And I mean, reading the book Mindset talks about that, but when you really, really, really get into the psychology of it, it's really hard. It can be done, it can be done, but it's really god, it's hard. Well, so it's fascinating. And and and I want listeners, especially flowershop owners, to kind of heed that warning because I think it's smart to use keep that in the back pocket when you're hiring, because we uh we talk about skill versus will all the time, but when you are hiring people, even though you're like, I need people, I need people so bad. But when you're sitting across from them and your gut truly does tell you there's red flags here, you need to trust it. Because if they're answering some things that you're like, I don't, I may uh maybe I can change your mind on that. You can't.

SPEAKER_03

Good to know. Good to know. And even when you're going through this trying to change the culture in your shop and you have somebody who is that negative person, we also have to be a little bit careful because now what you're saying is that's really hard for them. It's not like they're not trying. Yeah. Try to help them with some tools to get them more positive. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. It's fascinating. It's a fascinating thing. And people always say, when you read stuff like this, when you hear stuff like this, the people that need to hear it, that need to read it are never the people that are going to. So true.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my gosh, so true. Well, talking about positivity and mindset, we're gonna bring in Marissa.

SPEAKER_01

Marissa Guerrero, yes, with Texas State. She's one of our dear friends.

SPEAKER_03

So, Lori, we're gearing up ready for Texas State, and I'm so excited to go again this year.

SPEAKER_01

You know, I'm really excited about Texas State, number one, because it's my home state here, and you get to come here. And I always love a road trip with you, even if the road trip's gonna be short. It's gonna be short this time. But we also have a guest with us, one of our favorite people, Marissa Guerrero.

SPEAKER_00

Hi guys, it's so nice to see you. Welcome back. So I'm excited you're coming to Expo. Glad to see you shiny faces.

SPEAKER_01

We were there last year, but it's like you every other year you have what big expo, mini expo, or what's only a forum with Texas State Florist Association.

SPEAKER_00

So Expo is the big one. Forums a little smaller, bite-sized, kind of two-day expo's usually three days. And so it's gonna be a really good one. We've got some awesome people coming.

SPEAKER_01

You have some heavy hitters, I will say, because I've been looking at the schedule. And first of all, I will say that you guys like Florida state. The state things I notice are incredibly organized. Don't you think, Vonda? They are like very, very, very organized, way ahead of time, always ahead of schedule, very organized, which we love because nothing like getting something very last minute. And we're like, I'm sorry, we're booked. But we were very excited to hear from you guys wanting us to be a part of it. So we wanted you to come on because I think there is an early registration opportunity. Early registration is June the 6th. I know it's never really quick. Well, it's the end of June, is the Texas State. It's the last weekend in June. So tell us a little bit about it, Marissa. Tell us what's so on the schedule.

SPEAKER_00

Texas State Florist Association, like you said, every other year we put on an expo. So the Texas Floral Expo this year is June the 27th through the 29th in League City, Texas. And that, if you're not real familiar with Texas and you only know the big cities, it's just outside of Houston. So not far away from Houston. We have lots of people actually coming in from out of state. And so that helps to know that that's the area you're going to. That's a Friday, Saturday, Sunday. We have all sorts of hands-on classes, business sessions, mainstage programming, meal functions, all the good stuff that if you've been to an education event, you're familiar with. But I know that there are so many people who haven't been to in-person floral education events. And so our theme for this event is secrets. And the idea around that is that we really want people to open up and give away all of those little secrets that we have, those little bigots that, you know, we kind of hold on to, and not intentionally do we hold on to them, but just those little thoughts, those little tricks and tips that can make you just expand beyond what you perceive as your boundaries as a designer, as a business owner, as a wholesaler or a grower. So I hope that does that for everybody because I think it's going to be a really amazing program.

SPEAKER_03

And I think that kind of sparks something in the designers who have it coming as well. Because I think as a designer, you and I, we have things that maybe aren't secrets, so to speak, but they're tips that we have known for so long. And we just think we do this all the time. And it makes you think as a presenter, what am I doing that would be considered a secret that maybe the younger designers have never heard about? And so those secrets that we have that we use sometimes on a daily basis that we're sharing are kind of cool because it makes the presenter dig down and go, oh, yeah, that's probably something that not everybody does on a daily basis.

SPEAKER_00

I love that. Yeah, we don't always think about those little things that we do that, you know, they're just kind of second nature to us. But like you're saying, you need to put that thought process into why do I do this? What is it that I'm really, really doing? That's what really we were hoping for when we started this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. As I'm listening to you guys also, and this stems from we've been talking to some other states and even SAF about their conventions and talking about what are the benefits of attending a live convention. Because a lot of people are like, I don't have time or it's too expensive, and I can just watch stuff online. And you know what? Yeah, there's a lot of education online, but listening the word secrets, I'm sitting here thinking, when I attend these things live, let's pretend you guys were doing a presentation together, which later on that would be amazing. That would be really, really fun. Think about this. You guys are sharing your own secrets. I'm in the audience. Your secrets spark our secrets in the audience during QA. We start sharing ours. You get 10 times more when you're present physically, truly honestly, than you do when you are just sitting behind the computer. Yes, you get value with online education. We love it. We are virtual, right? There's value, but there is so much more value when you can go in person and hear the tips and secrets because it sparks other people's. Like, oh my gosh, that reminds me. I do that, but then I take it a step further with this tip.

SPEAKER_00

And then somebody else in the room's like, same here, but I do it this way. Well, and I think you bring up such a good point because those conversations are something you can't really have online. Sure, you can reply to a video or something like that, but really are you gonna get a reaction? Are you gonna get an answer back? Right. But that's what I love about in-person events is just the opportunity to get to see people and connect with them on a little bit of a more real level. Not only that, but like it cuts through the clutter. There's so much noise online. Yeah, you go to these in-person events and someone has vetted these designers. They brought these people, these presenters together for a reason. And it's because they think they are the best educators in whatever subject it is that they're going to be talking about. So, like for us, like we have our Texas designer of the year, Brandy Ferrer, and yeah, just an amazing person. But one of the things that she's doing, in addition to being the chair for this year's designer of the year event, is she's teaching an AI class. And so it's really she's done an amazing job learning how AI technology can be used in floristry. And so to get to share those little tips and tricks and secrets with other florists who haven't even jumped into that space, but you're not gonna get that everywhere. And if you do, maybe it's not gonna be geared towards the floral industry or towards design. So that's one that I think is really exciting. And actually, it kicks off the expo. I think it's one of our very first programs.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, she is a very great uh educator for sure. So if anybody has not registered and you have that weekend and you're within driving distance, or get a flight. The flights were fairly inexpensive when I looked at that to come in to see Lori and fly into Houston.

SPEAKER_01

Right. And we've been talking about this on the podcast already. I want to remind people there's two different airports here in Houston, IAH and Hobby. Hobby is the closest one to League City downtown, but either one, you can look at either one and drive down.

SPEAKER_00

Everybody told me to fly into Hobby because it's closer to League City. Right, yeah, on the other side of Texas.

SPEAKER_02

You're on a million miles.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you're all really. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I also think these state expos are a great opportunity to bring your employees if you've never gone to an education live as a team. If you're a little more intimidated to go to a bigger event, go to a state one first because you can divide and conquer. Because I was looking, there's like two consecutive classes in a row, you know, maybe a business one or a design one. Pick one and go to that, and then somebody else go to the other one and then come back and compare notes and share with each other. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03
