Lori we're so excited to be here today and talk about inspiration.

Yes. It's so inspiring to talk about inspiration. What I thought was interesting, I don't know if you caught this when we were putting notes on our shared documents earlier this week to sort of brainstorm about inspiration, what it means to each one of us within minutes. I noticed you and I each had similar but different form of the definition of inspiration and I think it's interesting because it's all about perspective.

I want you to read yours if you can and then I'll read mine.

Okay. So mine for inspiration is the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative or the verb form of that is a sudden brilliant, creative or timely idea. What about you Lori?

Lori 2:04

Well, so I loved that one and I giggled because it does sound a little more structured and intelligent when you wrote yours but mine, the definition I found was a divine influence directly and immediately exerted upon your mind and inner soul , meaning something just happens upon my mind and my soul and I'm like, that's it.

Yeah, the light bulb. Thank you Ellie. Or the other definition we wanted to talk about is, this is why we brought Ellie in. She has a different perspective and sort of a different definition. When we were talking about inspiration, one of the reasons we wanted to do it is because something that cracked me up, I don't know why, but when Ellie is sending us our Slack messages and all these things we're trying to learn, she'll do like great inspo. And I remember the first time she did it, I was like inspo, what's inspo? And then I read through the context clues and realized , Oh, inspiration. So Ellie, what is inspo? What is your definition?

Ellie 3:13

You know, I don't know if I have a definition, Lori . I think inspo is just a quick way of saying inspiration, but I do think it's an energy. It's a feeling. It's that really exciting spark that you get at the beginning of something. The inspiration to me marks a beginning.

I love that. Again, like you said earlier, it's also that light bulb, the light bulb moment of,

Yes. You know what it reminds me of if I'm being really honest, like I can be on Pinterest at night. Like if I can't go to sleep, I'll be scrolling through, I can get inspired like every other picture. What I do with that inspiration, nothing goes away when I go to sleep. Right? So unless I, unless there are those few things that inspire me so much that I actually wake up and I'm still thinking about it, those are the ones that I go back up here to . It has an influence me directly on my body or my soul or some part of me. Um , or as Ellie was saying, if you wake up and you still, when you think about it, it gives you that energy. Like, okay , so what, how do I make that happen?

I think that's a way of filtering out good ideas from just random sparks. So when something really sticks with you, that's what they say about business ideas or pursuing something is to give it a week or sometimes even a month. And if it sticks, if it lasts, if it still makes sense when you're not just in that moment after the moment. That's how you can decide whether or not to pursue an idea.

That's really good. It's very true.

Ellie 5:11

I do want to share one piece of advice that I received from a professor in college and it's probably the one that's stuck with me the most throughout my everyday life, which is when you are looking for inspiration, do not source your inspiration from that physicality, that medium in which you're looking to create and I have a couple examples here. So when we were doing the mood boards of an interior space, if you're designing an office, don't look at photos of an office as your inspiration. Instead go to the library and go through books, architectural books, even details, patterns, textures. One example, one office project that I was doing, I was listening to this song and the song's title was next and we were designing an office space for younger professionals and trying to integrate different generations into this office and designing something cool that everyone would like. Just taking that song next. I thought, okay, the next generation I made my floor plan spelling out N E X T in the floor plan, so if you're looking at it from above, those shapes of the letters kind of dictated the walls in the space. That's a little abstract, but you can create something from something completely different and the result is going to be stronger than if you're just trying to take elements of another office and make it into your own.

Another idea would be flower centerpieces for tables at a wedding that I was planning and then due to covid, it's getting delayed, so I'm not typing flower centerpiece into Pinterest when I'm looking to design something instead, perhaps I'm looking at adjacent ideas like dinner table styling from home magazines like restoration hardware or crate and barrel, seeing what containers they're using on the dinner tables, the textures of the foliage that they use, the metals that they use, and then translating those little seeds into something that is tangible as a flower arrangement as a centerpiece.

I love that because I think where we can get caught up is if you are needing, let's just say a bridal bouquet and then you get on Pinterest as a designer, I'm saying, let's say you have to design a bridal bouquet that is pink and white. I don't know. It's not really your own, right.

Ellie 7:47

Yeah. You struggle with copying and pasting or trying to do it better and it just doesn't turn out the same.

Lori 7:53

Doesn't turn out right.

Ellie 7:55

I'm talking about initial concept thing. Later down the line you can of course look at those images, but when you're trying to create something brand new and fun and your own and set yourself apart from what you're trying to make.

Vonda 8:10

I'm going to go back a long time ago to when I was in junior high and I had an instructor who name was mrs O and everybody loved mrs O and you probably don't remember the days of zoom on TV and it was like, I don't want to presume so you remember that. So that wasn't part of things we listened to and she was into that. But also the simple child song, one of these things is not like the other one of these things just doesn't belong can you tell, which is not like the other. Before finish my song, we would figure out which one was different and then she'd say, and that's good to be different and how can we make that better? So we would expand on that little song, find the different one and how we can do something else different. It was an inspiration tool that the teacher gave us. It's like we're inspired to do different and maybe it was my first encouragement to think outside the box.

And is that a piece of advice that you still use today that helped develop your eye for inspiration and designing? I think maybe so Ellie , you'll look at something that's a little different and maybe it's not going to work for what you want, but it's going to take it to a next level that you can use it in a different way.

well, do you know who was on there? Morgan Freeman. And look where it got him. It inspired him to pursue acting. I'm bringing it back around. Inspiration.

Let's talk about the what. What is inspiring you right now? We're going to do the what? The who and the where. I think this is going to be fun for the different generations here and the different, you know , mindsets I think, right?

Lori 10:05

Well I will start with my wet and when I was typing this out, I had to finally like come to a stopping point because once I started other things started coming into my mind as things that have recently really inspired me. One of the things which is simple and we are all doing it because we're at home so much as just been scrolling through social media, mostly Facebook because that's where all of my interactions are with a lot of our flower clique members and even flower shops that are not members, but I'm just friends with them and it's so fun for me to see. Let's say we just did a webinar about teaching them how to do a Facebook live or really encouraging them to start doing fun Friday favorite lives or all of these things and then scrolling through and seeing some of these men and women who own the flower shops and that have never been on a camera like that before. Putting themselves out there doing it and just my heart and you talk about that explosion of proud aha moment really inspires me to want to do even more like what's the next thing I can think of to help them. That might work that I see working cause I'm not just looking at flower shops . That's one of the things that not only inspires me but it does what you were saying earlier. It takes me to that next level. It actually motivates me.

That's really good. How about you Ellie ? What is your what?

Ellie 11:38

So my, what's for inspiration to have them apply in a world that we're not in quarantine. One of them is records, vintage records. I love to go through like a record store. Not right now of course, but I love to look at the designs and the type faces and the color combinations that are on records to kind of integrate into brands and logos and graphics. So that's a really big source of inspiration for me. Another thing is books. Right now for instance, I was reading a book that was about the scenario in an Italian countryside and the stone cottage with fresh laundry drying in the sun and you know, you can picture yourself there and then I think about how I can translate that into my environment, my, my apartment, my lifestyle, the things I want to wear, just even adjectives from words on a page can do a lot. Another thing is masterclass, which is online learning. There's chefs, there is interior designers, you can learn poker, you can learn so many different things. So that's a really big source of inspiration to learn new skills, but also in the way that they edit the videos. So as we design our design school videos that we're working on right now for our prep school, the way that they're editing the videos and cutting it and doing all these creative angles, that's really inspiring me in the work that I'm producing. And then fashion of course I love like high end fashion and seeing not only the clothing or the shoes, but also the way that they brand themselves in terms of their packaging and things like that. So those are just a few of the things that are inspiring me right now.

Love it. Vonda What about you? What is inspiring you?

Vonda 13:36

What inspires me is kind of strange. I think it's the drive to do things better. Projects inspire me. It inspires me to visualize what we can do better with flower clique with things in my life that I'm inspired by the thought and then I start to visualize and sometimes it's just nature, right? Or it's usually a project. I look at something that's happening and I'm like, Oh gosh, I'm so inspired. Like looking at our flower click arrangements and how I can create a really cool bouqet to make that easy and more productive, works better for everybody all the way around from the farm to the website to the consumer.

So let me ask you this. Over mother's day, because all of our flower shops had, from what we heard had really good mother's day. I think a lot of it was because we weren't expecting it. I mean, they weren't expecting it. It was just such a wonderful surprise. What inspired you? Because there were times you and I were talking, we both almost wanted to cry from happiness. What were they giving you? It wasn't just because they loved your designs because you need those accolades, but what do you think it is? We both do that, right?

Yeah. Yeah. We take that energy, the positive energy, and it makes us want to do even better again, take it to the next level.

Lori 14:58

Yeah, no, I think it's so interesting because when I see you, where I see the light bulb as Ellie was saying, go off in your head is when you are around driven people, they drive you even more and your driven but driven people drive you even more where a lot of people are quite the opposite. If people around too many driven, they're like, Oh God, give me a break. You thrive on it. You, you breathe off of it.

So that moves us into the who, the who gives you inspiration, Lori. Right ?

Lori 15:36

So I could have written five pages on my who's , um, but I didn't, so I kind of had to divide mine up as far as who inspires me in this industry, like from a business perspective and then even a personal, but I do believe they intertwined . So it's what makes me me, right? The first thing that popped in my head when I was thinking of the who's was society of American florists, and I know that's sounds strange, but here's why they have inspired me so much, especially during the covid 19 shut down . They stepped up like not just one of them, but every one of their more people. Everyone on their staff. They worked tirelessly to try to advocate for this industry that didn't have a super large voice and a super high budget. Like they went to bat for everyone. They opened up their webinars and any source of knowledge they had, they offered to anybody that needed it. And it inspired me not only to , cause I would go to those things and learn for myself even, you know, things that PPP , uh , all of those legal things that that's all foreign to me. Right. But it inspired me to listen more and not be fearful of that kind of language. When people are talking about like labor issues and employee issues and other things, I've always kind of put it off to the side. But they really inspired me and I know they inspired other people that didn't even really know who they are. Now they do. So that was my business. Another one, there is a girl, her name and you know her. I actually think I know her because of you Renee Touche. Is she a Teleflora education specialist?

Okay. Okay. Remember the American Institute of floral designers and an education specialist? Yes. Okay. So I only know her through social media, but something about her I gravitate to . She has been making some of the best videos from perspective. And let me tell you why, because I'm not a designer, but she'll do a video on just a basic bouquets of flowers and how you can change it around and make it pretty. She did one over mother's day week that you are to change water every day for your flowers at home. I did not know that. So I was inspired. I didn't know. I didn't know. But here's what happened because she inspired me. I started doing it. I kid you not. Within a couple of days one of my friends were on this group text . My high school friends texted me cause for some reason they think I know everything about flowers, which I do not. And they had just been to a peony farm and their peonies were not very old and they were like, what ? They're already dying . And I said, Hey, change the water every day. Give them a little trim . That's a Vonda thing. All three of them start doing it and now their flowers are lasting. So Renee inspired me to influence my three friends that don't anything about flowers either. So I thought that was pretty cool.

That is pretty cool.

Lori 18:53

Yeah. So on a personal level, I have so many friends , uh , family members that speak into my life that make me want to be better. One of my dear friends from college, her name is Laura, she's a missionary. She and her family, they lived for 10 years in Honduras. Um, she's an attorney in Dallas, had the life everyone would dream of and they decided they had a calling. They have recently had to move back here. And their daughter, who is a little Hundurian girl Kumi, she is eight, couldn't come with them because of the laws. And they were going through all of the court things. And then covid 19 happened. So she has been apart from her youngest child for months. She can't go in and can, we can't come out. And I watch her and I speak with her almost every day and I see how she keeps momentum and she still has joy in her heart. And that inspires me. It inspires me to want to be a better, stronger person and to always try to have a better outlook. My dear friend Mindy, again, same, same college class, but she has some nonprofit groups. All of that stemmed from when her son and father were murdered because of some racist things that were going on. So she quit her job. She works tirelessly now to try to make the world a better, kinder, more loving place. So I'm inspired by Mindy. Every time I'm around her. Um , and I feel like those kinds of inspirations, like they make me better and it inspires me to want to give back to whether it's a flower shop owner or my neighbor or anyone in my life because these people have built in to me. So again, I could go on and on. My son, my oldest child, all my kids inspire me, but my oldest son for mother's day sent me a video that did nothing but build into me. And I have never received anything like that in my life, how he sees me and it was the most wonderful gift I've ever received and it inspired me not only to go back to, gosh, there's a lot of things I don't do anymore that gave me so much joy and did make me better. Maybe I need to figure out how to bring some of that back. So I think I try to look at the world every day and come in contact with one person that's going to give me that light bulb, you know, when I'm not even expecting it. So I'll stop there.

They are good. They are good.

Ellie 21:46

Yeah, you're way better. Lori, my, I have Zaha Hadid who is my favorite architect. She passed away a few years ago, but she's married, futuristic and I get inspired from her Wes Anderson. He's known for his very interesting surrealism in his films, like grand Budapest hotel. I'm inspired on Instagram and tiktok. Actually there's a lot of lifestyle influencers that I take a lot of inspiration from, from the way that they decorate to just everything about their life is very inspiring. Just I can take little pieces of them and try to incorporate into my own and, and then of course my mother. We wouldn't be here without her. I literally, I wouldn't have been early , you know, she's driven, she has endless energy and we all want to be more like Vonda. Always the drive to do better. I'm going to end on that note.

Well thank you. my who and my where sometimes go hand in hand, but look at who I look at. Well, of the flower business who inspires me in the flower business side, I would look to Bill LaFever because he's very, he's brilliant in the flower business and all of his knowledge. So I look at that. But if they look at business, just business, I look at my son Sayer because Sayer is like the business guru and helps me in all things business. Now I go to floral design, the who and my floral design. There are many, but when I look to a person that I'd say, I love the techniques and everything that's going on, I look to Joyce Mason Monheim . I draw so much from her marketing and floral, Julie Polar, she's has all the little things that can do that are, are brilliant. I'm just like, wow. How did you come up with that? And when it comes to, I'm inspired by Ellie. She loves fashion and it shows, I look, I watch and I take her advice and of course there's my email sometimes inspires me because we have the business people. We follow being the retail doctor or the Mark Murphy's and that it gives me inspiration. Then of course there's the social media, but oftentimes I find inspiration in the silence and just walking outside. Maybe I'm doing a project outside, but I'm finding inspiration in those little things.

I always have the best ideas in the shower. I need to get those bath crayons and then you can write on the wall. Yeah, I've been meaning to do that.

What do you think it is? Why ? Why in the shower?

Ellie 24:44

Something about that you're at your most relaxed state and you're not trying to force ideas and I think there's something that happens.

Lori 24:52

Yeah, I don't know. It's crazy. You need to like a clipboard attached to the top part of your shower that you can write down with a dry erase marker.

I've had many conversations with Lori when she's dripping wet standing outside the shower.

and they've been super productive.

So we did the who and the what. Oh, here's the where, and I think this is interesting. Again, like we were saying, it kind of all of these mix in, but when we say where it's like what sources do you go do ? Where do you go to Ellie in your what? You've given a lot of great ideas, but what are your main sources? If you need to decide , let's say you have to do a new website or you have to do something new and you're like, Oh , I don't even know to start, where would you start going for that?

Ellie 25:43

So there's two things. There's one, which is the online world. You know, there's websites like trend land and paternity, like pattern-pity. Those two sites are really nice for if I'm trying to create something digital and I need some inspiration. Travel of course is where I get my main source of inspiration. Just walking aimlessly, getting lost, even in my own city. I mean there's so much to Los Angeles to explore. And you know, a lot of times I'll take a Saturday and just drive to new little neighborhood and walk around and look at the buildings, look at the flowers. I mean the landscaping and the foliage out here is incredible. So just little things like that. There's this flower shop that I was in in Paris awhile ago and there were these, you know, back in the day, I mean obviously I grew up in the flower shop and we always used to hate on those roses that were like 10 different colors. They were like a swirl multicolor. We thought they were the cheesiest thing ever. And when I was in this flower shop in Paris last year, there was this baby's breath. And I think even Bill Doren has it now, but it was this baby's breath that are all these pastel colors. And it brought me back to one, how baby's breath was such a thing. Like when in the nineties and then it wasn't. And then it was very fopaux. And then this multicolored flower that, you know, we used to think were the ugliest thing, but somehow this multicolored baby's breath was so beautiful. And so it's like you can be pleasantly surprised by something when you're not expecting it. So little details like that. And then the last thing is something that I did this morning, which was go to home Depot and there are a few things that I can jump out of bed early for in the morning. I'm not a morning person, but for some reason I got up at 6:00 AM I got ready, I went to home Depot at six 30 and I was, I love walking around. I got, you know, different paints and stains and then you would never know from my shopping cart that I live in a one bedroom apartment because I was inspired. I was inspired to do all these projects. So those are, those are my wheres.

I know one other thing that is inspiring you right now are imperfect food boxes that were getting,

Ellie 28:10

yes, that's a good one. But you get all these different vegetables and produce and meats and fruit. Yeah, I'm inspired because you don't know everything that's in your box. So you're kind of, and you get so much of it, so much food delivered to your door and you have to use it. And so, exactly. I'm inspired to create new recipes this week and cook, get creative that way. Cooking is definitely,

Lori 28:34

you hit the nail on the head when you were all texting and you said, it's so funny you looked at your box and I'm like, what can I make? It's not ugh. What am I going to make? It was, wow, what can I make with all of this? You know.

Ellie 28:46

and I hope that's the same for flowers too, right? It's like when people get them in and it's like, okay, what can I do with these ingredients?

Lori 28:55

It would be like Vonda getting a box of flowers , not maybe not in necessarily a box of produce, but a box of flowers.

Vonda 29:02

Both. I would be inspired by a box of produce as well, but flowers would definitely drive me and Ellie, you hit the nail on the head with lumber companies, the big box stores, I mean we love to walk through and see what we can create with this piece of plumbing. Maybe this is electrical wire, whatever. It is so inspirational for designers. It's not just seeing that your design in a different way, but even floral designers. We look at that and say, how can we incorporate that into our next piece of art, floral art. T.

hat is so funny because I've never been inspired at home depot. Now TJ max . That is an entirely different story.

Vonda 29:43

Okay, what are yours? You go for it, Lori.

Lori 29:46

So where do I go for inspiration? Well, Ellie is this way too. We all love books, right? All three of us actually love books. I like books about business. I like devotion books. I like good realistic fiction books. One of the books that I do pull out a lot and I talk about it before is the everything is figureoutable. I know we joked about this a long time ago. I was reading this at a very pivotal moment in my life as far as job transition and I was with you guys and you talk about inspiration. There's a whole chapter on knowing when to quit and not feeling like a failure. So books inspire me. They get me thinking outside of myself when I can read somebody else's story about something they went through, it inspires me to let go of fears or trepidation . Another book that I can't tell people enough about is called, tell me more by Kelly Corrigan. She's on TV a lot. She's on podcasts. It is stories about the 12 hardest things I'm learning to say. So she makes it funny, but she inspires you to be real with who about who you are. Um, so those are two really big things. Podcasts, I listened to Jen Allwood, I listened to Jen Hatmaker, I listened to um, a wonderful podcast that has really changed me called pantsuit politics. And it is two best friends both on different parts, different parties, but they love one another dearly. They're both highly intelligent and more than anything, they're respectful and they try to, they actually have a book out. It says, I think it's called, I think you're wrong, but I'm listening. It's a great book. Not even about just politics, about getting along with everyone in life in general. Yeah. So they have really inspired me to go, you know what, I don't have to have the exact same mindset as my neighbor. I can love her and we can find more in common than not in common. So those are the things right now that are inspiring me. Of course, my , my Bible inspires me every day. I try to read every morning. And so that's it. Those are my go tos right now. And Vonda and Ellie , I will say, you guys are my go tos. We have had some of the most amazing brainstorming, inspirational, loving idea, whatever you want to call it, that , that have made me a better person and have made me want to be better. So my, my hope and prayer is that everybody that listens to this can think of one or two people in their lives that they're like, yep , those are my go to people. Those are the people that me, at least on a weekly basis.

Yeah. And I think that's why we as flower clique works so well together because we inspire one another. And when I look at some of the graphics Ellie does, it makes me inspired to make my webinars that much better. Or my presentation because it's the inspiration from this that builds on. And then Lori , you get in there and you say, Oh my gosh, you know, you're excited.

I just can't wait to tell everybody about it, because I can't wait to tell them. So you have to look at this.

Yes. And then of course then we have Kami who inspires me because of what she's doing on the websites and how she is listening to our members and wants to make everything that much better and Denise is inspiring because here she is. Oh my gosh. She's in the back end doing all this and she's so excited to do that. Audrey then wants to make sure the farm to flower shop thing, everybody's flowers are perfect. And then now with the celebration of life guide, she's doing that. And of course Leslie is making sure.

between that and her Google my business and things now everybody, we inspire each other when we get together, Oh my gosh, yeah, many light bulbs are going off.

right. One layers upon the other. I know that we're fortunate and , but I think it's interesting. Every once in a while when I get a call from a flower clique member or maybe a flower shop that's not a member but has seen us or , and they make that comment, they're like, you guys are fun and they don't mean like silly going back to Ellie's word, there's an energy about us that just works. I think a big part of it is we are genuinely for one another. Like I am your biggest cheerleader. You are Ellie's biggest cheerleader Ellie is my biggest cheerleader.

Yeah. Yeah. I sure hope so because I don't think we really know how to not be authentic, you know, almost to a fault. I don't know.

What's giving me life besides this little thing we got going right now? It's been very fun. But what's giving me life is, you know how we're all in quarantine, right? You know that you're aware. So my family has a hard time finding something on TV that we can watch together as a family because myself, I don't like scary stuff. I don't like violence stuff. I don't like mean stuff. You know? I like home and garden. I like food network and I like national geographic and animal planet. So we have found the show of all shows. You guys, I kid you not. It is on Saturday nights on animal planet. We record it. It is called saved by the barn. So good. This guy, this young guy, he was like software tech in the Austin, Texas, making six figures. His dad calls him like, Hey, grandma was going to sell the ranch. What do we do? He has made it an animal sanctuary for unloved and crippled in messed up Animals that most people were going to kill and he saves them and he's got sheep and goat and ducks and donkey. So many donkeys. It's like a whole family of donkeys and they all have names like Mike, Bill. It's so good. We all love it. And we r ecord it and we just, we like binge watch it. It will truly inspire you to go, wow, what am I doing? I haven't even saved a dog, you know, like I want to go save a ny animal. So that's what's giving us life right now.

Okay, well I'm just going to go cause mine's quick. Rain is actually giving me life right now. We haven't had rain for a long time. We've had fires because it's been so dry and so we're getting some beautiful rain right now. So that's giving me life.

Okay. Mine is that I am moving into a new apartment tomorrow and this is the longest I've been in a place in 10 years, which is 2 years and I'm only moving two doors down, so I'm good with that, but I feel like every time I move I feel like it's new year's day again and I reset. I organize everything, I organize my closet, what I want to wear every day, like everything changes a little bit into a little bit more of where I want to be and who I want to be. So I'm excited for a fresh start.
