How to Start Running with Fleet Feet Raleigh

Chris Newport, RDN, CISSN, EP Episode 43

Coach Chris talks with Gina James and Sharon Kyner from Fleet Feet Raleigh and Morrisville. If you or someone you know is hesitant to start running, Gina and Sharon have some great tips and ideas to be a more confident, consistent runner or walker.

Sharon and Gina share their stories about how they got into running. Sharon, who started running at age 47, did her first 10K a year later with over 40,000 people and describes how she loves running regardless of how her times are "extremely mediocre."  Gina was convinced to run by her sister with the urge to teach people how to avoid the mistakes she made, going from mentoring to the run group coordinator.

They describe how their training programs help with what to expect on race day, mental preparation, nutrition needs, gear selection and more. If you can be a well-prepared runner or walker, you'll be a more confident athlete and stick with it!

Their goal is to get everyone involved in running (or walking), so they have lots of training programs to accommodate people at all levels. Sharon describes how they "give you permission to be at the beginning." Gina describes how she enjoys seeing "repeat" runners and witnessing meaningful friendships flourish through their training programs.

We discuss Fleet Feet's training programs, including:

  • Make it a Mile 4 week training program to make it 1 mile
  • No Boundaries 10 week program for 5K (3.1 miles)
  • 10K, Half Marathon & Full Marathon Programs
  • Fleet Feet Academy Virtual Program
  • PR Squad speed program
  • Trail Running Program in the summer
  • Core Run with running and core work
  • Walking Warriors for walkers only

(if you don't see them now, check back often or sign up for their newsletters as COVID restrictions ease)

They've integrated some COVID-19 protocols, like individual appointments, with can be booked online, which is an efficient and organized way to serve their customers. We also talk about why it's better to buy shoes at a local shop versus online (shop local, everyone!).
