All Things Mental Health
Neurodiversity and Belonging
U-Belong student researcher Finty engages with her experiences as a neurodiverse student at university with Faith Ross, a Specialist Mental Health/Autism Mentor and a PhD Student at King's College London. Faith’s research explores a strength-based approach to supporting neurodivergent students. The two discuss the importance of recognising and valuing neurodiversity and explore strategies for creating inclusive and supportive spaces where every student can thrive. This episode aims to inspire a more accepting and accommodating university culture that celebrates all forms of cognitive diversity.
Faith mentions using the SMART strategy to support her with her neurodivergence in an academic setting. This is a goal-setting framework that uses the acronym SMART to help create clear, achievable, and meaningful goals:
1. Specific: The goal is clearly defined and unambiguous
2. Measurable: The goal includes a metric or number to measure progress and determine when the goal has been achieved
3. Achievable: The goal is realistic and attainable within the allocated resources and timeframe
4. Relevant: The goal is meaningful and aligned with the overall strategy
5. Time-bound: The goal has a specific date by which it must be completed
This helps Faith break down her tasks each day and supports her with short-term and long-term goals.
