Podcast Description: History of Yoga – 200-Hour YTT Exclusive Lecture

This special lecture is created exclusively for our 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training students. It is part of your foundational studies and is intended to deepen your understanding of yoga beyond posture practice.

In this episode, we explore the real, layered history of yoga — from the Indus Valley Civilization and early Vedic ritual culture, through the philosophical revelations of the Upanishads, the transformative teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, and the psychological framework of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. We examine how Hatha Yoga brought the body into focus during the medieval period, and how modern postural yoga evolved in the 20th century through figures such as Krishnamacharya,  and Indra Devi.

This lecture also addresses important historical realities — including the role of women in yoga’s development, the evolution of Sun Salutations and modern asana systems, and how yoga transitioned from an inward spiritual discipline to a global wellness movement practiced by millions today.

You will gain clarity on key concepts such as Atman, Brahman, karma, liberation, breath as life-force, and the shift from outer ritual to inner realization. We also discuss the difference between ancient yoga philosophy and the modern studio-based practice many know today.

This is not a simplified timeline. It is a thoughtful exploration of yoga as a living tradition — a lineage that has adapted across centuries while continuing to ask the same essential question: Who am I beneath the fluctuations of the mind?

Please keep this lecture within our training community. You may revisit it anytime during your course as part of your study and reflection.

Understanding the history of yoga strengthens your integrity as a teacher. When you know where yoga comes from, you teach with more clarity, depth, and respect for the tradition.

We are honored to guide you on this journey.
