For lot of us, myself included, the resetting of the calendar is a good time to look back and try and figure out two fundamental things:

  1. What could I be doing better?

&

  1. How can I go about improving on those things?

As leaders, these questions can seem so broad that they somehow become both vague and insurmountable.

The basketball legend Larry Bird once said: “I wasn't real quick, and I wasn't real strong. Some guys will just take off and it's like, whoa. So I beat them with my mind and my fundamentals.”

So perhaps, when faced with these fundamental questions, we would be best served by looking at how our own “fundamentals” are serving us.

In that vein, this week’s episode can best be viewed as a “back to basics” conversation with my friend and fellow attorney, Stewart Shurtleff.

Stewart has specialized in the area of construction law for nearly two decades, first in private practice, and most recently as the CLO of Osburn Contractors. He is also the co-host of the 17Twenty Podcast.

We discuss why the little things going wrong get under the skin, the correlation between being a good lawyer and a good partner, and why, no matter what role you find yourself in, you’re a leader.

I couldn’t have asked for a better conversation to start off the New Year.
