Care to Change Counseling - Practical Solutions for Positive Change
Healing From Trauma Bonds
Show Notes

Join guest and therapist, Jared Jones, as he and Care to Change's director and therapist, April Bordeau, discuss trauma bonds. They review the definition of trauma bonds, the cause of trauma bonds, how to recognize if you or someone you love is caught in the web of a trauma bond, and tips for breaking free or helping a loved one.

Tips when considering if you're in a trauma bond include:

  • keeping a log of each time incidents occur to determine if there is a pattern
  • including trusted others who can help resource, support and encourage you,
  • setting boundaries for emotional and physical safety (always seeking safety if there is a threat)
  • looking for support from others in the healing process

Tips for helping loved ones include

  • being patient, knowing this is not a logical issue and can't always be addressed with reason
  • listening to help and hear and notice objectively what is happening
  • befriending and familiarizing yourself with patterns to be able to point them out
  • modeling healthy relationships both with the loved one and others
  • ensuring safety needs are met
