Speaking of Phenomenal | Journalism for Women and Gender-Expansive Voices
Speaking of Phenomenal is an independent podcast covering women and gender-expansive people mainstream media hasn't found yet. Host Amy Boyle, a multimedia journalist and adjunct lecturer in photojournalism and visual storytelling at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, reports longform narrative conversations with women and gender-expansive people doing significant work the news cycle has yet to document. The work began in 2018 as the 52 Phenomenal Women Project, a portrait storytelling series that produced 104 reported profiles and was covered by the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Reader and NBC5. The podcast launched in October 2020 as the audio extension of that journalism. Now in its sixth season, with 65 episodes and counting, Speaking of Phenomenal has reached 100 countries and 782 cities. Every person you'll hear has a story the world should know. Welcome back to the Speaking of Phenomenal Podcast, I'm your host, Amy Boyle. In today's solo episode, we're exploring a theme that touches each of our lives, yet often goes unnoticed in the hustle of our daily routines. Today, we're talking about "The Power of Pause and Recognizing Your Own Limits."
As we navigate the complexities of life, career, and personal aspirations, it's easy to get caught in a cycle of constant doing. But what happens when we stop? When we pause and truly listen to what our mind and body are telling us?
The power of pause is not just in taking a break, but in the clarity it brings. It's in these moments of stillness that we find our true strength and understand our limits. It’s not about stopping our progress but recognizing when to slow down to go faster.
Recognizing your own limits is an act of courage. It's acknowledging that to give our best, we must also give ourselves the time to recharge. It's understanding that our limits are not barriers, but rather signposts guiding us towards more sustainable paths to our goals.
Today, let's also talk about the responsibilities many of us shoulder - taking care of a parent, a loved one, or simply making time for our own health appointments. It's easy to put these off, thinking our energy must always be directed outward. But pausing to attend to these needs is not a sign of weakness; it’s an act of strength and self-awareness.
Taking care of others requires us to be at our best, and ironically, that means taking care of ourselves first. Whether it's accompanying a parent to a doctor's appointment or scheduling that long-postponed check-up for ourselves, recognizing the need to pause and address these aspects of our lives is crucial. It speaks volumes about our ability to manage our limits and prioritize what truly matters.
In the spirit of today's theme, I invite you to take a moment after this podcast to pause. Reflect on your current pace. Are you listening to your body? Are you acknowledging your limits or pushing past them to the point of burnout? Are you making time for the essential things, not just for others but for yourself as well?
As phenomenal women, we thrive on challenges, but let's not forget the power of pause. It’s in these moments of stillness that we often find our greatest insights and make the most significant strides forward.
And, if there’s a phenomenal woman in your life whose story needs to be heard, drop us a note. Share your thoughts and let us know who you want to hear interviewed on this platform. Our stories are diverse, but our strength is universal. Let's continue to uplift and inspire each other.
Thank you for joining me on this journey of reflection and empowerment. Remember, the strongest action you can sometimes take is to pause, breathe, and align with your true purpose. Here's to recognizing our limits and transforming them into our greatest strengths, not just for our own good, but also for those we care for.
Until next time, stay phenomenal!
