Yes You

She Doesn't Know It Yet, But...

Annie Carter

In this episode, I guide you through a simple but powerful exercise inspired by the 'she doesn't know it yet, but...' socials trend, with a meaningful twist. It's about helping you tune into what you really want, creating more clarity, alignment and momentum.

You might call it manifesting (I share some thoughts on that too).

Have a listen, try the exercise.
And see what unfolds.

My lovely friend. Welcome. It's good to have you here with me. I am on Warren Jury country, and I want to pay respect to elders, past and present. Hey, are you familiar with this Instagram trend? It's been around for a while now that has people share a photo of themselves or a video of themselves from something in their past and add the caption, she doesn't know this yet, but.

And then go on to say what has changed since then. And usually it's about some significant change that's occurred in their life. They're things like she doesn't know it yet, but she's about to meet the love of her life or she doesn't know it yet, but her business is about to triple in size in the next six months.

Or she doesn't know it yet, but she's about to make a life changing decision. You've probably seen them, and if not, I'm sure you get the idea. They're really sweet way of reflecting on change in life, and also on the fact that you never do know what's just around the corner. You can't always see the things that are just out of reach for you at this time.

You never know. Things could be just about to take an exciting turn for you. So today I'm inviting you to a little exercise using this trend, but in a slightly different way. So rather than looking back on a photo and reflecting on what's happened since then, I mean inviting you to take a photo of yourself. Now take a photo of yourself today and then imagine that you are in the future.

So imagine that you're one year, three years, five years, ten years down the track and looking back and writing a caption about the photo that you took today. Start with the words. She doesn't know it yet, but. Or they don't know it yet, but. And then add in the things that you want to be true. What do you want to be looking back on a year five years, ten years down the track and saying, were just around the corner for you at the time that you took this photo?

So what are the things that you want to be true? What tone do you want your life to take from here? What do you want to see in your business or in your work? Who do you want to enter your life? What change do you want to make? What steps do you want to take in your life? What do you want to see in the world?

This doesn't have to be about you personally or only about you personally. It could be. How do you want things to be different in the world? She doesn't know it yet, but a free Palestine is just around the corner. Write it as though you're looking back on it, as though it has already happened, and you can focus on one particular thing.

Or you might write about a bunch of different things that you imagine could happen between now. This point where you take a photo of yourself today and where you'll be in the future, looking back and reflecting on how things have changed. So this is not an exercise just for doing in your mind, although you may already be starting to do that, but I'd really encourage you to actually do this.

So it might be a journaling exercise. So you could take a photo and then write in your journal. You might take a photo with your phone and then in the editing function on your phone, just put some text over the top of the image. You don't have to share it with anyone though you can, but you might just keep it there for yourself.

You could send an email to yourself with the photo and then the text of. She doesn't know it yet, but you might even go into Canva and do it as though you're preparing a post like a carousel for Instagram. And just each different slide has some other aspect of what's just around the corner for you. What's ahead that you don't realize is coming just yet, but one day you'll look back on it and go,

See how that rolled out? You don't have to post it, but you could if you wanted to. Just put it out there at this point or send it to me. I would love to receive it. Like putting it in the vault with me. So it's a simple exercise. And really, you might recognize this as a manifestation exercise. And I always give the idea or the word manifesting a bit of side eye.

It just doesn't sit quite right with me. And I think there's a few reasons for that. I think one is still part of my Christian hangover, as I call it. Some residual ideas and feelings that I have from many years deep in church culture where manifesting was, a different idea than what it is in kind of neo spiritual world.

Had different connotations, partly, I think, also because of the privilege that's tied up in this idea of manifesting. Have you seen those memes that say, maybe you manifested it? Or maybe it's white privilege and like, they really ring true and partly because of the pseudoscientific nature of it. You see some people kind of trying to push the sciency aspect, but I'm not sure that it's actually really there.

But hey, hit me up if I'm wrong on that. All of that aside, I have found some exercises like this to be really helpful and seemingly effective. And so however you feel about manifesting, whether that's the term that you want to put on this, here's what I think that this exercise can offer three things. The first one is clarity

There's something in just taking the time to consider what do you want? When I sat down to do this myself, I had to stop and think. In a year's time, or in 5 or 10 years, what do I want to be looking back on in my life and celebrating? What are the things that I hope are just around the corner for me?

You can easily just get frustrated about not getting anywhere in life or feeling a bit stagnant, but that often is actually just a result of not being clear on where you even want to go in the first place. So asking yourself, well, what do I want? How do I want to feel? What does success mean to me? Can be really, really powerful and clarifying in itself.

And then that process starts another process in your brain. The reticular activating system will start scanning your life for cues and opportunities and connections that align with this vision that you have. Articulate this vision that you've got more clear on. The next thing is alignment. So you will start to naturally align yourself with the possibility of this reality that you have envisioned.

So the brain doesn't know the difference between actually having an experience and just a vivid imagination of the experience. And so by doing this kind of mental rehearsal of it, by writing it out, by being clear on it, by feeling the feelings of this vision that you have, your mind will start to normalize it for you. So where otherwise, as this sort of far off idea, your brain would naturally kind of keep it as a far off idea, by resisting it, by holding limiting beliefs about it and keeping it at a distance, and even by going into fear about the possibility of it.

Whereas by mentally rehearsing it as you do, by just getting clear on it, creating that vision and imagining yourself looking back and having experienced it all as your reality. You start to train your mind to see it as tolerable and normal and even familiar in that more neo spiritual speak. It's about vibing at that, at the frequency of the thing that you want.

And another way of looking at that is just aligning your nervous system and your expectations and your beliefs around what's possible with that reality, which opens you up to it in a way that you wouldn't have been otherwise. And then thirdly, all of this sets you up for action. It puts you in a place of readiness to take action in the direction of this vision.

It can just open your mind to even wonder about what the first step might be. What action could you take here? What door might you push on in the direction of this vision? Where could you show up with the intention of moving towards this as your reality? So give it a try. Like I said, not just as a mental exercise.

Actually do this. Like now before you go listening to another episode or heading off to do something else, or if now's not the right time for you, allocate some time to do it. Just block out half an hour for yourself to give this some attention. Let yourself go through this process and then really fully feel what the reality would feel like for you to be creating this post a year down the track.

Looking back on the photo that you took today and reflecting on everything that's happened for you, everything that's opened up, changes that have taken place in your life and immediately around you or in the world more broadly, and then save it somewhere. So save it in your phone. Or like I said, email it to yourself and you could have it kept like a vision board.

Something that you return to on a regular basis. Maybe every day you allocate some time just to look through what you've written and the photo that you've taken, and to feel what it would feel like to be down the track and looking back, knowing that those changes have occurred. Maybe it's something that you returned to as part of a goal setting practice once a week, once a month, every quarter, once a year.

Perhaps you post it. Go ahead and put it out there on social media, like an expression of faith, loud and proud that you are open to this reality unfolding in your life. Or like I said, send it to me. DM it to me. I would love to be the keeper in some way of this vision for you. And just to give you a thumbs up, give you a high five to believe in it with you and for you.

Okay, so that's it for real quick episode today, but I hope that you will take it and actually do this. I'd love to know how you find the process and also down the track when you look back and you go, whoa, like actually these things have eventuated in my life, then I definitely want to know about that too.

All right, my friend, thank you for listening. Sending you loads of love. I'm looking forward to chatting to you again soon. Bye.
