Attchment to Pleasure and Avoidance of Pain
In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali there are two terms that explain this dilemma completely. Raag is attachment and dwesh is aversion. If you have one then you have to have the other. They are like two sides of the same coin. When you become attached to someone then at some point you will be angry or dissatisfied with them. You need to have that person do that which pleases you and brings you joy and have them not leave or do that which you don't like that brings you pain. So if your enjoyment of life is based on that person and it could be a child, life partner, or even a work associate, that you overvalue, eventually you will either get angry and or you will disregard their usefulness and even leave them.
As this is human nature you can't avoid raag and desh. But through the awareness of how this process works, you can remain free by not believing in it. Through meditation, you become free from raag and desh as you are no longer only depending on someone else for your satisfaction in life.
