“Never tell a young person that anything cannot be done. God may have been waiting centuries for someone ignorant enough of the impossible to do that very thing.” – G. M. Trevelyan
Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of Healing Your Own Pain. Today’s podcast is called: What If You Are The Chosen One. My name is Greg, I’m an expert level MFR therapist and owner of Glen Ellyn Myofascial Release, an in-person and on-line treatment center for pain relief, injury rehabilitation and physical and emotional healing.
How far back can you remember? What you can’t consciously remember, your body does. Everything that’s ever happened to you is recorded there, and called tissue memory. So, you hear a lot nowadays about early childhood trauma that may be unconsciously affecting your behavior, even today. But there’s another memory that often gets overlooked. It’s the part of you that remembers when the world was magic, and you were magical, when everything was possible? When you didn’t know your body ended at your skin, that everything was a part of you, and you, part of it. The wonder of it all, and what you could do. And when you imagined something happening in your life, a food or toy you wanted, or your dad or mom to coming to you, and then, what you wanted appeared. And you thought: I did that. I made it happen. The thrill of the power you possessed. You were a superhero. The world was a new and endless wonder. And you were the center of it all. You could see and hear whatever you imagined. Could see and talk to beings that others could not see or hear. And for that short moment in time, it was true. For a while, parents indulged you in your creativity, your power, your specialness. A bright world of endless possibility.
And then one day, it all came crashing down. Your caregivers began to tear down your magic kingdom. There was no tooth fairy they said, no Easter bunny, no Santa Claus, those friends of yours; they’re not real, and worst lie of all, you’re not a superhero. Time to grow up, come down out of the clouds and hit the ground, hard. They forced you to assume a false (actually a secret) identity. They made you swallow the red pill and see the fearful, competitive, even dangerous world that they inhabited. And they called this world, reality. At first, you did not, could not see this world of theirs. You wondered why they would use their power to create such a world.
And now, when you let out your full-throated “barbaric yell” from your gut as you always had, something was different. Instead of responding with love and caring to your needs, for the first time you saw you had angered the gods above you, their faces twisted in fear, even threat. How did this happen. What did you do to displease them so?
What happened to you is part of a tribal ritual that has lasted for millenia. Though they are unaware of it, your power was felt as a threat by your parents. Because just below the surface, they know they abandoned their own power for the sake of survival. We all did. Its the cost of tribal membership. Every member must surrender their power to the one, or the few, to be included. Not just families, but nations, religions, philosophies are based on this premise. In exchange for protection we were convinced we had no power. It was out there. We needed someone, something else to save us. And yet, there are still places in the world, have always been where people/cultures who have retained the power to see and create beyond what our tribe had given up long ago, then forgot. As noted author, Anita Moorjani states, We are 6 sensory beings living in a 5 sensory world. It’s the same as if we decided to go through our lives with our eyes shut. Don’t open your eyes. It’s witchcraft and could drive you insane, so we intentionally give up that sense and over time forget that we could ever see.
But the superpower we all have, that is our birthright, is our intuition, or inner guide who knows what’s best for us. Something no outside expert has access to. Only you do. We are creators and control our lives by what we choose to believe, to put our faith in. That includes our health, wealth, physical potential and even appearance. We now know that taking a sugar pill substituted for medicine still works if we believe it. Also, that if your doctor tells you are getting better, you will. Not because what he is doing, but because you believe in him. People who get fake surgery vastly improve because they believe its working. The characters in Oz all get what they wanted, even with their bogus awards because they believed in the power of the wizard. I think the immense popularity of superhero movies today shows a desire to reconnect to that power within all of us. Uncover the magic we buried long ago.
Think of what that’s really saying. It’s saying that all the doctors, therapists, teachers, gurus, shamen you’ve gone to for healing over the years may all have been talented, gifted professionals, or healers, but the hidden, unacknowledged secret sauce of their treatments has been you. Your belief in their skill, or caring has as much as 60% influence of your positive outcome.
When I was a kid and Disneyland was new, there was section called Tomorrowland where we were told that in the future, we’d all have flying cars and jetpacks. Our dreams were big. Movies, books, TV shows saw a future of space travel and a bright positive reality. But what happens when we give up our power is our dreams become small and fearful as well. So instead of flying cars we got cell phones. No one in in 1960 would have gone to a movie where the most magical future invention was a personal telephone. And what is our vision of the future today. Every TV show, movie, Netflix binge shows of the future are all about a dystopian world of ghouls and walking dead on one hand, while we look for an Avenger so save us on the other. The world we see today is no accident. We have imagined/feared it into being. That’s how powerful we are.
And yet it’s not too late. We can still change that. We are all like Neo in the Matrix. We are all the chosen ones. No one else is coming. We are our own hero. We can take back the power that once was ours. That’s the real magic. As Howard Zinn writes: The power of the hunter depends on the obedience of the rabbits. Its time to our power back. And it starts with our individual personal power to heal ourselves.
In my own case, eight years ago, after years of trips to the ER for Atrial fib, hypertension and panic attacks I watched a team of doctors literally scratch their heads. It finally hit me. They don’t’ know what else to do. It was frightening and liberating. They can’t even manage my symptoms anymore. I felt empowered. I’ll take it from here, I thought. And I did. I changed a variety of things. The first was a radical change in my diet. Something the doctors never even mentioned. Many MDs admit to taking a single 6-12 hr course in nutrition in their entire medical training. I doubled down on my MFR treatments from 2 of the best therapists I could find. Began a daily exercise regimen including meditation, and made a decision to give up my soul killing job and become a therapist myself. On the treatment table I was finally able to feel and let of years of buried pain I’d been gripping in a choke hold. No wonder my BP was soaring. Today, I feel younger, more alive today than in the last 10 years. All those symptoms are gone, including 35 years of hypertension. Here’s my secret:
An unexpected benefit of the pandemic was having to do all therapies on-line for almost 2 years. I’ve had some incredible physical and emotional breakthroughs, and no one physically touched me. Like you, I believed it was only the skill and power of my therapists. They did the magic. And it began to dawn on me. Could it be me? Has it been me all along? Yes, I’ve guidance but I am doing the work. It starts by coming back to the body. If your meds or therapies are not doing that, they’re doing the opposite. Numbing you out for while so you don’t have to feel your body. What I found is, whatever I’m afraid to feel or experience is always worse in my mind. Because the mind is ruled by fear. I choose to believe even Christ’s message was this. Don’t fight the pain. Be with it, surrender to it completely, and you will be resurrected. When I return to the body by easing the restrictions that grip it in fear, I can relax, breathe again, and find there’s more room inside. I don’t need to escape. I can come home again. That’s what infant me knew from the start. I’m connected to everything. I don’t have to physically leave to connect to others, but come back home where I’m with everyone. You can too. You have the magic.
