Do you find yourself saying, I need to be symptom-free by such and such a date? Or perhaps maybe I should find one more thing I could do to speed this healing along. This kind of inner language is more common than you might think, and it reveals a deeper story, one that is likely rooted in force. In today's episode, we're going to dive into the five signs that you're forcing your healing and most importantly, why you need to stop doing it. Hey there, I'm Jenny Peterson, and welcome to today's episode of the Rebellious Healer, the podcast where we ditch the fear, decode the symptoms, and take healing into our own hands. Let's get started. Today I woke up and I immediately felt like crap. It's the same feeling as I had yesterday. Heavy, strained, and just out of sync. I just can't shake this. What am I doing wrong? I'm doing so much. Supplements, meditations, a different diet, trying something different all the time, and still I feel stuck. I don't know why it's not working. Why can't I just feel normal again? I've been at this for so long, and the results are just not coming fast enough. Today I spent most of the day Googling different healing methods, looking for something new, something I've missed. Maybe there's another supplement, another technique that will maybe finally make a difference. I don't know. I keep telling myself, I'll be better by the end of this year. That's my deadline. I can't imagine still feeling like this by then. It's been exhausting, but I can't stop. I need to feel better and fast. I also feel this overwhelming guilt. Like I'm not doing enough. I know I could be doing more, pushing harder, and I'm already so focused on this, yet there's this constant voice in my head telling me I'm not doing enough. If I just try one more thing, maybe I'll see progress. I don't know how much longer I can keep going like this, though. It's hard to trust that this will work. I don't want to give up. I just want my life back. This is a journal entry I wrote many moons ago when I was deep in my healing journey. Yes, I still have these entries because I love looking back to see how far I've come. At the time, I was desperate to heal. I would have done anything just to feel normal again. And I pretty much did try anything just to feel normal again. But what I didn't realize was that I was also very stuck and stressed out because I was trying to force my healing. I didn't know that's what I was doing, and I just thought that was the way that you heal. Then one day, I just couldn't take it anymore. I was so tired of forcing it that I decided to stop and surrender. That decision changed everything. I've talked to a lot of people over the last seven years, and a majority of them, when they come to me, are in the same boat, forcing their healing without realizing it. And one way I can determine that is based on a couple things that people will say. They'll say, by the end of your program, can I expect to be symptom-free? Or how quick can I expect to see results? Those questions are telling me that there is force. But the truth is, a person asking those questions doesn't realize and know that they're forcing it. It's almost like a default setting when we're desperate for results. We push, we strive, and we think that if we do more, we'll finally find the magic solution. But the truth is, forcing it isn't the answer. Now let's dive into the five signs that you're forcing your healing. These signs are key indicators that despite your best intentions, you might be caught in a cycle of pushing too hard too fast. And trust me, you're not alone in this. I've seen it time and time again, not just in my own healing journey, but in the many conversations I've had with people on their healing path and often even with our students. So let's walk through these signs and see if they resonate with you. Number one, obsessive symptom checking. If you find yourself constantly monitoring how your body feels, checking in every hour or day, looking for any sign of progress or regression, you're likely forcing it. Maybe you're in front of the mirror every morning, hoping that the rash, the pain, or whatever it is will have disappeared. Or perhaps you're reaching out to your phone for good old Mr. Google for every little sensation, trying to determine what it means. The next sign is constantly looking for the next fix or doing multiple protocols at once. This one hits hard for so many. If you're always on the hunt for the next supplement, diet, or healing protocol, you're caught in the trap of if I just do more, I'll get better. One day it's a new supplement regimen, the next day you're signing up for the latest somatic healing course. You might even be in a Facebook group or a forum researching all the protocols others have tried. Anything that promises a quick fix to your symptoms. You may be doing many protocols at one time, thinking more is better, trying to kill multiple birds with one stone, listening to a meditation while doing somatic exercises while humming and holding your homeopathic in your mouth. All of that at one time, all because you think doing more will get you there faster. The third sign is feeling overwhelmed by shoulds and guilt. You know that feeling, right? The one where you're constantly falling short of your own expectations. There's a never-ending list of things you think you should be doing. You should be eating a certain way, meditating every morning, doing specific exercises or rituals. And if you miss one, you feel like you failed. The fourth sign is having a deadline for when you need to feel better. You might tell yourself, I need to be symptom-free by the end of this year, or I can't keep living like this. I need to heal by next month. The fifth sign is pushing through your pain, discomfort, or fear of relaxing and letting go. This sign is often a mix of two things: pushing through discomfort in your healing process and being afraid to rest or take a step back. You might feel like you have to keep going, keep trying. Even when you're in pain or exhaustion, there's this belief that if you stop pushing through, you'll fall behind or waste time. On the other hand, the thought of relaxing or taking a break might seem terrifying. What if resting means you're giving up? What if you miss an opportunity to heal faster? Can you recognize yourself in any of these? As you know, awareness is the first step. So let's talk about how we're programmed to force healing. Every day, we are bombarded with messages that promise faster healing. Take this, try this protocol to speed things up. But this mindset comes from a misunderstanding of what healing actually looks like. We've been taught to view symptoms as the problem, something that needs to be fixed immediately. But symptoms are part of the healing process, like the swelling and pain that happen when you get a cut. That's your body doing its job to heal. The issue is we think healing should be quick and perfect. We're taught that if we're not seeing immediate results, something's wrong. But healing isn't linear. It's messy, uncomfortable, and it takes time. Symptoms are often signs that the body is repairing, not that something's broken. Instead of pushing for quick fixes, we need to trust the process and allow our bodies the space to heal naturally. Just like a tree growing in the wind. It may be uncomfortable, but it's still growing. This rush to fix symptoms is rooted in the belief that healing should be pain-free and fast. But forcing it only disrupts your body's natural rhythm. Healing happens when we stop forcing and start listening to our bodies. And healing isn't about eliminating symptoms right away. It's about trusting your body, allowing space for repair, and surrendering to the process. Symptoms do not mean that you're failing. They mean your body is working. Now that we've identified the signs that you're forcing your healing, it's time to dive into why forcing your healing isn't actually helping and how it can keep you stuck. You see, it might seem logical to push harder, do more, or set rigid deadlines for when you want to feel better. After all, we're taught that healing is about effort, right? The more effort you put in, the faster you'll see results. But here's the truth: pushing harder is actually one of the biggest obstacles to healing. The first reason pushing doesn't work is because it keeps your body in a state of stress. When you're forcing your healing, you're living in constant anticipation, fear, and urgency. This sets off your fight or flight response, your body's survival mode. When you're in this state, your body isn't focused on healing. It's focused on survival. It's not in a relaxed, restorative state where healing can naturally happen. Instead, your body is on high alert, responding to stress, trying to keep you safe. This means the more you push, the more you're sending signals to your body that it's in danger. And when you're in fight or flight state, your body can't repair, regenerate, or even properly digest. It can't focus on healing because it's stuck in survival mode. Healing happens when you're in a calm, relaxed state. Pushing doesn't give your body the chance to enter that state and do the work that it needs to do. The second reason forcing your healing is counterproductive is that it comes from a place of resistance. When you're forcing something, you're resisting the present moment. You're resisting how your body feels right now, you're resisting the healing process itself. This resistance sends a message to your body that things aren't okay as they are. You feel like you're not enough, that your symptoms are something to fear, and that you need to fix them. But here's the thing: resistance breeds more resistance. The more you resist your symptoms or where you are in the process, the more your body will fight back. True healing happens when you let go of resistance, when you stop fighting your symptoms and instead embrace them as part of the process. It's about meeting yourself where you are, trusting that your body is already doing the healing work and getting out of the way. The more you push, the more you're telling your body, I don't trust you, which only makes things harder. Another reason why pushing your healing isn't helping is that healing takes time. There are no shortcuts, no quick fixes. I know it can be frustrating, especially when you're in pain or feeling stuck, but true healing is a process. It's not linear and it doesn't happen on a set timeline. When you're forcing things, you're trying to rush the process, which ends up sabotaging your healing. You're not giving your body the space it needs to respond. In fact, trying to speed things up usually just leads to burnout, overwhelm, and even more symptoms. It's like trying to force a plant to grow faster by pulling on the stem. You're not helping it grow. You're damaging it. Healing happens at the pace that's right for you. The more you try to control it, the more you disrupt the natural flow. Trust that your body is working on its own time and honor that process. You are not in control of how long it takes your body to heal. Your only job is to provide the environment to allow it to do it. Your body will heal when the mind is at peace. Finally, forcing your healing means you're not fully trusting your body's wisdom. Your body knows how to heal. It's been doing it for millions of years. But when you're forcing things, you're telling your body that you don't trust it to do its job. You may feel like you need to control everything, take the right supplements, follow the latest diet, meditate for hours, try the next mind-body technique. And while these things may be helpful, they are not the key to healing. The key to healing is trust. Trust in your body, trust in the process, and trust that the answers are already inside of you. When you trust your body, you give it the space to do its work. You can take action, yes, but it's about action that's grounded in trust, not fear. Forcing your healing is a sign of fear, not trust. Your body knows how to heal, and until your mind is at peace, it won't be able to fully focus on that. And the last piece to understand is the role of rest. When you're pushing and forcing, you're often too busy doing things to give your body time to rest and recover. But rest is critical to healing. Healing doesn't just happen when you're doing. Sometimes it happens when you're doing nothing. True healing comes when you give yourself permission to pause. It's about allowing your body the space it needs to regenerate. Rest and relaxation send the message to your body that it's safe. And when your body feels safe, it can finally let go and heal. Now that I've talked about why forcing your healing isn't helping, let's shift the focus to surrendering. Surrender is often seen as a passive act, but in the context of healing, it's actually one of the most powerful things you can do. I know it might sound counterintuitive, especially when you're so used to pushing and trying harder, but let me be clear. Surrendering doesn't mean giving up, it means letting go of the need to control every detail of your healing journey and allowing things to unfold in their own time. First, it's important to understand that surrender is not giving up. I've heard many people say, but if I stop trying so hard, I'll just give up and never heal. And I get it, it feels risky to step away from that constant effort. But the truth is, surrender is actually an act of trust. Trust in your body, trust in your healing process, and trust that your body knows what it needs. When you stop forcing, you're not abandoning your healing. Instead, you're saying, I trust that my body knows how to heal, and I'm going to step back and let it do its work. The first practical tip for surrendering is creating space for your body to heal. I know it sounds simple, but it's critical. When you're constantly doing, going, and trying new things, you're not leaving room for your body to actually relax and repair. This might mean taking a break from the constant symptom checking or cutting back on trying new healing methods. Instead, focus on rest and relaxation. Allow yourself moments in the day where you're not focusing on healing or pushing yourself to get better. Ask yourself, when was the last time you truly rested without guilt? When was the last time you allowed your body to just be without needing to do anything? Creating space could also mean disconnecting from external sources of stress, like social media, advice overload, or even toxic relationships. Healing requires peace, and that starts with creating an environment where your body can feel safe. The next tip is to shift from control to alignment. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that if we don't control everything, nothing will happen. But the reality is true healing comes when you align with your body, not when you try to control it. Instead of forcing healing with more action, try focus on alignment. This means tuning into what feels right for you, not what others say you should or shouldn't do. This is where self-awareness comes in. Ask yourself, what does your body need right now? Is it more rest? Is it time to slow down? Or maybe it's time to get outside and get some fresh air? Trust that your body will guide you when you stop trying to control it. Another powerful tool for surrender is to practice trust and gratitude every single day. It might sound small, but these daily practices can make a huge difference in your healing. Start by reminding yourself that you're not in this alone. Your body is working hard behind the scenes, even when you're not aware of it. Begin each day by taking a moment to thank your body for everything it's already done for you. This could be as simple as thanking your heart for beating, your lungs for breathing, or your digestive system for processing your food. Acknowledge the healing that's already happening, even if it doesn't feel like much right now. When you practice gratitude, you shift your energy from lack to abundance. You're no longer focused on what's wrong with you. Instead, you start appreciating the body you have and the healing it's already doing. Finally, you need to let go of rigid timelines and expectations. I know it's tempting to set a deadline for when you should feel better, but healing doesn't work that way. Your body heals at its own pace. And sometimes that pace is slower than we want it to be. Well, most of the time that is the case. Instead of setting a specific deadline, focus on being present in the process. Trust that your body is doing exactly what it needs to do, even if it doesn't look like what you expected. The more you focus on the present moment, the less stressed you'll feel about the future. Ask yourself, what can I do today to honor my body? How can I show up for myself without the pressure of needing everything to be perfect? Surrendering to the healing process isn't about giving up. It's about creating space for your body to do what it's naturally designed to do. It's about trusting yourself, aligning with your body, and letting go of the constant need for control. When you surrender, you stop fighting against yourself. You stop pushing. And in that space of trust, you give your body the space it needs to heal. Remember, healing is a process, and when you let go of the need to rush or control it, you open up to the possibility of true lasting transformation. So let's recap what we've covered today. If you find yourself obsessively checking your symptoms, constantly looking for the next fix, working on multiple protocols, feeling overwhelmed by shoulds, setting rigid deadlines for healing, or pushing through discomfort, you might be forcing your healing journey. These are signs often rooted in a deeper lack of trust in your body and the process. Healing is not about doing more or pushing harder. It's about surrendering. It's about creating space for your body to do its work, trusting the process and letting go of control. When you stop forcing your healing, you allow your body the peace and space it needs to truly heal. If any of these signs resonate with you, I encourage you to take a moment today to truly surrender. Remember, healing happens in trust, not in force. Take a deep breath, surrender, and trust your body. It knows the way.
