Up Your Total Glow
Up Your Total Glow is for high-functioning people who look like they have it all together but feel disconnected, depleted or no longer themselves underneath it all.
If your body feels off, your energy isn’t holding, or what used to work no longer does… this is where we go deeper.
This podcast goes beyond surface-level wellness, routines or “fixing” symptoms.
It’s about understanding what your body is actually communicating — and learning how to respond in a way that restores real energy, stability and vitality.
Through a deeply personalised, body-led approach grounded in nervous system work and Ayurvedic wisdom, Ruth Balsiger guides you back into connection with your body, your energy and your natural rhythm.
Inside, you’ll explore:
• why your energy drops — even when you’re doing everything “right”
• how to shift out of survival mode without forcing or overriding yourself
• what your body truly needs to feel safe, supported, and steady again
• how to rebuild vitality in a way that is sustainable and deeply personal
This is not about discipline, restriction or pushing through.
It’s about working with your body instead of against it.
Because when your body feels supported, everything changes — your energy, your clarity, your capacity, and how you experience your life.

Hello my beautiful friends and welcome back to Up Your Total Glow. I'm so happy that you are here with me today. Thank you for making the time. And today I would like to talk about something that I see so very often. And maybe you know the following thought. I am eating so well, so why don't I feel better? You're choosing nourishing foods and you're making beautiful, healthy, conscious decisions, and you're doing what you believe is good for your body. And yet something still feels a little off. Your energy isn't quite where you want it to be, your digestion feels inconsistent, or you just don't feel as nourished as you expected you would. And if that resonates, this episode is going to gently shift the way you see food and yourself. And here is what I've learned, both through Ayurveda and definitely through my own life. The way you eat is deeply connected to the way you relate to yourself. So let that sink. So the way you eat, the way you consume food is connected to the way you are in relationship with yourself. These are not separate. They never are. And very often our relationship with food becomes a mirror. It becomes a reflection of how safe we feel in our body or how much we trust ourselves and how much we allow ourselves to actually receive. And this is something that I know not just professionally but on a very personal level. So after my near-death experience in my mid-teens, I started to see my body totally differently. I had this deep, deep appreciation for how incredibly intelligent and how magical and how resilient it truly is. But and this is super important, while I had that awareness, I hadn't yet healed what was underneath. And underneath there was so much self-doubt and so many insecurities and a deep feeling of not being enough. So I chose to stay on the surface level. I focused on what felt safe to control. And then I stumbled into the modeling world in my early twenties, and that, my friend, changed everything. Because suddenly all those unhealed parts of me were right there in my face, amplified, super visible, super loud, and there was nowhere to hide from them anymore. And no, that wasn't easy at all. But looking back now, it was another super beautiful gift to me because that is what allowed me again to expand and to transform. Because it brought everything to the surface that was ready to be seen and to be healed. And of course, this also showed up in my relationship with food. So I tried to control what I thought I could control. Yes, very pitter. So I ate very in a very structured way, very disciplined, and very restrictive for me looking back. Well, incredibly restrictive, actually. And underneath of all of that, of course, there was also so much water. There was so much overthinking and an incredible disconnection. Disconnection felt so much safer to me at that time. And even though from the outside, maybe I still looked healthy, and maybe the foods that I was eating when I wasn't restricting looked healthy. But inside of me, I everything felt tight, way too tight, and I felt that huge disconnection, and I felt that I wasn't truly nourished. And today it's very clear to me why that was the case. Because nourishment never comes from control, it always and only can come from connection. And this brings me to the Ayurvedic perspective, because Ayurveda, as per usual, explains this so beautifully. Digestion isn't just physical, and I know you've heard me saying this before, and you will hear me saying it again because it is so important. Digestion is also emotional and mental and energetic. And true nourishment can only happen when your system feels safe enough to receive that nourishment. So when someone tells me today, I'm eating really well, but I don't feel good. I don't just look at the food. I look at the experience around it because what often blocks absorption is when we are eating while we are stressed or while we are distracted, when we are rushing through our mirrors, when we are being in our heads instead of our bodies, when we are trying to eat perfectly and do everything right, when we are trying to subtly or not so subtly control rather than nourish. And again, and this is really important for me to say and for you to understand, this is not something to judge. Instead, I'm gently inviting you here to become aware of this because in awareness there is true power and empowerment. This is where transformation can start. Let's call her Sue, and she was a beautiful client of mine. Actually, all of my clients are incredible, and the thing is she was doing everything right. She cooked beautiful meals for herself, and those meals were very nourishing, and she put so much effort in it, and still she came to me because after her meals she didn't feel right, her digestion wasn't right, and her energy was anything but good. And when we explored what was going on in a very gentle way, it became very clear that she wasn't actually with her food. So she was always eating while she was planning ahead or thinking of her next meeting and responding. She was always slightly tense, or sometimes even more than slightly tense, and rushed when she was eating, you have to know. So has a very high performance profession. So very, very pitter and yes, also with a huge touch of water, all the multitasking. So what we started off with wasn't changing anything in her diet, nothing. What we changed was her experience. So I invited her to slow things right down. I invited her to come back into her body to actually really feel and connect again. And we created small moments of being present. And I can't remember fully, but I think it was about four weeks, and her digestion started to soften and her energy stabilized. And she said, I feel like my body is finally receiving what I'm giving it. And yes, she made it. That's exactly what happened. So I would like to offer you something to reflect on. When you eat, are you trying to control your body or are you actually in relationship with it? Because that shift changes everything. So feel into that and notice what comes up. And of course, I would like to give you a few simple ways to support your digestion without making this complicated or overwhelming. So think of the following as anchors, not as rules. And as your anchor number one, I'm inviting you to sit down with your meal and allow yourself to actually arrive. And even just pausing for one breath before you start to eat can change everything because it signals safety to your body, to your nervous system. And anger too, I invite you to eat in a relatively calm state. And yes, I'm completely aware of the fact that you can't always just wish yourself into the perfect magic moment of calm, and that you might have rushed your entire morning. So this is not about being perfect, it's just about reminding yourself to be a little bit less rushed and a little bit more present, and do whatever it takes for you to get there. Okay, anchor number three. Let your body register your food. How do you do that? Actually, use your five senses. So look at it. How does your food look like? What colors does it have? And then smell it, and of course, truly taste it. So try to tune into all the different tastes and textures. And if you can, and if it feels right for you, maybe even touch it. And all of this will activate your digestion before it even begins, and it will make your digestion so much more powerful during your meal as well. And then anchor number four, keep it simple when needed. So if your system feels already off or fragile, please gift yourself warm and easy to digest meals. I love simplicity, especially when digestion is low, because it works. So what do I mean with easy to digest meals? Think of meshy foods, think of soups, think of warm casseroles with not too many ingredients, up to three max. Okay, and then number five, your anchor number five, and this is my absolute favorite. Trust your body more than external rules. Because your body gives you feedback all the time. The question is: are you listening or are you constantly overriding and ignoring? That's it. So I hope that these five anchors feel empowering and not overwhelming. And before we close, I would like to bring this into your body for a moment. So if you can gently close your eyes, please don't close your eyes if you're driving. And then take a slow, gentle breath in and a soft breath out. And as you do, let your shoulders soften and your jaw relax. And maybe place one hand on your belly. And truly feel your body. Feel the warmth. Feel your breath. Feel the rhythm of your beautiful body. Your body is not something to control. It's something to be in relationship with. And quietly say to yourself, and maybe use your own words here. I allow myself to receive nourishment. Not just from food, but from life. And then take one more breath in and out and gently come back. My beautiful friend, healthy eating is not just about food. It is about connection. It is about trust. And it is about the relationship that you have with yourself. Because your body already knows how to nourish you. And when you stop controlling and start listening, everything begins to shift. And if you'd like to understand your body on a deeper level, you can take my free Ayurvedic imbalance quiz.
