Battling the Shadows: P#2 Solutions for Depression and Negative Thoughts
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Have you ever noticed how your thoughts can dramatically affect your emotions and actions? There's profound truth in the biblical wisdom "For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7) – a principle now validated by modern psychological research.
When negative thought patterns take hold, they create what therapists call "cognitive distortions" or what I like to call "stinking thinking." These distorted thought patterns can fuel depression, anxiety, and a host of other mental health challenges. The good news? You don't have to remain captive to these harmful thoughts. By recognizing these patterns and applying biblical principles, you can experience remarkable transformation in your mindset and emotional well-being.
In this episode, I walk through the top ten cognitive distortions that commonly plague our thinking, from all-or-nothing thinking and overgeneralization to emotional reasoning and personalization. I pair each distortion with powerful Scripture that offers a pathway to renewed thinking. We explore how Romans 12:2 calls us to be "transformed by the renewing of your mind," and how 2 Corinthians 10:5 encourages us to "take every thought captive." These aren't just spiritual platitudes but practical tools for mental health.
Remember, your past pain doesn't have to dictate your future. As I often tell my clients, "Do not let your pain become your idol." Instead, let God use that pain as a launching point for a meaningful, purposeful life. Whether you're personally struggling with depression or supporting someone who is, this episode offers both compassionate understanding and practical strategies for moving forward. For additional resources, check out my book, "Getting a Grip on Depression," available on my website. Remember – you are fearfully and wonderfully made, valued, and loved by the God who created you.

Introduction to Stinking Thinking
Speaker 1Resilient Solutions Shortcast, episode 69, christians in Depression Part 2, understanding Stinking Thinking and Cognitive Distortions. Did you know that your thought life can influence how you feel and how you act? That's right, even in Proverbs 23, 7, the Bible says For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. Hello, my name is John Thurman and thank you for joining me today. For Christians in Depression Part Two how to change from stinking thinking and cognitive distortions to a mindset and clear thinking that will help you feel better, feel more victorious and help you overcome depression. My name is John Thurman and you're listening to my podcast, john Thurman's Resilient Solutions Shortcast, where I help you become more resilient in your personal life, your relationships and in your faith. Let's jump right in today. Thanks for joining me. Hey, john Thurman here, and thanks for joining me today. I'm really excited about today's segment because we're going deeper and deeper into how Christians can push back depression, anxiety and a whole host of things that bug us, simply by learning to be aware of our thought life and finding and using some biblical principles to deal with them. As I mentioned in the beginning, proverbs 23, 7 says For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. Pretty much that's truth. Cognitive behavioral therapy research pretty much all research with mental health issues validates this very point that our thought life determines how we act, how we feel and, to a degree, how successful we are in life and how well we negotiate challenges and things like that.
Speaker 1Today I want to focus on stinking thinking or cognitive distortions. In this time we'll identify what they are. We'll identify the top 10. Then I'll give you some biblical input and solutions and things you can do to begin to change your thought life. Let's jump right in today.
Speaker 1Stinking thinking can cloud your mind and lead to negative emotions like anxiety, anger and depression. Without consciously changing our mindset and our thought life, we'll fall into an automatic impulsive patterns that often misrepresent reality. It's really true. If you think about it, when you're thinking of those nasty, negative, stinking thinking thoughts, it really impacts how you feel and how you respond to the world around you. And if you've dealt with really unusual stress in your life or trauma, maybe a bad childhood, a lot of voices in modern culture want you to pick that scab and live in the past, live enslaved to that old trauma, that old hurt and that old pain. But you don't have to, however, your past does not have to dictate your future. By combining your personal efforts with biblical principles, you can transform those bad things, that negative, stinking thinking, into positive, life-changing thoughts and outcomes. You literally can turn your life around, with the Lord's help, by changing your thinking to a more biblical model.
Speaker 1The scripture gives us so many great ways to change your thinking and in today's session I will give you the top 10 cognitive distortions that cognitive behavioral therapy has discovered. These are so important because, once again, I believe that cognitive behavioral therapy really correlates a lot with scripture and that most of our mental health issues, apart from some of the biological components, are really enhanced by our thinking patterns. And today we'll identify the top 10 stinking thinking patterns and I'll give you some biblical truth that you can use to help bend, mold and shape those to where you can have a more productive future and a more rewarding life. Let's jump right in. I remember years ago one of my counseling professors said the biggest thing we can give someone in our first few sessions is a dose of hope. And I'm going to give you some hope today.
Speaker 1How you think significantly impacts how you feel. Understanding stinking thinking or cognitive distortions can be a little tricky. It's kind to give you some hope today. How you think significantly impacts how you feel. Understanding stinking thinking or cognitive distortions can be a little tricky. It's kind of like untangling a big ball of yarn.
Speaker 1Depression goes beyond a simple sadness. It encompasses various mental and physical symptoms that many times make you feel slowed down and trapped. A key aspect of this experience is the whole idea of stinking thinking. So where do these thoughts come from? Well, researchers believe that cognitive distortions are sometimes, but not always, the result of stress, negative life events or gradual, smaller events, such as negative expressions from parents, teachers, preachers, caregivers. There's a whole host of things that can happen, and a lot of it is also internal, kind of our hardwiring. These harmful thoughts, though, can be relentless and damaging. They can impact our self-esteem, our productivity, making the path to healing seem impossible.
Speaker 1The encouraging news is that you and I are not alone in this struggle. The Bible offers comforting insights, great training and instructions reminding us of our worth in God's eyes. Even when negativity clouds our minds, it feels like having a personal encourager standing right by you. That's one of the things I love about this scripture. As a believer, we've got the Holy Spirit in us. We're not in this alone. We've got the Word, we've got the Holy Spirit and we've got Christian friends and church that can help us. But if you're grappling with those negative thoughts, remember that recognizing them is the first step towards joy. As you and I learn to understand the Scriptures and how the Scriptures want to help us reprogram our minds, help us become more focused in thinking good thoughts and honest thoughts rather than the dismal stuff that's defeating and denying it really gives us a chance to move forward. As you and I learn to let the scripture and the Holy Spirit guide us through these tough times, we'll see brighter days ahead.
How Thoughts Affect Feelings and Actions
Speaker 1And remember it's perfectly okay along this journey to laugh at yourself. I know when I was going through my own period of darkness, there was some PTSD and depression as I began to dig into my own thought life. There were honestly some days I had some great laughs because as I got more and more in my right brain I'm like, oh my gosh, thurman, that's kind of stupid and idiotic in a fun way. So hopefully, as you work through this, you'll be able to go back and see some times where you were just really messed up but you can smile at it because God brought you through that Now really messed up, but you can smile at it because God brought you through that.
Speaker 1Now what we want to do next is I want to do a quick review of the top 10 cognitive distortions. You can learn more about some of the show notes. I've got some links to some other articles can help you understand this. But just real quickly, let me run through these 10.
Speaker 1First of all, all or nothing thinking. This mindset sees situations as either positive or negative. It's either something that's not perfect, it's a complete failure. For instance, you make a small mistake at work and you feel like your entire day is ruined, that the boss is going to call you in and you'll probably lose your job. Number two overgeneralization. This means drawing broad conclusions from a single event. Touch is believing that one failure in your life might lead to eternal doom and separation from God and all things good. Number three mental filtering Concentrating solely on the negatives while overlooking the positives.
Speaker 1Several years ago, I was attending a speech class with a precious, precious mentor of mine who's going to be with Jesus, ms Florence Littauer. The task was I've been given 20 minutes to write a five-minute speech and I had to come up with something pretty quick. I was thinking about driving In my car. I have three mirrors there's a rearview mirror, a right side and a left side mirror. Those mirrors are designed for your personal safety and the safety of those people in your car. It helps you know where you've come from, what's coming up on you, and it keeps you oriented to the front of your vehicle as well as the right, left and the rear.
Speaker 1One of the problems I see with human behavior many times is we spend so much time only looking in the rear view mirror. Maybe a past trauma, a big hairy event, some type of sadness, a breakup or whatever, and we focus on it too much. And if you're driving your car and you're only looking in the rearview mirror, someone's going to get hurt and someone's going to die. So it's important that we don't stay focused on the negative. Here's a warning for you Do not let your pain become your idol. If you do, it'll ruin your life. Instead, let God use that pain as a launching point to a meaningful, purposeful life, not just for yourself, but also as a hope and encouragement for others. Well, let's get moving.
Speaker 1Number four discounting the positive. This means dismissing. A positive experience is unimportant for arbitrary reasons. Number five jumping to conclusions. Boy, this is one I have to work on. Is that assuming the worst without evidence, such as believing you can read another person's mind? You know what Jumping conclusions is something a lot of us do. We get a cue from someone, a verbal or nonverbal cue, and think, oh, I know exactly what they're thinking. Well, you may or may not. Number six magnification or minimization. This means exaggerating problems while downplaying strengths and successes. Number seven emotional reasoning. This means assuming negative feelings reflect reality, such as thinking I feel bad, so everything is bad. And if you're depressed, this is one of those tapes that's real easy to run over and over and over.
Speaker 1Number eight should statements Imposing harsh expectations on yourself and others. I love this quote from Martin Luther, the German reformer. It appeared in the introduction to his German translation of the New Testament book of Galatians. In the Latin phrase, he says homo simul, justus et peccator, man is at the same time saint and sinner. And isn't that the truth? We know what we should do, but we don't do it. That's what Romans 7 and 8 is all about. Number eight is labeling and mislabeling. This is simply using unfair terms to define yourself or others, rather than simply describing behaviors and events. We tend to do it. It tends to add a lot of drama to the story.
Top 10 Cognitive Distortions Explained
Speaker 1Number 10, this is a huge one personalization and blame. That means taking responsibility for things beyond your control or unfairly blaming others for your problems. Now, I know this can be challenging because our culture wants to blame others. We can go back to Genesis, the first book of the Bible, and we see it starting there when God asked Adam who messed up? And Adam immediately pushes blame to Eve. He says the woman you gave me, she made me do this. I want you to go a little bit deeper with me. Go to my blog or check my show notes and you can read more about these.
Speaker 1These are the top 10 cognitive distortions or stinking thinking patterns we have. I believe it's important that we know them and understand them, not to beat ourselves up with them, but to use them as an understanding and a launch pad to move into changing the way we think. And I believe the Bible is one of the best tools we. It provides us wisdom and comfort. It helps us reframe these cognitive distortions by exposing it to truth. It helps us see how God thinks about us and how much he loves us. I'm going to go over just a few verses here that can help you, and if you find yourself struggling with some of these distortions, let me promise you, as a believer, the Holy Spirit is in you to help you, but you have to put the work in.
Biblical Solutions for Thought Transformation
Speaker 1Let me go over a few principles here real quick. First of all, the biblical principle of renewing your mind, romans 12.2 states. This verse really emphasizes the importance of challenging those negative, stinking thinking patterns and seeking transformation through God's word. The idea there is we have to actively participate. When you notice a negative thought, pause and ask yourself is this based on facts or feelings? If it's based on feelings, make sure they're feelings that are reframed from a more balanced perspective of what the scripture teaches reframed from a more balanced perspective of what the Scripture teaches. The second thing the Scripture tells us to do and this is in 2 Corinthians 10, 5, encourages us to take every thought captive to obey Christ Jesus. This verse suggests that we actively have to challenge and correct our distorted thinking patterns. It doesn't mean we just lay there and wait for Jesus to lay it on us. It means we have to actively engage in studying the Word, challenging our thoughts, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, through prayer and Bible study, to make these changes.
Speaker 1The next principle I want to give you is God's peace. I love this verse so much and I speak about it in some other blogs and things I've written. But Philippians 4, 6, and 7 says Don't worry about anything. Instead, pray about everything. Now, if you want to get the whole story there, it's Philippians 4, 6 through 8. And it says that when we don't worry about things and we pray about things, he will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. If you read the rest of that passage verse 8, it says that we have to do some work too, that we have to choose to think on things that are good, pure, noble, honorable. This scripture reminds us that you and I have an active part in our own healing and our own journey as we learn to engage our thought, life, trust the Lord to help change it and actively pursue ways to re-engage biblical truth that will act like an anti-victim to the poisonous, negative, stinking thinking that we have.
Speaker 1The next verse is one that's really been a standby for me for years, and that is that God wants to give us strength in our weakness. Matter of fact, he operates best in our weakness. 2 Corinthians 12 9 says my grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness. This verse reminds me that even in my strength, I'm not really too good, if you know what I mean. The good news is in our brokenness, in our pain. God wants to manifest his power, grace and glory, so let me encourage you to think about that one.
Finding Hope and Healing in God's Word
Speaker 1The final little segment I want to give you to think about is value and worth. Psalm 139.14 says thank you for making me so wonderfully complex. Your workmanship is marvelous. How well I know it. This scripture can really help us get out of our stinking thinking of low self-esteem. Or I heard one person say one time well, I'm a Christian, but I feel so bad I think I'm a wart on the body of Christ. Folks, that's not how God sees you. Now, this is not some type of puffed up, egocentric weird stuff. This is the fact that God knows you, and not only does he know you, he loves you. We just finished celebrating Easter, which is all about Christ loving us so much, god loving us so much that he sent Jesus to die for you and me. So you can rest in the fact that God loves you and sees great value and worth in you, not because of what you've done, but because Jesus has done and he sees you that you are fearfully and wonderfully made and I want to challenge you to embrace that, even if you're struggling with depression. Let me wrap up here today.
Speaker 1While depression can cloud your thoughts and perceptions, being able to recognize stinking thinking and cognitive distortion patterns is crucial for healing. Incorporating biblical principles offers a way to reframe those thought patterns with God's truth and grace. Faith can bring hope, joy and strength, but it's essential that you and I take responsibility for our thought life. Now you may be saying, okay, john, that sounds good, but I feel so stuck. Well, there's always help. You can reach out to me through the website. Hopefully you've got some friends you can talk to, maybe a mentor, a minister, mental health professional, being plugged into a church that teaches the Bible and talks about God's love and grace and mercy, but also talks about consequences for living a crazy, weird life. Those things can help you.
Final Encouragement and Resources
Speaker 1If you or someone you know is feeling depressed and you feel like you're slipping, you need to get help and I'm encouraging you to do that today. It's okay to feel down. It's okay to feel depressed. Feeling depressed and having depression is kind of normal in America, but it's crucial to understand that you are not alone, that you and I can emerge from these shadows into a light of hope, confidence and purpose Not in ourselves, but what God is doing in my life. Thank you so much for listening today. I hope and pray the Lord will bless you and that you'll be able to take some of the truth in this little podcast and apply it to your life.
