Making Bold Decisions in Uncertain Times
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Feeling stuck at life's crossroads? You're not alone. In this empowering episode, we tackle that all-too-familiar feeling when following God's plan feels like assembling IKEA furniture without instructions—confusing and frustrating.
Decisiveness isn't just for naturally confident people; it's a skill you can develop through faith. I share how understanding faith as confidence in God's sovereignty transforms your decision-making from anxious second-guessing to purposeful action. When you build your life on this foundation, you'll stand strong even when storms come—like those that devastated my childhood vacation spot in Mexico Beach, Florida, which has since been rebuilt stronger than before.
We explore three powerful biblical examples—Noah building an ark amid ridicule, Abraham leaving everything familiar behind, and Esther risking her life to save her people. None were perfect, but all acted boldly when it mattered. Their stories reveal that faith-based decisiveness isn't about having all the answers; it's about trusting the One who does. I offer four practical steps to strengthen your decision-making muscles: persistent prayer (your divine guidance system), regular scripture reading (spiritual nourishment), seeking godly counsel (external perspective), and reflecting on God's past faithfulness (building confidence for present challenges). Through these practices, you'll discover that even when the path isn't completely clear, you can move forward with courage, knowing God is working everything—even the difficult situations—for your good.
Ready to transform your indecision into confidence? Write down one decision you're facing, dedicate it to God in prayer, and take that first step. Your journey toward purposeful, faith-filled decisiveness starts now. Visit johnthurman.net for more resources to help you become resilient in your personal life, relationships, and faith.

Introduction to Decisiveness
Speaker 1John Thurman's Resilient Solutions Shortcast, episode 76, foundations of Decisiveness. Glad you joined me today. Why don't we start off with a big question? This is an important question and you'll probably pass it. Have you ever felt like following God's plan is a little like trying to put together a piece of Ikea furniture without instructions? Oh, I have, and if you've ever tried that, it's confusing and can be really frustrating, can't it? Well, if you feel that way, you're not alone.
Building Confidence to Act Boldly
Speaker 1Today, we're going to talk about how you can learn to use God's Word and your faith to be more decisive. Hello, my name is John Thurman and welcome to my podcast, john Thurman's Resilient Solution Shortcast, where I help you become more resilient in your personal life, your relationships and in your faith. Well, hello, I'm John Thurman and thank you so much for joining me today. I'm so glad you've made a choice to be with me for the next few minutes because I'm going to share some truly empowering things that you can do to feel more confident about your decision-making as a Christian, and I hope that got you to smile when I talked about the IKEA piece of furniture, because sometimes finding God's will feels a little bewildering, doesn't it? Well, the good news is is I'm going to show you how you can make decisions based on God's guidance, through prayer, through scripture reading and through listening to his Holy Spirit, because all these things together will help bring you clarity and peace. And today I want to encourage you to build an enduring faith that makes you courageous in your choices and resilient when you're going through those storms that life is certainly going to throw at you. So for the next couple of minutes, I want to talk about building confidence to act boldly in these uncertain times. Think about it for a minute. In our walk with Jesus, making confident decisions isn't just helpful, it's essential. Life is full of twists and turns and opportunities and challenges and adversity, but it's also filled with lots of blessing, and the key to navigating them well is to develop that deep trust in God's sovereignty and love. I sincerely believe that when you understand faith as the confidence that God's got your back and he's in control and he's working out the best for you, everything changes. It's like having a sturdy house built on a strong foundation. When trouble comes, your trust in God keeps you standing tall.
Speaker 1Seven years ago I was deployed with FEMA as a stress counselor to the panhandle of Florida, specifically Panama City and Mexico Beach, a beach that I'd spent several summers with as a kid. That beach used to be made up of a bunch of old cinder block and brick homes that were built in the late 40s, early 50s and even 60s for families and my family used to go down there routinely for summer breaks and vacations, coming up on the site and seeing the absolute destruction that hit that city. That small town. That resort community was devastating. It had a huge surge that came through what homes it didn't level. It severely damaged. It was very heavy and sad to see the destruction and to recall all the good times I had there.
Speaker 1Seven years later, all those homes are pretty much gone and there are new homes and condominiums being built. Thank the Lord, no high rises, and my cousin who goes down there regularly says things are really coming back. It's not the Mexico beach that we grew up with. There's a new and better place. Storms are going to happen and the new homes that are being built there and the condominiums and the guest houses are being built with a strong foundation.
Speaker 1You know Jesus talked about that and he says if your house is built on a good foundation, when trouble comes, god's faith, your trust in him, will keep you standing. So I invite you to consider what decisions you're facing right now. What uncertain waters are you swimming through? Remember your faith isn't just a safety net. It can be a powerful tool for clarity, courage and purpose. And the best part, you don't have to do it by yourself. You don't have to go solo on this. The Lord partners with us. Imagine walking to a crossroads with confidence, knowing that the God who is the creator and sustainer of the universe, the God who guides the stars at night and keeps the universe in motion and order, is guiding your steps also Pretty powerful. He's not too busy not to watch over you.
Faith's Power in Decision Making
Speaker 1I'd like to shift focus here and think a minute or two about the power of faith in decision making. Have you ever paused at a fork in the road wondering which way to go? Proverbs 3, 5, and 6 encourages us and this is out of the New Living Translation trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding. With all your heart, do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do and he will show you which path to take. What if I told you, or reminded you that God is eager to guide you, that he wants to help you make decisions that honor him and bring you peace? Hey, that's a double blessing Honoring God and bringing you peace but it begins with asking him.
Speaker 1Prayer is your divine guidance system. So, right now, take a moment honoring God and bringing you peace, but it begins with asking him. Prayer is your divine guidance system. So, right now, take a moment, pray about your next step. It may be a decision for business and your relationships with your kids, or your finances, or whether to buy that new car or wait for interest rates to come down. Pray it's simple to do, guys, and so many times we dismiss prayer but pray about your next step. Just speak to God honestly. He loves that. He loves it when we're just straight up and true. You haven't got to worry about a bunch of flowery language. Just pray something like Lord, I need your help and I just pray you would show me the next step to take. I believe, as you do, that, as you learn to trust him more often and be more intentional, and I bet you'll discover a confidence that goes way beyond human logic, because God will be speaking, leading and guiding you. Seriously, I want to challenge you the next time you're facing a decision, big or small, don't delay, pray about it, seek God's word and listen for his voice. Then move forward, trusting that he's already working behind the scenes to direct your path. Sounds simple and it is simple. We just get it so complicated because we overthink things.
Biblical Heroes Who Trusted God
Speaker 1I'd like just to touch base on three biblical heroes that learned to trust God. Pretty crazy stories, and I would encourage you to click the link to my blog so you can read about this in more detail. But let's look at three stories of three people in the Old Testament. First is Noah, next is Abraham and then third is a very powerful woman, esther. Now, these people weren't perfect. These heroes weren't perfect at all. They doubted, they hesitated, sometimes they questioned the bottom line. They followed God's call with boldness. Noah built the ark and, by the way, if you've not been to the ark encounter, we did that this summer. Incredible, oh my Lord. That thing is huge and just to see the craftsmanship and the size will blow you away. But Noah built that ark even when the whole world laughed at him, laughed, scoffed and made fun of him. Well, I wonder how they were feeling when that rain started falling. You know, I'm just saying Then.
Speaker 1Number two is Abraham. He left his routine, he left his home ground, he left his family, he left his surroundings, he left his hood, if you will, to venture into the unknown, trusting God's promises. And if he hadn't listened, we wouldn't be here today. Think about that Then. Third is an incredible woman, esther. Esther risked her life because she believed she was called for such a time as this. She stood in the gap for her entire nation and the result of that? Her nation was spared. She listened to God.
Speaker 1Those stories are there to encourage us, and if they can step out in faith, so can you, and I, matter of fact, I want to urge you to reflect on your own journey. Look back and think about the times, how God's faithfulness carried you through before. Use these past moments as stepping stones to greater trust. We all have those in our story of faith Times that we were strong and confident, and times, well, maybe we weren't so strong and confident. But today I want you to take a step and write down one decision you need to make and dedicate it to the Lord. Write down that one decision and dedicate to him. Ask him for wisdom, and then you might want to write down a prayer to help you act on that bully. We've got to learn to trust the Lord in the good times and the hard times.
Speaker 1When life gets turbulent, it's tempting to want to give up, but take heart. Hebrews 11 mentions real people who trusted God's promises even in their darkest moment. Once again, check out the blog to get more details on that. Romans 8.28 reminds us that God is working everything for the good, yes, and even the hard stuff. So here's your next step Whenever you feel overwhelmed, pause to remember that God is working everything for the good, yes, and even the hard stuff. So here's your next step Whenever you feel overwhelmed, pause and remember that God is at work.
Four Steps to Faith-Based Decisions
Speaker 1Take a breath. Let's do that once. Breathe in Two, three, four. Hold it Two, three, four. Then breathe out through your mouth One, two, three, four. So take a breath and lean on the promises of John 14, 27. I'll let you look it up, where he basically says his peace is a gift to you, calming your hearts and mind. So promise yourself today that, even if the path isn't clear, you'll trust his plan. Let that trust be your anchor. So what are some practical ways to do this? Well, I'm all about practicality. Let me share with you four steps you can take. Navigating life can feel a lot like walking through a corn maze, but fear not. With some practical steps, you can strengthen your faith-based decision-making and find the path that's illumined by the light of God's wisdom.
Speaker 1Number one pray persistently. Let's start with basic prayer. It may sound simple, but making a habit of prayer before all significant decisions is like having a direct line to the best counselor ever. James 1.5 encourages us that if you need wisdom, ask our generous God and he will give it to you. Talk about an open invitation. I mean, the next time you're faced with a tough decision, don't hesitate, don't put it off, don't delay. Get on your knees and have a chat with God. He's waiting.
Speaker 1Number two read and study scripture. Now let's talk about the Bible a little bit. Regular Bible reading isn't just for Sunday morning or Sunday school or your small group. It's your spiritual nourishment throughout the week. Think of the scriptures as high-protein confidence boosters. They're like spiritual nourishment. When you dive into God's Word, you're not just reading it, you're getting to know God's character as well as those glorious promises. Trust me, nothing builds faith quite like knowing what he has to say.
Speaker 1Number three seek godly counsel. So remember Proverbs 11,. 14 says Without wise leadership, a nation falls. There is safety in having many advisors. Leaning on trusted brothers and sisters in Christ is essential. They can provide clarity when things seem murky and accountability when we might stray off course. So don't be afraid to reach out. Sometimes we need the gentle nudge or a wise word from someone who cares.
Speaker 1Number four reflect on God's past faithfulness. Lastly, take some time to look back at how God's guided you through earlier seasons in your life. I've been around for a while. I'm 73 years old and I have a lot of opportunities to look back and sometimes I listened and it turned out great, and sometimes I didn't, and well, let's just say I didn't get optimal outcomes. But you even see this pattern in the Psalms, where several times Dave will be in a place of lament, sadness or sorrow, or he missed an opportunity and he'll reflect on what God had done in his life before. A great example of this is in Psalm 77, where David goes to this huge downward spiral and then, around verse 7, 8, 9, he goes. But I remember the days of old when you did this. So it's good to reflect on God's past faithfulness. You see, reflecting on past experiences builds trust for current decisions, because you've seen him come through before and you know I'm right. You can just jot down those moments where his hand was evident in your life. It'll serve as a potent reminder when you're facing new challenges.
Conclusion and Call to Action
Speaker 1As a wrap-up today, remember that your faith is an unwavering foundation for making bold and confident decisions, especially in those seasons of life that feel uncertain and unsure. Build that faith through prayer, scripture and trusting God's guidance, just like those biblical heroes who stepped out in faith. Now is the moment to take a step forward. Reflect on the decision you faced, pray about it and ask God for wisdom and courage. Don't wait. Just trust that he is already at work, guiding your path. Strengthen your confidence in him today and walk boldly into the plans he has for you.
Speaker 1Let me encourage you with just a gentle reminder. Your future is filled with faith and purpose and it can begin right now.
